White Shield/ Rite Aid - Ephrata
Cloister S.C., 108 N. Reading Rd; opened as the second of two Rea & Dericks in Ephrata. After the merger with CVS this store was divested to Rite Aid, becoming store # 4289.
This store was a great find; other than the 80s Rite Aid paint job (stripes of yellow, green, blue, and orange) it appears to have been untouched since the R&D days. The fixtures are very old, and tan colored (brown and tan was a color scheme used by Rea & Derick), but most notably the is in the front right corner of the store, with it's own exit (seen to the right)! The is only accessed through it's little alcove, and is boxed off from the rest of the store. The sign appears unchanged as well.
Also of note on the back door were blueprints for a new freestanding Rite Aid; apparently this store was planned to relocate at some point, but the plans were drawn back in 2007, so who knows when/if this will happen.
UPDATES 6/23/11: One, this store wasn't a Rea & Derick at all, but one of a chain of stores called White Shield. It was acquired by Rite Aid in 1989. Two, this store has closed as of August 2010.
Worthington White Shield
The back side label on the bottle of Worthington White Shield has the following to say about the beer:
Defiant survivor of 1820s IPA tradition, when only the most flavoursome beers endured the arduous voyage round the Cape of Good Hope. White Shield is the bottled live beer that matures with age.
Like fine cask beer, bottle conditioned White Shield boasts a small amount of William Worthington's feisty dual yeast, and will mature for at least 3 years.
To appreciate a sparkling clear glass of White Shield, the connoisseur pours with steady hand, leaving the precious last drops in the bottle.
