Rome

Rome

The Colosseum at night - Unlike earlier Greek theatres that were built into hillsides, the Colosseum is an entirely free-standing structure. It derives it's basic exterior and interior architecture from that of two Roman theatres back to back. It is elliptical in plan and is 189 meters (615 ft / 640 Roman feet) long, and 156 meters (510 ft / 528 Roman feet) wide, with a base area of 6 acres (24,000 m2). The height of the outer wall is 48 meters (157 ft / 165 Roman feet). The perimeter originally measured 545 meters (1,788 ft / 1,835 Roman feet). The central arena is an oval 87 m (287 ft) long and 55 m (180 ft) wide, surrounded by a wall 5 m (15 ft) high, above which rose tiers of seating.

The outer wall is estimated to have required over 100,000 cubic meters (131,000 cu yd) of travertine stone which were set without mortar held together by 300 tons of iron clamps. However, it has suffered extensive damage over the centuries, with large segments having collapsed following earthquakes. The north side of the perimeter wall is still standing; the distinctive triangular brick wedges at each end are modern additions, having been constructed in the early 19th century to shore up the wall. The remainder of the present-day exterior of the Colosseum is in fact the original interior wall.

The surviving part of the outer wall's monumental facade comprises three stories of superimposed arcades surmounted by a podium on which stands a tall attic, both of which are pierced by windows interspersed at regular intervals. The arcades are framed by half-columns of the Tuscan, Ionic, and Corinthian orders, while the attic is decorated with Corinthian pilasters. Each of the arches in the second and third-floor arcades framed statues, probably honoring divinities and other figures from Classical mythology.

Two hundred and forty mast corbels were positioned around the top of the attic. They originally supported a retractable awning, known as the velarium, that kept the sun and rain off spectators. This consisted of a canvas-covered, net-like structure made of ropes, with a hole in the center. It covered two-thirds of the arena, and sloped down towards the center to catch the wind and provide a breeze for the audience. Sailors, specially enlisted from the Roman naval headquarters at Misenum and housed in the nearby Castra Misenatium, were used to work the velarium.

The Colosseum's huge crowd capacity made it essential that the venue could be filled or evacuated quickly. It's architects adopted solutions very similar to those used in modern stadiums to deal with the same problem. The amphitheatre was ringed by eighty entrances at ground level, 76 of which were used by ordinary spectators. Each entrance and exit was numbered, as was each staircase. The northern main entrance was reserved for the Roman Emperor and his aides, whilst the other three axial entrances were most likely used by the elite. All four axial entrances were richly decorated with painted stucco reliefs, of which fragments survive. Many of the original outer entrances have disappeared with the collapse of the perimeter wall, but entrances XXIII to LIV still survive.

Spectators were given tickets in the form of numbered pottery shards, which directed them to the appropriate section and row. They accessed their seats via vomitoria (singular vomitorium), passageways that opened into a tier of seats from below or behind. These quickly dispersed people into their seats and, upon conclusion of the event or in an emergency evacuation, could permit their exit within only a few minutes. The name vomitoria derived from the Latin word for a rapid discharge, from which English derives the word vomit.

According to the Codex-Calendar of 354, the Colosseum could accommodate 87,000 people, although modern estimates put the figure at around 50,000. They were seated in a tiered arrangement that reflected the rigidly stratified nature of Roman society. Special boxes were provided at the north and south ends respectively for the Emperor and the Vestal Virgins, providing the best views of the arena. Flanking them at the same level was a broad platform or podium for the senatorial class, who were allowed to bring their own chairs. The names of some 5th century senators can still be seen carved into the stonework, presumably reserving areas for their use.

The tier above the senators, known as the maenianum primum, was occupied by the non-senatorial noble class or knights (equites). The next level up, the maenianum secundum, was originally reserved for ordinary Roman citizens (plebians) and was divided into two sections. The lower part (the immum) was for wealthy citizens, while the upper part (the summum) was for poor citizens. Specific sectors were provided for other social groups: for instance, boys with their tutors, soldiers on leave, foreign dignitaries, scribes, heralds, priests and so on. Stone (and later marble) seating was provided for the citizens and nobles, who presuma

NUMBER 69: Portobello Kings Road to Portobello Kings Road

NUMBER 69: Portobello Kings Road to Portobello Kings Road

Saturday September 27th 2008

Get on at Portobello King's Road, 2.37pm.
Before: concrete slabs have been taken up to expose a thin layer of dry earth beneath. Across the road cartoonish paint splashes on the windows of the old Scottish Power building, and a woman walks by with a labrador puppy, jumping and scratching. Board and there's two passengers already, an old man with a deerstalker. Down Portobello High Street, a strong wind on the green and white striped awning of a grocers. A girl's long hair being blown forward whilst she waits at a crossing. Under a pointed arch and past pink flowers and a lion-shaped door knocker polished to an extreme. People up front talk about the changing routes and one woman says "I haven't been to Princes Street for five months". The light beneath the distant clouds is wintery and suggests rain. And a refrigerator in someone's front garden, the door taped shut with brown packing tape. To Northfield, darkened council windows and satellite dishes pointing east. Two cold benches in a sad pub garden, overgrown grass and cars speeding by down Willowbrae Road. And then turn left climbing the side of Arthur's Seat. Houses with sea-views. More burning red leaves climbing the side of grey pebbledash. A pulley/flying fox in an Arthur's Seat park, but the actual wire no longer there, so just two wooden platforms, facing each other, twenty yards apart. A skylight in the bus ceiling, shows chimneys and lampposts flitting by in rhythm. And then a narrow road blocked by a parked pickup. The driver sounds his horn and a man comes out of a nearby house to move it. Return downhill. Stopped at lights a taxi driver makes a rollup from the tin of tobacco on his lap. A woman sprays weedkiller between the seams of her paved driveway. And then past a football match, a player in red and white hoops trying to lob the goalie but hits it too high. A billboard advertising ALCOHOL AWARENESS WEEK. And fast, skirting the traintracks. A railway yard with sleepers piled high, all rusted.
Inching back towards the roundabout.

Black Out Roman Shades

    roman shades
  • (Roman shade) A flat fabric shade that folds into neat horizontal pleats when raised.

  • (Roman Shade) This window treatment style consists of a fabric shade with wooden slats inserted horizontally at intervals down its entire length. It is raised and lowered via pull cord as with other blinds, but gathers soft folds as it does so.

  • (Roman Shade) A single sheet shade that rises up by lift cord in a tear drop or flat style that looks like an accordion folding up back and forth on itself. Reminds me of an opera house window treatment swag. Part of our Melhanna Shade collection.

    black out
  • Dark curtains put up in windows to cover lights during an air raid

  • A failure of electrical power supply

  • suppress by censorship as for political reasons; "parts of the newspaper article were blacked out"

  • A period when all lights must be turned out or covered to prevent them being seen by the enemy during an air raid

  • obliterate or extinguish; "Some life-forms were obliterated by the radiation, others survived"

  • darken completely; "The dining room blackened out"

Master Bedroom

Master Bedroom

If you stand in the doorway to the master bedroom, this is what you see. The windows will flank the bed and the door will lead to the wrap-around deck. Unseen to the right are the walk-in closet and, beside that, the master bathroom. This wall will be blue and the floor will be carpet. We'll be getting roman black-out shades (because Chad works midnights and these windows unfortunately face what will become a major stretch of road.

We went to Home Depot and bought a pair of Roman shades made out of bamboo. ('Cause we're all eco-friendly like that... heh.) When they are lowered, they filter a lot of the light from outside, but you can still see what's going on out there, if needed. The black curtains will remain (though always open) so we may close them and have total privacy if desired. The shades don't always have to be down, though...

"I Asked For A Room With A View" ~ Hilton Brighton Metropole

So excited to see if I had a lovely seaview, I rushed to my room only to see this!!

Thank you Hilton Metropole Brighton!! It reminded me of the scene from Fawlty Towers!

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Mrs Richards: And another thing – I asked for a room with a view.

Basil: (to himself) Deaf, mad and blind. This is the view as far as I can remember, madam. Yes, this is it.

Mrs Richards: When I pay for a view I expect something more interesting than that.

Basil: That is Torquay, Madam.

Mrs Richards: Well, it's not good enough.

Basil: Well ... may I ask what you were hoping to see out of a Torquay hotel bedroom window? Sydney Opera House perhaps? The Hanging Gardens of Babylon? Herds of wildebeeste sweeping majestically ... ?

Mrs Richards: Don't be silly. I expect to be able to see the sea.

Basil: You can see the sea. It's over there between the land and the sky

Mrs Richards: I'd need a telescope to see that.

Basil Fawlty: Well perhaps you should consider moving to a hotel closer to the sea. Or preferably in it.

Mrs Richards: Now listen to me; I'm not satisfied, but I have decided to stay here. However, I shall expect a reduction.

Basil: Why? Because Krakatoa's not erupting at the moment?

Mrs Richards: Because the room is cold, the bath is too small, the view is invisible and the radio doesn't work.

Basil: No, the radio works. You don't.
Mrs Richards: What?

Basil: I'll see if I can fix it, you scabby old bat.
[He turns the radio on to the limit.]

Basil: I think we got something then!

Mrs Richards: What!

Basil: I think we got something then!

Mrs Richards: What are you doing?

Manuel: Que?

Dangerous Intersection for Cyclists/ Peds...

Dangerous Intersection for Cyclists/ Peds...

SW Boones Ferry Rd and Martinazzi has had at least one bike/car crash (no injuries). And I've nearly been hit here 3X myself before I realized that it was the layout of the intersection that was the problem and not just a series of poor motorist's skills.

Here a cyclist is in the bike lane, and you can see how the pickup is sunken below the road level behind him in the opposite direction.

The problem is created by the upward slope of Martinazzi, the sunken grade of Boones Ferry Rd, and the posts that support the roof and windows of cars. The crosswalk signal (visible behind the cyclist), and peds are often in a blind spot for left turning traffic.

Some possible solutions:

Change the timing of the signal to allow peds a head start. (thus avoiding the conflict)
Relocate the crosswalk signal to the other side of the post (and/or raise it)
Add some kind of additional ped activated warning signal
Add a warning sign for left turning motorists
Close the crosswalk

Glass by Lawrence Lee, Coventry Cathedral

Glass by Lawrence Lee, Coventry Cathedral

Detail of the Golden Window, one of the final pair of nave windows representing the soul's final journey into Heaven. This window was designed by Lawrence Lee and represents the Heavenly City, studded with gemstones and with a large figure of Archangel Michael at the centre. At the base a shadowy Christ-like figure appears to welcome us.

Coventry's Cathedral is a unique synthesis of old a new, born of wartime suffering and forged in the spirit of postwar optimism, famous for it's history and for being the most radically modern of Anglican cathedrals. Two cathedral's stand side by side, the ruins of the medieval building, destroyed by incendiary bombs in 1940 and the bold new building designed by Basil Spence and opened in 1962.

It is a common misconception that Coventry lost it's first cathedral in the wartime blitz, but the bombs actually destroyed it's second; the original medieval cathedral was the monastic St Mary's, a large cruciform building believed to have been similar in appearance to Lichfield Cathedral (whose diocese it shared). Tragically it became the only English cathedral to be destroyed during the Reformation, after which it was quickly quarried away, leaving only scant fragments, but enough evidence survives to indicate it's rich decoration (some pieces displayed nearby in the Priory Visitors Centre). Foundations of it's apse were found during the building of the new cathedral in the 1950s, thus technically three cathedrals share the same site.

The mainly 15th century St Michael's parish church became the seat of the new diocese of Coventry in 1918, and being one of the largest parish churches in the country it was upgraded to cathedral status without structural changes (unlike most 'parish church' cathedrals created in the early 20th century). It lasted in this role a mere 22 years before being burned to the ground in the 1940 Coventry Blitz, leaving only the outer walls and the magnificent tapering tower and spire (the extensive arcades and clerestoreys collapsed completely in the fire, precipitated by the roof reinforcement girders, installed in the Victorian restoration, that buckled in the intense heat).

The determination to rebuild the cathedral in some form was born on the day of the bombing, however it wasn't until the mid 1950s that a competition was held and Sir Basil Spence's design was chosen. Spence had been so moved by experiencing the ruined church he resolved to retain it entirely to serve as a forecourt to the new church. He envisaged the two being linked by a glass screen wall so that the old church would be visible from within the new.

Built between 1957-62 at a right-angle to the ruins, the new cathedral attracted controversy for it's modern form, and yet some modernists argued that it didn't go far enough, afterall there are echoes of the gothic style in the great stone-mullioned windows of the nave and the net vaulting (actually a free-standing canopy) within. What is exceptional is the way art has been used as such an integral part of the building, a watershed moment, revolutionising the concept of religious art in Britain.

Spence employed some of the biggest names in contemporary art to contribute their vision to his; the exterior is adorned with Jacob Epstein's triumphant bronze figures of Archangel Michael (patron of the cathedral) vanquishing the Devil. At the entrance is the remarkable glass wall, engraved by John Hutton with strikingly stylised figures of saints and angels, and allowing the interior of the new to communicate with the ruin. Inside, the great tapestry of Christ in majesty surrounded by the evangelistic creatures, draws the eye beyond the high altar; it was designed by Graham Sutherland and was the largest tapestry ever made.

However one of the greatest features of Coventry is it's wealth of modern stained glass, something Spence resolved to include having witnessed the bleakness of Chartres Cathedral in wartime, when all it's stained glass had been removed. The first window encountered on entering is the enormous 'chess-board' baptistry window filled with stunning abstract glass by John Piper & Patrick Reyntiens, a symphony of glowing colour. The staggered nave walls are illuminated by ten narrow floor to ceiling windows filled with semi-abstract symbolic designs arranged in pairs of dominant colours (green, red, multi-coloured, purple/blue and gold) representing the souls journey to maturity, and revealed gradually as one approaches the altar. This amazing project was the work of three designers lead by master glass artist Lawrence Lee of the Royal College of Art along with Keith New and Geoffrey Clarke (each artist designed three of the windows individually and all collaborated on the last).

The cathedral still dazzles the visitor with the boldness of it's vision, but alas, half a century on, it was not a vision to be repeated and few of the churches and cathedrals built since can claim to have embraced the synthesis of art and arch

Glass by Geoffrey Clarke, Coventry Cathedral

Glass by Geoffrey Clarke, Coventry Cathedral

Detail of one of the fourth pair of nave windows, predominantly purple in colour and designed by Geoffrey Clarke. The dark purple/blue windows symbolise the soul reaching old age.

Easy Mead

Easy Mead

I kicked off another batch of mead this afternoon. We recently finished the 5 bottles that we made last March. The process is easy. Mix half gallon of water with three pounds of honey. Add 4 tsp acid blend and 3/4 tsp yeast nutrient. Wait one day then top off with 75F degree water and champagne yeast. In three weeks the fermentation is complete. The it is just a waiting game.

Pipe

Pipe

This pipe is very special.

I have been smoking a pipe for almost the last two decades. However, when I went to Iraq two years ago I forgot to bring one with me. So I wrote my sister and asked her to find a cheap pipe and some cheap tobacco and send them to me.

I should have known better. My sister went to a tobacconist near where she lived, related my story, and asked for advice in pipe buying. By the time she left, the tobacconist had provided her this beautiful Erik Nording pipe, a couple of pipe tools, a pack of pipe cleaners, and five of the shop's most popular tobaccos. And all that was charged was a discount price for the pipe.

This pipe symbolizes two things:

First, it symbolizes my sister never letting me settle and always making sure I'm taken care of.

Second, it symbolizes the people out there that support the military and are very generous to make sure we know their appreciation.

I am boundlessly grateful for both.

It is as large as our tv room and 1/2 of pool room (up to where the post is between our windows). Balcony is fairly deep- similar to ours on the side. Balcony has the bamboo curtains to keep put sun/cold wind. So you have glass (French doors) on front- and glass on back (sliding doors) walls and two solid side walls. The carpet has some tears in it (snagged by large furniture looks like) could be covered with throw rug.

My millennium man

My millennium man

31/12/09

Do you recognise these people? No, I'm not sure I do either. This was taken exactly 10 years ago today. In a pub (Gypsy Moth?) in Greenwich, on our first ever date. I can't remember who to give credit to for taking it. Carolyn possibly, Helen maybe, who knows, I was lucky enough to be with so many friends that night it could have been one of 20 people.

We had met at Boots and on his last day at my store, Simon plucked up the courage to ask for my phone number. We arranged to go to Brighton for the day on New Year's Eve. So he drove me down there in his soupy, diarrhoea coloured Peugeot 205, playing me mini disks (anyone remember them?) of 'sets' that Simon had DJ'd (snigger) and held my hand whilst we were on the pier looking at the ice skaters. In order to make him think I was a care free, cool, impulsive kinda gal, I made him paddle in the sea with me. It was fecking freezing.

We'd each got our own separate plans with mates for the evening but once he's seen midnight in on Blackfriars bridge, Simon made his way to Greenwich to meet me. Due to busy tubes and Greenwich town being entirely ticketed, he nearly didn't make it. It was all very 'Sliding Doors' - if he'd not made it he may well have gone back to Nottingham without a backward glance. But here's proof that he found me, and the rest is history.....

That was the best night of my life - I spent it with very dear friends watching fireworks outside the cutty sark. It was magical, not least because it was the start of things with 'im indoors.

We have had a brilliant decade together. I don't want to get too soppy here but I absolutely adore the man. He's not perfect (scruffy, blind to any laundry related issues of the house, has handwriting that would shame Edward Scissorhands, slightly too keen on wearing lycra to any sports related event) but he is perfect for me. I love you, Smelly.

Day 3 of Make Something Everyday.

Lately, instead of standard size business cards, I have been using mini-postcards to give to people and include in orders, etc. I already have a fabric card case for my standard size business cards, but didn't have anything pretty to carry my mini postcards in, so I made this.

It is just 2 rectangles folded in half and then sewn together. I finished it with a blind stitch. It holds a decent sized stack of about 25 -30 cards.

I Keep Waiting For The Wrong Things

I Keep Waiting For The Wrong Things

"the important thing about learning to wait, i feel sure, is to know exactly what it is i am waiting for." -Anna Neagle

It's understandable... right? I figure if i wait just a bit - inspiration will peek around the corner at me and it'll be: "of course! why didn't i think of that before??" or if i wait until this evening, i'll have time to really put something together and it'll be: "look at this! I'm gonna love this one!" or if i just wait till Monday, it'll be: "Ha! now i am really happenin' and i never wanna go to bed!" but then Monday becomes next Monday and i'm waiting for that spark and next Monday becomes next month and i'm waiting for genius and next month becomes... *sigh* and still i keep waiting.... and then i look up and suddenly i realize i'm embarrassed by it all... and so i wait to get un-embarrassed... and that, of course, is useless... if i could just come to an understanding and wait for the right thing... but really it's not even that - the only way for me to stop waiting is to start doing... sure.... that's what i tell myself....

But what do i know?

.

"If you are not too long, i will wait for you all my life." -Oscar Wilde

"Maybe i can afford to wait... maybe for me, there's a tomorrow. Maybe for me there's one thousand tomorrows, or three thousand, or ten - so much time i can bathe in it, roll around in it, let it slide like coins through my fingers. But then again, perhaps for me, there is only today. And the truth is, I will never really know..." -Lauren Oliver

.

.

.

(Hello my long lost flickrinos!

i took this image during our annual trek to eastern Washington and visit to Lake Chelan. It was a lazy afternoon and i told my lovely bride that i was going up to the Butte for an hour or so to get some shots with my suit and umbrella (it was 92 degrees and everyone was in little tiny swimsuits with spaghetti straps - i am especially fond of spaghetti straps - and there were even a few speedos in evidence, are they making a come-back? i have mixed feelings about that - but i digress...) Penny looked up and gave me her smile and her 'off-you-go-then' wave and said:

"So, I guess I'll see you in about four hours..." (am i so predictable?)

The road from our posh lake resort to Chelan Butte is a wonderfully dusty and rutted single-lane dirt track that winds and climbs up ravines and along dry grass and sage-covered ridges - the views of the lake and the surrounding mountains are well-worth the dirty car, scratched paint, and jittery nerves this primitive pathway always seems to demand. Today, not quite to roads' end, i turn off into the sage and stop, allowing the trailing dust cloud to catch up, add its small dose of grime, and then run ahead looking for a place to settle. From the back seat, i don my suit, my hat, and clutching umbrella, fake briefcase, and camera and tripod i step out into the heat and quiet and begin my walk. This year has been a bit wetter than usual and the grass seems higher and the grasshoppers more lively than times before (later, when i finally call it quits and remove my suit back at the resort, i find one of these little guys in the cuff of my trousers and another in the pocket of my suit coat - i have to admit the one in my pocket gave me quite a start when i reached in to retrieve my glasses - eek). But that's later, now i mostly hear the clicking and rattling as they make good their escape from my easy footsteps. As I sit and type, it is that sound and the smell of the sage that stands in my mind (when i'm out there, i can't walk past a sage bush without crushing a few of the leaves and breathing its fragrance on my fingers - sweet and earthy and i just can't get enough).

You know i got this thing about this damn suit and hat and umbrella and briefcase, right? It's fun to dress-up, it's fun to be places that seem at odds with this get-up, it makes me smile. Except this time, it is hot. The only thing that saves me as i climb up and down the little canyons of this lone mountain is the breeze and my umbrella - i now understand that the joys of parasols in the blazing sun are not to be trivialized. That little bit of shade hanging beneath my dear umbrella combined with the bit of wind swirling around this prominence is an unexpected relief. i was ready to be hot and sweaty and miserable but instead i am a bit warm and a bit sweaty but it is all very tolerable. So i set up the camera on my tripod and exercise the 10-second delay and run up and down the grassy hills crushing leaves and smelling my fingers (man oh man, if this is the true me - maybe i should be a hermit) and look at the result and smile and say "cool" or grimace and say "shit" and then repeat the whole thing as often as necessary. At the time, I didn't really have a concept in mind - i was just there to take in the place and

In the Shade~Explored

In the Shade~Explored

Looking toward the barn at Landis Arboretum, Esperance, NY. Textures- Picnik.

Decided to brave the heat today and head out for a drive. Having an awful heat wave here this week--can't take many more days this close to 100 degrees. All was fine in the car with the AC blasting. Stopped for gas miles from home and mistakenly locked the keys in the car. Phone, camera, purse, everything sitting on the front seat in the hot sun. Had a 45 minute wait for a locksmith and started to panic about what extreme heat could do to my 3 week old camera. So, I stood in the sun in front of the car window...hoping to provide some shade to the camera inside the car. Long, hot wait. Luckily, the camera was fine. After that...didn't feel much like staying out in the sun. Landis Arboretum is a lovely spot when in bloom. Think I'll wait to see it again 'till cool, breezy Autumn.
