Harlan Motors

Harlan Motors

Harlan Ford, Lincoln, Mercury
Downtown Okmulgee, OK

You don't see a lot of these great old dealerships still downtown, still showcasing cars in the streetside showroom. The horrible blue awning should really get the tornado treatment though.

There's another one down the street, Bailey Motors (a Chrysler/Dodge dealer), but I'll get that shot some other time. The Chevy dealer has a modern location north of town on the highway, but remnants of its original location remain west of this Ford dealership. I was reading about Okmulgee's history, and they had (and still have) many great architectural and historic specimens from the turn of the century oil boom. The town once had more millionaires per capita than any other city in the nation, including New York, perhaps because it was so close to Tulsa and the discovery of oil drew everyone down the road quickly. The town existed for a long time before that, as the capital of the Creek/Muscogee Nation. When the oil dried up, so did the town, however, and lots of it are falling into disrepair, and despite the great old houses and structures having a lot of character, they look ready to collapse into themselves. It's a pretty depressing sight, if you ask me.

Charlie gets her way

Charlie gets her way

Last year I bought an IKEA floor lamp that is essentially a tall rectangular tube of paper that lights up.

I was confident that Toby and Fiddy would be mature enough to leave it alone, even though they could easily tear it apart. At the time I wasn't expecting any younger cats in the home.

For the last few months it has been a struggle to keep Chariie and KK away from the light. They made a hole near the bottom. I wrapped some cardboard around the bottom and it looked okay and formed a barrier. Eventually they pulled the cardboard off.

I just recently accepted that the young cats have won the battle, and I can't stop them from wanting to claw their way inside. I've put away the electric parts and the lamp shade is now a cat toy.

I think this is the start of getting some new ideas about interesting set-ups for shooting cats that brings out fun cat behaviour in good lighting.

It was a hot foggy day in Atlanta, and the vet said to take Addy to the pet store to get an e-collar. So we stepped into Petco. Addy decided she was going to eat some birds and nothing was going to distract her. She was singing at the top of her lungs in the doorway. It is like she knew what was instore. After a 30 min battle we were out with the worst idea Addy had ever heard of. Secretly, she began plotting for revenge. Stay tunned for the conclusion...

My Zorki-4 35mm Rangefinder, Type 1b (1957) and Some Soviet Lens History

My Zorki-4 35mm Rangefinder, Type 1b (1957) and Some Soviet Lens History

An original Soviet Leica-type copy, serial no. 5770570; a cold war classic. Bought this one in A1 condition (for a 52year-old) from a guy called Viktar in Minsk, Belarus - came complete with original cardboard box, yellow filter and cap. I love it. The Zorki-4 features the renowned Jupiter-8 50mm / f2 coated lens (serial no. 5751570) in M39 x 26tpi Leica Screw-Mount (LSM) ; optics are a direct copy of the pre-war Carl Zeiss 50mm / f2 Sonnar lens.
The Zorki-4 is entirely mechanical, having a focal plane curtain shutter (professional 1/1000s to 1s + B) and a natty clockwork self-timer. 1m - 20m - INF focus range with DOF indicator.
It features a very accurate (when correctly calibrated) 'double-image' coupled rangefinder combined into the large viewfinder via a rotating prism. This was an improvement upon the contemporary Leica which had separate and smaller VF and RF. The original-fit Jupiter-8 takes 40.5 x 0.5mm threaded filters / hood with a 42mm push-fit option.
Several versions of the Zorki-4 were made by Krasnogorskiy Mechanicheskiy Zavod (KMZ) in Moscow from 1956 - 1973.
Earliest versions reputedly have highest build quality; identified by engraved dials, body and lens housing.
Much western propaganda about poor Soviet optics was evident during the cold war, but in reality they were often every bit as good as the German-made originals. Read on....

The Jupiter-3 lens (another Zeiss Sonnar copy) is the f1.5 variant of the Jupiter-8 and a good one is becoming rare and relatively very expensive. The design was different from the J-8 having 7 rather than 6 elements. It has a very wide front element and a 13-blade diaphragm giving it a stunning classic appearance. Like the J-8, the J-3 is capable of excellent shots.
Unfortunately there was quite a variation in the quality of this lens, which was at the cutting edge of optics manufacture in its time, so a good sharp one is worth hanging onto.

The 35mm / f2.8 wide-angle Jupiter-12 lens can be substituted along with an accompanying 35mm viewfinder which fits into the accessory shoe. The J-12 is a great Soviet copy of the super-sharp post-war f2.8 Zeiss Jena Biogon lens which was first patented in 1946. Field of view is 63 degrees. First lenses were apparently made from left-over Zeiss parts.
Its non-retrofocal design gives very good sharpness and contrst at the expense of being subject to a degree of vignetting. It was made in aluminium finish from about 1950 to 1960 in the KMZ factory. Then production moved to its sister company LZOS (Lutkarino optical glass factory).
It was later made in black enamel finish from 1973 until Zorki-4K production stopped in 1980.

The 50mm / f3.5 Industar-22 collapsible lens (1948-1953), which is coated, can also be fitted, this being a direct copy of the pre-war (and hugely more expensive!) Leitz equivalent; the f3.5 ' Elmar' which was standard fit on many pre-war Leica cameras. It is of telescopic construction and collapses down into the camera body when not in use.
Its optics design was inspired by the very successful Zeiss Tessar lens, designed by Dr. P. Rudolph, C1902 and is apparently very sharp.

Other LSM Soviet lenses which can be used are the collapsible (or fixed version) Industar I-50 (1953-1971) , the fixed I-26 (1955-1963), the I-61 and the I-61L/D. All of these are Tessar design variants.
The latest one, the I-61L/D (1961 to present day) is the culmination of 61 years of Soviet Tessar-type lens development. It was designed by G.G. Sliusarev and W. Sokolov. The I-61L/D is a high contrast lens, being excellent for architectural photography and is unusual in that it uses exotic STK-6 rare-earth lanthanum crown glass. There is a story (unconfirmed) that this glass is very slightly radioactive(!) but is considered safe as the output is no more than typical background radiation.

I went to visit my older brother this past weekend as he is going overseas again for a year and is leaving March 4th. Anyway, right after he graduated high school in the 77, he went into the Air Force and was sent overseas to Okinawa, Japan. He picked up this Canon AE-1 with various lenses direct from the factory and after some use, it's been sitting in the camera bag in his closet ever since. I had hinted around that I would be interested in it and his wife finally convinced him to give it to me.

As far as I know, it's still in working order. The shutter advanced but I haven't ran any film in it as of yet. I have plenty of 35mm in the crisper drawer in the fridge so hopefully I will be able to test it out soon. That zoom is a MONSTER, It really seems like a nice system. No telling how much he paid for everything when he bought it originally. I think he said he paid $700 for the zoom lens alone. He had one of those bulb shutter release dohickies that was like 25 feet long but the bulb was toast from heat damage, a flattened glob of plastic, so I tossed it.

Paragliding

Paragliding

(taken in Tromso, Norway)
From Wikipedia:
Paragliding (known in Greece, France, Spain and Portugal as parapente - ????????? or ?????????? ??????? in Greek) is a recreational and competitive flying sport. A paraglider is a free-flying, foot-launched aircraft. The pilot sits in a harness suspended below a fabric wing, whose shape is formed by the pressure of air entering vents in the front of the wing. The paraglider wing (or ‘canopy’ or parafoil) is a self-inflating structure consisting of a row of cells, most of them open at the front and all of them closed at the back, joined together side by side. Moving through the air keeps them inflated as air enters in the front but can't get out the back. In cross-section, the cells form an aerofoil shape to produce lift, just like an airplane wing. The pilot is supported underneath the wing from a web of lines (each with the strength to support the pilot). The lines are then attached to strap-like risers that are attached to the pilot's harness. Controls held in the pilot’s hands, which pull down the trailing edge (rear portion) of the wing, are used to control speed and to turn. The pilot is strapped into the bucket-seat harness, which usually holds a reserve parachute, and includes a ‘speed system’ which pulls down the leading edge for maximum flying speed. Modern recreational harnesses have a foam or air-bag back protector. Paraglider wings typically have an area of 25–35 m? with a span of 8–12 m, and weigh 3–7 kg. Combined weight of wing, harness, reserve, instruments, helmet etc is around 12–18 kg. Glide ratio ranges from 6:1 for recreational paragliders to about 10:1 for modern competition paragliders (compared with an average of 15:1 for hang gliders and up to 60:1 for some sailplanes), and speed range is typically 20–65 km/h (stall speed – max speed): though safe flying range is smaller. Modern paraglider wings are made of high-performance non-porous fabrics such as Porcher Sport & Gelvenor, with Dyneema/Spectra or Kevlar/Aramid lines. For storage and carrying, the wing is folded into the harness seat, and the whole stored in a backpack (which is normally stowed in the harness in flight). Recent developments in light-weight harness design include the ability to turn the harness inside out such that it becomes the backpack removing the need for a second storage system. Tandem paragliders, designed to carry the pilot and one passenger, are larger but otherwise similar. They usually have higher trim speeds (fly faster), are more resistant to collapses and have a slightly higher sink rate compared to solo paragliders. Parachutes including skydiving canopies are generally used for descending purposes (i.e. jumping out of an aircraft or for dropping cargo) while paragliders are generally used for ascending. Paragliders are categorized as "ascending" parachutes by canopy manufacturers worldwide and involve "free flying" (without a tether). However Paragliders can sometimes be tethered for a short period during towing to get airborne.

Last Breath

Last Breath

(What remains of a lamppost)

I've worked at Lakeland Village since 1992. In the 15 years that I've been here, I have accidentally hit this lamppost and scratched or dented my car, on (at least) three different occasions.

You see, this lamppost WAS in the most inconvenient of locations. It was actually occupying the last parking space in the employee parking lot. Sure, this particular parking space was extra wide, leaving room for both a car and the lamppost. But, after a long, hard, day, when you are (mindlessly) headed towards retreat, you have the distinct tendency to back out (and to the left).

That same distinct tendency that makes you back out (and to the left), is the exact same distinct tendency that allows you ignore the blind spot on your right. You suddenly realize your mistake, just as you hear the lamppost start scraping along the entire right-front quarter panel of your (brand new) Jeep Grand Cherokee (Limited Edition).

scchchshhccsssccratch!

Well, as it happens, I know that I'm not the only one who has hit this thing. Last year, someone else actually knocked the whole damned thing over. They cracked the pole completely in half and sent the lamp crashing down into a million pieces on the ground. Nevertheless, this was not to be the end of this menace.

The Home Owner's Association, with their infinite "Mr. Fix-it" wisdom, simply came along, disconnected all power, sawed off the broken part, and called it fixed. Unfortunately, they left three feet of this (spiked) wooden beast still planted firmly within the tarmac. They must have thought, "This lamppost has been freakin' buried here since, well, before 1970. What?! Do you expect us to just dig it up and leave a huge, gaping hole in the parking lot for someone to fall in to?"

Huh!? It was hard enough to see this (bastard) when it stood 25 feet tall and had a giant, glowing orange, sodium-vapor street lamp attached to the top of it. Better yet, let's cut it down. Not at its lowest, closest, nearest to the ground, base-est, best-est point. Oh no, this will not do. Let's cut it just below the window-level of most cars and SUV's. Let's go ahead and leave this stump right where it is. And, let's see how much longer everyone will continue to forget that it's still there! Yeah…yeah…that's the ticket.

It took a year.

Last Tuesday, when I arrived at work, I saw the final and remaining portion of the lamppost lying on the ground. It appeared to be crawling with one arm outstretched; scratching, pulling and clinging to life. Gasping for its "Last Breath."

I had to shoot it…call it a mercy shooting.

Maintenance finally removed the dead carcass of this (car eating) lamppost a couple of days later. Though it was on display for nearly a week, only I understood the significance. This lamppost was never meant to be. Yet, I knew…somehow, I knew: THIS photograph was to be its final glory and this story, the entire reason it "was."

street prostitute 13: photographing Ronda

street prostitute 13: photographing Ronda

…In a minute, though, she goes over to the window in her drug dealer’s room, cracking the blinds, looking outside. "How's the light out there?" she asks me. "Is there enough to get some pictures of me on Ponce de Leon—on my corner?"

"Probably so."

"You wanna try it?"

I do, of course.
. . .

"This is my corner right here."

Turning and pulling the car over, I say, "But listen, Ronda... Please...do not..."

"I wanna do it without a coat on, because this is a pretty shirt."

"But don't...don't...uh...don't take any business right now. All right?"

Ronda's corner is the corner where Kennesaw dead-ends into Ponce de Leon: three buildings up from the hotel and one building down from the Starvin' Marvin. I've parked next to Potpourri, a junk and antiques store painted so purple you can see it half a mile away.

Shucking her coat, chilly or not, Ronda crosses Kennesaw and, glancing about self-consciously, sits down on the bottom step of a flight of steps that lead up to a rambling old brick and stucco apartment house.

I crouch down in front of her, aiming my camera at her and adjusting my lens.

"Do I look okay? My complexion's clearing up."

"You look fine."

Her face comes into focus...and I see gazing at me those same sad, sensitive, beautiful eyes that so moved me when I saw my first picture of her more than two years ago.

In a daze, I squeeze the shutter…

Exploding Storm Clouds

Exploding Storm Clouds

I took this picture out my back door on June 10th, being the peak of the stormy season this year, while the storms that blew through threatened us frequently with hailstorms, thunder and lightning storms, and and even tornadoes among the many windstorms. Among all of these threats, spring decided to jump into full swing, making everything that grows around here more green, lush, and colorful than ever I remember it being and lasting longer than I ever remember it doing so before.

Amid the many rain and hail showers along with a tornado watch on this particular day, if I remember right, I caught this amazing storm cloud display. The sun rays were just shooting through it in an explosive fashion though the sun was clear across the other side of the sky. Since I had to piece together four pictures to get this one--because I don't have a wide angle lens at this time--some of this storm cloud's spectacular illumination and definition of the sun rays have faded. However the overall effect of the picture, I think, was captured.

When I played around with it in one of my graphics programs, I even found that when I changed the color of it to red, it actually looked like a huge bomb exploding. It is in these moments of nature's massive displays of power, that I am reminded of God's all-surpassing power, a power that far exceeds even any of these kinds of storms on earth or in this solar system, let alone in the entire universe.

As this realization sweeps over me, it evokes a kind of awe and wonder at who and what He must really be... Within my heart, while in this state, I ask His many critics this: Is it then too wonderful to imagine that in His might, He could stoop down and bless us with a portion of Himself in Jesus His Only Begotten Son through a virgin in all holiness so that we could live with Him in Eternity because His love for us is more explosively powerful than any power display in nature? No, it is not too wonderful to imagine...

Some imagined atheists may claim that this way of looking at God is too simplistic, that the universe displaying its power speaks of itself, not God, that it is eternal. My reply to that is nothing in the universe is eternal and in fact ALWAYS decays; therefore, it cannot be eternal. It instead is decaying. Truth be told, linear time and a decaying creation can only exist if there is such a thing as eternity. It all had to start somewhere with linear time and creation but not so in eternity where there is no beginning or end thus no decay since decay has an end.

Atheists are free to "believe" in the universe if they please, but it makes them, then, not atheists but rather universe worshipers. And I would much rather "believe" in One who showed His massive power by sending His Only Begotten Son because He loves me personally so that I too can live with Him in eternity than "believe" in an impersonal universe that displays its power for obviously narcissistic purposes alone.

As a result, though these kinds of power displays in nature can sadly bring heartache and trouble to many, I sometimes find myself actually gaining faith in more of the Only Eternal One's abilities when I look at them from a distance, catching a rare glimpse at the whole picture in the midst of these exploding storm clouds.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here are some passages that spoke to me about what I was looking at in this picture and about what I was feeling regarding it all:

I love you, O LORD, my strength.

The LORD is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer;
my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge.
He is my shield and the horn [a] of my salvation, my stronghold.

I call to the LORD, who is worthy of praise,
and I am saved from my enemies.

The cords of death entangled me;
the torrents of destruction overwhelmed me.

The cords of the grave [b] coiled around me;
the snares of death confronted me.

In my distress I called to the LORD;
I cried to my God for help.
From his temple he heard my voice;
my cry came before him, into his ears.

The earth trembled and quaked,
and the foundations of the mountains shook;
they trembled because he was angry.

Smoke rose from his nostrils;
consuming fire came from his mouth,
burning coals blazed out of it.

He parted the heavens and came down;
dark clouds were under his feet.

He mounted the cherubim and flew;
he soared on the wings of the wind.

He made darkness his covering, his canopy around him—
the dark rain clouds of the sky.

Out of the brightness of his presence clouds advanced,
with hailstones and bolts of lightning.

The LORD thundered from heaven;
the voice of the Most High resounded.

He shot his arrows and scattered the enemies ,
great bolts of lightning and routed them.

The valleys of the sea were exposed
and the foundations of the earth laid bare
at your rebuke, O LORD,
at the blast of breath from your nostrils.

H

This is an expanded technique because I am doing three or four layers of painting/henna/acrylic to give it more depth. I am adding a lot of shading/paint AFTER I do the henna and layer of clear poly.

Paimex E35

Paimex E35

Now repaired. Maybe.....

Counter failed with test roll six months ago. Easy fix once I had the thing disassembled. A little clutch arm was out of alignment. Spring responsible for keeping clamshell open or closed broke away from mounting points. Easy fix once I found the darn spring! Film would not advance past the first three or four frames. That proved more difficult to correct. As far as I can tell the take up spool slipped under the slightest load while advancing film. Exact same thing happened with a NIB FED-5 rangefinder a good while back. Simply a matter of adjusting a single screw to provide proper amount of resistance/slippage. To little resistance/slippage and film will not wind onto take up spool. Film became all piled up near take up spool in both cameras. To much resistance/slippage and the film will begin tearing at the sprocket holes.....ratio changes as film is wound onto a spool.
