The history of the beautiful spa town that grew from a tiny village is portrayed with more than 200 photographs and supporting captions in this new book. Following on from Jacquline Cameron's successful book on Leamington Spa, this study explores the town's history with particular emphasis on leisure and entertainment. The books features a wonderful selection of images, many of which have never been by the public before. Jeff Watkin uses fascinating archive pictures from the Art Gallery and Museum at The Royal Pump Rooms to show what life was really like years ago.

Leamington Spa, properly Royal Leamington Spa, commonly Leamington or "Leam" to locals, is a spa town in central Warwickshire, England.
Until the beginning of the 1800s, Leamington was a village named Leamington Priors.
In 1814 the Royal Pump Rooms and Baths were opened close to the River Leam. This grand structure attracted many visitors, hoping to soothe various aches, pains and ailments by bathing in pools filled with the salty spa water. It also included the world's first gravity fed piped hot water system in modern times, which was designed and installed by the engineer William Murdoch. Leamington soon became a popular spa resort which attracted the wealthy and famous, and construction began of numerous Georgian townhouses to accommodate visitors.
Leamington's reputation soon spread. The town gained its "Royal" prefix in 1838, granted by Queen Victoria, who visited the town as a Princess in 1830 and as Queen in 1858, and whose statue still stands in the town.

This book reproduces more than 200 fascinating photgrpahs of the Warwickshire town of Royal Leamington Spa, featuring the buildings and the inhabitants at work and leisure, and also a section that looks at a number of other towns and villages in the locality. Many of these illustrations, which have been acquired from a wide variety of sources, have never been published before. The Royal in the town's name originates from a visit on 3rd August 1830 by Princess Victoria with her mother, the Duchess of Kent. In honour of the occasion, the town was permitted to add Royal to Leamington Spa and it has remained a proud tradition of the town ever since. Later in the decade, when Victoria had became Queen, she rested a Regent Hotel on her way to Warwick Castle. Some of Leamington's most interesting history originates from the famous Pump Rooms that have been renovated in 1999 and now house the library, museum, art gallery and Leamington Visitor Information Centre, Renowned for its Victorian painted stucco villas and beautiful Regency houses, much of the charm oft he nineteenth-century architecture can still be found in and around Leamington Spa today, This captivating collection of images will provoke memories if the local history of Royal Leamington Spa and inspire a new generation to be interested in local history.
