227. Kick back on the beach. I wanted that over-exposed, blown-out look that suggests an overpowering sun. I quite like the result, even if it is croppped and a little grainy. (did the exposure comp on computer rather than the camera) Also: Hard to take pictures of people on the beach with a telephoto lens without looking like a massive pervert! I fiddled with the image and its very saturated, perhaps to much, but I like the effect. Floating To pass this level the child has to go from one end of the pool to the other floating to breath then rolling over to kick . . . fully dressed. The point is that kids rarely are in swimsuits when they fall in the pool. They should know how heavy clothes are when wet. He crossed the length of the pool in sweats. For a kid who couldn't float a month ago it is an amazing accomplishment. Floats I took my two boys for their swimming lesson, normally Grandad takes them but he was not feeling up to it. Former Discount Store Ellisburg This was originally Wayne Discount store and Foodtown at Brace Road and Route 70 in Cherry Hill. Later in the 1960's was Garwood Discount store with Big W Discount Foods. After that was Dale's/Penn Fruit, then PathMark. It was later a book outlet and an odd lot store. The building has been altered by moving the entrance to the side, covering up the original entrance and windows under the peaked section of the roof and the red brick. Another memorable place here was Wombo's Hoagies, a small shack on the Route 70 side of the parking lot. Shop Window 2 Looking at the shop window...it's discount time! Waited more than 15 minutes for someone to look at the shop window...and it's the result. Two Types of Light This is the result of an experiment I conducted one morning. The vanity lights are on a dimmer and turned down way low, while the green coming in thru the cracked mini blinds is from the morning sun bouncing off trees right outside the window. I boosted the contrast and saturation a little bit. sleeping in I don't love the mini blinds, but they sometimes filter some nice light. Particularly when I'm blissfully lazy and in bed. Storm over Hook Head “If at first you do not succeed, try and try again!” has become my motto. A few weeks ago I took my first trip to visit Hook Head Lighthouse with some friends, I got some shots that day that I thought were ok but wasn’t successful in getting the long exposure shot that I wanted. So off I went again last Friday by myself. The weather started out ok, but by the time I had made the journey there the clouds had started to blacken, the wind was raging and the waves were high and rough. I climbed down onto the rocks and set up my tripod and hoped for the best. Hook Head Lighthouse is the oldest operational lighthouse in the world, about 800 years old. The lighthouse tower, a 13th Century Norman structure, was built by William Marshal, Earl of Pembroke as part of the development of his Lordship of Leinster. It’s an impressive place, and I made some detours on the way to some lovely little isolated bays hidden away down country lanes. I’ll definitely be making another trip here when I’m home in Ireland next. Hooking Up Well, my little bird friends finally came to dinner. This photo and the preceding seven are the result of probably about three hours of patient waiting and shooting and changing lenses to see how things worked as this was a fishing trip during which I aimed not only to fish but to learn more about my tackle box. This photograph and some of the others will require clicking and viewing against the black background or even looking at the large size version. A couple will also require a little bit of a Where's Waldo viewing approach in order to see the story the picture is telling as sometimes the subject is far off center or well camouflaged. These were, as the viewer already knows, transitory subjects at best. I was shooting on a grey wintery day (I recall ISO of like 500) from at least 50 feet with a lens hood and the fastest shutter speed I think was 1/500. It actually gets a bit much after a while - more and more mosaics, and they are extending the museum - but it is really impressive. Shijiazhuang Y-5 (Antonov An-2 Colt) The Antonov An-2 was designed to meet a 1947 Soviet requirement for a replacement for the Polikarpov Po-2 which was used in large numbers as both an agricultural aircraft and a utility aircraft. Antonov designed a large single-bay all-metal biplane with an enclosed cockpit and a cabin for 12 seated passengers. By 1960 the USSR had produced over 5,000 units. Since 1960, most An-2s have been built at Poland's WSK factory in Mielec, with over 13,000 made there before full production ended in 1991. Limited production from parts stocks, as well as spares and maintenance coverage continued until 2001, when four aircraft were produced for Vietnam. China also builds the An-2 under license as the Shijiazhuang Y-5. Designed as a utility aircraft for use in forestry and agriculture, the basic airframe is highly adaptable. Variants include hopper-equipped versions for crop-dusting, scientific versions for atmospheric sampling, water-bombers for fighting forest-fires, flying ambulances, float-equipped seaplane versions, lightly-armed combat versions for dropping paratroops, and of course the most common An-2T version, which is the 12-seater passenger aircraft. An interesting note from the pilot's handbook reads: "If the engine quits in instrument conditions (blind flying when you can't see the ground) or at night, the pilot should pull the control column full aft (it won't stall) and keep the wings level. The leading-edge slats will snap out at about 64 km/h (40 mph), and when the airplane slows to a forward speed of about 40 km/h (25 mph), the airplane will sink at about a parachute descent rate until the aircraft hits the ground." The An-2 has no stall speed quoted in the operating handbook. Big Man gazing down at Grand Gulch Here the "Big Man" looks over Grand Gulch, just as the artist did, who painted him perhaps 750 or 1,000 years ago. This was an easy backpacking trip. Only the very short pitch up and down the rim of Grand Gulch gave us a chance to really "test" the merits of our new lightweight internal frame packs. We had a lot of fun together on this little excursion and there is nothing like sleeping beneath the desert stars in a mile high slickrock canyon, with somebody you love. Fun! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 4. Thursday 21st of April 2011 This was a test run for some new lightweight internal frame backpacks, my wife and I had purchased for this trip. After 40 years of using our comfortable, easy to access, Kelty Tioga external frame backpacks, we decided that for “off trail” canyon hiking, that some new light internal frame backpacks might be better suited (and besides I had a 20% off coupon and my 2010 REI refund dividend burning a hole in my jeans pocket at the time). So I bought an REI Flash 65 and the Flash 50 for my wife. Not only would these work better for the overhangs encountered with off trail canyon hiking, but they stored in our pickup truck almost flat, when not in use. To get to right to the point: We both LOVED these new packs. I still think we will use our external frames on most occasions when we are hiking a well established trail and balance and narrow low profile is not a consideration. But when we want to go light and have any plans for off trail backpacking, the new internals are here to stay. You really need four wheel drive and high clearance to get all the way down to the stock pond trailhead for the Government Trail into Grand Gulch. Our old 1994 Toyota pickup truck with high clearance, low and high range “shift on the fly” four wheel drive, and adequate skid plates underneath, was just the ticket. We ended up parking next to a ranger’s pickup truck. The Government Trail is easy hiking. It is an old Jeep trail so we could hike side by side for the 2.5 miles or so from the stock pond to the Grand Gulch canyon rim. The next half mile is steep in places and there are a couple of overhangs if you happen to have a high backpack. We had no trouble at all getting on down to the bottom of the Grand Gulch canyon. At a leisurely pace it took us an hour from trailhead to rim and half hour from rim to canyon bottom at Grand Gulch. We hiked up Grand Gulch and took several “side hikes”, the most fun being to the “Big Man” pictograph panel. The stars of the panel are actually a Big Man (with modest male features) and a Big Woman. So why they don’t call it the Big COUPLE panel, I don’t know. Left over and hard to extinguish male chauvinism I guess. We met a lot of nice people on this road trip and at the bottom of Grand Gulch we met a fit couple with two energetic young girls, camped near the mouth of Polly Canyon. The wife was preparing camp meals (toasted fajitas), that to us, seemed gourmet and outstanding camp cuisine. The next day the man would turn up as our hero of the road trip as the “Good Samaritan”. Though the weather was good (nice temperatures and no rain), wind gusts hit pretty hard throughout the afternoon and into the evening. We were lucky that the “nice family” told us about an out of the wind camping location under a big bent cottonwood tree. The camping site was perfect for us. We slept with the rain fly off of our REI Quarter Dome T-3 tent that night and enjoyed watching the big dipper, shooting stars, and a bright moon through the mesh canopy of the tent that night. We really slept well. 5. Friday 22nd of April 2011 We ate breakfast and watched the morning sun illuminate the sandstone canyon walls around us. The wind was gone and it was a perfect day. We took our time hiking down Grand Gulch and then back up to the rim of the canyon. Here we found a lady lying down under a juniper tree and her husband with a large backpack sitting on the slick rock. During our discussion we were told that she had badly sprained her ankle down in Grand Gulch (her husband didn’t tell us how long ago), but they had obviously made it to the rim together, leaving only the easy 2.5 mile “Jeep” road section to hike to the trailhead. I asked the husband if they had a vehicle at the trailhead or had they had to park up the road above the four wheel drive section. He said they were at the trailhead. He showed no signs of needing our help so we continued on hiking toward our truck. Along the way we passed three backpackers, heading down government trail, and then along came the “Good Samaritan”, without any pack at all hiking down towards us. To be honest I didn’t recognize him as the father of the two little girls and husband of the good camp cook (the family who had told us about the good camp site). My wife, who is much more observant and attentive than me in social situations, picked right up on it. Soon enough he learned of Vindexs defeat and left Hispania Tarraconensis to lead his legions on the long march to Rome. Fortunately for Galba, no battle was necessary since Nero committed suicide while he and his soldiers were still en route, and the capital lay open to receive him as emperor when he arrived. Neros death represented the end of the Julio-Claudian dynasty and Galba took the helm at a critical moment, for he was not only the first emperor who was not a member of the ruling house, but his revolt had shown the senate that emperors easily could be made in the provinces – a lesson that would be learned time and again during the next few centuries. Certainly one of Galbas most elegant coin types, this aureus celebrates Spain, the land he had governed at the time of his insurrection against Nero. Hispania, the personification of Spain, is here shown as a woman of dual virtue: fertility of the land, and prowess in war. In some later representations she is accompanied by a rabbit – a symbol of the region. Both Stabo and Pliny wrote that rabbits were so plentiful in Spain that occasionally entire towns had to be moved because their communities were overrun and, on at least one occasion, a citys foundation had been dangerously undermined by burrows. NUMBER 34: Ocean Terminal to Riccarton Friday June 13th 2008 Get on at Ocean Terminal, 4.20pm. A couple ahead about to get on but turning away. A basil plant on a windowsill and the edge of a television behind it. Past a shop of ex-hotel furniture, selling secondhand fruit machines for ?100, no lights flashing. And over a rooftop to an open skylight. On Duke Street a girl falls off her stabilised bike and goes sprawling across the kerb, looks up for someone. And on Lochend Road vertical blinds get pushed by the breeze back into a darkened room. An empty white-cider bottle rolls around in the aisle. A heavily pregnant woman walks tiredly. Up towards Meadowbank, where a cafe has it's windows postered with pictures of luminous-coloured food. The sun pours in but darkens the spaces behind other windows, a pub lounge where the lights of a fruit machine flashing on are the only things coming through the shadow. Beside the roadworks a sign saying ADVERSE CAMBER. A man with heavily tattooed arms refuses a homeless guy at the top of Waverley Steps. Up ahead a large cloud edges slowly closer to the sunshine. A group of children all drinking from pint bottles of full-fat milk. And turn right towards Fountainbridge. The sign from the closed down bingo hall has been ripped out and exposes fixtures from fluorescent lights, wires leading into plastic boxes. The dirt streaked windows of the library. The clouds have gathered in the east. A railway signal light on red. And a bank of leaves beside Slateford station, nearly all nettles. Under the aqueduct. And they're becoming rain clouds, angry over the prison and seagulls banking slowly. An overweight woman in a black sparkly top walking across a forecourt. A dual carriageway, council estates either side. And reach the bypass and music comes on from the back. A narrow path tread down through grass, the window is still cold, and nothing beyond. A sign says ROAD LIABLE TO ICING. Bouncy castle, child less, against the darkening sky Camping is not for me. This weekend at work we had our annual Roar ‘n’ Snore weekend at Port Lympne Wild Animal Park over the grasslands, which I have since coined wetlands. In stark contrast to the darkening skies the campers turned up in jolly spirits on the Saturday. As they set up their testing tents (some not used for a year or so, some that were borrowed that no longer had instructions and others they were purchased cheaply or seemed like a good idea at the time), the thunder rumbled ever closer overhead, the lighting illuminated the speeding, darkening moody grey sky and yet the camper’s sprits never appeared to wane. The next day when I returned to the field having eaten, slept, showered and changed in the comfort of our home, I returned to the field and was genuinely impressed by the campers ability to remain happy, relax and even pleased with the event, this despite having to slept out on a windy, nearly blowing a gale, field with only Portaloos as amenities i.e. no showers, no comfortable beds or even no hot water, with just the sound of the lions roaring and the timber wolves a howling to keep them company. They must have a gene that even NatureSam didn’t inherit, hats off to the happy campers; I wish them sunshine and calm evenings wherever they shall pitch, they deserve it.
