266: But in time we all forgot and we all grew Sunday, April 10, 2011 Song of the day: Panic at the Disco "Folkin' Around" Look at how wrinkly my hands are- I never knew! I have three tattoos total and two are seen in this photo. The other is a little blue star on the top of my foot. What can I say? I like tattoos on my limbs. Here's the story of the two on my wrists: The three hearts represent my immediate family- mom, dad, brother Tony. I got it on a family trip to the tattoo parlor which has become a tradition. My mom also got three hearts tattooed on her wrist for our family. The tattoo on my right wrist says "Bucurie" and I also got this one during a family trip to the parlor. It means 'joy' in Romanian- peasant Romanian. My gram is 100% Romanian and swears she's a Gypsy. Mine and my mom's middle name is Joy. I dunno, put those two facts together and bam- you got this tattoo. My gram was excited that I wanted a tattoo in Romanian because at the time she felt that "no one in the family admits they're Romanian" and that "no one cares." Ironically, the Romanian in me has always been the most interesting and intriguing. I love it when my Grandma shares stories about Romanian culture and defends Gypsies and talks about secret love affairs. Her first language was Romanian and she was even held back from kindergarten for a year because she didn't speak English well enough. Some funny bits of info about these tattoos, which makes the permanence of tattoos that much more apparent, is that they aren't facing the same direction. The hearts are facing me and the word is facing away from me. I guess the "correct" way is to have it facing away from you so that you can "present" it to others. Luckily, I like things a little whacky so the fact that they are opposite is perfect for me. Today was a great Sunday. I woke up at a decent time, got coffee drunk while watching music vids and cleaned. Then went grocery shopping, painted a new pot for one of my cacti, cleaned Fiona's (my betta) home, etc. etc. etc. I predict a relatively chill rest of my Sunday which will comprise of watching tele and trying to finish my &@*^#*(@YHD(*@# mime stop-motion video. 99 days, 99 days!! So excited. "99 red balloons go by" An old friend Today saw someone talking about watches on a web forum, and I was inspired to record this image of the Seiko I have been wearing on my wrist since I bought it in a Spokane, WA, department store in 1989. Clean, simple, reliable, not expensive but not cheap either (I think it was around $80 in 1989, equivalent to about $140 today). Hopefully it will be the last watch I ever have to buy. Every couple of years I take it into this little watch repair shop on Newport Blvd in Costa Mesa and the European guy there gets all excited (he likes Seikos) and replaces the battery and crystal and cleans it up for $5. "That's a good watch," he says as he hands it back to me, every time. Yes, that's a drawing on an AR-15 receiver in the background. New Order can be funny! After the game, as we waited for the cruelty-free shepherd's pie to heat up in the oven, we watched our New Order music video compilation DVD. Um, have you seen "Touched by the Hand of God?" Another bizarre coincidence - when I announced that I was making vegetarian shepherd's pie, it turned out that Ian had made one over the weekend (with blue potatoes and tempeh)! He brought over his leftovers, of course. The food was sooo tasty that we gobbled it all up and forgot to take photos! Red Shoes After a year of anticipation, today was finally our trip to the US Open! We were afraid of what kinds of cameras might not be allowed on the grounds, so Pookie and I just brought our Ricohs with us. Not being able to focus on photography meant we weren't distracted from the awesomeness of the day. The US Open is almost indescribably cool, the way you can get right up close with the top tennis players in the world, or you can engage in top-notch people-watching, or you can sit in an enormous stadium watching one of the biggest sporting events of the year in a big crowd. For our second match of the day, we settled in on the front row of the low bleachers at Court 14 for some mens doubles. The match was intense and awesome (they hit the balls directly at each other!), and we were cheering for the dude in the bright red shoes. His team won handily, but even after examining head shots on the US Open website we're still not sure who these feet belonged to. --Schn. You Have Charles and Fred - 22 years together - from 11th September 1984... and still going strong. The lyrics to the Marc Almond song "You Have", the single of which (10 inch version) I bought this day 22 years ago. Oh you have the saddest eyes That I have ever seen Secret sorrows of a heart That breaks so easily Don't let me catch you crying Don't let me catch you crying Watching through the pane of glass The final silent scenes You became a fading face In morning's half forgotten dream Don't let me catch you crying Just hear the sad breeze sighing You have You have You have the first ice of winter I have the first rain of summer You have the sad signs of sorrow I have to leave you tomorrow Words on a torn piece of paper Escape from the window forever Memories don't seem to matter When crushed under heel in the gutter Oh you have the saddest eyes That I have ever seen Secret sorrows of a heart That breaks so easily Don't let me catch you crying Just hear the sad breeze sighing You have You have I wander out along the rain washed streets Blinded with tears And kicking cans Wrecked and wild With an ever-crushing loneliness Feverish and tousled With an ever-crushing love I know I won't find any answers here I know my pleading voice bounds back an echo It ricochets back down the cavernous alley Hey don't be a stranger Sad how misguided and confused We suffer inside Stumbling from one shaky stepping stone To another Reaching out for a blind, blind love Reaching out for a blind, blind love Small we fall easy prey to self-pity Wishing I was with you on the other side Maybe tomorrow I'll join you in Paradise Maybe tomorrow I'll join you in Paradise Adidas by Fossil Model # ADH1334 N O U! ! ! Kevin Smith Emerges Kevin Smith emerging on stage at the Centre for Performing Arts in Vancouver, B.C., March 27, 2009. I wasn't going to post this one because of the lousy quality, but what the hell. It's more about the story and the emotion than the quality of the image--a sentiment I think Kevin Smith and his fans can relate to. I only just recently re-discovered Smith's work thanks to the urging of a friend of mine, and have caught up with the movies. I'm glad I did it and had the presence of mind to go see Smith speak. It was a great show. I was an early but short-lived fan of Smith's. I remember back when I first saw Clerks on videotape in 1994 and how excited I was that my generation finally had a real auteur in film, not just a director or a writer or a comedian--but a filmmaker, someone like David Lynch or George Lucas. Not just someone taking on the singular task of directing or writing or editing someone else's material, but someone who creates an entire world and a cast of characters out of whole cloth and sees the entire project through, making not just a film, but a very personal piece of art. (That's why I still say even the worst Kevin Smith movie is still a better bet than half of the movies out there.) I remember the first time I watched Clerks. My wife and I had friends over and we were all laughing our asses off. At one point, I had to hit the pause button on the VCR, right after Dante shouts, "And try not to suck any dicks on your way through the parking lot." The group of people we were watching with could not stop laughing (including me) and we couldn't hear the film so I paused it until we got ourselves under control. I was an instant Kevin Smith fan after that, and remained that way for a very shot time. The end came when I saw the poster for Mallrats. It was so slick and commercial... and so fucking dreadful, looking like something shat out of Hollywood's ass. I remember feeling a sense of disappointment and thinking how much the film looked like your run-of-the-mill Hollywood crapfests a la Porkies. It gave off the vibe that Smith had sold out and gone Hollywood. I decided I'd rather not see this new film and have it spoil my image of the guy who made that perfect little gem of a film called Clerks. And so I didn't see Mallrats. Nor did I see Chasing Amy, Dogma, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. I just lost interest. And then there came news of Clerks II. I remember hearing about that and thinking, "Oh god, please don't. Don't ruin it. Clerks was so perfect and self-contained and needed no further expansion." I had no intention to see this film and felt a little disappointed by the news. Until a colleague of mine talked me into watching it (not coincidentally, the same friend who went with me last night to the show.) He loaned me the DVD and it sat on my desk at home for quite a while before I finally watched it. I was unexpectedly blown away by it. My expectations were very low, I admit, but the film changed my entire view of Smith, made me realize how utterly wrong I was to have assumed he had gone all Hollywood. Since then, I've gone back and devoured everything I could get my hands on. All his films, his "Evening With" DVDs and, most importantly, Zack and Miri Make a Porno which I view as his best film to date. At the show, he touched on that briefly, talked about how all the industry buzz about the film wasn't enough to save it from a disjointed and confusing marketing campaign. I felt sympathetic for him while he was explaining it, but really not that bad. He's spent a good deal of his career slightly off the public's radar. Zack and Miri is no different really. The fact that he manages to create excellent movies, even in semi-obscurity, is remarkable. For me, being one of the few to see and appreciate the film, it feels a little like 1994, when I was one of the few to be in on this great flick called Clerks. Smith alluded to the fact that he's working on a new project and no longer with his old company, Miramax (partly due to the mishandling of Zack and Miri.) That means, I think, he's probably going to go a little Hollywood, and this time, for real. I don't say that to imply that he's selling out either. I think it more likely that Hollywood is finally catching up to him. And unlike last time, I will be along for the ride. MAYA PATTERN (rorschach version) Hello to all fans of the Dark Knight of Parasomatic Brain Shrinking on Flickr! Tennis champion Maria Sharapova visiting children in Belarus1 Tennis star Sharapova visits UNDP youth projects in Belarus Gomel, Belarus 30 June - Tennis champion Maria Sharapova arrived here today to visit children living in areas affected by the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster and to see for herself the work of a number of UNDP youth-focused projects that her Foundation has helped fund. As soon as she landed, Sharapova went to the town of Chechersk and visited the hospital’s “Fairy Tale Room” which provides treatment to the children in the form of interactive games and psychotherapeutic sessions. She then visited UNDP’s “Ecology of the Soul” project at the Local Arts Centre and spoke to children involved in raising awareness on environmental issues. The project, funded by the Maria Sharapova Foundation, works with youth to spruce up public spaces, clean springs, make bird feeders and plant bushes. Needless to say, she was a big hit with the children, all of whom wanted to pose next to her and have their photos taken. “I am so glad to be able to see these inspiring children and the wonderful projects that my Foundation and UNDP have been supporting for the past two years“, said the tennis star. “They are definitely a good example of how local communities can overcome the ‘victim syndrome’, take greater control over their lives and build productive futures for themselves.” Tomorrow, Sharapova will visit the Gomel Oblast Tennis Centre and will meet with the 2010 winners of a five-year Maria Sharapova Foundation Scholarship for Youth from the Chernobyl-Affected Areas of Belarus. The scholarship aims to assist talented students gain access to high-quality education in the leading universities of the country. The scholarship program was launched in September 2008 as a joint initiative between the Maria Sharapova Foundation and UNDP, where Sharapova serves as a Goodwill Ambassador. In partnership with UNDP, the Sharapova Foundation supports seven youth-oriented projects in areas of Belarus, the Russian Federation, and Ukraine affected by the Chernobyl accident. Sharapova was born in 1987 in Nyagan, Siberia, after her family fled Gomel in the wake of the Chernobyl accident. After two years in Nyagan, the family moved to the Black Sea town of Sochi, Russia. In 1995 Sharapova left Russia to study tennis in the United States. In 2004 she won her first Grand Slam title at Wimbledon and was named Women’s Tennis Association player of the year. In 2006 she won the U.S. Open and, in 2008, the Australian Open. Today: First Week of School is Over... asdfghjkl So, like the title says, the first week of school has just finished for me. So I wanted to tell you somethings about it. (Mostly, this is going to be about a boy, so.... yeah) Well, first off, they screwed up my schedule. They gave me classes that I never asked for, AT ALL. So I'm trying to get my schedule fix so that I can have chorus. But I just realized a lot of my friends dropped chorus. IDK why though, chorus was so damn easy. The only reason I think some of them took it was to get an easy A. That's stupid because the only reason I'm taking it is because I love singing and because I want to get better at it. Now jsyk, the four classes they gave me that I didn't ask for are Focus Food, Beg. Web Design, Photoshop 1, and Psych. I'm in two of those classes right now. Focus Food is stupid to me because in it they try to teach you to be healthier with your food. I don't really care to do that. I mean, I know I should be watching my weight, but I don't need a teacher telling me that. I already have my doctor, people in general, the media and myself saying this. Adding someone else will make me go crazy. And Beg. Web Design is actually nice. The teacher is really funny and he seems like a nice guy. If it comes down to it, this is the only class I would like to keep. One of the main reasons I even made this is because there is some boy news in my life. Nothing good and nothing bad, just... there. So, yall remember Mark? The boy that was in my spanish class and used to call me his girlfriend? Well, I have TWO classes with him. Spanish and American History. They are right after each other. And on the first day of school, I was sitting in spanish and he comes in five minutes late. He goes to sit where the teacher was, but then he looks towards me, says "Babe!" and sits next to me. Now since he is such a kiss ass to the teacher, he's not allow to move from his seat. So he stuck sitting next to me. Now the thing is, he still calls me his gf. I'm okay with that but I would ACTUALLY like to be his gf, like for real. And two of his friends sit behind us. During the week, his friends would make comments about us. Like one of them asked how far we've gone. Legitimately, Mark says "Oh, we've fucked." And then his friends goes on to ask if I was good in bed. Like WTF? Dude, I was right there. *And for the record, even if me and Mark we're dating, I wouldn't fuck him. Not unless we like dated for YEARS, and I loved him. And neither of them are true. And then later in the week, Dan (who is the one who asked if I was good in bed) said "You know, you two should just really go out. You would make a cute couple. DUDE THAT'S WHAT I'VE BEEN TRYING TO SAY! XD Anyway, then Mark said we are dating, but of course we aren't. Then the boy that was next to Dan, who is John, asked me while Mark was right there, if I liked Mark. I said it was none of his concern. That whole situation got awkward for me because I didn't know what to say because I if I said I did, his friends would probably tell people, and because, MARK WAS RIGHT THERE! Like even if he found out I liked him, what would he do about? Because IDK if he even likes me. He could just be teasing me and not being serious. But I know he isn't like this with any other girls, I'm the only one he calls babe and the only one that he calls his gf. Ugh, this boy will be the death of me. Oh, side note, I went and saw Joe Jonas in concert. He was really good and really sexy. The whole night was fun but it felt like Joe wasn't one stage that long. Jay Sean seemed longer. Also, there was no chairs. I was up in the balcony. Also, once Joe came out, someone was smoking pot xD Anyway, thanks for reading all this if you did. Comment's are lovely.
