My friends were to meet me, but the bus had been delayed and they were at the wrong place.I was scared and lost when I walked out a door and found myself on 42nd St.noise and lights and too many people for this country girl. After I realized that I better go back inside, I saw my friends coming to meet me.This was going to be an adventure and I had just gotten here.After settling in my friend Michele's house in Bay Ridge,Brooklyn.We hit the subway to go into the'city'. Walking the same block that John Travolta had strode down in Saturday Night Fever, I looked up at the EL(elevated train) and Michele handed me a token.The train cars were just like you thought they should look-covered with graffiti,trash and a bum or two.We took the train to West 4th street and into punk central. Mohawks,leather,chains and Doc Martens were the outfit of the moment.The street held an odd mix of characters-tourists taking pictures of punks flipping them the bird and teens from Jersey trying to be cool.The smell had the sweet smokey scent of Djarum clove cigarrettes and an underlying stink of urine and garbage.Sounds of honking horns and cursing cab drivers could barely be heard over the music that boomed from the open doors of Flip,a punk clothing and accessories store.It was either the Sex Pistols or The Ramones and I was drawn in, coming face to face with a very large man called Mongo.He was store security but he hid a sweetness behind his hulking facade.I did not know then that exactly 1 year later this man would save my life. Baby Dallas

Two weeks after Dallas came home, when he was just a wee baby of ten weeks - he began to have seizures. The first one was on my son's birthday, March 31. We were so scared, we did not know what to do.
After a series of mild episodes during the week, on Easter Sunday Dallas suffered a massive seizure which left him unable to walk. The vet said he would never recover and to put him to sleep, but I wasn't ready to do that with a twelve week old puppy. So I found a new vet!

I had to carry him outside to go potty. I had to hold his trembling head so he could eat and drink. My new, wonderful vet worked with me constantly trying to stabilize the pup. She did not hold out much hope, but we did have him stabalized and that was something. At first he did not seem to improve, and I had an appointment at U of M to have him put to sleep if the treatments did not work.

Then, suddenly, Dallas began to improve. Slowly, steadily, he became able to do things on his own. A miracle happened!

We kept our appointment at the U of M Vet School - so that we could walk in, triumphant. Dallas' charmed the entire staff there and they were all so happy with me - they knew his whole story as my vet had been working with them all along. :) EKG showed minimal brain damage. Dallas was going to be fine!

It was discovered that Dallas had a bad reaction to vaccines he had been given. His immune system was not mature enough to handle the vaccinations. Three of his other littermates also had reactions, but none as bad as Dallas. Due to this I never allowed him to be used as a stud dog, even though he was a gorgeous boy.

Remember the photos last summer of JR lake, and the vet on the horse? That was Dr. Seidl, the vet who saved Dallas' life when he was just a young sprout!
Dallas was and always will be my miracle dog - and oh, so special to me. We bonded very closely during those dark days, a bond that will never be broken.

Friday.. just thinking about Friday is making my chest tense up a bit. This was a great day and a terrible day. What made this day terrible is still bothering me but Im doing my best to push it away every time it comes back up.. I spent a lot of the day trying not to cry, and not doing too well. After a bit I left Ryan playing games and went and got in the shower, I plugged up the bottom and just sat in there.. showers are awesome. It didnt take long for Ryan to come in because hes amazing like that and during our shower/bath the day went from terrible to pretty darn great. We were in there til the water went cold. After a bit we went and got his hair cut. The bald lady that did his hair was pretty cool lol. She indirectly called Ryan a fox lol but it was ok cause shes a lesbian. Then we went to the movies at 10:20. We saw Arthur. The arms on the chairs went up so we cuddled through almost the whole movie. The movie was really good! It was really funny, but also made me want to cry a couple of times. I liked the ending a lot too. It was about 12:30 when the movie ended and poor Ryan had to get up early the next morning so we went back to the house and went to sleep.

A Tribute to Ivory, 1996 - 2008

You were bought from a backyard breeder before we fully understood the need to support only reputable breeders. Your legs were too short; your tail docked too short; over the years, your nose turned liver with a black splotch in the middle; your gait was like a rabbit. Yet you had personality plus, an active and happy little girl your whole life who was always ready for a tummy rub, tracking down critters in the backyard, protecting us from thunder and those animals on TV, and helping us dry off after we showered. You kept all of our other poodles in line and never failed to tattle on Bonnie when she tried to counter surf while we were relaxing in the den. You got so much joy out of simply living.

As a puppy, we remember how you would grab mouthfuls of your food, run into the den, and then spend the next 10 minutes playing with each piece individually, throwing it up in the air, batting it around, pouncing on it, and then finally eating it with such relish that only you could display. Or how you would pick up the water bowl and bring it from the kitchen into the den when you thought it needed to be filled. You were a jumper and climber extraordinaire. Baby gates didn’t stop you – you were jumping them at six months. There was not a table anywhere that you did not find a way to get on.

Despite your short legs, you were the fastest little poodle we ever saw and up until almost the end you were still tearing across the yard at breakneck speed, flying in the air for at least six feet as you jumped the small step up between the two patio sections.

The years were kind to you and, thankfully, you enjoyed good health except for that cranky patella that occasionally acted up in the last few years and your minor kidney problem. When you fractured you jaw in June, you never cried or yelped in pain and endured it all with your usual grace and good disposition. We tried our best to keep you healthy and whole, but, in the end, it just wasn’t enough. How could we know that the sprain in you bad leg and the reaction to the Metacam were the precursors of something more ominous? As usual, your blood work was perfect, but first the x-ray hinted at and then the ultrasound confirmed the worse: a mass in your spleen. We remained hopeful, but surgery dashed our hopes. All your other internal organs were good, but there were nodules outside the spleen near the stomach and, with the lumps that had appeared over the last two days on your hip and back, we knew what had to be done. At twelve years, the doctor confirmed that the chances the mass was benign were small. We so desperately wanted to keep you with us, we debated removing the spleen, but we knew the odds were well against you having a decent recovery and quality of life. We absolutely were not going to subject you to misery for a few days, a few weeks, or a few months more because of our selfishness. As you lay sleeping peacefully on the operating table, we said our goodbyes and allowed the doctor to usher you from this life.

So ends an era in our lives and marriage as Ivory was the last of our original four. Unexpected loses, whether human or poodle, are always the hardest. Ivory, we cannot believe that you are gone, especially so soon after Rusty last year. Your place at the head of the bed between us is a gaping hole. The house is too quiet. Our hearts are broken in two. We are thankful that you lived a healthy and happy life. You brought us great pleasure in sharing our lives with yours. We love you always.

A CJ6180GCH 18m low entry rear-engine articulated bus build by Changjiang-Bus-Corporation (CBC)-Iveco on an Iveco chassis

CJ6180GCH is the first mass-produced step-less articulated bus in China. This model is generally considered specially-developed for Beijing BRT Line 1 opened in the end of 2005---indeed, the only 50 units of CJ6180GCH are all assigned to that line.

The chassis of CJ6180GCH (also the chassis model) is introduced by CBC from Iveco Buses, now part of Irisbus. Derived from the well-established Iveco 391, CJ6180GCH chassis is not a completely original 391---most European Iveco 391s apply a rear-mounted transverse engine, while CJ6180GCH applies the T-drive design (rear-center-mounted, longitudinal engine), due to the inexperience of manufacture and maintenance related to transverse engines. The power train consists of an Iveco F2BE0682F*B 310hp Euro III diesel engine and a ZF 5HP502C 5AT gearbox with integrated retarder. All axles are Iveco products, although the conventional driving axle is uncommon on city buses in Iveco’s homeland. The linkage between the sections is no wonder a German-made Hubner electronically-controlled hydraulic articulation bogie. In general, the EuroRider provides a comfortable ride implied in its name.

CBC acquired the exterior pattern of Marcopolo Gran Viale by the contract of Marcopolo minibus manufacture; then CBC created a duet of Iveco chassis and Marcopolo body on CJ6180GCH. The three doors are on the left side, but the first and the second doors are a little narrower than the third. As the result of longitudinal engine arrangement, the step-less area ends at the rear axle---two steps lead to the raised floor behind the third door. However, wheelchair space and baby seats are both available. All destination displays outside are magnetic, presenting the origin, an arrow, and the terminal or “Short-line” plus the actual terminal. On the back of the side destination displays installed the electronic station indicators inside the passenger cabin. Notice the windows of CJ6180GCH is tinted brown---from 2006, tinted windows no longer appears on new buses in Beijing, reason unknown.

With CBC diminished and Iveco joined Irisbus, CJ6180GCH has gone out of production, and the 50 in Beijing are carefully treasured".

In the picture, Fleet No. B0016 (BRT buses, code 0016, actually operated by Division 2) has just pulled out of the origin station Qianmen (Zhengyang Gate) in the heart of Beijing to the South of Tian’anmen Square. The 50 CJ6180GCH Euroriders are numbered B0001 to B0050. The prototype is actually a right-side-door version, but now it is believed to be one of the 50-unit fleet. 50 articulated buses were far away from the enormous flow along BRT Line 1---the dispatcher frequently borrowed a variety of regular buses from other lines in the beginning months of Line 1.

Dreaming wasn't the answer. Everyone I knew had a dream and shared it with me. Some hadn't happened, some had yet to happen, but most would never come to pass. Last year, I knew a man who had two legs. This year, he has only one. How do these things happen?

I sleep like a baby, it's the restless wake I have to contend with. How strange that pleasure comes down to something so simple as food. Truth is, it's the simple pleasures that keep us contained. Starvation is an illusion. Have you attempted photosynthesis? There's a fine line between plants and humans. My heart is not heart-shaped, strangely enough. I guess you can't understand that. As hard as it might be for you to believe, inspiration is meaningless. Creation is disconnected. If I ever let you think it was up to me, I was only a container pretending to be food and water. You should have known better than to let me feed you glass and plastic.

Loss is so hard to photograph. Blank spaces are like lost memories, misinterpretations of deja vu. The sudden remembrance of absence. Oh, that's right, there is nothing there.

Dreaming isn't the answer. Plans will crush you with their infinite possibilities. All the endings and imaginary hopes of "choose your own adventure" stories will send you hurtling down the path of most resistance. Change is essential, but it never seems to stick. The temporary misdirection of hope and false futures take your spirit. Dogs don't hate their chains, they are a part of them, a piece of what matters most to their existence. Cats don't miss their claws. I don't miss my hope, my peace, my faith. I never knew them anyhow.

What is noble? What is true? What is pure? I asked God to humble me, and never withdrew the request. I've lost everything inside me that mattered, while all outside remained intact. The truth was that I'd never let my world go, but I had so much more to give. Laws are so strict, so solid in their own creation. Heavenly beings need not interfere. Great dreams of broken men crowd my thoughts. I was one of them sooner than I knew possible, even as I still saw myself as a child. Magic is so fleeting. Words and images are all I've known, and now it feels so empty. Why am I so empty?

Everyone has those simple answers, those quick fixes. "Just embrace this one drug/belief/faith/philosophy and all will return to normal." False teachers are easy to spot. "Teacher" is a false thing. "Learner" can be the only truth. But learning is such a hard road. Everyone has those metaphors, those clever anecdotes. "I've done it, so can you." There's something wrong here, am I right? We're all so damn different. Self-doubt will keep you crushed under a complete failure of motivation.

The lowest points soon appear to be the highest peaks. At the level of near-exhaustion and mental anguish, words and thoughts pour out unhindered. After all the wasted moments, pain is like currency, because it's the last thing any of us will surrender. We would give everything, EVERYTHING to avoid pain. It is the one thing that can purchase freedom. More than money, more than love, it all comes down to pain. It humbles us to a point where we'll never fully understand the importance. It crushes us, maybe even kills us.

There are so many foolish questions. There are times I feel that there is no other kind. It is not through asking that we found the truth, it was through receiving. In the end, no one welcomes the hard answers. What if, after all, there is no way out? What if your beliefs are true but not meant to set you free? What if your pain is only a lesson to others?

What if your greatest fear is that there's really nothing to be afraid of?

Dear Butternut,

Your momma's a slacker. Sorry. I'm only a week late in writing this letter, so it could be worse, eh? You could be thirteen and laying a guilt trip on me for never making a baby book for you, which, um, I haven't gotten around to yet either. Anyway.

Month five was another big month for you. We officially unswaddled you because you started rolling back to belly in your sleep. And boy, did it tick you off to wake up on your belly without your arms free to turn yourself back over. Your father and I were frankly terrified that your sleep routine would totally degenerate...and that fear was somewhat well founded, as your nap routine went out the window. But you still sleep well enough at night, at least once we finally get you asleep.

You do roll, but only a few times a week. You are much more interested in doing your "baby crunches" because you want to sit up so badly. We practice sitting up every day, and you love it. You have even "tripoded" a couple of times and impressed the pediatrician because that's a six-month school. Way to go, my little overachiever!

There's a spoon in this month's photo because it was the month of starting solids. One night shortly after you turned four months, your father announced he was bored and started feeding you baby oatmeal. Yup. This is our parenting philosophy. Have fun with that for the next couple decades.

We call you our baby bird when you're eating solids because you open up your moth for more as soon as the spoon gets within several inches. We are just sticking with oatmeal for now, but soon we will be branching out into pears, poultry, and squash. You are beginning to master putting things in your mouth, so we are looking forward to doing finger foods eventually as well.

We skipped the solid food when we went to New England for a week. Yes, your very first plane and train trips - we flew to Boston where you met your Grandpa Slotnick and Auntie Nicole and their family, and then we took a train to Maine for a reunion with your Nana's family. You were such a trooper, even though you were utterly exhausted every day due to lack of naps. And of course, everyone thought you were made of awesome.

We sing more lullabies now that you're having a harder time falling asleep, and you just stare at me in fascination. You smile little smiles, and I try so hard to not smile back so you know it's naptime and not playtime. But I am not good at playing it straight-faced, so you know I'm happy you're happy.

Speaking of that, you are such a joy. I just don't know how else to explain it. We marvel at what a happy baby you are. One of my greatest wishes for you is that you retain your ability to smile and laugh at the life's littlest joys.

How To:
Purchase a yard each of flannel and cotton/broadcloth fabric. Pre-wash. Sew ribbons as desired on the flannel. Place right sides together and sew around, leaving a pocket large enough to pull the fabric right side out. Iron, sew up pocket and sew a U-shape in the blanket to keep the fabric flat and in place. Tada! The "Kelly" Blanket!

Bassinet Pad: Take a pillow case, line it with several layers of quilt batting. Sew the bottom/opening of the pillow case closed. Sew a line down the middle to keep batting in place. Top it off with two rows (flanking middle seam) of ties (see other photos) to further keep batting in place and to add decoration!

Modern Quilt

I'm very proud of this quilt. I designed it in order to highlight the beautiful flowered fabric in the center. Yes, the squares are not perfect, that is how I wanted them. Even the quilting is unusual, straight diagonals. Isn't it a modern-looking quilt?

The fabrics are 100% cotton and has been prewashed so they won't shrink. The batting is 100% cotton, soft and warm, very good quality. The binding has been handsewn.

doesn't she look very innocent?

one would think by looking at this photo that she is very sweet, very innocent... but I assure you she is anything but. if you look closely at her bangs on her left side (that's right, your right side) you can see they are cut. this was taken two or three days ago, and now they are cut again. somehow she manages to find scissors that are hidden in the depths of this house and she immediately uses them to first cut a chunk of hair and then to make confetti with whatever paper or paperlike object is within her reach.

This "innocent" child is why I don't take showers on a regular basis and am often required to take them in the middle of the night when I am certain she is passed out and unable to cause any damage to herself or the world in general.

again using one from the archives, but it's the holidays. i really do plan to take a new pic each week to put up, i promise. but giving myself a break for now... :-)

- Contradictory to the serene baby in above pic, C hates bath time again (he hated it as a newborn). But we think that's due to him being overtired when he goes in, and the fact that he's too big for his tub.
- He's moving forward! Not quite a crawl, more of a scoot. He gets on all fours, scoots his rear forward in this big pulling motion, lunges forward onto his tummy, and repeats. So, he's now mobile in all directions - time to babyproof, I suppose.
- About ready to cut another tooth, I think - giving all the same signs as when the bottom two broke through.
- Walks when you hold his hands.
- Can stand unsupported for just a second or two.
- Has upgraded to a convertible car seat.

Cycle of Life Begins Anew ~ 1:12th Scale

“A Little Tale”…

On a beautiful Spring morning when the sun was shining in the Enchanted Woods, a young tiny little bird finished building her first nest on a worn blue chair situated in the backyard garden that belonged to either a fairy or wizard. To her, the chair seemed like the perfect place for a cradle for her babies. Her babies’ nest would be flat so that the eggs would not roll off and crack and the high back of the old chair would serve as a protection from both predators and winds cleansing the earth of winter’s debris.

On the bottom, she had carefully laid soft beautiful feathers on top of leaves to form a base to keep her babies warm and dry, in case of rain, and also to cushion the chair’s hardness. And, she also placed feathers on the back of the chair for further protection. Then, instinctively, she weaved a nest of just the right things she found in the woods such as twigs, grasses, and other items to create her babies’ perfect cradle.

Building her first nest was very hard work and very tiring. The tiny little bird could only carry a small amount in her little beak so she had to fly back and forth, to and fro, here and there, and up and down many times to complete it. Being almost a baby herself, her beak’s strength, as well as her entire little body’s, were not yet what they would be next year and the year after that.

When she was almost finished, she examined her work of art. She twittered and circled around it, singing and chirping with glee. She then decided she had to make one more trip and then it would be ready for her eggs. So, off she flew to bring back that one last finishing piece.

While she was gone, the owner of the old blue chair, a fairy with long blonde silky hair, happened upon the newly created nest on her chair amidst her butterfly garden.

She was filled with delight and eed, “A nest! A nest in my enchanted garden at my enchanted cottage! How lucky can a fairy get?” Carefully and keeping her distance, she examined the new nest. It looked soft and safe, but a bit, well, drab. Of course, it had to blend in with its surroundings and nature so predators would not snatch the little family that soon would be living there, but … still. Little baby birds were going to be laid there, hatch, and grow in that cozy nest on “her” old chair.

It had to be spruced up and made special. So, the fairy ran back to her enchanted cottage, cut a blossoming branch from one of her inside plants, infused it with fairy magic so the blossoms would remain and not wither and die, and then placed the sprig on the back corner of the nest. Standing back and looking at it, she clapped her hands with delight. “Why that old chair never looked as beautiful as it does now!” Then, she ran back to her enchanted cottage, quite pleased with her own handiwork, so that the little mother bird would not see her and be frightened away.

As she was running home, she turned back and looked once again at the old chair with the new nest and the beautiful sprig of blossoms she had placed there and thought, “Just wait until the little Mommy bird returns and sees the flowers. I just know she will be delighted!”

The city's driving me out of my mind.

and lands in the grass and weeps for his dignity.
Next time he will not aim so high.
Yeah, next time, neither will I.
Now a mother takes loans out, sends her kids off to colleges.
Her family's reduced to names on a shopping list.
While, a coroner kneels beneath a great, wooden crucifix.
He knows there's worse things than being alone.
And so I've learned to retreat at the first sign of danger.
I mean, why wait around, if it's just to surrender?
An ambition, I've found, can lead only to failure.
I do not read the reviews.
No, I am not singing for you.
Well I stood dropping a coin into the pit of a well.
And I would throw my whole billfold if I thought it would help.
With all these wishes I make,
I should buy something real, at least a telephone call home.
Well, my teachers, they built this retaining wall of memory,
all those multiple choices I answered so quickly.
And got my grades back and forgot just as easily,
but as least I got an A.
And so I don't have them to blame.
Well I should stop pointing fingers;
reserve my judgment of all those public action figures,
the cowboy presidents.
So loud behind the bullhorn, so proud they can't admit
when they've made a mistake.
While poison ink spews from a speechwriter's pen,
he knows he don't have to say it,
so it, it don't bother him.
"Honesty", "Accuracy" is just "Popular Opinion."
And the approval rating's high,
and so someone's gonna die.
Well ABC, NBC, CBS: Bullshit.
They give us fact or fiction? I guess an even split.
And each new act of war is tonight's entertainment.
We're still the pawns in their game.
As they take eye for an eye until no one can see,
we must stumble blindly forward, repeating history.
Well, I guess we all fit into your slogan
on the fast food marquee:
Red blooded, White skinned oh and the Blues.
Oh and the Blues, I got the Blues! That's me! That's me!
Well, I awoke in relief.
My sheets and tubes were all tangled weak from whiskey and pills,
in a Chicago hospital.
And my father was there, in a chair, by the window, staring so far away.
I tried talking, just whispered, "...so sorry...so selfish..."
He stopped me and said, "Child I love you regardless
and there's nothing you could do that would ever change this.
I'm not angry. It happens. But you just can't do it again."
So now I try to keep up, I've been exchanging my currency.
While a million objects pass through my periphery.
Now I'm rubbing my eyes 'cause they're starting to bother me.
I've been staring too long at the screen.
But where was it when I first heard a sweet sound of humility?
It came to my ears in the goddamn loveliest melody.
How grateful I was then to be part of the mystery,
to love and to be loved. Let's just hope that is enough.
