My Underwater Rig

My Underwater Rig

Nikon D200 in Subal housing, Nikon 60mm macro/micro and port, two Nikon SB800s inside Fantasea FSB800 housings linked via an A/V optic fibre cable. The right-hand strobe (from behind the camera) was in master mode, the left-hand strobe was in remote/slave mode. The idea was that I get iTTL.

This trip was the first time that I used two strobes. My previous trip was to the Lembeh Straits (aka Macro Heaven) with one such strobe. I was getting very close to most subjects - almost exclusively with my 60mm macro lens. However, the shadows were sometimes a little off-putting and frankly 'brutal'.

The main problem I hit was strobe aiming - exacerbated by having only one arm on each side - definitely something I need to practice (on land first) - though I think, when I got it right (not very often) - we only did 6 dives - it worked extremely well. Lighting was very pleasing and the shadows - often a 'tell' in macro - were much reduced and aesthetically pleasing.

The images in this set are a bit dark - I think my laptop brightness was set too high when I was level-tweaking and I'll need to re-adjust and re-post sometime soon...
