Milestone on the B197, Ayot St Peter, Herts
The original milestone erected for the Welwyn Turnpike Trust 1726. The date of the stone is not known but might be some time after the turnpike opened. After long years of weathering all traces of cut legends have been eroded away although it might well have used Roman numerals.
When the adjacent A1 road was being brought up to motorway standard as the A1(M) this milestone and the milepost (now standing on the opposite side of the B197) were discarded by the contractors. They were rescued by Piers Plowman in 1972. Welwyn Hatfield Council succeeded in getting Eastren Region Road Construction Unit to re-erect them.
The small plaque set at the base of the stone give details of both artifacts. Support from Welwyn Hatfield District's Community Fund made possible the erection of the plaque in 2006.

Milestone on the A6033 at Walsden on the old packhorse route across the Pennines via Hebden Bridge. No benchmark on this one...because one is carved on a stone house ten feet away.
