McDonald's McRib Sandwich

McDonald's McRib Sandwich

While out and about today after i voted i stopped in McDonald's in Plainville Ma for lunch.

I settled on the famous McRib Sandwich. I found it tasty and glad i tried it.

Info:

The McRib, the elusive sandwich that has inspired a cult-like following, is back.

McDonald's Corp. plans to announce Monday that the boneless barbecue pork sandwich that is not always available in stores will be sold at all U.S. locations through Nov. 14.

It's usually up to local franchises to determine when and if they want to sell the McRib, except in Germany, the only place where it's available perennially. But McDonald's said the response was so great last November when it made the McRib available nationally for about three weeks the first time it had done so since 1994 that it decided to bring it back this year. The company declined to give specific sales numbers.

The sandwich, which is dressed with onions, pickle slices and barbecue sauce, was introduced nationally in 1982. With 500 calories and 26 grams of fat, it's slightly trimmer than the Big Mac, which has 540 calories and 29 grams of fat. And just like the Big Mac, the McRib has become a popular McDonald's offering.

There are Facebook groups like "Bring Back the McRib!!!" There are Twitter tags, where posts range from "Lucky me, the McRib is back" to "If you eat McRibs, you need to re-evaluate what it is you actually want in life."

There's even the McRib Locator, a website where true believers can report McRib sightings, and even truer believers can take a road trip when one shows up within driving distance.

If the McRib is so popular, why not just offer it all the time? McDonald's likes to stoke the enthusiasm with an aura of transience.

"Bringing it back every so often adds to the excitement," said Marta Fearon, McDonald's U.S. marketing director, who added that she's not sure if the McRib will reappear in stores every fall.

And how can it be called a McRib if it doesn't have any bones? Said Fearon: "That gives it this quirky sense of humor."

31st Street's Closed OTB

This Off-Track-Betting space has been available to rent after the chain's recent closing. Real estate officials say the landlord was asking for up to $15,000 for this space and preferred to rent it to a franchise. Realtors say they are asking landlords to lower the rents in order for them to be able to rent them out to local businesses, but to no avail. This has already been rented to a franchise. More and more franchises are moving in. Most recently, hamburger fast food eateries have opened, in addition to a CVS, which sits right across the street from another CVS.

McDonald's Restaurant - Downey, CA (3rd Unit)

McDonald's Restaurant - Downey, CA (3rd Unit)

The 1953 McDonald's restaurant at 10207 Lakewood Blvd. (at Florence Ave.) was the third franchised McDonald's built and is the oldest surviving McDonald's. It was listed on the National Trust for Historic Preservation's 1994 list of the 11 Most Endangered Historic Places. It was one of the first restaurants franchised by Dick and Mac McDonald, prior to the involvement of Ray Kroc in the company, and it still has the original "Golden arches" and a 60-foot animated neon "Speedee" sign.

With low sales, damage from the 1994 Northridge earthquake, and the lack of a drive-up window and indoor seating, the restaurant was closed. However with both the public and preservationists demanding the restaurant be saved, McDonald's spent two years restoring the restaurant and reopened it. Customers today can visit the original restaurant and an adjoining gift shop and museum.

This is a McDonald's museum. Dedicated to the first McDonald's franshise which stood on this spot in Des Plaines, Illinois. The museum has been rebuilt as a replica of that first McDonalds Franchise.

I had to bracket several shots with my camera on the manual setting to finally get an exposure that was exposed enough, but did not over-expose with the neon lights. This one turned out the best.

Railways of America.

Railways of America.

Why is it that the impoverished and supposedly out-of-date railway system of America is so much more pleasant to use than our own? Ours is supposed to be a more modern system, isn't it? ...and more modern means better. After all, if something's more up-to-date it's bound to be an improvement, because history is progress and human life goes on getting better and better, doesn't it? I mean ...just look out of the window.
Constantly one is drawn to the conclusion that the modernisation of Britain's railway system was a fraud. It was all cosmetic ...a con-trick in which something nasty was disguised under a gimcrack, tuppenny-ha'penny, superficial appearance of modernity. Trains are shorter and have many fewer, more uncomfortable seats. If the trains are not actually overcrowded they are oppressively full. Places in these seats are, of course, much more expensive in both actual and relative terms than they used to be.
Out in the suburbs station buildings have been removed, leaving nothing standing above platform level. Even the roof of the footbridge will have been taken off to save a few pounds in maintenance costs. In the large stations all the furniture and fittings have been taken out and there is nowhere to sit down as you try to drink your paper cup of Coca-Cola and eat your 2.98 slice of pizza, limp from being reheated in a microwave oven. Never mind, you can go and get a glossy brochure from that young man in the suit standing next to the shiny new Hyundai Sonata that's on display by the Costa Coffee franchise ... by where the seats used to be.
This lovely burnished, beaten metal doorcase is at the exit from Newark Station, New Jersey. In England it would have been ripped out and scrapped sometime in the 1970s, to be replaced by plate-glass doors and a plactic "fascia" featuring the BR "coming and going" logo. In my (admittedly limited) experience of American railways I am always impressed by the extent to which the original structure and fittings of station buildings have been retained and looked after. The public concourse will be tawny with wooden panelling. Art deco lamps hang just over your head, suspended from the ceiling a hundred feet above. The ticket window has a beautiful polished timber frame. The lift ...sorry, elevator... is spacious, with old-fashioned folding doors. Public seating is supplied on a lavish scale, in long rows of high-backed, solid wood benches, like a small cinema auditorium. The trains are comfortable with seats like armchairs. Conductors, usually men of senior years, are solicitous and efficient. I have known two of them provided on a three-coach train.
Always I remind myself just how much I disapprove of all this old-fashioned, inefficient wastefulness and thank my lucky stars that I live in a country where we enjoy the advantage of an efficient modern railway.

The Kleeneze option
In today's society, a secure income - a job for life - may no longer be available from conventional employment. If you have suffered redundancy, and particularly if you are over 40, you may know how difficult this can be. Most people will admit to being dissatisfied with their level of income, especially in relation to the free time they enjoy.
The current trend of working from home, part-time working and job-sharing is an indication of how many people wish to escape the "employment trap".

As Prime Minister during the First World War, Sir Robert Borden made a significant contribution to Canada's nationhood. He argued successfully that Canada and other countries in the British Empire should be recognized as autonomous nations, both in command of their own troops and in treaty negotiations at the end of the war. In 1918, his government passed the Women's Franchise Act, giving all women the right to vote in federal elections.

Under their franchise agreement, Virgin Trains was required to purchase new locomotives to replace its elderly Class 47 locomotives. As a result, an order for sixteen Class 57/3 locomotives was placed with Brush Traction. They are employed as rescue locomotives (so called "Thunderbird" duties), and are used to drag Virgin Train's electric trains when engineering works force services to be diverted. They are also used to haul Crewe to Holyhead passenger trains.

Initially, twelve locomotives were ordered. However, this was increased to sixteen to allow the virtual elimination of Class 47 locomotives from stand-by duties. The first twelve locomotives were retro-fitted with special coupling adaptors to allow them to haul a Pendolino unit. The last four locomotives were fitted with the equipment from 'new'.

The Virgin fleet is painted in their red and silver livery, and locomotives are named after characters from the TV series Thunderbirds.

Martin Franchises, Inc., the parent company, is the largest dry cleaning franchise in the United States, with over 600 franchised stores worldwide. The family-owned company is based in Loveland, Ohio. The concept of One Hour Martinizing was pioneered by a New York chemist named Henry Martin in 1949.

At the time, drycleaning was done with flammable solvents, so the plants were located remotely from the storefronts. A customer would drop off their cleaning "in town", the garments would travel to the production facility to be cleaned and pressed, then they would return to the store several days later for pick-up. But, by using a non-flammable solvent, the use of which was discovered by Mr. Martin, drycleaning plants could now be located much more conveniently, and the process could be carried out in a much more timely manner. The use of this non-flammable solvent was adopted throughout the industry and revolutionized the business in that facilities could better serve their customers and provide much faster turn-around on the orders, if need be. Operationally this has been termed "on-site cleaning" (as opposed to the "remote" cleaning of the past)."

Prior to the 2009-10 NHL season, the Blackhawks made another major free agent purchase, signing Marian Hossa to a 12-year contract worth 62.8 million dollars.[29] In addition to Hossa, the team also acquired Tomas Kopecky, John Madden, and Richard Petiot.[29][30] In early July, general manager Dale Tallon and the Blackhawks management came under fire when the National Hockey League Players' Association (NHLPA) claimed the team did not submit offers to their restricted free agents before the deadline.[31] In the worst case scenario, the team's unsigned restricted free agents at the time, including Calder Memorial Trophy finalist Kris Versteeg, would have become unrestricted free agents.[31] Despite the ordeal, the Blackhawks were able to sign Versteeg and all of their restricted free agents before the NHLPA could take further actions.[31] On July 14, 2009, The Blackhawks demoted Tallon to the position of Senior Adviser. Stan Bowman, son of Scotty Bowman, was promoted to general manager.[32]

The Blackhawks resigned Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews to contract extensions worth $31.5 million over 5 years, and Duncan Keith to a 13 year extension worth $72 million on December 1, 2009. On April 6, 2010, the Hawks won their 50th game of the 2009-10 season against the Dallas Stars, setting a new franchise record for wins in a season. The very next night, April 7,the Hawks notched their 109th point of the season against the St. Louis Blues, setting another franchise record.

The Blackhawks made the playoffs for the second consecutive season with a regular season record of 52-22-8. They defeated the Nashville Predators in six games in the first round, before defeating the third seeded Canucks for the second straight year, again in six games. The Blackhawks then played the top-seeded San Jose Sharks in the Western Conference Finals and won the series in four games. The Blackhawks advanced to the Stanley Cup Finals for the first time since 1992. They faced the Philadelphia Flyers, and were able to win the series in Game 6 with Patrick Kane scoring the game-winning (and Cup-clinching) goal in overtime. It was the Blackhawks' first Cup win since 1961.

The Excel is an excellent venue for watching hockey. Minnesota is known as the hockey capitol of the U.S. and we do a pretty darn good job of showing it with our high school, college, and pro hockey teams. The Minnesota Wild are basically a replacement franchise for the North Stars which moved to Dallas in the early 1990's. At least I got to see my Penguins win the cup here before the Stars moved away. Interestingly, the old Met Center, where the Stars used to play, is now the parking lot for the Mall of America.

By the way, J.S. Giguere had the worst game of his career and was actually pulled. The defining moment of the game was when he ducked to let in a 3rd goal. For one of the NHL's best, this was a shocking outcome.

Pride of Ownership

Pride of Ownership

I wasn't wearing an Aloha shirt and sandals-with-socks, but I did have a Big-Ass SLR (tm), and thus we were both instantly identified as folks who Aren't From Around These Parts. "So what brings you here?" the owner asked.

It was a question that I didn't particularly want to answer. We had a fascinating response sitting right in our holsters, of course. But when you say "We're trying to visit ten diners in one day" you run the enormous risk of being mis-identified as a Colossal Diner Bore or a Roadside America Big Bag O'Gas.

Look, here's why I like diners: they nail the compulsories. Stereotypically, they're not interested in making you a short stack of pancakes cooked with artesian-style whole grains on a stone-floured hardwood-fired grill, served with a kiwi/loganberry compote and the Penguin edition of "Boswell's London Journal." No, they want to serve you the most perfect stack of ordinary pancakes you've ever eaten. Ditto for a BLT, a club sandwich, or a slice of apple pie. Diners are all about simple food done exactly right. Plus, you can usually get in and out of there for less than seven dollars, the staff is almost always genuinely friendly, and unlike TGI Bennihoogans franchises, if God chose to amuse Himself by teleporting you from one diner to another, you'd realize the differences almost immediately.

(Ihnatko stands up, buttons and smooths his shirt, adjusts his glasses, and then proceeds, after clearing his throat and then taking a preparatory breath.)

I do not visit diners out of a sense of nostalgia. "Remember the Fifties?" says the bag-o-gas. "The tailfins on the cars! Elvis on the jukebox! An ice-cold Coke cost five cents, and a red-haired waitress named 'Betty' served you hamburgers at your favorite corner diner." This sort of blatherol is usually oozed out by some stuffed product of the hair-care industry, usually wearing rented bluejeans and a wry, thoughful grin that had to be applied surgically, introducing some sort of show on the White Guy Channel. Either that, or it's a lead-in to a pitch for some sort of adult-incontinence product. Whenever I hear this stuff, I can taste copper.

Oh, and another thing: I do believe that in principle, you should give your consumer dollars to locally-owned business whenever possible. But when I walk into a diner, I do not, repeat, do not smugly pat myself on the back for sticking it to...hang on, there's got to be a website somewhere with exactly the sort of phrase I'm looking for...ah! "The vampiritic Wal*Mart death-spiral of multinatural corporate America and its relentless and savage ongoing assault on Main Street businesses."

I swear to God: I'm just there for the grilled chicken club and a Coke. Diners get my money through the wholesome, old-fashioned method of providing a fantastic product at a low price. If I learn later that everything in my favorite diner, from the parsley sprigs to the busted jukeboxes on the tables, were built and supplied by the Halliburton Corporation, it wouldn't dent my enthusiasm one jot.

I close this harangue by stressing that if you like diners or buildings from the 1930's that are shaped like animals, and you like them for what they are, not for how you think you're supposed to feel about them, then you are clearly neither a Colossal Diner Bore nor a Roadside America Big Bag O'Gas. You are welcome to join me on my next roadtrip.

But back to our narrative. I was a bit timid about being mistaken for some bastard in an RV who had read about the Riverside in "Reader's Digest" or something. Also, it was probably a dicey thing to assume that anybody else would find this whole Diner Decathalon story interesting.

("But what about us?" you ask, dear reader. Well, you're reading this on the Internet, and thus have waived any right to be entertained and/or informed. Onward.)

"We're driving two hours to Connecticut just to meet a friend for breakfast," I lied. "She's been going on and on about this diner she likes, and we thought we'd stop here on the way in case the food sucks."

Gloriously, this was exactly the opening that the proprietor needed to pull out the photo albums: IE, any opening whatsoever,

Oh, yes, I forgot: another great thing about diners is that there's often an intense and cheerful pride of ownership. He showed us photos of the first diner he ever owned, and a diner book where it got featured attention...and a few years ago, they shot a movie with Dustin Hoffman and Dennis Franz here!

So instead of making a quick whistle-stop out of the Riverside, we stayed there rather longer than we imagined, looking at pictures and hearing stories. The Riverside was actually the Times Square Diner before the film company came along and upgraded the entire outside for the cameras. The big new neon sign was a thousandfold improvement over the old one so he decided to just keep the sign and l

Soft Boiled Chicken Egg. Found this in 7-Eleven.

7-Eleven, nicknamed "Little 7" (Chat Jai) by the local, has operated in Hong Kong since 1981 under the ownership of Dairy Farm. With most locations being in urbanized areas, approximately 40 percent are franchised stores. In September 2004, Dairy Farm acquired Daily Stop, a convenience store chain located mainly in the territory's MTR stations, and converted them to 7-Eleven stores immediately upon takeover. As of 2009, it has 950 stores and made it a second place for the highest density of 7-Eleven stores after Macau, with 1 shop per each 1.16 km.
