Wizard Of Gore
Is it magic? Or slaughter? Montag the Magnificent (Ray Sager), The Wizard of Gore, is a seedy small time magician with a shocking stage act. Hypnotizing pretty young women from the audience to be his obedient volunteers, Montag then proceeds to mutilate them in a series of Grand Guignol illusions. A woman is cut in half with a chainsaw, another is drilled through the stomach with a giant punch press, a metal spike is driven through one gal's head, and two ladies are forced to swallow swords. Trouble is, after the show, the "illusions" become all too horribly real. Blood, guts, and offbeat surrealism in another crackpot classick from "The Wizard of Gore" himself, director Herschell Gordon Lewis.
Wizard Island
Wizard Island was created after Mount Mazama, a large stratovolcano, erupted violently approximately 7,700 years ago, forming the caldera which now contains Crater Lake. Following the cataclysmic caldera-forming eruption, which left a hole about 4,000 feet (1,200 m) deep where the mountain had once stood, a series of smaller eruptions over the next several hundred years formed several cinder cones on the caldera floor. The highest of these cones, the only one to rise above the current lake level, is Wizard Island, which rises over 2,700 feet (820 m) above the lowest point on the caldera floor and the deepest point in the lake.

192/365 Parts is Parts
How much do you think this is worth? $500, $125 or $35? The answer is...all of the above.
This part was a source of a $500 car repair back on Day 158 for L'il Red. When my dummy light went on and the car wouldn't start, I knew I was in big trouble and probably was looking at an expensive car repair bill. My normal mechanic couldn't take me for several days, so I had the car towed to a different shop. After a day and half, they finally called and found this part was the source of my problem. See that little fray on the cable? That is what cost me $500. The place where I got it fixed called and asked me if I had my timing belt replaced recently. Well, recently (as in last year) I did...apparently when it was replaced some cover wasn't shut tight and its taken about a year to fray (fry!) this cable. I asked them to save the part and when I saw it, my immediate thought was this thing cost $125?
I was ticked off that I had to pay $500 for something that wasn't my fault, I determined I would never go back to the mechanic again, I was going to go storming into the shop and demand they remedy the situation and reimburse me, I was going to make them look bad in front of all their customers. Yes, I was mad! But, I was also going out of town and decided I would deal with it when I got back from all my trips as I didn't want to be mad and ruin my trip.
Yesterday, I had finally calmed down enough (it's been almost a month since it happened) and there was no reason to be rude and make a scene, so I just called and asked to speak to the manager. He said to bring the bill and part in and that he would see what he could do, so I did. When I got there, he went to talk to the guys out in the shop and was out there for awhile, so my thought was that they were going to claim innocence. I was already thinking up a comeback, they should at least pay for part of it, pay for the labor, pay for the part, etc. But, he agreed to reimburse me, for the whole repair, and apologized profusely. I asked what he was talking about to the guys for so long...apparently, they were looking up the part cost and the other shop charged me $125 for the cable, they said their cost was $35 and that they would have charged me about $200 less for the repair under normal circumstances. Although in this case, I wouldn't have been charged since it was their fault (although I seriously wonder if that would have happened) In other words, without saying it directly, I was way over-charged.
In my prior job, I used to support our parts business and had to resolve customer complaints about our high parts prices (I was the one who set prices!). Our inside joke was "Parts is parts", you need to repair your product, so you pay to get it fixed no matter what the cost, to our benefit as our parts business is VERY profitable and for most parts, we are the only source for the part.
As the old saying goes, "Turnabout is fair play." This time I was on the other end of the deal, I paid the price to have my car fixed. It was also a lesson for me that it was probably good to give myself some time to calm down. I know when I was on the other end of it at work, I'd be less inclined to comp repairs for customers who were rude. I'm just glad my regular mechanic made me whole again! :-) And, I also know where I am NOT going to ever take my car again for repairs....

Old One Eye - Dall Ram.
There is quite a story behind this picture. No pictures this weekend. I was about 50 miles south of Anchorage early Saturday morning and got rear ended by a big Ford truck that lost control on a icy patch. Hit hard enough to cause my Subaru to skid clear across the road and end up in the bottom of the ditch facing back the way I came. Long story. Taking my SUV in this morning for repairs.
I had been photographing this ram for quite some time. I believe he lost his eye in fight with another ram. The day I took this photo I grabbed a little digital Fuji FinePixs camera instead of my heavy film camera. I was just getting into digital photography at the time. The climb was pretty slippery and icy. I decided to take a short cut. Not a real good idea. I came to this area where the sheep trail runs up next to the cliff face. Cliff on my left, 200 foot drop off on the right. The trail was about 18 inches wide and sloped slightly down hill. I had crossed it quite a few times before, but, never when it was covered with ice and snow. It was only about 12 feet to the other side where the trail was wide and safe. I stood there for 20 minutes trying to figure out a safe way across. Only way I could see was to just go for it and hope that I didn't slip. I said a few prayers and in about 3-4 quick steps was across. Pretty dumb, I know. But really didn't want to climb back down and go the long way. I was quickly losing my morning light. Anyway, I went on up and saw Old One Eye standing on this snow covered ridge. WOW! so beautiful! He let me work in fairly close and get about 20 shots of him. Then he turned and left. I was really kicking myself for not taking my Canon EOS, but, the shots still look pretty good, even though they are only about 6 mega pixels. Oh! yeah! I took the long way down. ;-) No use tempting fate twice in one day. This shot probably means more to me then all of thousands of other Dall Sheep photos I have ever taken.

Actually, he wasn't sure how to repair it, so he just opened and closed the body.

Shuttle Craft Model in Studio with Blue Screen
This shot shows the space and distant view filming model of the shuttle craft in front of the blue screen in the studio. This model was lit and the internal lighting can be seen in the back.
The vast majority of the images in my photostream are digital scans and restorations of original 35mm film clip frames in my possession - this is not, it is made from a duplicate slide, therefore a photographic copy of a film frame, made sometime in the 1970s. It is in its original color, I have not colorized the shot, but it clearly lacks some sharpness of an original clip and does not provide full detail. The original film scratches are also copied into the duplicate and in many cases difficult to remove without changing the actual image.
I felt that the view of the shuttle, on its blue pole stand in the studio was of such interest historically I have scanned and restored this duplicate image. The image quality is marginal but the scale and set up of this model in the studio make it interesting.
Blue Screen
Oh, the joys of Windows.
What makes this particular blue screen so special is that there's absolutely nothing to describe the problem. The only potentially useful morsel of information is the memory location where the error occurred (Hex info) and even that isn't particularly useful.

A Peek Inside: VW Bus Dashboard 1
Love to see what folks have on their dashboards, here in an old VW bus. It's like a "Where's Waldo" treasure hunt to see what a person collects. The large view shows various collectible items from travels along the old Route 66. I notice that there is a fake snake there. My brother swears by having a fake snake in the dash, just on the chance it could startle and deter a potential thief. Love the toys, stickers and bumper stickers shown here. And the crop to show the word "Live" was intentional. This is Bob Waldmire's Volkswagen van, seen in Portal, AZ.
Dashboard Overload
I can stomach the 7MB of real memory.
I can't stomach 1.4GB of swap space. No friggin' wonder paging between apps takes minutes sometimes.

DanPhoto Flickr 2008-07-05 17-36-54 Master Bedroom Remodel May 2008 DSC0226
Maybe a little unconventional, but I used a 1/2" sheet of wallboard and a 1/4" sheet of wallboard to build up to the necessary thickness to match my plaster walls. This was a bit tricky but it ended up working out very nicely. The walls in my house have a good heavy plaster setting over a sort of very thin 1/4" drywall sheet. The thickness is in excess of 1" in some areas.
Bedroom Remodel. Ever since moving in, I hated the old rose wallpaper. So finally... I tore a hole in the wall.. installed electrical, cut through the exterior masonry, installed an air conditioner, stripped the wallpaper, repaired the wall throughout the room, painted, installed new window blinds... and made my wife very happy.

Trial fit. This is still before I started knocking even more bits and pieces of the plaster wall out of there. Oh well... "It is as easy to fix a big hole as it is to fix a small hole."

The pairing of imagery and color captures the essence of a utility cooperative and its focus on democratic membership and cost-based rates.

As the cistern is boxed and tiled-in, access was tricky. All fixed now.

Garth - The Cobbler
Garth is the local cobbler in Cooma, the one and only shoe repairer in the district. As well as fixing your everyday pair of shoes or boots, he can repair any kind of leather item. Before becoming a cobbler, Garth worked as a shearer, a driver instructor, and sold life insurance and Kirby vacuum cleaners – “you name it, I’ve had a go at it” he says with a glint in his eye.
At the age of 26, his girlfriend was browsing the jobs vacant in the Canberra Times, when she came upon an ad for someone to work in a Shoe Repair Shop in Belconnen Mall. “Stinking shoes, who would want to do that?” But having a keen interest in making leather goods, it took his eye. So, loaded up with some leather saddle bags which he had made for his Harley, he strode into the shop, and applied. And as they say, “the rest is history”.
Compared to everything else he has done, he says, “it’s a picnic. I just call it something I do, but it’s not work”, he says with a chuckle. I mentioned the smelly shoes that customers bring in, and he said “you just become immune to that, besides, there’s lots of nice glue to smell all day, you get a bit high, it’s lovely”.
Schuster Andreas Helldobler from Bayer. Landsturm Infanterie Bataillon 'Landshut', May 1917
Letter on front and reverse (see next picture) dated 19.5.17. Admin stamp from Bayer. Landst. Inf. Batl. Landshut I.B.7. - 2.Masch.Gew.Komp. and postage cancelled a day later on 20.5.17.
A great picture of Bavarian Landsturm Schuster or cobbler / leather worker in the field. Discernible items for repair are boots and shoes, belts, a bayonet frog, rifle sling and ammunition pouches.

Target 11 Investigation - Hazelwood Street Collapse
These folks got some air time during an investigaton of a road collapse in Hazelwood. Guy Costa, a Pittsburgh public works spokesman, claimed the city was unable do repair the street because the documentation on who owned the street was destroyed years ago.
So the people on this street can just watch as their street falls in to adjacent railroad tracks.
The reporter failed to respond to Costa by not saying , "documentation destroyed, how does that happen" or "who do you THINK owns the road" What kind of investigation is it when they do not even ask questions? Or is it better to show depresed looking people for visual impact.
So what is a "Target 11 investigation" anyway?
Thanks Karen Wells, it was not really an investigation. Thanks for not challanging Mr Costa in any possible way. Sure it was nice that he came to the scene for an interview, but for God's sake have the 'nads ASK him a question. The city puts salt on the street but they do not do repairs. There was a missed opening to go a bit deeper.
It was a report, not an investigation.
By the way I missed this, the girl in the back stuck her tongue out at the camera during this shot and they allowed it to be shown. How degrading is that? That proves that using outrageous images are important to the production of the news.

The Story:
IS PLASTIC LIFE DEAD?
I have 2 Hard Drives to save all my work, all my photos, and of course all my Plastic Life set. They work in "RAID", copying all the time the same files.
It was supposed to be a safe way to save my files.
But, November 12 2010, my 2 hard drives crashed down. I still don't know how it happened. They didn"t come up on my different computers. everything was off.
I had to put them out from their boxes to bring them to some repair shop. I did it, and i brought these 2 strange naked machins to some shop in Paris. They couldn't fixe it.
Then i realised that in these 2 metal and green plastic hard drives that i was holding in my hands, was stucked all Plastic Life, all the past of my little characters. All their real life was fucked inside these 2 machines.
Me, i couldn't do anything else to save their past... so i thought... "maybe THEY can do something... maybe my little people can try to save themselves, they own past, their own history, their own real life!"
So, during one all week-end, i have shot them, my tiny characters, living on my hard drives, working on them, doing their best...
Here is their new story... trying to answer to that question: IS PLASTIC LIFE DEAD?
