It's a 1/20 scale Mattel Hot Wheels "Dropstars" model car with a forced perspective effect done by putting the camera directly on the road about a foot or so in front of the car.

It was a very cold day for March when I took this photo, so I only was able to take a couple of shots of the car on the road before I wanted to run back inside.

1950 Kenworth Log Truck

This truck has an articulating trailer with a carriage swivel both front and back. The trailer hitch is on an extended on a boom halfway between the front set of dual tandems and the rear ones. This geometry causes the trailer to steer itself around the sharp curves of mountain back roads and logging spurs where normal semi trailers with a "fifth wheel" would cut off the inside of the curve into the ditch.

The Sweetwater River

It is said that pioneers coined the orginal description of the Platte River above the Missouri River "Too thin to plow. Too thick to drink".

They must have loved following the Sweetwater River up to the edge of the South Pass crossing of the Continental Divide. It led them along past Independence Rock and Devil's Gate - - along the way. This is looking west upriver, where Wyoming highway 28 crosses the Sweetwater River. Notice the bright willow along the shoreline.

Those of you who have read my profile or know my inclinations, know that I love to read the history of an area; go see it; then read more about what I have seen when I return.

In some places, I get the feeling I can actually hear and see the historic events that have taken place as I gaze at unchanged landscapes. It is a very precious thing for me to visit places - - where "history " was made and happened.

So it is with South Pass in Wyoming. I have been here many times and learn something new each time, but I always enjoy the large scale landscape of the area and to sit and watch where so many amazing people passed and so much American history took place.

South Pass is a high, but broad wide passage across the Continental Divide. You can clearly see where pioneers walked, rode horses, pulled hand carts or steered their oxen pulled wagons.

There are cement markers at the crossing and little else. The markers list the four major "trails" or "routes" that used this passage:

Oregon Trail from 1848 - 1868 (As early as 1836 Narcissa Whitman and Eliza Spalding became the first pioneer women to cross the South Pass route).

California Trail from 1841- 1869 (Missouri to California route used heavily during the 1849 gold rush in California). Last year I visited the City of Rocks in Idaho, where those, who were successful, passed through that area on the same California Trail.

Mormon Trail from 1846 - 1857 (The route the LDS took to Salt Lake City - - many pulling hand carts - - two groups hit by winter conditions near Casper, Wyoming lost many in their party).

The Pony Express from 1860 to 1861 (It didn't last long but what a romantic notion of lone riders barreling across this wide open prairie at gallop speed - - a trail of dust behind them. They carried mail in relay from Missouri to California - - in just ten days).

I drove my four wheel drive pickup truck down near the low point of the pass, then took my camera and walked. I sat on boulders and gazed down in all directions across the sweet smelling sage. I had the whole place to myself (except for a herd of pronghorn antelope). Not another person or vehicle in sight for miles.

What a wonderful experience. I could see them all in my mind, as they passed east to west across the terrain. Each with their own dreams, their own mission, and all with much determination. A good place to visit.

The photographs in this set were taken on a two week “road trip” through 11 Western states. My principal destinations planned for this road trip were: Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming; Nine Mile Canyon petroglyphs in Utah; Two hikes to cliff dwellings at Road Canyon in the Cedar Mesa country of Utah; Great Sand Dunes National Park in Colorado; a visit to an Aunt in Texas and with my Mother in Kansas; Oregon Trail wagon ruts near Guernsey, Wyoming and finally Devils Tower in N.E. Wyoming.

I was able to see and do all of those things and much, much more with excellent weather almost the entire trip. It was a fun and memorable road trip. I hope you all will enjoy some of the photographs I took along the way. I spent every night but one in the back of my pickup truck (screened windows, reading lights & full comfortable mattress). My old Colorado “Alp” three pound prime goose down sleeping bag came in handy on several nights, when temperatures were below freezing.

My principal destinations planned for this road trip were: Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming; Nine Mile Canyon petroglyphs in Utah; Two hikes to cliff dwellings at Road Canyon in the Cedar Mesa country of Utah; Great Sand Dunes National Park in Colorado; a visit to an Aunt in Texas and with my Mother in Kansas; Oregon Trail wagon ruts near Guernsey, Wyoming and finally Devils Tower in N.E. Wyoming.

I was able to see and do all of those things and much, much more with excellent weather almost the entire trip. It was a fun and memorable road trip. I hope you all will enjoy some of the photographs I took along the way. I spent every night but one in the back of my pickup truck (screened windows, reading lights & full comfortable mattress). My old Colorado “Alp” three pound prime goose down sleeping bag came in handy on several nights, when temperatures were below freezing.

As with any album by the band, it's hard not to imagine parades and a sky filled with helium balloons while you listen to any of it--in this case, the party is enhanced brilliantly by digital filters and silver shimmering asides. The most immediate songs, like "One More Robot (3000-21)," are digital (almost trip-hop) dance numbers that lift the band out of the cornfields and into the loopy land of Bjork. Little surprise, then, that the band are already following up this majestic splash of gummy bear brilliance by recording a CD with kids' TV show host Steve from Blue's Clues. A water wheel is a machine for converting the energy of free-flowing or falling water into useful forms of power. A water wheel consists of a large wooden or metal wheel, with a number of blades or buckets arranged on the outside rim forming the driving surface.

Old Mill of Guilford

In 1767, before the colonists decided to seek independence from England, Daniel Dillon built a small tub mill in North Carolina on Beaver Creek, and went into business grinding grain for the early settlers. The Earl of Granville had granted Dillon the tract of 552 acres on Reedy Fork and Beaver Creeks in 1755. Rowan County later granted him a license to build the mill in 1764. Rowan County court minutes from January 10, 1764 read: "Ordered that Daniel Dillin have License to Build a Publick Grist Mill on the Reedy Fork of Haw River at the mouth of Beaver Creek." The mill was located in what is now Guilford County, which was created out of Rowan County in 1771.
On February 10, 1781, during the Revolutionary War, British troops under General Cornwallis marched past the mill in pursuit of General Green who was encamped at Guilford Courthouse. Legend has it that British troops seized the mill to grind grain for the soldiers prior to the Battle of Guilford Courthouse on March 15, 1781.

The original tub mill and dwelling on 175 acres was sold to Joel Sanders for $900 in 1808. In 1819, Sanders moved the mill 500 feet down stream and built a new dam across the creek, which increased the millpond to 10 acres. The new mill was designed as a merchant corn and wheat mill with an overshot wheel to replace the small tub mill.

In 1913, the mill was purchased by K. L. Hendrix who later converted the mill to a roller mill and replaced the water wheel with a turbine. In 1932, state highway 68 was built between the dam and the mill. To keep the mill in operation, the long overhead wooden flume, which carried water from the dam to the mill, was replaced by a 26" diameter steel pipe which ran under the new road. Clarence E. Bailes purchased the mill in 1954. Bailes removed the roller mill machinery and replaced the turbine with a 24’ x 4’ Fitz overshot water wheel which still operates today.

In 1977, the mill was sold to the current owners who continue to operate the mill on a full-time basis.

Vintage Grist Mill

The Glade Creek Grist Mill was restored in 1976 at Babcock. Fully operable, this mill was built as a re-creation of one which once ground grain on Glade Creek long before Babcock became a state park. Known as Cooper's Mill, it stood on the present location of the park's administration building parking lot.

Of special interest, the mill was created by combining parts and pieces from three mills which once dotted the state. The basic structure of the mill came from the Stoney Creek Grist Mill which dates back to 1890. It was dismantled and moved piece by piece to Babcock from a spot near Campbelltown in Pocahontas County. After an accidental fire destroyed the Spring Run Grist Mill near Petersburg, Grant County, only the overshot water wheel could be salvaged. Other parts for the mill came from the Onego Grist Mill near Seneca Rocks in Pendleton County.

A living monument to the over 500 mills which thrived in West Virginia at the turn of the century, the Glade Creek Grist Mill provides freshly ground cornmeal and buckwheat flour which park guests may purchase. Visitors to the mill may journey back to the time when grinding grain by a rushing stream was a way of life, and the groaning mill wheel was music to the miller's ear.

Things that may be needed:

*New brake levers; the current ones I have (Shimano BL-M700) are ancient. While lovely, they don't have adjustable throw or a return spring. I'm looking at a set of newer Shimano BL-M732's. Still nice, big, 4-finger models, (Last Shimano made, actually), but with a return spring and reach adjust. Got some Avid Speed Dial Ti's.
*~~Re-arrange the cassette; the chainline is a little suspect to the low gears, so I may remove a gear and just install some spacers on the wheel-side.~~ Done. I ended up changing up the cassette tonight anyway; went from a 24-21-18-16-14-12 to a 24-21-18-15-12. The chainline from the small chainring to the small cog looks much more acceptable now. Later, I switched back over to 6-speed spacing from the 8-speed spacers I had between the cogs previously

The standard B.M.W Plastic/Carbon guard can be used just need a short piece of 15mm O.D by 25mm long stainless steel bar and drill a 5mm hole through it
i tried a 10mm 20mm and 35mm spacer to see what looked best but thought the 25mm long one looked neater

First ride-on experiment

1st July 2006 saw me trying out the pulling capacity of locomotive No.1, which is driven by two 150w 12v motors via chains to the 4" diameter wheels. A 75ah 12v GEL golf buggy battery provides the power. An edited version of this photo appeared in the 2nd issue of Miniature Railway magazine.

Path through junipers El Morro

El Morro doesn't open until 9 am, so Ed and I planned it to arrive as close as possible to that hour. We were one of the first visitors to enter the visitors' center that day and start down the nicely designed paved paths, leading to the waterhole and to the inscriptions.

We also took an interesting hike up to the top of the mesa. Ice on the trail, close a portion of the hike, so it couldn't be done as a loop.

Rain and snow melt feed a small waterhole at the base of a cliff. For thousands of years it was the only reliable water for over 30 miles in any directions. The cliffs served as a landmark making the waterhole easy to locate. The original waterhole has been enlarged a bit over time by those who depended upon it, but it is still dwarfed by the towering cliffs that shade it and keep it from evaporating in the summer heat.

The waterhole is along the natural route between the Acoma and Zuni Pueblos. Anasazi built masonry dwellings and kivas on top the El Morro sandstone mesa and added their petroglyphs to the rock faces of the cliffs near the waterhole. These cliff faces would record the passing of many interesting, famous, and widely varied travelers.

The oldest “non-Native American” inscription was left by Don Juan de Onate in 1605. Lots of the Spanish conquistadores left their message here and “paso por aqui” or “pasamos por aqui” (I or we passed by way of here in Spanish), is a common message carved in the cliffs. Ramon Garcia Jurado carved a message on the cliffs in 1709 just 30 years after the Pueblo Revolt, where the Pueblo people united and drove the Spaniards out of their homeland (temporarily).

Among the Native American bighorn sheep petroglyphs and Spanish “paso por aqui” messages a poet left a poem in 1629 cut in stone. Then came Americans and the U.S. Army. Lt. J.H. Simpson left a crisp inscription here in 1849. Then the somewhat bizarre: in 1859 the U.S. Army experimented with the use of camels for desert travel in the American Southwest.

The camels were bought in Egypt; trained in Texas; and led by Lt. Edward Beale (He was originally in the U.S. Navy!) with a fellow named Breckenridge, in charge of the camels. They stopped by at El Morro twice, both in 1857 and in 1859 when they carved their names in the cliffs.

By the time the civil war began, the U.S. Army gave up the idea of camels and most were sold or turned loose. There are many strange stories of those travelers who ran across “wild camels” in the Southwest in subsequent years, many of whom must have given up whatever brand of whisky they may have been drinking at the time.

The stories with a link to El Morro, go on and on, and make interesting reading. A visit to El Morro brings many of the stories much more to life. It was a good stop and excellent hike. Ice had closed a portion of the loop trail, so Ed and I hiked to the end of the trail and the back tracked up to the top of the mesa to hike the other portion.

This would be an interesting day of travel on this road trip but not a particularly good day for photographs. In fact, there is only one photograph that I took the entire day that I’m proud of. The rest do little more than share a story of road trip travels and preserve good memories.

After a now customary big breakfast at Denny’s, we left Grants, New Mexico for El Morro National Monument. El Morro had perhaps the most interesting history of any place we visited on this road trip. There are few “knock out” photos to be had here but hiking along the inscriptions panel on the face of the cliffs; the water pool that “made” the place; or up across the top of the cliffs where there are kivas and masonry ruins and views for hundreds of miles - - certainly made this a great place to stop and visit.

Leaving El Morro, we drove to the Zuni Pueblo. I got my favorite photograph of the day of a young Zuni girl clutching her precious puppy, she said she had named “angel”. Zuni Pueblo though, is one of two places we visited on this road trip that I would not highly recommend. The pueblo itself is so run down it is a bit depressing, even though all the Zuni people we met were friendly, helpful, and wonderful people.

The women working the official Zuni crafts outlet store will never make a living working on sales commission but in their own unhurried way, they went about life. I bought a jet bear fetish here with an inlaid turquoise rain cloud. A card came with it telling of the Zuni craftsman, who created it. It is something I will long treasure, though a return trip to Zuni Pueblo will never be high on my list. The church at Zuni Pueblo, like most else there is in bad need of some care.

One of the many guide books I had with me said that highway 13 coming in from the Northeast of Canyon de Chelly was scenic, so Ed and I plotted a route to Chinle, Arizona that would take us north up highway 491 from Gallup, New Mexico, then over the mountains on highway 1

I don't know Captain Orton's history but I bet it is interesting. He likely saw action in the Civil War and went west on assignments in 1866. Something brought him to El Morro and he left his message for those who would follow.
