Wild life adventure at Oaks Bottom I took my little grandson for a walk in his stroller. I asked for directions and was told that it might probably take about 15 minutes from the road down to the river and another quarter of an hour to walk up all the way to Division Avenue. I am a good and fast walker. I love to walk, but what I came to find out was not what I had expected. It took me a couple of hours to get back to our start point. I pushed the stroller on that long, hot asphalt road, mainly for bicycle riders and roller scatters, hardly any pedestrians were to be seen. Little Paz started to cry and I couldn't see the end of this never-ending lane. One my right hand side was that iron fence, and on my left had side the river. There we were, stuck in the middle, with no way to cut short. If it weren't for the baby's crying I would have enjoyed the walk, but I did get very worried for him, as I had no idea how long it would take me to get us back to "civilization". I stopped in the shade of a tree and took him up in my arms to comfort him. I fed him a few cherries, which I have peeled with my teeth, and I drank a lot of water. The breeze refreshed us a bit. We continued for another two miles until we finally got back on track. What an adventure! I was so relieved when I got the baby to his mama to be nursed. Safe and sound in her arms he sucked himself to sleep. I got quite a suntan. Immature Black-Crowned Night Heron Oh, dear. This little guy began venturing from his nest and made it all the way to the edge of his eucalyptus tree when either a gust of wind or his own free will landed him here in the cypress. Unfortunately, someone thought it would be a good idea to walk their dog through the rookery (at the Power Plant on the Embarcadero) while these babies are learning to fly. This one got spooked by the dog, took off flapping his wings as best he could and ended up on the ground. To make a long story short, the dog walker returned so I took this little one to Pacific Wildlife Care where they offered to take him back to the rookery (along with a ladder) to get him back into his tree, high enough to be a bit safer than on the ground. As harpy as I'm sounding, I don't have it out for all dogs and dog owners. Just some. By the way, I counted six dead baby herons/egrets on the floor of this rookery and a dead one dangling from the branches of its tree...it happens a lot. This could be a good shot if there weren't umpteen twigs and branches in the way :-) Nycticorax nycticorax.
