Utah's ICAC has one of the highest arrest/conviction rates of Internet predators in the United States. Brief language is inappropriate for children "Never use a long word when a diminutive one would suffice" - unless you're talking to children, it seems. Or perhaps the language used by attorneys to list all the facts and points of law pertinent to a specific case is not suitable for children. That I can understand. Then again, maybe they meant the language of short, tight-fitting underpants. Thomas T. Hillman Thomas T. Hillman was born near Clarksville, Montgomery County, Tennessee, at the old Marable Homestead, February 2, 1844. His ancestral history is an interesting one, and almost coeval on this continent with the settlement of America, but its chief interest comes from the intimate connection of the name of Hillman with the subject of iron-making, particularly in the South. Glancing back to the earliest time of which there is any authentic record of the Hillman family, we find that the father and mother, from whom came all the members of this family, were Hollanders, and first came to America about five generations ago, or more than a century from the present date. This couple landed in Philadelphia, and, among the most interesting things connected with their life in the then primitive Philadelphia, was the purchase by Mr. Hillman of a tract of land consisting of twenty acres now in the very heart of the city. It is bounded by Chestnut, Walnut, and Seventh Streets, and by the Delaware River. Among other notable buildings standing at present on this property are the Continental Hotel and the United States Bank. In consequence of the return of Mr. Hillman to his native land, and death there, this land was sold for taxes, but subject to redemption any time within the following ninty-nine years. A son of Daniel Hillman went to Philadelphia in 1840 or '41, and with two of his brothers, George and Charles, employed counsel to investigate the matter, but it was found that one hundred and two years had expired since the tax sale had taken place, or just three years more than the limit allowed for the redemption of the land. Mr. Hillman was engaged in the dairy business during all of his lifetime in America. He was recalled to Holland by the death of a son and daughter, and some months after his return died. His wife continued in the dairy business up to the time of her death. Three sons, James, Daniel H., and George, survived this union, and each of them reared families. James and Daniel H. for some years carried on the wagon and blacksmith business at Trenton, New Jersey. Daniel H., in copartnership with a party by the name of J. L. James, built a forge for the manufacture of iron near Valley Forge, New Jersey, in 1814, but it was soon afterward washed away by a big freshet on the stream where it was situated, when Mr. James took a precipitate departure, leaving all the debts to be paid by his partner. In New Jersey, in those days, the law inflicted imprisonment for debt. Daniel H. owned, near Barnegat Bay, a farm, store, schooner, and ship. These he surrendered to satisfy the indebtedness of the firm, and went to New York. This was in the year 1816. He left his wife and children in New York and went to Chillicothe, Ohio, then the capital of the State. He built a forge on Paint Creek for the manufacture of hammered iron. In the following year, 1817, his family, consisting of wife, four sons and one daughter, joined him in his new home. The names of his children were Daniel, the oldest, who was born in Trenton, New Jersey, February, 1807; Jane, James, George W., and Charles E. The mother of these children was Grace Huston. There being no railroads then in the United States, his family traversed this great distance in wagons. Daniel H. Hillman ran this forge for two years, and then moved to Bath County, Kentucky, in 1822, and built and operated a number of forges up to the year 1827, when Mrs. Hillman died. The last place at which he worked was near Greenupsburg, Kentucky, for Leven S. andT. T. Shreeves. During the stay of Daniel H. at this place we have the first mention of his son Daniel (the father of the subject of this sketch), in connection with the important industry which the former had so faithfully fostered. Young Hillman assisted his father in securing coal and in the shipment of iron to Cincinnati, Ohio, by flatboats. He was then in his nineteenth year and went to the steam furnace of L. S. andT. T. Shreeves, in Greenup County, Kentucky, and managed the coaling ground. He stayed with them two or three years, and was promoted to be bookkeeper and manager. His father, on the death of Mrs. Hillman, broke up housekeeping and went to Hanging Rock, Ohio, where he managed the Pine Grove Steam Furnace. He remained there some little time and then returned to Greenup County, Kentucky. In 1830 he went to New Orleans, and thence to Mobile, Alabama, in company with Dr. J. Goodrich and Casting Goodrich, and subsequently to Tuscaloosa County, Alabama. The following letter from Mr. Hillman to his son George affords an interesting insight into the condition of things as they stood at that early date in the mineral region of Alabama : Valley Forge, Bibb County, Alabama, August 21, 1830. Dear Son : These lines will inform you that I am well, and I express the sincere wish that you and your brother, sister and son, are similarly fortunate. I shall start one forge for Colonel McGehee in about fo Cincinnati: City Hall The headquarters for Cincinnati's government has been on this site since 1852, but the building erected then was not nearly as large as the present City Hall. It faced Plum Street, was surrounded by a small park and had a second story added a year or two later. In 1887, a local architect, Samuel Hannaford, who had designed Music Hall, won the architectural competition to design the new City Hall. The cornerstone for the new building was laid with Masonic ceremonies on August 16, 1888 and it was opened on May 13, 1893. Hannaford designed City Hall in a very popular style, Romanesque, as interpreted by H. H. Richardson, using massive stones, rounded arches and a tower. The stonework was done by the David Hummel Company, the ironwork by M. Clements, and the painting by F. Pedretti Sons. These were all Cincinnati firms. Today City Hall's stained glass windows attract the most attention. There are three sets of five each on the stair landings at the Plum Street end, one set of three on a stair landing on the Central Avenue end, seven lunettes (halfmoons) in the Council Chambers, and skylights above the stairs. These were made by the New York firm, Pottier Stymus & Co. G.C. Riordan & Co., a local company, supplied seven stained glass transoms for the police gymnasium. The large window visible from the Plum Street entrance illustrates the reference to Cincinnati as the Queen City in Longfellow's poem, "Catawba Wine". On the next landing are scenes depicting events of Cincinnati's early days: the way the settlers traveled, the work of building houses and the importance of religion in their lives. General Arthur St. Clair, governor of the Northwest Territory, arrived in 1790, established Hamilton County and named Cincinnati the county seat. On the third landing, the central window shows the ancient Roman citizen, Cincinnatus, for whom St. Clair and other officers of the Continental Army named their Society of the Cincinnati. To these Revolutionary War veterans, Cincinnatus symbolized the citizen who leaves his own work to serve as a military leader when needed and then chooses to return to civilian life, just as they had. This was the source of Governor St. Clair's name for the new county seat. The small windows in the Council Chambers show the seals of the Northwest Territory, Ohio and City of Cincinnati. The latter two are repeated in the windows at the west end, and there the first book printed in the Northwest Territory and Cincinnati, Maxwell's Laws, is commemorated. Many more fascinating details can bee seen in the windows in decorative ironwork and carved stone as well. Also, there are two ceiling paintings done in 1897 or later. In the Plum Street entrance is one by Walter Beck and in the Safety Director's office is one by Frank Duveneck and John Rettig; all three were well-known Cincinnati artists. Henry Billings Brown Henry Billings Brown was an Associate Judge of the Supreme Court. Graduating from Yale in 1856 with a law degree, Brown would move to Detroit, Mi where he would start a sucessful law career. Brown would become well known and in 1875, was nominated to a seat on the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan. Brown held this job for the next 15 years while also serving as a law professor at the University of Michigan. In 1890, Brown resigned his position on the District Court to accept a seat on the Supreme Court. He was nominated as an Associate Justice by President Benjamin Harrison. Browns tenure on the bench is known for his role in one case. Brown wrote the majority rule for Plessy v Ferguson. Homer Plessy was a black citizen in Louisiana who boarded a train on the East Louisiana Railroad. Louisiana state law requires that whites and black citizens be required seperate buildings, or in this case, railroad car. Plessy set on a white bench in one of the cars and refused to move. He was the arrested. Plessy sued Louisiana but Judge John Ferguson ruled in favor of Louisiana because of a state law. Plessy took the case to the Supreme Court. Plessy used the 13th and 14th Amendments to argue his case. Plessy would win the decision but only because Louisiana didnt have the proper amenities. Brown and the court decided that under law, each state can choose not to segregate their buildings or amenities. But by Federal Law, it is required that each state, if they do not segregate, they are required to offer the same amenites for both races. After, the case, Plessy still had to pay his fine but the courts ruling would be the first step in helping the south segragate. In 1906, Brown resigned from the bench and returned to Detroit to resume his law practice. He is buried at Elmwood Cemetery in Detroit, Mi. what color is your parachute? (project 365 - day 106) i bought a whole bunch of books from amazon recently, relating to job hunting, resumes, career changing, interviews. it's easier to update your resume and look for a job if you're staying within the same line of work. but if you're changing careers, it's a whole other ballgame. transferable skills are key. anyone can change careers, no matter how old you are, and i think it's really empowering and refreshing. did you know that the average person changes careers from 2 to 7 times in their lifetime? not positions, but actual careers. that means you can go from being a dog catcher (do they still exist? or are they just in cartoons?) to a lawyer to a teacher to a marketing exec to whatever your heart wants to be. i think one of the keys to being happy in life is finding work that you're passionate about. that you wake up everyday and you're excited to go to work, so much that it doesn't even feel like work. that sounds like an amazing feeling. Another prize for a Hero New York City, April 13, 2011—PEN American Center today named Nasrin Sotoudeh, a writer, lawyer, and leader of the women’s and children’s rights movement in Iran, as the recipient of its 2011 PEN/Barbara Goldsmith Freedom to Write Award. Sotoudeh was arrested on September 4, 2010, and is now serving an 11-year sentence for her outspoken advocacy in defense of her clients arrested after the June 2009 presidential elections and interviews she gave to human rights organizations and media about their cases. The award, which honors international literary figures who have been persecuted or imprisoned for exercising or defending the right to freedom of expression, will be presented at PEN’s Annual Gala on April 26, 2011, at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. Nobel Peace Prize laureate Shirin Ebadi, a close friend and associate of Ms. Sotoudeh, will attend the PEN Gala on April 26, 2011, and receive the award on her behalf. Ms. Ebadi, who is the author of Iran Awakening and the newly released memoir The Golden Cage: Three Brothers, Three Choices, One Destiny, will be available for interviews in conjunction with the event. “Nasrin Sotoudeh not only embodies the spirit of the PEN/Barbara Goldsmith Freedom to Write Award, but also the spirit of this remarkable year,” said Kwame Anthony Appiah, president of PEN American Center. “As a writer, as an activist, and as a lawyer she has dedicated herself to a simple and powerful idea: the principle that the rights guaranteed by law are absolute and shared equally by all. At a moment when women and men around the world are standing together peacefully to reclaim this most basic truth, she is in one of the world’s most infamous prisons, to the great shame of the Iranian government. In honoring her with this award, we stand with the millions of Iranians she has stood up for and inspired, and we urge individuals and governments around the world to join us in pressing for her immediate release.” Nasrin Sotoudeh, who is 47 and the mother of two young children, began her activism in 1991 as the only female writer for the Nationalist-religious publication Daricheh Goftegoo; one of her first projects was to prepare a series of interviews, reports, and articles on Iranian women to mark International Women’s Day, all of which her editor refused to run. After completing her Master’s Degree in International Law at Shahid Behshti University, Sotoudeh passed the bar exam in 1995 but was not permitted to practice law for another eight years, and so she concentrated on journalism instead, writing for several reformist newspapers, including Jame’e. When she was finally granted a law license in 2003, she specialized in women’s and children’s rights while continuing to write articles addressing these issues. Her clients have included women’s rights activists, among them the organizers of the grassroots, door-to-door One Million Signatures Campaign; journalists such as Isa Sharkhiz; political activists such as Hashmat Tabarzadi, head of Iran’s banned opposition group the Democratic Front; and Shirin Ebadi herself. She has also represented prisoners sentenced to death for crimes committed when they were minors and many Iranian opposition activists arrested in the crackdown following the June 12, 2009 presidential elections. On August 29, 2010, security officers raided Sotoudeh’s home and office, confiscating several of her files and documents. Authorities also froze her assets. On September 4, 2010, she was summoned to the special court in Evin prison and arrested on charges of “propaganda against the state,” “cooperating with the Human Rights Defenders Center,” and “conspiracy to disturb order.” She was denied access to her lawyer and was restricted family visits for the first several months of her detention. On January 9, 2011, Branch 26 of the Revolutionary Court sentenced Sotoudeh to a total of 11 years in prison—one year for “propaganda against the regime,” and a total of 10 years for the two charges of “acting against national security” and “violating the Islamic dress code (Hijab) in a filmed speech.” The court also banned her from practicing law and from traveling outside the country for 20 years, a term that begins after her release from prison and that for all intents and purposes confines her to Iran and bars her from her profession for life. Sotoudeh has gone on several hunger strikes since her arrest, refusing even water during one 11-day stretch, to protest her detention and ill-treatment inside Evin Prison. She has reportedly lost a considerable amount of weight and is in poor health. She is being held in Ward 209 of Evin Prison, where she has spent much of the time in solitary confinement. Sotoudeh is still awaiting a decision in the court of appeals. In announcing the award today in New York, Freedom to Write Program Director Larry Siems praised Nasrin Sotoudeh’s “unyielding spirit in her fight for justice, equality, and the rule of law in Iran.” Rochester, High St, 97 (Poor Traveller's House) Charity hostel for poor way-farers, now a museum with living accommodation above. The remarkable survival is the storeyed late C16 rear wing with 3 rooms to each floor to house the poor travellers which, with its open gallery, seems to be modelled on contemporary coaching inns. 3 storeys. Front: symmetrical 3 bays, each under a coped gable with renewed stone finial. The centre bay projects very slightly above ground floor. Gables linked by parapet; moulded cornice; prominent plat band between each floor. Roundel in central gable wall containing heraldic achievement. 2-light windows with mullion and moulded surround, plain sill, the casements with diamond leaded panes. Below each window, a depressed panel in the form of an apron, most of them containing texts. Central doorway with moulded cornice, the wooden door surround with double ovolo moulding, considerably renewed. rear elevation of main range: stair turret (of 1604) gabled, with one 1st floor sash window: 2 large external stacks with set-offs and tumbled brickwork, one largely C19 but possibly replacing an older stack. The rear wing (into which the 1604 stack intrudes): brick and framing; roof slope (Kent tiles) continues as a catslide over upper gallery of 5? (originally 6) half open bays, the part bay blocked by stair turret with lath and plaster infill between uprights, the whole supported by 4 large posts (chamfered with run-outs) which divide the lower external corridor. All rooms (except those closest to the main range, altered when stair turret and stack inserted) have 2-light casements with stanchions and lift-off hinges in ovolo moulded surrounds. Michigan Communities Prepare for Medical Marijuana Almost 100 community leaders from throughout Michigan learned about the Michigan Medical Marihuana Act (March 26, 2010) at a Michigan Municipal League (MML) workshop in Lansing. The law’s been in effect since December 2008 but questions still remain about how it will impact local governments. Event speakers weighed the possible economic benefits of the Act with the discussion centering on the right to farm marijuana , dispensaries and zoning. Several communities such as Garden City, Livonia, Niles and Roseville have already developed ordinances to deal with the law’s zoning and farming implications. Workshop attendees—elected and appointed officials, public safety officers and municipal attorneys—agreed the seminar was helpful. Hayes Mansion, San Jose Ca. The Hayes Mansion is a hotel resort in San Jose, California, United States. It was constructed originally as a mansion and has been referred to as one of the best examples of late 19th-century Mediterranean Revival architecture the Santa Clara Valley.[2] It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Originally the residence of the sprawling estate of the Hayes family, the mansion replaced the family’s wooden English Baroque style house that burned to the ground during 1899. During 1903, architect George Page was commissioned to build, if not a fireproof structure, then one featuring the latest fire safety features of the day. After the patriarch of the Hayes family, Anson Hayes, died, the family relocated from Wisconsin to California. Anson's widow, Mary, eventually remarried a San Jose attorney named Thomas Chynoweth. The new mansion was intended to provide a triple residence for Mary Chynoweth and the growing families of her two sons (Everis A. Hayes and Jay Orly Hayes), although Mary died during July of 1903 before the house was completed during November of the same year. The 41,000-square-foot (3,800 m2) Mediterranean villa expresses the extravagance of an era during which the rich and prominent lived and entertained in a grand style. Exotic woods, imported marble and ornate stained glass windows decorate the rooms of a building designed in the shape of a Maltese Cross. A long center section containing an 18-foot (5.45 m) wide solarium connects the south wing with the north wing. A loggia connects the east wing with the west wing. Although it is not evident, the walls are double brick with stucco coating. As a result of the fire that destroyed the earlier home, the design of the Hayes Mansion included many fire-safety features. Throughout the house there are fire hose cabinets that connect to water tanks on the third floor. The kitchen was located in a separate building and connected to the mansion with a glass and marble plant conservatory. Early during its history, the property operated in a completely self-sufficient manner, with its own power plant located on the grounds, as well as a post office, railroad station, carriage stop, lodgings for 40 ranch hands and even a chapel. The family also grew their own fruits and vegetables and raised their own livestock. In this idyllic setting, the Hayes brothers, Everis and Jay, raised their families, became prominent politicians, helped develop the Santa Clara Valley fruit industry and became the publishers of the newspaper San Jose Mercury. As evidence of their political influence, three U.S. Presidents have visited the mansion. After the Hayes family sold the property during the 1950s, the building remained vacant for some time and then became dilapidated. Purchased by the City of San Jose during the 1990s, the property was renovated and expanded to its present state.
