EVAPORATIVE COOLER FILTERS : ICE CHEST AIR CONDITIONER.
Evaporative Cooler Filters
- a cooling system that cools by evaporation
- An evaporative cooler (also swamp cooler, desert cooler, and wet air cooler) is a device that cools air through the simple evaporation of water.
- (Evaporative coolers) (also called swamp, desert, or air coolers) are devices that cool air through the simple evaporation of water. They differ from refrigeration or absorption air conditioning, which use the vapor-compression or absorption refrigeration cycles.
- A porous device for removing impurities or solid particles from a liquid or gas passed through it
- A screen, plate, or layer of a substance that absorbs light or other radiation or selectively absorbs some of its components
- A device for suppressing electrical or sound waves of frequencies not required
- (filter) an electrical device that alters the frequency spectrum of signals passing through it
- (filter) device that removes something from whatever passes through it
- (filter) remove by passing through a filter; "filter out the impurities"

This is one of five photos of mine that are in the current issue of the quarterly employee magazine, CenterVision, at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center where I work. This one was used to illustrate a story about the various ways the Hutchinson Center has incorporated "green" practices to use less resources. The center has been repeatedly recognized as a leader in resource conservation in Seattle.
Pictured is Jim Walker, one of our facilities engineers, with some of the giant fans that cool water used in the air conditioning of the center's largest building. These evaporative cooling towers save 530,000 gallons of water annually. To get this shot, Jim and I climbed a vertical ladder to reach the tower top. I positioned him between the spinning fans and used a slow shutter speed to show the fam motion and his hair and shirt being blown by the air and a breeze coming off the lake. I thought this came out well in B&W.
In the comments I posted a few screenshots of the magazine showing how this image and a couple of others were used.
Some other conservation factoids:
- Food waste is composed, diverting 8.5 tons of food from landfills every year.
- All of the Center's recycling programs keep 500 tons of material out of landfills annually.
- Energy-saving projects save a combined 17 million kilowatts and $1 million annually in electricity use.

Right: water sprayers
No refrigeration is used. All of the cooling is done using outside air and/or evaporative cooling.
