A Metroland Art Deco Villa in White - Coonans Hill

This cottage style villa with its decorative gabling, leadlight windows, white stucco work and picked out brown and red feature bricks in geometric patterns may be found in the Melbourne suburb of Coonans Hill.

Houses like this were popular amongst the newly moneyed middle-class who could finally afford to buy their own homes. Comfortable and cottage like in the Metroland style of interwar Art Deco architecture so popular in Australia during the late 1920s, this house and many others like it represented stability and respectability, without being showy.

This villa still features its original rounded planter box beneath the front room's bay window. The current owners have added an extra splash of colour to their neat cottage garden by filling the planter box with pretty primulas and petunias in candy box shades. The pomegranite tree in the front garden, judging by its size, was probably planted when the house was first built back in the 1920s.

Our bathroom is the one room in the new apartment where I feel we downgraded. Our old bathroom was bigger, and less pink. However, I do like the shower doors in this one, and of course smaller bathroom = less bathroom to clean. So... I'm not totally hating it.

Peridot, Pearls, and Leaves Chandelier Earrings

A color that I use often, if not too often, is green - all shades of it. This beautiful August birthstone, peridot, is splendid as a faceted glass round with an AB finish, making it sparkle!

Adding leaves to this pair of vintage-style chandeliers was an idea that was inspired by a recent camping trip of mine to Wekiwa Springs State Park, near Orlando, FL. There's something very natural and neat about these earrings.

The ear wires are silver plated as are the chandeliers and leaves, and the earrings meassure 3-3/4" from the top of the ear wire.

The Great American Tea Company, better known as A&P, was founded in 1859 by George Huntington Hartford and George Gilman, and renamed the Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company in 1969. Xtend-a-View Pro WIDE Sunshade and Viewer fitted to a Nikon Coolpix P5100 camera

I've missed quite a few photo-opportunities when digiscoping due to my inability to see the camera screen clearly enough to focus the scope through it, when the need arises. So I've finally got around (January 09) to buying myself the Xtend-a-View Pro(tm) WIDE Sunshade & Viewer which will hopefully sort the problem out.

The photos show the Xtend-a-View with velco strips attached (hoops), the Nikon Coolpix P5100 camera with velcro strips attached (loops), the Xtend-a-View in position on the camera, and the camera in position on the scope. With the viewer fitted most of the camera screen can still be seen and the function buttons can still be operated - although perhaps not with gloved hands. General details of the viewer and user comments (not all of which are favourable!) can be found via Google.

Note added 10 June 09: I've used the viewer for some months now, and here are my own thoughts:

I was initially a little disappointed, as I found that focusing the scope via the viewer (with or without the camera focus locked) as opposed to focusing the scope via the scope eyepiece and then fitting the camera and relying on the auto-focus - which is my usual modus operandi - did not generally produce sharper results. This conclusion was arrived at by carrying out a number of trials involving photographing static objects at a range of distances from the scope using both methods of focus. The results showed that either there was no noticeable difference, or the use of the viewer produced slightly poorer results. (This, of course, could just be due to my lack of proficiency in using the viewer.)

However, the reason I bought the viewer was to cover the situation when the camera auto-focus gets it badly wrong and throws a perfectly well focused image out of focus. In these circumstance the viewer can be an essential aid.

In fact I use the viewer almost all of the time now when in the field, but still generally focus the scope via the eyepiece, just using the viewer to check the framing and to get the timing of the shot right. It's proved to be of particular use when videoscoping, as the framing is clearly more important as this can't later be improved upon by cropping the image. Also I've found that the P5100 quite frequently throws the image out of focus when used in video mode, and the viewer can then be used to re-focus.

For all of its deficiencies, I now find the viewer to be an essential piece of kit, and wouldn't dream of going digiscoping without it.

Note added 13 May 11: Unfortunately I lost the viewer on 10th April 11 and wasn't able to source a replacement. However, I've found that an 8x magnification Hama loupe (with the transparent sides fully taped over) pressed to the camera screen is an effective replacement - at least from the point of view of achieving focus. In fact I find it much easier to use, especially at high scope magnifications. After a period of experimentation I eventually superglued the loupe to the screen. Since then I must have taken over 1000 digiscoped photos and videos, as well as a number of scenic shots using the camera in isolation, and have been very happy with the results (see photostream post 10 April 11).

However, this arrangement would probably not suit most people, as there are a number of disadvantages: the periphery of the camera screen cannot be seen via the loupe (although the critical camera settings can still be read); the image always appears pixillated, which, for example, makes it difficult to check photos for blown highlights; the camera screen could be damaged if the loupe eyepiece is exposed to the sunlight for any length of time (I use an old binocular eyepiece cover to prevent this).

A lower magnification loupe would probably be better, but I just used what I happened to have at the time.

BORRISHOOLE ABBEY (Ambrose Coleman, O.P.)
THIS, abbey is situated on the north-east shore of Clew Bay, about two miles from Newport, in the county Mayo. It was found- ed, under the invocation of the Blessed Virgin, by Richard Bourke, Lord Mac William Oughter, and head of the Bourkes of Turlough.
The founder gave the site in 1469 and embraced the religious state himself the same year. Shortly afterwards, the Dominicans took possession with the permission of the archbishop of Tuam, erected a temporary habitation and began cultivating the land. However, the foundation was irregular, as it was made without the sanction of the Holy See. Consequently a brief of foundation was obtained from Innocent VIII., dated February 19, 1496, which is given in full in the Hibernia Dominicana and from which we have drawn the above particulars. By this brief, the fathers obtained the usual permission to erect a church with a steeple and bell, and a convent with refectory, dormitory and all other necessary offices. The arch- bishop of Tuam, by the same brief, was empowered to grant them all absolution from the excommunication which they had unwittingly incurred by founding a convent without the approbation of the Holy See.

The abbey appears to have escaped formal dissolution in the sixteenth century, owing to its remote position, but in the time of James I., it was granted to John King, of Dublin. Its neighbour- hood was one of the scenes of the savage warfare carried on in 1580 by Sir Nicholas Maltby, during the Desmond war. It was probably at the time of his visit here that Sister Honor Burke, who lived for nearly a century with some other nuns, in a house which they had built near the old abbey, hid herself in the vaults of the church and had to remain there a week without food or drink. In 1653, on the occasion of the abbey being attacked and taken (See note 74), she with another sister fled to an island in the bay, to which the name of Island of Saints was given, whither they were followed by the English soldiers, stripped of their clothes and flung into a boat with such vio- lence that three of Honor Burke's ribs were broken. She was after- wards carried by her maid to the abbey aud placed in front of the altar of the Blessed Virgin. The maid then went to look for the other sister, who was hiding in a wood, and found her dead. On retuning to the church she was surprised to find Honor Burke also dead in .a kneeling posture before the altar, with her head perfectly erect. This was indeed the triumph of a martyr!

In the abbey is a tomb with the following inscription : "Orate pro anima Davidis Oge Kelly qui me fieri fecit sibi et heredibus suis Anno Domini 1623 et ejus uxori Anabla Barret."

In the Lords' Committee Returns of 1731, the following notice is taken of this community : " Another [friary] , in the parish of Burrishowle, whose number is said to be twenty, of whom five keep abroad in foreign parts and fifteen commonly disperse themselves about the country."

In 1756, there were five fathers here but only one in 1767. The last of the fathers connected with Borrishoole, Father Francis Burke, died between 1781 and 1785.

A great "pattern " used to be held here on St Dominic's Day.

THE FRIARS OF BURRISHOOLE (John O’Heyne, O.P.)
In County Mayo there is a fine abbey near the sea on river, called Burrishoole, founded by the O'Malley, formerly the chieftain of that territory. This foundation must have been made during the chieftainship of Cathal O’Connor, commonly called 0f the Red Hand; he began his rule in 1188 and died in 1224; but I do not know the actual year of foundation. This abbey, situated in a most beautiful and commodious locality, was established and endowed with many possessions by that chieftain, whose successor at the present ay, alas! does not own a single acre of land. That indeed is a frivolous assertion of the anonymous French author, who says that the abbey was founded by the family of the Butlers, for not one of that family, from the coming of the English into Ireland in 1172, obtained or had any establishment or possessions in Connaught by the time of James I., who gave the Marques of Ormond some territorial rights over the hereditary states of the O'Kelly. Charles II., restored in 1660, also gave the present Duke of Ormond many possessions in Connaught. So that besides the Irish records, the common traditions, handed down among the people welling around in the said territory, show that the house was founded, erected and endowed by the O’Malley, now despoiled of all his possessions.

I just read Barack Obama’s Latest Greatest Speech – his celebrated address on race, titled “A More Perfect Union” [1], yesterday (I am writing on the morning of March 19 2008), in Philadelphia. Sparked by recent broadcasts of his longtime pastor Jeremiah Wright’s angry denunciations of U.S. imperialism and racism, the speech changes nothing for me.

Deluded Obamanists can stop sending me e-mails saying (to quote one this morning) “wow he really knocked them dead in Philly telling it like it is on Race. Now will you please finally get on board with the Great Barack?”

As his most recent Grand Oration shows, the Chosen One is not about to sacrifice political ambition for the sake of truth and justice.

Yesterday’s address was all about Obama using his former pastor as a pretext for yet more triangulation [2]. Wright was employed as a foil for Obama to pose as reasonable on race and racism while he continued his project of deepening public confusion on racist and other United States oppression structures at the heart of American society.

And Obama ain’t “telling it like it is.”

FARMERS AND SCHOLARS WHO FLED EUROPE TO MAKE DEMOCRACY

Where to begin? How about the beginning, when he refers to Independence Hall across the street from the site of his address in the following terms:

”Two hundred and twenty one years ago, in a hall that still stands across the street, a group of men gathered and, with these simple words, launched America's improbable experiment in democracy. Farmers and scholars; statesmen and patriots who had traveled across an ocean to escape tyranny and persecution finally made real their declaration of independence at a Philadelphia convention that lasted through the spring of 1787. The document they produced was eventually signed but ultimately unfinished. It was stained by this nation's original sin of slavery…”

Sorry, but most of the people attending the Constitutional Convention had been born in British Colonial North America and had not “traveled across the ocean.” Some of their English and European ancestors had migrated to “escape tyranny and persecution” but a larger number likely came to advance their fortune or simply to make a living.

Many of the “farmers” at the Constitutional Convention were large-scale planters and slave-owners. They along with many other Founders were architects and beneficiaries of “tyranny and persecution” in the New World, much to the detriment of countless Native Americans, black slaves, indentured servants, landless laborers, and impressed soldiers and sailors.

The Constitution was an experiment in codifying the rule of the propertied elite, richly consistent with leading Founder John Jay’s statement that “the people who own the country ought to run the country.” “Democracy” was the last thing the framers wished to see break out in America; it was their ultimate nightmare, to be perfectly honest.

Accordingly, they built a carefully crafted system of republican rule designed to check and contain genuine popular governance – to keep the people at bay. We are still living with the terrible legacy of their masterful blueprint, which was stained by more than slavery. It was a great Thermidorian restraint on the democratic Hope of the American Revolution.

“IN NO OTHER COUNTRY ON EARTH”

Early in his Philadelphia speech Obama went into his standard soliloquy about how he comes from diverse racial and ethnocultural origins and how he has lived in a rich (the U.S) and a poor (Indonesia) nation and has gone to elite schools and then says, “I will never forget that in no other country on Earth is my story even possible. It's a story that hasn't made me the most conventional candidate.”

William Fitzsimmons is one of the oddest people you will ever meet. Born the youngest child of two blind parents, William was raised in the outskirts of the steel city of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Due to the family's inability to communicate through normal visual means, William's childhood home was filled with a myriad of sounds to replace what eyes could not see. The house was suffused with pianos, guitars, trombones, talking birds, classical records, family sing-a-longs, bedtime stories, and the bellowing of a pipe organ, which his father built into the house with his own hands.

When his father's orchestral records were not resonating through the walls, his mother would educate him on the folk stylings of James Taylor, Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, and Simon & Garfunkel. By the completion of his youth and schooling, Fitzsimmons had become well-versed at a variety of instruments, at the minor expense of social standing, interactional skills, and a knowledge of proper shaving technique.

Fitzsimmons' path into music was likewise unusual, forsaking the hobby for many years to work with the mentally ill and pursue an education in the field of mental health. It was during his last semester of graduate school that William pooled monies from past birthdays, holidays and snow shoveling outings and bought cheap home recording equipment to begin creating songs again (the first collection of which eventually became his debut album).

After finally achieving his goal of becoming a practicing therapist, William left, and returned again to his love of crafting and playing songs. He felt that is where he most belonged. Somewhere between a singing therapist and a counselor who writes songs is where Fitzsimmons endeavors to be, using songs to address matters that he believes need to be addressed.

William draws from the early folk of his mother's music and the embellished instrumentation of his father's. He is often compared to contemporaries Sufjan Stevens, Iron & Wine and the late Elliott Smith, not only for his unique style and skill in writing and proclivity to deal with substantive and evocative subject matter but also for his use of organic and colorful melodies and arrangements. While his lyricism deals often with darker undertones a measure of hopefulness is always carefully blended in.
