The Old & Silent Piano In the Palace Saloon in Prescott, Arizona

The Old & Silent Piano In the Palace Saloon in Prescott, Arizona

This is a photograph that I took of one of the two old upright baby grand pianos that sit in the Palace Saloon in the town of Prescott, Arizona.

The Palace Saloon was opened for business in September 1877 and is located on "Whiskey Row" in downtown Prescott, It is the oldest continually operated saloon in the entire state of Arizona. During the late 1870's, this saloon was frequented by Wyatt Earp and his brothers, Doc Holiday, Big Nose Kate, and an assortment of other gamblers, gunfighters, cowboys, ranchers, and drifters. For a short time, Wyatt Earp's brother, Virgil, was the town constable for Prescott which meant that Wyatt made frequent stops to visit him. Whenever he visited, he paid a visit to the Palace Saloon.

The saloon was burned on July 14, 1900 in a fire that struck the entirety of Whiskey Row (a long string of saloons, brothels, et cetera). However by 1901, the saloon was back open for business once again, complete with a full bar and a Chinese restaurant. Today, the saloon still sells alcohol and you can order a fine meal.....just the same way that you could back in the 1870's.

These establishments employed itinerant piano players who kept the patrons entertained by their playing. This old piano once filled the saloon with beautiful sounds....now it sits in quiet testimony to its colorful past.

How can a society that exists on instant mashed potatoes, packaged cake mixes, frozen dinners, and instant cameras teach patience to its young? ~Paul Sweeney

+++++++++++

from the moment i learned to play, i wanted a baby grand. a true pianist can't play on some average "upright" and who in the world really has room for a grand piano in their home? right?... i mean....not an average/everyday person who isn't a musician for a living... so... i always thought...a baby grand would do just fine for me.... afterall, i'm not a musician. :)

one Christmas Eve, my husband's aunt & uncle said they were ready to put this beauty on the curb... or give it to a charity or church or something...they just didn't want it anymore. i said... "uh... how about the "stacy's always wanted a baby grand charity"??"

$250 to move/tune it later... it graces the northwest corner of our great room, and in my opinion, it's the best corner of our home. everytime i really stop to think about it, i realize sometimes things really ARE worth the wait.
