They usually come out for the first time when they are two weeks old and I spent all my time on this trip sitting and watching my favorite burrows.

The stand fo cattails at one of the ponds at the Dallas Audubon Center were not as thick as I remember in the past but still had a good close up of seeds of life getting ready to spread. This particular pond always full of water was mostly dry or muddy - 2011 was a tough summer in Dallas.

Dia 19 de Janeiro de 2004, a pagina de relacionamentos Orkut entra no ar. Logo no primeiro dia, o site recebe um grande numero de visitas.

O Orkut e uma rede social filiada ao Google, criada em 24 de Janeiro de 2004 com o objetivo de ajudar seus membros a conhecer pessoas e manter relacionamentos. Seu nome e originado no projetista chefe, Orkut Buyukkokten, engenheiro turco do Google.
O alvo inicial do orkut era os Estados Unidos, mas a maioria dos usuarios sao do Brasil e da India. No Brasil e a rede social com maior participacao de brasileiros, com mais de 23 milhoes de usuarios em janeiro de 2008. Na India e o segundo mais visitado.

Orkut is a social network affiliated with Google, created on January 24, 2004 with the goal of helping its members to meet people and maintaining relationships. Its name is originated in the chief designer, Orkut Buyukkokten, Turkish engineer at Google.
The initial target orkut was the United States, but most users are from Brazil and India. Brazil is the largest social network with the participation of Brazil, with more than 23 million users in January 2008. India is the second most visited.

Tech Details: If your curious how one takes a photograph of all of one's photo gear the answer is you borrow a friends camera from down the street (a Rebel XT/350D with a Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L lens).

Lighting provided by one White Lighting X1600 to camera right difused through a large softbox, with another White Lighting X1600 to camera right difused through a beauty dish (hey it was easier than getting out another softbox, it was late and I was really tired). Background is two pieces of black foam core, with a piece of clear plexi on top of the bottom piece of foam core. Triggered by a good ole-fashioned sync cable connected to a Nikon AS-15 on the hot shoe since the RebelXT/350D lacks a PC Sync connector.

A macro of tiny cactus hairs. My new macro lens is a 4x by Lensmate. To start with, the G7 takes awesome macros, it is perhaps its best attribute. You're not supposed to be able to add lenses to the G7 except a couple special Canon lenses, but with an adapter you can add the Lensmate lenses. Because of the design of the G7, you basically have to have it at full extension (6x) in order for the additional lens to work (the adapter clips the field of vision otherwise), so 4x lens times 6x camera = 24x. I mean 24x magnification is way cool, but geez it's hard to get a focus. The field of focus is very very very miniscule. No pain no gain.

And thats the ganpati i used to visit when i was young. Thanks again for clicking such wonderful pictures of the Lord. I have been forwarding your site to many GSBs here in USA. Hope you don't mind.

My reason to contact you was to see if you had a chance of clicking some pics during the visarjan of the GSB Ganpati like last year.

Also i am sure you are aware there is a similar ganpati in Wadala which is part of our sis concern group. Smaller idol but more beautiful by majority consensus. Its near the Wadala Bus Depot and that's a 10 days festival unlike 5 days at King circle. Any plan of capturing that Ganpati.

Another one that's close to me is the Tilak Nagar Chembur Ganpati. Famously know as the Chota Rajan ganpati. Any plans to visit that. Sorry i am kinda giving my wish list to you since i cant go there personally.

GSB King circle is put up by people from South Kanara Mangalore and Wadala one is put up up by North Kanara Karwar etc

I dont know anyone and with my attire and Muslim background it is kind of tough if you dont know anyone at those mandaps , specially the Wadala one which I would love to shoot once in my life time.

I dont think I will be visiting those that you mentioned I am from Bandra so I shoot close to home and if God permits I will shoot the visargan at Chowpatty last time I was with Lal Bah Cha Raja almost till the end so missed the other Ganpatis

I am on my yearly vacation staying on St. Maarten. This has become my home away from home since 2003. The friendly Island has embraced me, inspired me and always rejuvenates me. I hope to instill in all of you the feeling I have when taking these images. As artists we all have a special moment when all the elements, vibes and feelings grasp us, this image is one of those, as I took this photo I had a emotional connection, you know what I mean, goose pimples, take my breath away moments. I am honored to share that with you all. I am on Island for 9 more days, hope to share more of my experience with you.

This is a brief history of the Island.

Before Columbus arrived here during his second voyage in 1493, the island had already been inhabited for some one thousand years. The first people to settle here were a tribe of Arawak Indians who left their homeland in the Orinoco basin of South America and kept migrating upwards along the chain of islands in the Caribbean. They gave it the name "Sualouiga" meaning "Land of Salt" for the salt-pans and the brackish water they found here in great abundance. The few fresh water springs around Paradise Peak, Mount William, Billy Folly, and in the Lowlands could only support a small population, and this is where they mainly tended to congregate. A number of artifacts from this period are to be found preserved in the St.Martin Museum: On the Trail of the Arawaks. The Arawaks were later supplanted by a more aggressive tribe of Indians, the Caribs, who came down from North America and for whom the entire Caribbean is named.

Columbus never actually set foot on the island, but rather claimed it for Spain as he was passing by. He sighted the island on November 11, 1493, the feast of St.Martin, thus giving the island its name. Aside from asserting title to the place, the Spanish never took much interest in St.Martin, so the Dutch, seeking an outpost halfway between their colonies in Brazil and Nieue Amsterdam (now New York), occupied the island in 1631. The Dutch West India Company installed Jan Claeszen van Campen as governor, erected their first fort on the site of Fort Amsterdam, and began to mine salt. Before long, however, the Spanish, who wished to maintain their state monopoly in this essential preservative, became aware of the incursion and in 1633 they recaptured the island, expelling all of the Dutch, who then moved on to occupy Curacao.

Over the next fifteen years, a number of abortive attempts were made by the Dutch to reclaim their lost possession, notably an assault led by Peter Stuyvesant in 1644 in which the future governor of Nieue Amsterdam lost his leg. The Spanish Commander, who was regularly besieged during this period, asked permission after his last victory to abandon the island, and in 1647 this right was finally conceded to him by the King of Spain. Laborers were brought in from Puerto Rico to dismantle the fortress, and the Spanish set sail, leaving behind, according to legend, a small contingent of French and Dutch who hid on the island and then sent out to neighboring colonies for reinforcements.

How the Dutch and French finally partitioned the island makes for a great story. Supposedly, the two groups held a contest. Starting at Oysterpond on the east coast, they would walk westwards -- the French along the northern edge, the Dutch along the southern -- and where they met they would draw a dividing line across the island. The French set off, having fortified themselves with wine, the Dutch with gin. The ill effects of the gin, however, caused the Dutchmen to stop along the way to sleep off their drunk; consequently, the French were able to cover a much greater distance. In truth, though, the French had a large navy just off shore at the time the treaty was being negotiated, and they were able to win concessions by threat of force. The treaty was signed on top of Mount Concordia in 1648, but despite the reputation for peaceful cohabitation, the border was to change another 16 times until 1815 when the Treaty of Paris fixed the boundaries for good.

The cultivation of sugar cane introduced slavery onto the island, and hundreds of African men, women, and children were imported for this purpose. The French finally abolished slavery on July 12, 1848 -- a date now celebrated as Schoelcher Day. The Dutch slaves were emancipated 15 years later. Following the end of slavery, the island entered a serious depression that lasted until 1939, when the island was declared a duty-free port. The Dutch began developing a tourist industry in the 1950's, but the French didn't take advantage of this opportunity until the 1970's. St.Martin continued its large-scale construction projects throughout the 1980's, but now most of the development has been completed, and great care has been taken to preserve the island's natural resources.

My Work Space At My Full Time Job!

In case I haven't mentioned recently, I love my full time job. I'm in Human Resources. I'm an SPHR, and a Corporate Recruiter. I spend a lot of time in this space. A few weeks ago, I took all my photos down with the intention of framing some of them, and showing them in a more special way.

I've been so busy across the board since then, that I couldn't get that done yet. The gray and blue-gray walls were giving me zero joy, so instead I put up a bunch of different shots that I already had printed along with some of the old faves. Obviously, I'm a very visual person, and I have felt the difference in my mood the past three days. Being able to glance over at my niece and nephew, Jessi the Wonder Dog, all the Birds, Flowers and Family lifts me up! I'm sure there is psychological data about the effects of surrounding yourself with postive images, and I living proof of the positive effects!

I have one serious wall with my credentials, etc. That is the wall most people see when they walk by. It's mostly only people who are coming to specifically see me, that are getting this view. Anyone who interacts with me, already knows I'm a creative nerd, AND a serious professional, or at least I hope so! =o) Hugs and thanks for viewing!

yeah i might be five years old. whatever.
got totally drenched, but it was worth it.

i hate having to crop pictures because it makes me feel like a bad photographer - ex. "why couldn't i just have taken the photo like this in the first place?" that said, i really have been sensing some improvement with my technical skills and this camera. i kind of dove into flickr/the world of DSLR photography like an idiot, just bought the one that my future roommate recommended me and started playing with it. i still haven't read the manual. whoops...

anyway. i've finally got the hang of the manual settings (that is what happens when you never take a photo class and are like "oh what does this big F mean?") and i usually am no longer needing to use presets and tutorials for getting the effects i want in my processing... that makes me really happy. i like to do things on my own.

i had this massively epic entry about love and relationships planned for today, but mr. rain thought he was clever. so i'll save that for tomorrow.

The "before Rin-hair" photo

I've had my hair about this length throughout most of my teen years and up to this point, all of my 20s.

I've always kept my hair as long as possible; because I like to have the option of doing all kinds of stuff with it - the burlesque vintage hair I uploaded late last year for example, and a whole bunch of cool loops and whorls, plaits and up-dos... the list is very long.

However, I was inspired to get a completely new haircut recently.

Spent ages researching hair shapes for different face shapes, and finally found something that I liked enough to take to a hairdresser.

Here my hair has some purple mixed in with it; for the last two years I've had purple highlights fading to blue at the tips, the two years before that purple-gloss deep brown hair, and before that, red and brown. Decided to return to a more natural colour with some subtle reds in the cut to follow.

I can't tell you what these buildings are for the life of me. I captured this design while in the San Juan Islands near Roche Harbor at a place called English Camp.

San Juan Island National Historical Park, also known as American and English Camps, San Juan Island, is a U.S. National Park on San Juan Island in Washington, made up by the sites of the British and U.S. Armies' camps during the Pig War. Both of these camps were set up in 1859 as response to a border dispute triggered by the killing of a pig. The camps were occupied for 12 years, until the Treaty of Washington was signed, negotiated by Kaiser Wilhelm I of Germany. The British abandoned their camp in November 1872, while the American camp was disbanded in July 1874.[3]
The site was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1961,[1] and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1966.[2]
The park is divided into two parts; an American Camp where US soldiers were stationed, and an English Camp, where the British Royale Marines established a garrison. English Camp is the only part of a US national park that commemorates an English military site and the only one that flies the British Union Flag.

After a half hour of choosing just to find out it's a separate processing charge for my new mouse pad on top of the processing for the photos! What a ripoff! Oh well, it should be nice. There are a few mousepads I want to get done including a photo Pyza did but I want to see how this one comes out first before I do anymore. Coops Shot Tower

While the polaroid effect is simulated using POLADROID software, the Hockney-style photo-collage is real, using separate shots of the tower.
This is the Coops Shot Tower in Melbourne. It was completed in 1890 and is 50 metres high. The historic building was saved from demolition in 1973 and was incorporated into the massive Melbourne Central complex in 1991 underneath an 84m high conical glass roof.
A "shot tower", for those who are curious, is a tower designed for the production of shot balls by freefall of molten lead, which is then caught in a water basin. The shot is used for projectiles in firearms.

After dropping the youngest off at Plymouth University, then in the same week, the eldest to Newcastle, it was time for a quick visit to Whitby on the way back south.
I resisted the urge to photograph my favourite boat until, walking back up the Khyber Pass after having fish and chips on the pier, I caught sight of the Bark Endeavour sailing on her evening sail with the setting sun on her.
Just serene.
One quick shot and then the sun went in.
This is the first image uploaded from the iMac and the last to be edited on the PC, as it's now having a mega sulk and won't let me use the photo-editing program downloaded into it.

Year 2. Week 4 of 52. Tröegs Brewing Co - Flying Mouflan Ale

I don't have a clue what a "mouflan" is, and the beer label is one of the oddest I've seen (it's a drawing of a bottlecap with wings and a tail), but I won't hold that against the brewery. Troegs is based in Harrisburg, PA; founded by the Trogner brothers in 1997. They distribute throughout the mid-Atlantic states and have a very good reputation for high quality crafted beers.

So how did I get this beer if they don't distribute in North Carolina? It's part of my winnings for the World Series bet I made with my best man. What a fool he was for thinking the Phillies actually had a chance! I guess it was appropriate that he sent a PA beer to settle the bet.

The Mouflan is a limited release Barleywine Ale which won the Bronze at the 2008 Great American Beer Festival in the barleywine category. So what is a barleywine? Well, the first thing to remember is that it's not a wine and that it has nothing to do with wine. The American version, which is derived from the milder English barleywine, is a highly alcoholic (7-12%) ale that has an intensely strong and complex taste, usually loaded up with hops to complement the rich malty taste that warms the palette. These beers are best served cool rather than cold to allow the complex flavors to appear. These beers also age very well and the intense hops will mellow out over time, which might be why the barleywine name was coined.

This offering from Troegs is no different. Coming in at 9.3%, it is definitely a beer to be savored slowly; preferably with fellow beer aficienados. The beer poured into my glass with a rich carmely brown color and a thin head. I sense the feel of caramel in all aspects of this beer, from the color to the aroma and in the taste. My initial sip was a hop explosion, but it's seemed to have mellowed out as I get halfway through the first glass. I've had this bottle for about 3 months, not nearly enough time to mellow out the beer, but I can get impatient sometimes.

I personally can only drink Barleywines once in a while because of the intensity of the beer, but this is one of the best barleywines I've had a chance to enjoy and I am certainly making the most of it.

As for the photo. I've got the SB-600 with a homemade snoot around it firing from camera left just shy of overhead. The background is a small art thingie that I've got hanging in my living room. I've also inserted an overlaying texture to make it just a bit more interesting.

For the record, the theme for the 52.5 Weeks group is "Yellow".

Dick is wearing his Marine flight suit with our USAF patches sewn on--the training wing patch on the right chest, the Craig AFB Class 7104 patch on the left sleeve--I think a US flag was on the right sleeve. He must have got the word later that good marines don't wear USAF patches, or patches in general, on USMC flight suits since they were removed in other photos.

Dick was a Marine officer in Air Force pilot training class 7104 at Craig AFB near Selma, Alabama, Nov 1969 to Dec 1970. He was the senior officer in our B section and therefore section leader. There were two sections to the class. He was a serious officer, quiet spoken with a subtle and sharp sense of humor. He was the poster boy for a marine officer--professional, upright, always perfectly groomed and a natural leader who somehow managed to keep the unruly, unfocused pack of us AF junior officers out of trouble. He was always chiding us and the Air Force. He would joke: "I'd better learn to flare while I'm with a force that does it!" And: "Laugh, everytime I drop it in, I'm just that much more proficient as a Marine pilot."

After graduating with his new wings, he went on to fly the A-4. In December 1975 he was airborne with hung live ordnance hanging from his wings. Rather than risk harming someone on the ground by trying to jink the ordnance free, he elected to attempt a soft landing at Yuma Marine Corps Air Station, Arizona. The ordnance broke free on touchdown and exploded, destroying his aircraft and claiming his life. He is buried in Iowa.

"Grunoot" was and is one of my personal heroes. He was a positive presence in the life of everyone who knew him. He was survived by a wife and at least one son I've located on the internet, living in Europe, married with a son.
