Patsy Jean

My great grandmother, Mary Etta Runnells, ("Granny") was born and raised in Anna, Texas. While still a teenager, Granny fell in love with an "oil man" from Oklahoma who came into town and swept her off her feet. They were married only a short while before things began to unravel.

Quite the scandal in the day, Granny's husband left her for another woman while she was still pregnant, and never saw their daughter. She stayed technically married - as she kept hoping he would come home to redeem himself of his sins and she held on to that hope for a long time, Granny became a single mother. Shamed, she was forced to move back into her parent's farmhouse. Patsy Jean became the delight of the entire family with her coy laugh and love of music.

She lived about eighteen months before she died of an upper respiratory tract infection that was thought to be diphtheria by the country doctor. She was my Granny's first child, and the loss devastated her greatly.

When I was a little girl, I found a wooden chest in the back of Granny's closet that was full of what I assumed to be doll items. I took out the faded smocked hand embroidered dresses, and asked Granny if I could put them on my cabbage patch dolls. She sighed heavily and said no, that these clothes were not to play with. Granny's older brother (who incidentally died in the South Pacific when his submarine was sunk by enemy fire - his hand colored navy portrait hangs in our house) had whittled airplanes and a wooden toy train that were tucked into the box. There were little bottles of her medicine, and a plaster doll, her crepe dress faded and tattered - nestled into blankets and newspaper clippings about her death in the Sherman paper. A tiny mirror that Granny said Patsy Jean used to carry - giggling at her own reflection was there, along with other trinkets of her life. I sat, and listened to Granny weave stories for hours about her baby who brought such delight and so much emptiness when she passed.

A few years ago, Granny asked me if I would come by the house and pick up Patsy Jean's box. She wasn't well, and was worried that someone would find the box in the closet and throw it out - and never appreciate what was in it. She asked me to promise that I would treasure the history that went with it.

Granny floats in and out of coherent thought now, Alzheimer's robbing her quick wit. I wish that she knew that Patsy Jean's powder tins are now in our son's room. Her tiny toy box is on display in our guest room. I'm having the fragile linen and silk dresses restored. Should we ever have a daughter, they'll be displayed in her room. The wooden toys made by her uncle will be kept safely with the silver spoon that fed her the last doses of the medicine that was unable to save her life.

These items will be kept in our family for a long, long time. They aren't valuable from a monetary perspective, but they are so special to me. And most importantly, Patsy Jean's story will not be forgotten.

This weekend the kids made home-made snow-globes for the holidays. Start with a small glass jar (like those from baby food) and glue some water-proof decorations to the inside of the lid. Fill the jar with distilled water, a few drops of glycerin, and some glitter for the snow. Screw the lid into the jar and turn the whole thing upside-down. Viola! Snow globes!

Orangutan {Pongo pygmaeus}

The orangutans are two endangered species of great apes (the other being the gorilla). Known for their intelligence, they live in trees and are the largest living arboreal animal. They have longer arms than other great apes, and their hair is typically reddish-brown, instead of the brown or black hair typical of other great apes. Native to Indonesia and Malaysia, they are currently found only in rainforests on the islands of Borneo and Sumatra, though fossils have been found in Java, the Thai-Malay Peninsula, Vietnam and China. There are only two surviving species in the genus Pongo: the Bornean Pongo pygmaeus and the critically endangered Sumatran Pongo abelii. The subfamily Ponginae includes the extinct genera Gigantopithecus and Sivapithecus.

Size relative to a 6 foot (1.8 m) manAn orangutan's standing height averages from 4 to 5 ft (1.2 to 1.5 m) and weighs between 73 to 180 pounds (33 to 82 kg).[2] Males can weigh up to 250 lb (110 kg) or more.[3] Orangutan hands are similar to humans hands; they have four long fingers and an opposable thumb. Their feet have four long toes and an opposable big toe. Orangutans can grasp things with both their hands and their feet. The largest males have an arm span of about 7.5 ft (2 m).

Orangutans have a large, bulky body, a thick neck, very long, strong arms, short, bowed legs, and no tail. They are mostly covered with long reddish-brown hair, although this differs between the species: Sumatran Orangutans have a more sparse and lighter coloured coat.[4]

The orangutan has a large head with a prominent mouth area. Adult males have large cheek flaps (which get larger as the ape ages) that show their dominance to other males and their readiness to mate to other females. The age of maturity for females is approximately 12 years. Orangutans may live for about 50 years in the wild. However, thousands of orangutans don't reach adulthood due to human disruption. Orangutans are killed for food while others are killed because of disruption in people's property. Mother orangutans are killed so their infants can be sold as pets. Many of the infants die without the help of their mother.[3]

Orangutans are the most arboreal of the great apes, spending nearly all of their time in the trees. Every night they fashion sleeping nests from branches and foliage. They are more solitary than other apes; males and females generally come together only to mate. Mothers stay with their babies for six or seven years. There is significant sexual dimorphism: females can grow to around 4 ft (1 m) 2 in or 127 cm and weigh around 100 lb (45 kg) while flanged adult males can reach 5 ft 9 in or 175 cm in height and weigh over 260 lb (118 kg).[5]

The arms of orangutans are twice as long as their legs. Much of the arm's length has to do with the length of the radius and the ulna rather than the humerus. Their fingers and toes are curved, allowing them to better grip onto branches. Orangutans have less restriction in the movements of their legs than humans and other primates, due to the lack of a hip joint ligament which keeps the femur held into the pelvis. Unlike gorillas and chimpanzees, orangutans are not true knuckle-walkers, and are instead fist-walkers.[6]

Flanged adult maleFruit makes up 65–90 percent of the orangutan diet. Fruits with sugary or fatty pulp are favored. Ficus fruits are commonly eaten, because they are easy to harvest and digest. Lowland Dipterocarp forests are preferred by orangutans because of their plentiful fruit; the same forests provide excellent timber for the logging industry and good soil conditions for palm oil plantations. Bornean orangutans consume at least 317 different food items that include: young leaves, shoots, bark, insects, honey and bird eggs.[7][8]

Orangutans are opportunistic foragers, and their diets vary markedly from month to month.[8] Bark is consumed as a last resort in times of food scarcity; fruits are always preferred.

Orangutans are thought to be the sole fruit disperser for some plant species including the climber species Strychnos ignatii which contains the toxic alkaloid strychnine.[9] It does not appear to have any effect on orangutans except for excessive saliva production.

Geophagy, the practice of eating soil or rock, has been observed in orangutans. There are three main reasons for this dietary behavior; for the addition of minerals nutrients to their diet; for the ingestion of clay minerals that can absorb toxic substances; or to treat a disorder such as diarrhea.[10]

Orangutans use plants of the genus Commelina as an anti-inflammatory balm.[11]

My mother has loved knitting all her life, she made scarves, sweaters, mittens, hats, everything. When I was a child and even as an adult I could give her a desgin for a sweater and she would make it, easy peasy.
Though most of all she loves to knit these tiny baby booties, bags full of them. Whenever there is a new child in the family, mom would have a hand made gift ready.
But ever since she got ill last Summer the knitting needles stayed nearly untouched.

When I visited her yesterday the needles, yarn and a pair of finished booties were laying on the table, a clear sign that she is doing better and feels motivated to pick up her life again.
Mom has decided that she'd like to stay in the nursing home and not return to her own house again. She still lives in a temporary room but will apply for a permanent place.
She loves the company of the other residents, the many activities the staff is organizing and the fact that she can come and go as she pleases. She doesn't feel lost and alone like she did the last couple of years when she was home.

Like mom I have to get used to the idea of leaving the old house. I was born and raised there, I've had the best childhood in that neighborhood, dad died there and Muis is buried in the garden. So many treasured memories, it's hard to realize that someone else will be living there someday.
But life goes on and I'm grateful that mom is getting ready for another chapter in her life. I wish her many more baby booties:-)

Stay-on Baby Booties

I have knit this pattern so many times that I have it memorized! The garter stitch accommodates baby's growing feet and I have gotten good feedback from parents about how these booties do stay on.

They are easy to whip up (I made them in a evening). This pair is for my neighbors' new granddaughter.

It's a great way to use up leftover sock yarn (which I have a lot of). These booties are made from Socks That Rock. The yarn pooled terribly (gave me fits!) when I knit up socks for myself but it behaved beautifully for these booties.

I decided to spend my happy-hour on Friday photographing a bride & groom whose wedding I did a couple years back. The wedding was fantastic and this gorgeous couple invited me to photograph their newborn, when he makes an appearance. I asked about maternity photos, and they said they just bought a house and it wasn’t in their budget. Since I can sympathize with their situation on the house, I said it’d be my honor to squeeze off a few maternity photos for free since it was something they wanted. To me it’s more gratifying to help people than to profit from them. So in those situations where I can help, it’s the best feeling in the world. And then they did pay me a little something, which I immediately spent on sushi for dinner. Win-win-win.

Usually when we talk about energy, we are refering to an ongoing source of power, something that is able to generate power, such as an electric generator. In a similar manner, when we speak of an energetic person, we usually mean a vigorous person, someone who possesses enormous energy. When we are around such a person, we feel there is a bank of energy happening. That person works so hard that we feel guilty being idle around him or her. We feel that we should do something too, and we begin to work very hard. Then no one can say that we have been bad boys and girls, that we haven't done our chores, washed the dishes or ironed the sheets. Because we feel that person's enormous energy, we begin to perk up, and we stop being idle. We begin to take part in the energy.

Then there is another kind of energy, which is self-existing. Self-existing energy is not dependant on something or somebody else; it simply takes place continuously. Although the source of such energy is difficult to track down, it is universal and all-pervasive. It happens by itself, naturally. It is based on enthusiasm in the sense that we trust what we are doing, and freedom in the sense that we are completely certain that we are not going to be imprisoned by our own energy, but instead, freed constantly. In other words, we realise that such energy does come up by itself, and that we can work with it. This self-existing energy is the potentiality of siddhi, a Sanskrit word that refers to the ability to use the existing energies of the universe in a very special and appropriate way.

Self-existing energy is difficult to describe in words or concepts. When we try to describe this pattern of energy, we are only fingerpainting. Basically, it is the energy of the psychological realm. No matter what state of mind we are in, we experience a particular quality of life, that is, we experience an emotion. We begin to feel an electric spark taking place. That energy can come out of having a quarrel with our wife or out of having a severe accident or a love affair. It comes out of being either rejected or accepted.

This energy is created both when we fail to do something and when we accomplish something. Rejection or acceptance by the world does not mean that the energy is either invalid or valid. Rather, there is transparent energy happening all the time. Whether we are in a appropriate situation, in accordance with the laws of the universe, or we are in a inappropriate situation, not in accordance with the laws of the universe, energy is constantly taking place. This energy, from the vajrayana or tantric point of view, is simply the energy that exists. It does not mean being hard-working or extremely industrious, always doing things, being a busybody, or anything like that. This energy can come from all kinds of challenges, in the positive or negative sense. Such energy takes place constantly.

Self-existing energy permeats all of our emotional relationships: our emotions towards our relatives, our lovers, our friends, and our enemies. It also permeats our philosophical beliefs: either something is happening "right" according to our beliefs, or something has gone "wrong" according to our beliefs. Some situations try to dislodge us from our philosophical or religious commitments, and some situations try to draw us into certain commitments. All kinds of energies take place. So when we talk about energy, we are not talikng about vigor alone but about that which exists in our lives. It is as though flint and steel were rubbing against each other and sparking constantly, again and again. That is, the phenomenal world exists, and we either rub against it or with it, and that rubbing is constantly creating a spark.

According to the tantric understanding of reality, energy is related to the experience of duality, the experience that you exist and others exist. Of course, both those concepts are false, but who cares about that? -- at the time, anyway.The deceptive existence of you and other rubs together, nevertheless. Sometimes you are conquering the world and sometimes the world is conquering you. It is like riding on a balloon in the ocean: sometimes the balloon rides on you and you are underneath the ocean; sometimes you ride on the balloon and the balloon is underneath the ocean. That play of duality takes play constantly; that kind of electricity takes place all the time.

So the basic notion of energy is nothing particularly magical or miraculous. It is simply rubbing together of the duality of you and the phenomenal world, you and other. We are talking about that spark, that fire. It is real fire, real water, real earth, and real air: the real elements are working with you. Still, at this point we have no idea who you are, actually. Let's just say we are talking about the basic you. Let's leave it vague at this point; otherwise it is going to get too complicated. Just leave it at you, this vague stuff that exists somewhere or oth

SAD NEWS

On Friday at 4.10 pm our liitle boy Barney sadly died peacefully and suddenly with us by his side at home.
After 3 weeks of tests and x-rays he was finally diagnosed with Addisons disease which he has probably had since birth or contacted years ago.
This horrid virus is virtually undetectable and slowly Very slowly takes your life without you knowing it.
By the time the symptoms are recognised it is usually too late.
We are both devastated and so upset he was only 10 and such a happy little chap.
Barney thank you for coming into our lives and being such a lovely friend,giving us so much LOVE and making us so happy.
We love and miss you terribly and our hearts are broken

A few days ago Jade developed an asthma-like symptom attack. He was coughing and crying all night that really worried us. His pedia diagnosed that it was a croup, a viral infection causing inflammation of the upper airway that leads to a cough that sounds like a bark, particularly when a child is crying.
Thank God that Jade is doing well now but still have to take some medication through a nebulizer .
