Magazine Editors Talk to Writers Based on incisive interviews with editors from such leading publications as Esquire, Parade, Field & Stream, American Baby and Ladies' Home Journal, this indispensable book gives you all the information you need to write successfully for magazines. Forty magazine editors tell all: what they look for in a story, how to approach an editor, and how best to break in to the market. The most important element, it seems, is the query letter. "The writer must put almost as much work into the query," says Fran Carpenter, a senior editor at Parade, "as he or she would put into the article." The query must be long enough to convey the gist of the story, but not so long as to reveal your writing faults. It should be addressed to a specific editor, and it should spell her name (and everything else) right. It should be infused with personality and passion, and it should convey to the editor that you have already done an extensive amount of reporting or research on the subject. Finally, "don't forget that your query is also a clip," advises Claudia Valentino, who has edited at Penthouse, American Health, and Popular Science. "The query is the first unedited writing sample a writer sends to an editor." --Jane Steinberg (15) Cruisin' in the Thunderbird (2002) This is a bad scan of the original photo that I took at the 2002 Woodward Dream Cruise (film camera, not digital). I always talk about entering photo contests when I see entry forms in my photography magazines or baby magazines or web contests, but have never entered a contest... until now. Kris pushed me to submit this photo to the Detroit News Dream Cruise contest. And guess what? I just got the call that I won. There were over 120 entries in my category. Hilarious considering it's my first contest (and still the only photo contest I've entered to this day). I'm greatly surprised and humbled that the photo editors of a major newspaper actually liked my pic. Quite a compliment and motivator. Jan 7th, 2007 Strong boy on tummy time. This photo we actually submitted to "Baby Talk" magazine's cutest baby contest. We will know if we made finals this summer. baby talk magazine photo contest This collection of more than 60 articles from GrowerTalks magazine is written for professional growers by the industry's leading floriculture experts, academic researchers, and professional growers.
