Turtles!

Turtles!

What a lunch time nature walk I had today! Only yesterday several staff had commented to me that no-one has at yet reported seeing turtles in the moat/wetlands of Bundoora, La Trobe University.
And come to think of it...that was right! Its been a very long time since I saw any - and today....not only one but two of them! They are very shy and when they heard my footsteps on the gravel path, they both disappeared under the water.
One moved away entirely, and this one stayed long enough to get a few quick photos before it too disappeared.

I have no idea what make and model this is...but would love to know.

***** PS - after searching, I think this is a Snake-necked turtle,
Chelodina longicollis **********

Further around the moat was both the mother and father Gippsland Water Dragons.

It was a lovely walk today!

The eastern snake necked turtle lives in swamps and slow moving waters in eastern Australia and can live to be 50 years old. Its shell is a brown color with black edges measures up to 30 cm, (1 foot), long. The underside of the shell is lighter in color and has black lines. This turtle got its name from its extremely long neck, which can be the full length of the shell. Unlike other turtles, the eastern snake necked turtle bends it's neck under it's shell to hide and hunt. It will approach its prey with its head sideways and when it is at close range it will snap its neck like a snake to catch its prey. Since this turtle is carnivorous its diet consists of insects, worms, tadpoles, frogs and small fish that it either swallows whole or shreds into pieces with its front paws.

The eastern snake necked turtle is also known as “the stinker”. When it is disturbed or in danger it will emit a foul smell from its glands that can be sprayed up to three feet to repel its predators.

Turtle Bay Sunbathers

Turtle Bay Sunbathers

Jennifer (Jen's Photography) and I went out to do some errands and stopped at The Hollows conservation site to get some photos before we did our shopping. I spotted these turtles hauled out and enjoying the sun. I was able to "catch" them since I had my long lens and didn't disturb them. There are 6 turtles in this photo...
