  • (gate valve) A type of valve in which the closing element (gate) is a disc that moves across the stream, often in a groove or slot for support against pressure.

  • (Gate valve) A valve with a circular-shaped closing element that fits securely over an opening through which water flows. A valve that utilizes a disc moving at a right angle to the flow to regulate the rate of flow. When a gate valve is fully opened, there is no obstruction to the flow.

  • A valve with a sliding part that controls the extent of the aperture

  • (Gate valve) A gate valve, also known as a sluice valve, is a valve that opens by lifting a round or rectangular gate/wedge out of the path of the fluid.

  • gearing: wheelwork consisting of a connected set of rotating gears by which force is transmitted or motion or torque is changed; "the fool got his tie caught in the geartrain"

  • One of a set of toothed wheels that work together to alter the relation between the speed of a driving mechanism (such as the engine of a vehicle or the crank of a bicycle) and the speed of the driven parts (the wheels)

  • set the level or character of; "She pitched her speech to the teenagers in the audience"

  • a toothed wheel that engages another toothed mechanism in order to change the speed or direction of transmitted motion
