Gorgeous French actress Dany Saval (1942) was the lithe and lovely leading lady in both fluffy comedies and thrillers of the late 1950’s and early 1960’s.

Dany Saval was born as Danielle Nadine Suzanne Savalle in 1942 in in a slum area of Paris, France. The Germans had just before released her father, a factory worker, from a prisoner-of-war camp. Dany started her career at 8, as a child-dancer. Later she became a Can-Can girl at the Moulin Rouge. Her first film appearance was a small part in L'eau vive/The Girl and the River (1958, Francois Villiers) starring Pascale Audret. The film, based on a screenplay by pacifist writer Jean Giono, won a Golden Globe as Best Foreign-Language Film in 1959. She then appeared in the French answer to Rebel Without A Cause, Les Tricheurs/The Cheaters (1958, Marcel Carne), as the fiancee of Pierre Brice. Les Tricheurs tells the story of disaffected Parisian youth who have lost their way in an atmosphere of existentialism, sexual liberation and disrespect for traditional and religious values. On the huge success of Les Tricheurs followed bigger roles in such films as Asphalte/Asphalt (1959, Herve Bromberger) with Francoise Arnoul, La verte moisson/Green Harvest (1959, Francois Villiers) and the supernatural thriller Pleins feux sur l'assassin/Spotlight on a Murderer (1961, Georges Franju) starring Pierre Brasseur.

Suddenly one of Disney’s talent scouts saw Dany Saval on a magazine cover and after a screentest Walt Disney signed her to a six-film contract. In her first film, Moon Pilot (1962, James Neilson), she played a mysterious extraterrestrial opposite astronaut Tom Tryon. Hal Erickson of All Movie Guide likes the film: “Moon Pilot is an engaging Disney sci-fi comedy that manages to shoot off a few neat and surprisingly satirical barbs at the hypertense US/Russia ‘space race’ of the era.” On IMDB, reviewer San Diego comments: “Watch it for Dany Saval... (she) makes the film worth watching.” Despite these positive reviews, the film bombed and Dany Saval would make only one more American film. Today she is probably best known as one of the lovely airline stewardesses being shuffled around by Tony Curtis and Jerry Lewis in the slapstick comedy Boeing Boeing (1965, John Rich). IMDB reviewer Moonspinner55 writes: “Perky Dany Saval (as ‘Air France’) is the stand-out amongst the lovely ladies, none of whom gets an actual character to play.” In between she appeared in several fluffy French comedies opposite such comedians as Louis de Funes and Darry Cowl. She also appeared opposite Michele Morgan in the crime thriller Constance Aux Enfers/Web of Fear (1964, Francois Villiers). In 1965 she married distinguished composer Maurice Jarre, with whom she had a daughter, Stefanie Jarre. She then retired temporarily from the screen to raise her child.

In 1970, Dany Saval made a come-back on TV in the popular comedy series Les saintes cheries/The Sweet Saints starring Micheline Presle. More TV work and films followed. She was the leading lady in the spaghetti western Si puo fare... amigo/Saddle Tramps (1972, Maurizio Lucidi) starring Bud Spencer and Jack Palance. In the popular action comedy L’Animal/The Animal (1977, Claude Zidi), she appeared opposite Jean-Paul Belmondo and Raquel Welch. And she played a supporting part in the detective comedy Inspecteur la Bavure/Inspector Blunder (1980, Claude Zidi) starring Coluche and Gerard Depardieu. Her last (TV) film was La baleine blanche/Children and the White Whale (1987, Jean Kerchbron). Then, Dany Saval retired from the film and entertainment business. She married three times. Her first marriage was with pr-man Roger Chaland in 1958. Her second marriage with Maurice Jarre ended in a divorce in 1967. Since 1973, she is married to host and journalist Michel Drucker, with whom she resides in Paris.

DAY 125: Welcome to the Future

So I finally got a web camera, and we all had to test it out.
I had been putting it off for for years, not seeing the necessity, but when my sister moved in July, I started searching. After reading tons of reviews I found my best and only option was the simple logitech.
Of course when It came I had to open it right up, first I tested it out on Photo Booth, then Elena, and then finally my sister got home from work.
The whole family joined in on the event, here mom is holding up Andy.
He did not quite get it. Instead of looking at the screen, he was looking at the speaker where her voice was coming from =]. (9/13/11)

Homework assignment for WAES Advanced Photoshop: use Camera Raw to process photo. In Adobe Camera Raw, adjusted Color Temperature (6200), Exposure (+.25), Fill Light (+15), and Clarity (+35). Also cropped image for better composition. In Adobe Photoshop, resized for Flickr output and applied Smart Sharpen filter (75%, .5 radius). Exported to JPEG for upload.

Image details: One Vivitar 285H flash with 24" softbox (inner diffuser only) above the camera aiming down. Gold reflector on the floor provided slight lightening under cap brim. Exposed for subject so that black background would "disappear" but still maintain some detail in the leather jacket.

Day 335 - Blinds

A set of vertical blinds in a semi-closed position. The slats are all of the same color, some shade of ivory, however they are reflecting the colors of whatever sits on the other side of them.

This was the third photo I took when my brand-new Canon EOS 5D Mark II camera was delivered to me.

Other than a small amount of sharpening added in Adobe Camera Raw, no color manipulation was performed in the original raw file.

Berlin's industrial metal sextet Rammstein was already provocative when the band nabbed unwanted U.S. press attention as favorites of the two young sociopaths behind 1999's tragic high school shootings in Columbine, Colorado. This concert video, expertly produced during a huge outdoor concert the previous summer, won't dissipate the tension between Rammstein's fans and social critics looking to find the links between such violence and the band's intense, sweeping music, especially on this uncensored edit of their nearly 100-minute set.
Sonically, the band lashes the clangorous legacy of industrial countrymen like Einsturzende Neubaten to the simpler, head-banging power chords of metallurgists like the Scorpions, Rammstein's front line of rasping, squealing guitars laced with synthesizer and pummeled by splashy drum work. The music's focal point is vocalist Till Lindemann, who half-sings, half-bellows in a guttural bass that makes most metal men sound like countertenors, an effect underscored by Lindemann's beefy, muscular physique as he stalks the stage. His macho growl and restless movement contrast with the largely motionless postures of his bandmates, which include a vampiric guitarist, a rail-thin keyboardist, and an even more spectral, bald bassist whose black-taped skull nods to S&M couture.
A massive stage set that's one part Borg, one part Blade Runner, onstage pyrotechnics, and piercing klieg lights that sweep the vast crowd pointedly synthesize Third Reich with apocalypse as rapturous fans sing along with "Du Hast" or "Heirate Mich." My Apollo flash gel sample book came yesterday. So today I made a holder for it on my flash. Took a cereal box and made it cover my flash head with a slot to insert the gel. Works perfectly. If anyone's interested in diagrams for it just ask and I'll make some for it. I made it the size of my LP 120 so you could just alter the measurements for your own flashes.

Blue Fin (Explored)

Blurs happen. This was with my iPhone and had gone totally unnoticed by me. Once I found it there was something about the movement in this that caught my imagination. Downloaded in my computer, I then opened it in Camera Raw. I increased the temperature. Decreased the tint. Increased the following: exposure, recovery (31), blacks (to 75!), brightness just a bit, contrast, vibrance and saturation. Dropped clarity to -100. Then back in photoshop added a radial blur, onto the natural blur, to soften the edges before adding a stroke of 10, beveled, and dropping a black layer under it. The title was the hardest part!

To any of those unsure about whether one can shoot monochrome in RAW and then convert it to color later, here is a proof of concept:

Here is a painting my grandmother painted, shot in "monochrome" Picture Style (as set via the Menu with the camera icon and the number 2). This is how it looked on my camera's LCD, and this is how it looked when I downloaded it to my computer and opened it in Canon DPP (Digital Photo Professional). I didn't change a thing; I just did a "Convert and Save" to JPEG format and downsized it to 800 pixels on the longest side.

This is my 1st film camera. My dad gave her to me when I was in the 10th grade + that summer I took a photography class at a community college, followed by photography the following spring in high school. I went on to major in photography at college + haven't looked back since. It's a lifetime love.

BTW you could totally kill someone with this camera; it's SO heavy! They don't make cameras like they used to. This thing is so sturdy, it will get passed down to Maggie + probably my grand baby one day!

Three most important things to remember when taking any picture to make sure it's a good one: Theme (will someone looking understand what this means?), Attention (don't have accessive things drawing focus away from your main subject), Simplify (keep it nice and neat). I had other shots from this location with my 17-40mm f/4, but when I looked at the shots at home, all the light points were smeared - I must have put a big fingerprint on the lens. Still, I'm pretty happy with this one from the 24-105mm f/4. I hope you like it.

In July of 2004, I got a video camera. It was part birthday, part family investment, part my money. Regardless, I was going through that "I need to make movies and put them on any site that will host them!" phase (pre uTube, early beta google video). Made plenty of funny videos with friends (most involving the video game Halo), but as life moved on, I got tired and my interest moved toward other things. About two+ years ago, the camera function stopped working and since then my dad has been on my rear to get it fixed. Well apparently my parents (unknown to me until today) are going to Canada this fall and would like to use it. Good thin the City Advantage plan that $150 paid for is good till July 2009. Time to call circuit city...
