Portrait - Flamenco Guitar
While waiting to head to dinner one evening, we listened to a little Flamenco guitar. It was good to hear and the weather was perfect.
I reworked this image. There were some out of focus area problems with the previous version. So I took the liberty to correcting the condition and reloaded this. The lens did most of the work, so I didn't have to do very much at all. The 50mm f/1.8 II wide open is simply over the top amazing.

Aeolian harp
An aeolian harp, a wind activated string instrument. These were very popular as household instruments during the Romantic Era. The traditional aeolian harp is essentially a wooden box including a sound board , with strings stretched lengthwise across two bridges. It is placed in a slightly opened window where the wind can blow across the strings to produce sounds. The strings can be made of different materials (or thicknesses) and all be tuned to the same note, or identical strings can be tuned to different notes. Tuning pegs are just out of view, bottom left.

Saw Solo
I saw Swedish band "The Tiny" soundchecking in the afternoon at the Siesta Festival in Sweden. They sounded great and had such cool instruments (double bass, cello, wind organ, etc) that I set my alarm to make sure not to miss their gig. This is Leo Svensson (cello, organ, etc) in the middle of a saw solo. It sounded amazing.
Technical note: I had been out photographing bridges and rivers and such during the afternoon, and forgot to take my camera out of bracket exposure mode. So of the 30 shots I took, ten were underexposed by 1 and 2/3 of a stop and ten were overexposed by the same. Thanks to the beauty of RAW I was able to deal with the overexposed ones pretty well (the dark ones get too noisy). The left hand shot is correctly exposed and the other two rescued. I like the fact that the shutter speed was made low on the right two. Mistakes are good sometimes...

march 14, 2002.
i got a text from drummerboy dave yesterday asking if we had ever played with since by man. i thought that we did, but i wasn't positive. i looked at my batch of old flyers, and we indeed did play a show together.
(on 03/14/02 we (dolorous canter) played a show with john brown battery, littleman complex, brazilia, and since by man at the fireside bowl in chicago.)
it turned out that brad, the singer for 'since', is a commercial director now, and dave had worked with him on a few shoots. brad asked dave for a copy of the flyer after i confirmed that we did play a show together. i love it when paths cross!
on a side note, it was during this show that we first played 'i need' live. after our set, ryan from littleman complex (and hewhocorrupts) looked at me kind of weird and told me that he really liked the 'halloween' song. we had played a couple of show with littleman complex prior to this show, but i had no idea what song he was talking about as we had no song with the word 'halloween'. it took me weeks to figure out that he actually meant 'i need'.
after figuring it out, i was a bit amazed as i wrote 'i need' fairly quickly. the song was inspired by dave's old band corel and was the only song that i wrote all the lyrics for. it was also the only song that i did co-main vocals/screams on with nazzy naz. (i only did background vocals for some of our other songs.)
on a side-side note, when we were getting ready to record 'i need', i bought a cheap electric violin for the quite part of the song. however, i couldn't get it to stay in tune no matter how much i tried, thus i didn't bother bring it to the studio and it was never used for the song.

The Carnatic
This is a beautiful wreck and I loved the light coming into the water
The Carnatic is one of the older wrecks in the Red Sea and after her sinking in September 1869 she lay alone on the reef of Abu Nuhas for over 100 years before being joined by several others wrecks in the 1970’s and 1980’s. She is of iron framed planked construction and was a P&O passenger sail & steam ship, 90m in length with a beam of 12 metres.
On September 12th 1869 she began what ended up being her last voyage from Suez with an intended destination of Bombay under the command of Captain P.B Jones (who had taken command of the Carnatic in 1867). With 176 crew, 34 passengers she had a cargo of wine, cotton bails and ?40,000 of royal mint gold. It is thought and widely reported that Captain Jones did most of the navigation and course plotting and with the inevitable lack of sleep certain bearings were not taken during watch changes. Whatever the reasons, the Carnatic struck the reef of Abu Nuhas just after midnight where she did not sink immediately but became stuck on the shallow reef top. It was a clear night and the decision was made not to abandon ship, but for crew and passengers alike to remain on board. Captain Jones knew that another P&O vessel, the Sumatra was due to pass them in the opposite direction on route to Suez, and intended to seek her assistance. After a perilous night on the reef top the Sumatra had still not arrived on Sept 13th. The Carnatic appeared to be in fair condition and as nightfall approached for the second time, Captain Jones made the fateful decision to ride out another night on the floundering vessel. After some 36 hours on the reef the Carnatic finally gave up her hopeless battle against the elements and broke in half, late morning on Tuesday Sept 14th 1869. The passengers and crew abandoned ship, using the lifeboats which were not damaged and could still be launched. They allegedly used some of the previously jettisoned, tightly packed cotton bails as flotation devices, and the remaining 7 lifeboats then made for Shadwan (or Shaker) island, approx 2 miles to the south. The cotton bails were also used to keep them warm during the cold night experienced in this area in contrast to the heat of the day and to make a fire. The lives of 26 crew and 5 passengers were lost.

Wine music
The glass harmonica, also known as the glass armonica, bowl organ, hydrocrystalophone, or simply the armonica (derived from "harmonia," the Greek word for harmony), is a type of musical instrument that uses a series of glass bowls or goblets graduated in size to produce musical tones by means of friction (instruments of this type are known as friction idiophones).
Because its sounding portion is made of glass, the glass harmonica is a crystallophone. The phenomenon of rubbing a wet finger around the rim of a wine goblet to produce tones is documented back to Renaissance times; Galileo considered the phenomenon (in his Two New Sciences), as did Athanasius Kircher.
The Irish musician Richard Poekrich is typically credited as the first to play an instrument composed of glass vessels by rubbing his fingers around the rims.[1] Beginning in the 1740s, he performed in London on a set of upright goblets filled with varying amounts of water. During the same decade, Christoph Willibald Gluck also attracted attention playing a similar instrument in England.
------- Wikipedia --------
Came across this old man with his glass harmonica setup outside the Marina in Old Town, Alexandria. In between dishing out some amazing tunes and being a subject of tons of picture takers, he also engaged the considerably large audience with interesting stories of other glass harmonica players around the world, its history and how its a dying art.

That afternoon, I had got red paint on my fringe. Instead of just leaving it, I trimmed it off...then it was wonky, so I tried to even it up...I ended up with hair that looked like a davy crocket hat.

Fluting
I'm so excited! Mary Grace will be in the 6th grade this fall and is starting beginner band. She choose the flute, just like me, and we got it out of the attic and dusted it off this week.
Here she is trying to hold it in the proper position. She kept wanting to round her back and place the mouth-piece on her shoulder. I kept telling her, "its not a violin." LOL I remember how hard it was on my back for the first few months of learning the flute, when I wasn't positioned correctly.

Framing... It's what I do
I own and operate a small picture framing business and art gallery. I have been in business since April on 1986, almost 25 years! Over the years I have framed many interesting items, oriental fans, a child's tuxedo jacket, arrowheads and even a badminton racket!
This week I completed the most complicated framing job I've ever done, a violin that was owned by this lovely woman's grandfather. It was given to her by her 92 year old cousin who didn't want it to end up in a yard sale. Since she doesn't play, my customer, Barbara, decided to have it framed. Unfortunately the cousin had a stroke and passed away before I finished the job.
The grandfather had passed away in 1932, so this is a very old violin. Included in the frame are 2 extra bridges, the box a box for the rosin 2 extra pegs and a photo of Henry Fish, the grandfather.
My friend Marilyn and I hung the violin for barbara today. Marilyn did the calligraphy that is in the frame. It says:
Our Grandfather's Violin
Henry Fish
1867-1932
Clothes Pegs , Dolly Pegs and the Gypsy's Curse !
CLOTHES LINES ! Four wooden pegs from a good few years ago . Surely modern pegs don't last so long do they ? Times were when gypsies would go door to door selling clothes pegs . If a woman would not answer her door to a gypsy or refuse to buy a few ,she would expect to be cursed . It was just unfortunate should she not have enough money to buy . Quite how powerful or long-lasting a gypsy's curse would be I do not know !
P.S. Tesco value pegs are quite good but the checkout girls there are not obviously gypsies and would have different ways of cursing !
