All You Need Is Love.... I found this poor baby floating on top of water with his wings ripped and quickly scooped him out......he immediately crawled up on my hand. I held him for a while as he just stayed on my hand / finger and we looked at each other. I decided if he was making that much of an effort to live....then I had to help him a little. When my kids were little and got sick, I used to make them a "sick bed".....with a nice warm afghan, movies, ginger ale, chicken noodle soup and a bell to ring for me when they needed me. Since this poor thing did not qualify for a sick bed ( ; ) )....he got next to the best thing. He got a "sick box"..... We made trips out of the "sick box" to go from flower to flower, as his fully winged friends were doing. By me carrying him, it made the others not want to be around a "hand" that was trying to suck the sweet nectar out of the center of the flowers....so this guy got a little extra. When he was finished......he'd hop back up on my hand and we'd go to another flower. I cared for him for a few days and I went out one day and he'd "flown" all by himself up to my back deck chair. I placed him back in his "sick box" as I thought this was a premature flight, since his wings were still all ripped. I went back in the house and came back to check on him and he was up on the lawn chair once again.....I let him stay. A few hours passed and I went back to check on the lawn chair and he was gone. I can only hope that he is now flying free and happy and learns his lesson to stay away from pools of water....where next time someone may not be close by to rescue him........or want to make him a "sick box". ; ) Imangine being surrounded by millions of baby seahorses. (7) FDA Gaps Leave U.S. Vulnerable to Melamine Contamination Former FDA Director of Imports says 'radical change' needed Melamine-contaminated ingredients and products from China may be on their way to or already in the hands of U.S. consumers. But the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the government entity which monitors the importing of dairy products, is not well-positioned to find, detain, or remove most contaminated products. In September, over 53,000 illnesses and at least four deaths were reported in China from consuming the toxic chemical in milk products. The outbreak has raised concerns worldwide and exposed a gaping hole in the U.S. government’s ability to monitor and test imported products with milk or milk derivatives in them. The FDA has increased inspections and product testing at ports of entry in response. But critics of the FDA, which inspects less than one percent of imports a year, say the safeguards are not enough to protect consumers. “Product liability is protecting us more than what the FDA is doing,” says Carl Nielsen, former Director of Imports for the FDA from 1999-2005. “It is an awful lot of 'buyer beware'—you want to be educated. There’s so little known from the foreign markets.” To date, the FDA has issued import alerts for at least 10 different products from four Chinese manufacturers thought to be contaminated with melamine. The FDA tests some products, but also relies in part on Customs and Border Patrol and state-level agencies to monitor and test products for melamine. Nielsen says that the FDA’s culture of “find the bad stuff” is a reaction based on perceived risk. “They find the bad stuff just by tripping over it, not because they have any great mysterious strategic capability” says Nielsen. “They find a problem, then they’ll put it up in an import alert, which is on the web, and there are about 265 of them. That ends up being the primary criteria for being on the hunt for bad stuff—stuff that’s already been found. It doesn’t mean the other 99 percent is okay.” Nielsen says the FDA doesn’t know what the other 99 percent is, and its system of checks and balances for food safety is based on laws written when the U.S. was basically self-sufficient within its own borders. “There’s going to have to be a radical change in organization funding and staffing [in the FDA],” says Nielsen. “In six years as Director of Import Operations, nobody could give me a roster of people working full time in import operations. Because of the way it is set up, there are very few working full time.” He adds that trusting milk-based and derived products from China could be a risk without verifying their quality and safety. “Part of the fallacy is that people will throw out the notion ‘trust but verify’,” says Nielsen. “In certain circumstances I think you first have to verify to build the trust. I think China is a perfect example of that.” Health Impacts of Melamine According to the FDA, melamine is a compound mainly used in commercial and industrial applications, and has no approved use in human or animal food in the U.S. There is little-to-no reportable medical research data on the effects of melamine on human beings. Studies of the effects on animals were begun in the wake of the Chinese melamine pet food scandal last year, but human cases have been reported starting only in September. There is no commercially available test to check for melamine poisoning in a human, but the tens of thousands of cases in China have shed some additional light on its impacts on people. He points out that bladder cancer is typically asymptomatic, but someone afflicted might have blood in their urine. But kidney stones, which have been found in many babies in China, do cause symptoms. “The typical kidney stones will cause pain that starts usually in the flank area and radiate down to the groin,” Dr. Pandya. “They can also cause nausea and vomiting.” Insomnia could also result from the pain, he added. Ignorance of Foreign Markets At least 41 countries around the world have either completely or partially blocked the import of products from China which may contain melamine. Art Official Intelligence: Bionix Long-awaited 2nd installment of the Art Official Intelligence trilogy, from Tommy Boy Records. In the De La Soul diet, AOI: Bionix is a solid hip-hop meal--no fancy turntablism and few fluffy comedy sketches, just down-home beats and rhymes served straight up. Bionix is a mellow, intelligent album that aims to educate and get a laid-back party groove on at the same time. "Baby Phat" is a note to all the ladies that those couple extra pounds only mean there's more of them to love, and "Held Down" takes on a new, post-Septempter 11 relevance with the lyrics "And when I'm watching the news / And my daughter walk in / To choose to ask / 'Why were all the people on the floor, sleeping, covered in red?' / I told her, 'They came lookin' for God but found religion instead.'" Of course, De La Soul aren't comfortable preaching for too long, and at the other end of the spectrum lie sex and drug duds like "Pawn Star" (featuring Shell Council) and "Peer Pressure" (featuring Cypress Hill's B Real) that flog their subject matter dead. Even with a couple weak offerings, though, Bionix is more on par than subpar. The album's mix of gospel, funk, and hip-hop comes to a head on "Trying People," a soothing balm of a song about trying to make life a little less complicated. --Jennifer Maerz (18) redcup ginger lemon tea, taste so good too me, I love to sit in the evening time when I am about ready for bed (3:00am) usually... well I can't help it... Cor and Wim were twinbrothers , but as was already visible from the day they were born and as was also very visible on this picture , they were definitely part of a non-identical pair of twinbrothers . The birth of these twinbrothers , several months before this picture must have been taken , was a very special one , to say the least ......... The Pied Wagtail (Montacilla alba) is a common and widespread British bird which usually retreats from the North of Scotland in Winter. It may also be found from Iceland, Northern Norway and Novaya Zemlya in the Southern Hemisphere to the North Mediterranean Coast and North-West Africa. The adult Summer male of the species is jet black above, with a black head and breast, interrupted by white cheeks and forehead. The underparts are white with grey on the flanks. The Summer female is similarly patterned, but with dark slate-grey plumage on the back and wings. The Winter adult bird has a dark grey back with white face and throat surrounded by black markings. Immature birds tend to be much drabber (almost yellowish-grey in color) and less well-marked. The Pied Wagtail is a slender bird which grows to be approximately seven inches in length and weighs from seventeen to twenty-five grams. The bill is black and the eyes are hazel. The Pied Wagtail nests from April through August. It will choose holes in buildings, thick vegetation, old nests of other species or the open style of nest box. It has also been known to use the abandoned nests of Swallows. The nest is usually built from leaves, twigs, moss and grass, then lined with feathers and hair. The female customarily lays two broods of three to five whitish eggs with dark spots. The incubation period is eleven to thirteen days. The Pied Wagtail is very attentive to its fledglings and will continue to feed and train them for three or four weeks after they are able to fly. The adult bird will also defend its chicks with great courage when in danger, or endeavor to draw aside the enemy by employing various little tricks. The Pied Wagtail is meticulous in the cleanliness of its nest and has been known to remove lightweight materials (such as paper or straw) which have been laid as a mark by which to find its home. This is an ever-active bird which wags its long tail almost incessantly, even whilst standing still, and one which is often recognized because of its characteristic darting, flitting, running and chasing after insects...the Pied Wagtail's natural food. This bird may be tempted to inhabit gardens by the provision of mealworms, peanut granules or even something as simple as grated cheese. The flight of the Pied Wagtail is deeply undulating, almost awkward in style. Nonetheless, its black-and-white tail feathers make for a striking and most obvious bird when in flight. It has an explosive disyllabic "chis-ick" or "seel-vit" call, together with a one-note "chik." The song is a twittering version of the call, somewhat rambling and lively in its warble, and may be delivered from the ground, from a perch or while on the wing. It is sometimes given when other birds are being chased away, but the Pied Wagtail's main method of marking territories is through visual display. The Pied Wagtail has adapted well to living alongside humans and most of its preferred habitats bring it into close contact with people. Therefore, it is as much a town-dweller as it is a country-dweller. However, this bird is not a particular favorite of nurserymen since it tends to foul tomatoes, chrysanthemums and carnation blooms. The Pied Wagtail has severely declined from British waterways since the 1970s (which could be an indication of habitat problems) and it is far less common today than it was half a century ago. During the Winter months, large roosts are frequently seen in trees on the edges of supermarket cars parks and other such locations, which tend to be warmer than the equivalent places in the countryside. Approximately ten percent of British gardens have a resident Pied Wagtail, which will often become quite reasonably tame. By classification, the Pied Wagtail belongs to the Passerine (or perching) family of birds, characterized by the feet being adapted for perching on trees or on the ground, rather than for grasping, wading or swimming. The Passerines have a slender bill, angular between the nostrils with the uper mandible notched. The wings have one of the scapulars as long as the closed wing, giving the bird a resemblance to the waders. The tail is long and kept constantly in vertical motion. They Would Lean Forward And Tell Me I Was Fat. Growing Up, I've Always Had Baby Fat. I'm 19 Years Old And I Still Have Some lol, But I've Never Been Overweight. Ever. Elise Goes Away... [14:49] Caty Weezles: The sights of the man she loathed right now had her running ... away. She ducked into the first opening she saw and cowered there for a moment. Peering through the gates on occassion. Back to Elise. [14:51] Elise Capalini sits in the graveyard quiet when everyone has gone, near the fresh grave that Eamon dug for the birds. One crow. a baby from the looks of it, flies down from the masoleum's roof, to sit on the grave and nose at the dirt. She watches the bird and thinks of the Mass that just was. She wonders if they will ever have a normal one again. She looks up when she hears movement, and catches sight of Caty, who appears to be running from someone. "Caty...are you all right?" she asks. She stands slowly, but doesn't yet approach. [14:54] Caty Weezles: The familiar voice through the air had her turning, she shook then and backed into the wall, chocolate eyes looking to Elise as a threat too. There over her shoulder was a small bag. It didn't look full by any means. And under her arm she carried a small treasure chest music box. It chimed as she thudded against the concrete. "Go.. go..." She actually stuttered. [14:57] Elise Capalini watches Caty turn and hears the faint music from her bag when she rocks against the wall. "Are -you- going?" she asks her. Judging by the running and the bag, she wonders if the girl is running away from home. She takes a couple steps forward, though slowly, and keeps her hands visible, not wanting to frighten the girl any more than she already is. [15:00] Caty Weezles spread one arm across the wall, feeling it for length and how far she could creep before turning and bolting. Terror filled her eyes, the music chiming in now and then. The music was wound too tight, for too long, too many times and was now offkey of the normal soothing music it once played. She shook her head some, her voice croaked, "You go 'way. Cats are bad." [15:02] Elise Capalini stays where she is and doesn't come any closer. She hates hearing those words from Caty; they feel like a physical blow. She sinks back to the ground, her shoulders slumped. "Why are cats bad, Caty?" she asks softly. "The gate there is open--if you need to run..." She doesn't want the girl to run, but understands well the need to, the need to know escape was an option. [15:06] Caty Weezles: Tears already threatened to spill down her cheeks. She was ready to go wherever it was they were going to. She thought she was leaving somewhere, "You shooted my Daddy. Daddy says cats are bad! You have to go to jail and Mister Eamon too!" She shouted across the way. It was a choking shout, the kind where you can't catch your breath to get the words out in one stream. "God shouldn't miss next time!" [15:09] Elise Capalini's throat tightens at the sound of Caty's voice. Oh she'd sounded like that a time or two herself. She blinks, unshed tears stinging her own eye. "I shot your daddy," she says and nods. "Because he was shooting at Eamon--because..." She draws in a breath and closes her eye for a moment. When she looks at Caty again, she says, "You're angry because we hurt someone you love. We acted the way we did because...we were hurt, too." [15:13] Caty Weezles shook her head frantically as those tears dripped. She sniffed heavily and shot her arm out pointing and accusing, "You made blood! BLOOD! Blood makes people go away, you tried to make my daddy go away! Mister Eamon tried to make my daddy go away! God taked my mommy and I has to keep my daddy! YOU DONT GET TO TAKE MY DADDY! GOD CANT HAVE HIM TOO!" She screamed and shook. Clutching the music box as tightly as she could. It's sour notes somehow lifting high and matching the tension. [15:16] Elise Capalini finds herself nodding, at everything Caty says. "Blood does make people go away," she says, lifting a hand to wipe the spilled tears from her cheek, "My daddy went away in blood." That night cuts across her vision and she takes a shuddering breath. "Caty, I'm so sorry...so sorry." Her voice breaks and she finds herself crying freely now, letting herself feel the fear from last week, showing Caty how it touched her too. [15:19] Caty Weezles sucked in a hitched breath. Simply asking in that same choked voice, "Why Miss Elise? Why do you want to make my daddy go away from me?" Her nose stuffed, she wiped at it with the back of her hand. Unfortunately, the world into which this new Aboriginal generation is being born is sometimes difficult and often dysfunctional. The life expectancy for an indigenous child in Australia today is 17 years less than a non-indigenous child born alongside them. This is because the social landscape that modern Aborigines inhabit is a blighted one, worn out by multi-generational defeats, failures and neglect. In the cities and rural towns, where many were relocated by government policies of assimilation in the past century, and where others have moved in search of work, ghettoes abound. In regional and remote areas, where many have remained on and around the former religious missions and government reserves, basic services such as clean drinking water and sewerage are often unreliable. And as the 21st century dawned on Australia's bush and her outback, the drought has made a hard land even harder. The statistics are severe. The most comprehensive government report on the plight of Australia's Aborigines, Overcoming Indigenous Disadvantage, found in 2007 that the median household weekly income of indigenous people has risen 10 per cent in a decade, to $340, compared with $618 for non-indigenous people. But in spite of more than $3 billion in annual federal spending on indigenous Australians, the imprisonment rate for indigenous women surged 34 per cent between 2002 and 2006. For men it increased 22 per cent. Indigenous imprisonment rates rose 32 per cent overall from 2000 to 2006 and are now 13 times higher than the rate for non-indigenous Australians. In health, indigenous infant mortality rates have improved, but are still two to three times the national average, while there has been no change in the numbers of low birth weight babies and hearing problems among children, which is in epidemic proportions in remote communities. And barely a week goes by in Australia without a fresh tale of child abuse and neglect in indigenous communities, a predicament that led the government of former Prime Minister John Howard to rush through a suite of draconian and controversial measures to make children safe in Northern Territory communities that became known as ``The Intervention''. But the desperate coincidence of an exploding population and imploding infrastructure is rarely as stark as it is in drought-ridden western New South Wales, where the birthrate among Aboriginal women is twice that of non-Aboriginal women, despite persistent high mortality rates and record rates of incarceration. For some young Aboriginal parents, issues such as alcoholism, unemployment and limited education are still barriers.
