How Big Is A Baby At 24 Weeks
Autumn #1 - 11/24/06 The cats were in an uncooperative mood today, as if collectively deciding that if I had the day off from work, well, then, they should take a day off from "modeling," too. So they took off and did whatever cats do when they are out of sight. So I wandered around and enjoyed the morning--days off are meant for that, after all--somewhat lazily seeking "fall foliage" to photograph, just for a change of pace. In this particular neck of the woods, we don't have spectacularly colorful autumns--the trees change color, but for the most part the colors tend more toward rust and yellow and burnt orange, than vivid scarlet or crimson or even just plain old red. So coming upon this baby maple (I think) was a pleasant surprise. It wasn't much more than a foot tall, if that--the leaves you see here are all of the leaves on that tree-to-be. And it dawned on me that maybe I should be looking more "macro" than "wide-angle," that by looking too intently at the "forest," I was missing trees that individually might be something special; that, by trying to see the "big picture," well, you get my drift. So I refocused, and found autumn, or anyway a little piece of it. I've got a friend who is just beginning her nursing education and is learning about life at the cellular level. What I gather, from what she has told me, is that almost everything that happens on an "organism" level, happens also at the cellular level, as if each cell were an individual, in and of itself. This fascinated me, not so much because I have any particular interest in biology (I don't), but because for a long time I've seen things from the other way, kind of: Organizations, governments, virtually any type of social group, operate, even grow and develop, very similarly to how we, human individuals, grow and develop. Which brings me back to my tiny maple tree and why I'll probably revisit it in coming days and weeks, to watch its progress through the remaining autumn, coming winter and eventual spring. I guess I am easily fascinated. Guess how big is this flower! Indovina quanto e' grande questo fiore! Rafflesia is the biggest flower in the world, although the varieties in peninsular Malaysia (as in the picture) are not as big as those in Borneo. The flower is the only visible part of a parasitic fungus that grows inside a vine (and ultimately kills it). We were told that the bud looks like a cauliflower and can be eaten. When the petals start opening, the do it one at the time and each takes a few hours (or a day? I am now doubting my memory...). The flower itself lasts for about a week and is most beautiful when freshly opened, when the colour is brighter. This is already a few days old. It is used by the aborigine people as a medicine: it is given to women after they have given birth to help the elimination of the "old blood" left in the uterus, such as what is left of the placenta and lining of the uterus (yi mu cao is used in a similar way in Chinese medicine). The Malaysian guide said that that's one of the reasons why there's fewer and fewer of them. ..................................... Quando il fiore e' in boccio assomiglia ad un cavolfiore e si puo' mangiare. Poi i petali cominciano ad aprirsi, uno ad uno ed ognuno ci mette diverse ore (o forse un giorno? mi vengono dei dubbi...). Il fiore dura per circa una settimana ma e' al suo apice di bellezza appena aperto, quando i colori sono piu' brillanti. Questo ha gia' qualche giorno. Gli aborigeni lo usano come medicina: viene dato alle donne dopo il parto per aiutarle ad espellere il "sangue vecchio", che dev'essere cio' che resta della placenta e della mucosa uterina (in medicina cinese si usa yi mu cao per questa funzione). La guida malese dice che e' per questo che ce ne sono sempre meno. Baby Buddies Unbelievably, we actually managed to get this photo of just the birthday girl and her best buddy, even though there were quite a lot of friends and family around to help us her celebrate her big day. Mikaela did a miraculous job of cooperating for this photo op too. She leaned in for the hug all on her own. What a sweetheart. :) Happy First, Baby Girl! Baby girl She was born at 12:35pm UK time, after 4 hours and 15 minutes labour at home using only gas and air. Her date of birth is 07/07/07, which is pretty unforgettable. She weighed in at a wopping 7 lb 11oz, which is un-expected. I feel like I've been kicked up the butt by an elephant. She is absolutely gorgeous. Much better photos coming soon. Elmo The Baby One of my friend son.. his first son actually. I was asking her all the time when she just deliver her baby that I can took pic of her new born.. but she was to busy.. after 2 and half month, I visit her and her little boy-Elmo. We have a hard time to make him to sleep, he was to excited because I came to visit them haha.. so cute ^_^ anyway in the end when I just decide to go back, he fell a sleep .. I was at a lovely and weird coffee shop with my friend and her baby earlier today. I could have taken a much more interesting selfie there but as I didn't remember my DSLR this is what you get. I have to tell you about the coffee shop though. It was quite a peculiar place! At first I thought that it looked like a romantic, vintage-like place with a lovely decoration but as we sat there drinking very good and tasty coffee we started to notice some strange things around us. Stuffed animals and artworks which included some plastic baby dolls hung on the wall, a stuffed cat (we truly wondered if it was real, YACK ANYWAY) on the floor etc. It was like from a movie. At the first glance everything seems all right but then suddenly it all turns into a creepy horror show. The baby artworks seemed cute at first but the more I looked at them the less they started to appear to be charming. I liked the place and the odd items anyway. The coffee shop had a good vibe even though the decoration was so controversial, or maybe even due to that! LoneWolfHalloween I have a friend who used to own an antique junk store. He collected the weirdest stuff imaginable, including everything salvageable from the plethora of garbage dumpsters hidden in the alleys around town. Recently, he closed his store and turned it into a stellar in-town residence. He retained the large street-side display area so he could continue creating bizarre life-sized dioramas that are truly a sight to behold. This past Halloween, he was in fine form. He dressed all his beat-up and dismembered mannequins, cardboard cut-outs and baby dolls, large and small, in crazy freak-show garb and posed them in the old store windows -- some headless, some with creepy masks where their cranial real estate used to reside. I took a ton of photos, then turned them into greeting cards he could mail out for Halloween. I added a few PhotoShop effects to make them even creepier. Tiny I'm not green-fingered. At all. The only thing I've ever been able to grow is orchids - which seem to thrive under my distracted inattention. Everything else goes interesting and straw-like. After eating an orange last week I spat out a single pip and wondered if I could get it to sprout if I planted it. The little pot it's in is about 3 inches across at the top and filled with a bit of compost. It sits on a very sunny window sill and catches rays from morning to night right through the hottest part of the day. I've kept the soil nice and moist and chatted to the seed each day, then after about 10 days, we had a visitor. This tiny seedling is about 1mm across it's two leaves. It's ridiculously small. I daren't water it from the top - I'd crush it with a single drop. But it's the first thing I've ever grown from a seed, and I feel unaccountably happy to have brought it into the world. :) Oh - and this is a 1p coin. :) Tiny Baby Tortoise this tiny baby tortoise photo was taken at the world of birds. The actual size of the tortoise is the size of half an adults thumb. I must add that this was taken through a glass window.. Janet was sure that she was going insane by now because she was not fine, she was thinking of Vlad, she was craving for him, for his attention. Mostly at the nights, he would come to visit her. He would offer his own blood to her, he would ask about her health, some more small talk and then she would again be alone. That was the same, always. But that night, Janet opened her eyes to the lightning inside the damp cell. There were candles everywhere and Janet quickly jumped off her small bed. She rose on her feet and looked around in horror. Then a strong hand held her arm from behind and ran his cold fingers over her skin. ''Do not be afraid Janet, i thought you would like some change only,'' he whispered while he sat on her bed and pulled her to sit before him. Her hips were between his legs and he wrapped his arm to her waist. Still, she smelt so great, like heavens. Still she was innocent, an unmated vampire, an innocent vampire. Vlad buried his nose between her locks and sighed her name. This small movement sent shievers down her spine and Janet almost moaned. She felt her eyes close with the pleasure. His body was cold but it was burning like a flame and she was caught between this flames. Vlad could feel the wetness growing between her crossed legs but he had promised himself not to touch her, at least before her baby would be born. He only pressed his body on her back, sucked on her neck softly and ran his fingers on her heated skin with a murmur. ''So Janet, my little little human, my little bride, do you want to be my Queen? If you marry with me, your half-breed child will be protected and so you will be, i want you as my Queen,'' he murmured to her neck, grazing her skin with his teeth carefully. A moan was her response then she turned on his lap to face with him. Her eyes were expectant and warm. ''I will Vlad but you will protect my child and me,'' she repeated and he nodded. After all, without him, the other vampires in the coven would not let her or her baby live. But he was the King and the others would obey no matter what. Janet smiled and hugged Vlad. With a jolt, he pushed her back and she fell on the floor, between his open legs. ''I do not need your fancy love shows Janet, i am not a human nor you are! Do not forget this, i asked this because my son needs a mother,'' he spat coldly and grabbed her arm, pulled her to himself forecefully. ''I am the King Janet, you have to obey me, did you really think you could say no to me? I owe you Janet, you sold your soul and i am the keeper, now stop this and give me what i want,'' he roared and kissed her lips so fiercely. His fangs were ripping her lips and he tasted her blood. Damn, he wanted to lick all of her blood, to watch her blood flooding on her naked body but she was pregnant, he could not touch her. So with a sneer on his face, he pushed her away again and disappeared. Again Janet was alone. Vlad....he was so surprising. He was preparing her candles, roses, wine and he was gone when she was pleased. With a growl, she pulled her knees to her chest and wrapped her arms to her knees. Life, an eternal life with Vlad would not be easy. She hoped that she had this inner strentgh... 33/52 When the Cat's Away This mouse will play! Or rather she did this afternoon shooting some selfies for this week's BAM which also happens to fit the bill for Day 19 of The Joy of Love, "When They're Gone" and since I've just joined the gang, I threw this one into black and white for Cliche Saturday's #44 in the hunt. And guess what? It feels so good! This past week I was laid low by a nasty flu, and let me tell you, I've got a new appreciation for having a healthy day. Somehow, I often find myself creating things to worry about. I haven't done this. I should've done that. I was supposed to do this. But really, does it matter? Mostly not. In the end, everything gets done that needs to, all the bills are paid on time and in full, the house hasn't fallen down around us, and I'm not spending the entire day in bed or on the toilet. So I guess in the end, its really basic if we want to really strip things down to what matters. And for that I'm truly thankful. So the next time someone tells me what I should have done, well, why don't you give me some ideas of where I should tell them to go instead. We'll shoot them and skin them and rip out their guts We'll stick them in tacos and eat their little butts. I like to hunt it makes me feel like a man" Then he looked at Thing One and gently touched his hand Thing One said "that sounds great, it really sounds fun, But I want to be the one to carry the gun". So Thing One took the rifle Thing Two took the ammo They put on their boots and darned on some camo Thing one drove the rig and said "Don't have a cow, but I can't leave without my other pal" So they picked up Thing Three as they sang a loud chorus They drove untill they reached the middle of the forrest Thing One took a shot up a tree at a squirrel He missed and they laughed 'cause he shot like a girl! Thing Two took the gun and gave it a try He shot and he shot but no squirrel would die Thing Three laughed and said "I'll show you how it's done" He knocked over Thing Two as he grabbed for the gun Thing Three took off screaming, the gun in one hand He was something like "Rambo" with his natural-born tan He shot all his targets one, two, three, DEAD! Then he kneeled down and cried and this is what he said "I feel sorry that inocent squirrels have to die, But it had to happen and we all know why, It's in our nature, our he-man drill We're mighty tough hunters we get a thrill when we kill But since we're all hungry and Thing Two forgot lunch, Let's wrap up these babies and crunch a munch, munch!" The Littlest Fawn (Shenandoah National Park) Saturday morning, I got up at 4:45am to make another early morning trip to the national park. The sky looked partly cloudy and the weather was nice when I left the house, so I was optimistic about getting some good shots. However, that all changed quickly once I got into the park. The skies clouded over, the wind picked up and by the time I got to Big Meadows, fog had rolled in. The sunrise was totally blah. I decided to wander around Big Meadows looking for fawns when I spotted this precious little thing. It was sooooo tiny, and it was all by itself, crying. Just about broke my heart. It was still overcast and windy, so I had to take this shot at ISO 800. When I was done, I grabbed the little fawn and took it home with me. OK, not really, but I wanted to! Instead, I opted to watch the fawn for a bit, and thankfully it's mother came over to check on it a few minutes later.
