Snails that respire using a lung belong to the group Pulmonata, while those with gills form a paraphyletic group; in other words, snails with gills are divided into a number of taxonomic groups that are not very closely related. Snails with lungs and with gills have diversified widely enough over geological time that a few species with gills can be found on land, numerous species with a lung can be found in freshwater, and a few species with a lung can be found in the sea. Land snails Although the word snail is often used for all shelled gastropods, the word "snail" can also be used in a more limited sense to mean any of several species of large, air-breathing (pulmonate) land snails. Whichever land snail species is most commonly seen or most commonly eaten as escargot in a given area will usually be referred to as "snails" by the local people. Species of land snails live in almost every kind of habitat, from deserts and mountains to marshes, woodland, and gardens. However, certain species are "anthropophilic", which means they are found most often around human habitation. Land snails have thinner shells, opposed to water snails, which sometimes have very thick shells. Slugs Gastropod species which lack a conspicuous shell are commonly called slugs rather than snails, although, other than having a reduced shell or no shell at all, there are really no appreciable differences between a slug and a snail except in habitat and behavior. A shell-less animal is much more maneuverable, and thus even quite large land slugs can take advantage of habitats or retreats with very little space – places that would be inaccessible to a similar-sized snail, such as under loose bark on trees or under stone slabs, logs or wooden boards lying on the ground. Taxonomic families of land slugs and sea slugs occur within numerous larger taxonomic groups of shelled species. In other words, the reduction or loss of the shell has evolved many times independently within several very different lineages of gastropods, thus the various families of slugs are very often not closely related to one another. Biology (primarily but not exclusively of pulmonate land snails) Physical characteristics Most snails move by gliding along on their muscular foot, which is lubricated with mucus and covered with epithelial cilia. This motion is powered by succeeding waves of muscular contractions that move down the ventral of the foot. This muscular action is clearly visible when a snail is crawling on the glass of a window or aquarium. Snails move at a proverbially low speed (1 mm/s is a typical speed for adult Helix lucorum). They produce mucus to aid locomotion by reducing friction, and the mucus also helps reduce the snail's risk of mechanical injury from sharp objects. This means that they can 'walk' over sharp objects like razors without being injured. Snails also have a mantle, a specialized layer of tissue which covers all of the internal organs as they are grouped together in the visceral mass, and the mantle also extends outward in flaps, which reach to the edge of the shell and in some cases can cover the shell, and which are partially retractable. The mantle is attached to the shell and creates it by secretion. Most mollusks, including snails, have a shell which they have from the larval stage and which grows with them in size by the process of secreting calcium carbonate. Because of this, mollusks need calcium in their diet and environment to produce a strong shell. A lack of calcium, or low pH in their surroundings, can result in thin, cracked, or perforated shells. Usually a snail can repair damage to its shell over time if its living conditions improve, but severe damage can be fatal. When retracted into their shells, many snails with gills (including many marine, some freshwater and some terrestrial species) are able to protect themselves with a door-like anatomical structure called an operculum. Any similarities that Queens of the Stone Age may have to Kyuss are probably inevitable--all three members of this group were in Kyuss at one time or another. The intention of this band, however, is not to create Kyuss 2, but to make its own brand of noise. Falling somewhere between Can and Canned Heat, the trio brings an occasional electronic aura to the guitar-based chug of stoner rock. Frampton Comes Alive If you were challenged to name five rock albums that epitomized the '70s, Frampton Comes Alive! should probably top the list. Former Humble Pie guitarist Peter Frampton recorded a few perfectly fine albums with his band Frampton's Camel, but it wasn't until some of those tracks were recorded at a live performance in San Francisco and released as Frampton Comes Alive! that he became a household name. Buoyant pop, sentimental ballads, arena rock--this album has it all. The double-LP package set sales records and contained three bona fide radio hits ("Baby, I Love Your Way," "Show Me the Way," and "Do You Feel Like We Do?"), one of which, shockingly enough, was over 14 minutes long. Eartha Kitt, a Seducer of Audiences, Dies at 81 New York Times By Rob Hoerburger December 25, 2008 Eartha Kitt, who purred and pounced her way across Broadway stages, recording studios and movie and television screens in a show-business career that lasted more than six decades, died on Thursday. She was 81 and lived in Connecticut. The cause was colon cancer, said her longtime publicist, Andrew E. Freedman. Ms. Kitt, who began performing in the late ’40s as a dancer in New York, went on to achieve success and acclaim in a variety of mediums long before other entertainment multitaskers like Julie Andrews, Barbra Streisand and Bette Midler. With her curvaceous frame and unabashed vocal come-ons, she was also, along with Lena Horne, among the first widely known African-American sex symbols. Orson Welles famously proclaimed her “the most exciting woman alive” in the early ’50s, apparently just after that excitement prompted him to bite her onstage during a performance of “Time Runs,” an adaptation of “Faust” in which Ms. Kitt played Helen of Troy. Ms. Kitt’s career-long persona, that of the seen-it-all sybarite, was set when she performed in Paris cabarets in her early 20s, singing songs that became her signatures, like “C’est Si Bon” and “Love for Sale. ” Returning to New York, she was cast on Broadway in “New Faces of 1952” and added another jewel to her vocal crown, “Monotonous” (“Traffic has been known to stop for me/Prices even rise and drop for me/Harry S. Truman plays bop for me/Monotonous, monotone-ous”). Brooks Atkinson wrote in The New York Times in May 1952, “Eartha Kitt not only looks incendiary, but she can make a song burst into flame. ” Shortly after that run, Ms. Kitt had her first best-selling albums and recorded her biggest hit, “Santa Baby,” whose precise, come-hither diction and vaguely foreign inflections (Ms. Kitt, a native of South Carolina, spoke four languages and sang in seven) proved that a vocal sizzle could be just as powerful as a bonfire. Though her record sales fell after the rise of rhythm and blues and rock ’n’ roll in the mid- and late ’50s, her singing style would later be the template for other singers with pillow-talky voices like Diana Ross (who has said she patterned her Supremes sound and look largely after Ms. Kitt), Janet Jackson and Madonna (who recorded a cover version of “Santa Baby” in 1987). Ms. Kitt would later call herself “the original material girl,” a reference not only to her stage creation and to Madonna but also to her string of romances with rich or famous men, including Welles, the cosmetics magnate Charles Revson and the banking heir John Barry Ryan 3rd. She was married to her one husband, Bill McDonald, a real-estate developer, from 1960 to 1965; their daughter, Kitt Shapiro, survives her, as do two grandchildren. From practically the beginning of her career, as critics gushed over Ms. Kitt, they also began to describe her in every feline term imaginable: her voice “purred” or “was like catnip”; she was a “sex kitten” who “slinked” or was “on the prowl” across the stage, sometimes “flashing her claws.” Her career has often been said to have had “nine lives.” Appropriately, she was tapped to play Catwoman in the 1960s TV series “Batman,” taking over the role from the leggier, lynxlike Julie Newmar and bringing to it a more feral, compact energy. Yet for all the camp appeal and sexually charged hauteur of Ms. Kitt’s cabaret act, she also played serious roles, appearing in the films “The Mark of the Hawk” with Sidney Poitier (1957) and “Anna Lucasta” (1959) with Sammy Davis Jr. She made numerous television appearances, including a guest spot on “I Spy” in 1965, which brought her her first Emmy nomination. For these performances Ms. Kitt likely drew on the hardship of her early life. She was born Eartha Mae Keith in North, S.C., on Jan. 17, 1927, a date she did not know until about 10 years ago, when she challenged students at Benedict College in Columbia, S.C., to find her birth certificate, and they did. She was the illegitimate child of a black Cherokee sharecropper mother and a white man about whom Ms. Kitt knew little. She worked in cotton fields and lived with a black family who, she said, abused her because she looked too white. “They called me yella gal,” Ms. Kitt said. At 8 she was sent to live in Harlem with an aunt, Marnie Kitt, who Ms. Kitt came to believe was really her biological mother. Though she was given piano and dance lessons, a pattern of abuse developed there as well: Ms. Kitt would be beaten, she would run away and then she would return. By her early teenage years she was working in a factory and sleeping in subways and on the roofs of unlocked buildings. Ed Anderson LTC (Ret.) U. S. Army Oree Dee Willis' roots run deep in Wilkes County.Georgia, Indeed, she is an Unsung Hero of Wilkes County. Distinguished African American educator, Oree Dee Willis was born March 22, 1922, in Grady Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia. Her parents, George Bennie Willis and Sarah Strickling Willis had moved from Wilkes County to Atlanta for a brief period. Shortly after her birth, they moved to Knoxville, Tennessee, to join other family and church members and to seek employment. When Oree Dee was six years old, her parents separated and she was brought back to Wilkes County to grow up in the home of her maternal grandmother, Mary Smith Stribling, along with four other cousins and four aunts and uncles. Her Grandma Mary was a midwife. She delivered hundreds of African American babies in the Tignall, Delhi, Sandtown, Danburg, and Washington communities in the 1930s, 40s and 50s including the writer of this article. Moreover, she provided home health care for scores of white mothers who had just given birth. Oree Dee discovered very early in life that she loved to learn. Even though the few books she and her classmates had at Pole Branch Baptist Church Elementary School were "hand me down" books from the white school in Tignall, she cherished them and absorbed every detail of every text book that was available to her. By the time she was in the second grade, Oree Dee had purposed in her heart that she would be a school teacher. She especially enjoyed attending Pole Branch Church School from first through ninth grade. It was located next to her home church, Pole Branch Baptist Church and was the ancestral church of her father's side of the family. OREE DE WILLIS Both the church and school had been founded by her great grandfather, Albert Willis, his sons and daughters and their families, and other African American men and women in the community. Her Grandpa Scott, and his brothers, Andrew Jackson, Will, Jonas, and others had, with their own hands, built the church and school she loved so much. She would go on to be a lifelong member of Pole Branch. Among the members of the church and school that positively influenced her was the church pastor, Rev. H. H. Hunter. Rev. E. R. McLendon replaced Rev. Hunter and he continued to encourage her and all the students to get all the education they could get, to use their heads, and to grow up and "be somebody." Rev. E. R. McLendon was the son of Rev. Toombs McLendon who had been the first pastor of Pole Branch. Rev. E. R. McLendon's mother was related to Oree Dee in that Toombs had married Fannie Willis, daughter of Oree Dee's great grandfather, Albert Willis. ALBERT WILLIS Others who encouraged and positively influenced Oree Dee during her formative years were her teachers Mary Smith and Minnie Lee Willis. Minnie Lee was married to Rev. James Walter "Son" Willis who was Oree Dee's father's first cousin. She really felt supported and challenged at Pole Branch Church School. The concept of "it takes a village to raise a child" was alive and well with her. She and all her classmates, especially the Willis children, were expected to study hard and to do well. Success stories about her late greatgrandfather Albert Willis also inspired Oree Dee. He had been born in 1834 in the shadows of Monticello, the Charlottesville, Virginia, home of Thomas Jefferson, who had died in 1826. Albert Willis had been sold away from his mother for $1,000.00 into slavery in 1845, when he was eleven years old to James Henry Willis, a large plantation owner in Delhi, Wilkes County, Georgia, whose family was formerly from the Charlottesville, Virginia area. Even as a young man, Grandpa Albert was a talented wood carver, as was his fellow Charlottesville native, Eston Hemings, son of Sally Hemings and Thomas Jefferson. Such was the Willis family's high regard for the wood carving talent of great-grandpa Albert that he was entrusted to delicately carve out the mantle above the fireplace in the James Henry Willis homehouse - a mantle that remains functional and decorative to this very day. In a conversation I had with Mary Sale Stennett, granddaughter of James Henry Willis, in the mid 1970s, she stated (with tears in her eyes) that all the Willis family loved great-grandpa Albert and that he was extremely talented as a wood carver. Now owned by an Atlanta medical doctor, the Willis Plantation homehouse where great-grandpa Albert grew up still stands on Delhi Road. The 1860 and 1880 Federal Census lists great-grandpa Albert's racial classificationas "mulatto" which indicated that he had a white father. In the James Henry Willis household he was first a house servant, then the personal servant of James Henry Willis. He was allowed to learn to read and write. I'm a 41 year old mother of four and I was NOT prepared to have another baby. This little surprise that has rocked my world is why I have not been around here much. I'm a mom, that's what I do! :) I am now almost 18 weeks along and we recently discovered that there might be some problems with the pregnancy. I have another appointment with the perinatal specialist tomorrow and I'm hoping to have more answers. These last couple of months have been a roller coaster ride for my entire family. My husband and I even started seeing a therapist to help us deal with what we have been going through regarding this pregnancy. I'm excited. My kids are thrilled. I just want everything to be okay. 365.3.76 almost home Our first overnight trip with Charlie was a success! Since we were in Alison's wedding, Cathy and Wes babysat him on Friday, and my mom watched him on Saturday (because they are awesome), and I pumped enough bottles so they could feed him. Originally I was just going to try and not miss a feeding, but that would've been nuts, and this ended up working out great. I did have to pump once at the wedding, but that was fine too - the event director at their wedding location even brought me a bucket of ice to keep the pumped milk cold. :) This whole weekend gave me some confidence about going back to work and continuing to breastfeed. I know it can be done - both of the photographers at the wedding breastfed their kids and chatted with me about it (one of them has nursed TWINS for 15 months!), but it's reassuring that Charlie took the bottles they gave him this weekend. and, he did great at the hotel! he slept pretty much like he does at home. It was really fun to get dressed up and be out and about with Jacob, and it was really nice to come back to the hotel and see our little guy. Taking Baby For A Walk Baby has yet to get a name that sticks, but is sometimes known as Emily Anna. She is breastfed mostly, a bit of a biter, and is partial to having her clothes changed often. She also sometimes has a sneaky bottle but doesn't seem to care for a dummy much. She isn't keen on being slung but does cosleep often. Settlements developed at Tiddington and Baginton and small walled towns at Alcester, Chesterton, and Mancetter. The pattern of rural settlement appears to have remained unchanged. No villas have so far been identified, and the normal unit must have remained the farmstead of Iron Age type, unaltered save that those who worked it now acquired Roman trinkets arid industrially produced pottery. A number of the enclosures discovered from the air have a surface scatter of Romano-British pottery, and many of them must be the sites of these native farms. The only hint of industries during the period are pottery kilns at Tiddington, Hartshill, and Fenny Compton, tile kilns at Rowington Green and Chase Wood near Kenilworth, and lead and iron smelting at Tiddington. This basically Iron Age rural economy must have survived the Roman withdrawal from Britain, and it was only with the arrival of the West Saxons in the region in the late c6 that a new economy was introduced. Of these pagan Saxons we know little, and they have left no visible monuments in the countryside, but their spread is marked by a series of flat cemeteries of extended inhumation and urned cremation burials (e.g. Chesterton, Churchover, Longbridge). Jagger 5 (3) The Hoylake and West Kirby War Memorial was unveiled on the 16th December 1922 and is located at Grange Hill near Hoylake. Charles Sargean tJagger was recommended for this commission by George Frampton . The memorial involves a colossal granite four sided obelisk with an arched top. It stands on a substantial base and has bronze figures on its west and east faces. The figure on the west face is that of a woman dressed in long ecclesiastical-style robes with a hood covering her head. The figure holds a wreath that is made up of thick twigs intertwined with poppies. From her wrists hang heavy chains, which we see to be a broken manacle. The woman's head rests on a cruciform pillow made up of lilies with a large nimbus behind. On her chest there is an oval form that contains a baby that clings to the woman. The baby looks down at the viewer through the wreath. The figure on the east face is a soldier shown standing legs astride, fully dressed in World War I battle gear, complete with gas mask bag, water bottle, putties and his helmet pushed off the back of his head. His rifle is held horizontally in front of him at waist height. It is a typical Jagger soldier-figure. Solid and robust, Jagger’s soldiers are certainly the sort you would want standing next to you in the trench, to be by your side when you “went over the top”. At his feet there is another helmet. Inlaid on the granite a plaque attached to the west face of the base reads: " At the call of King and country they left all that was dear to them, endured hardness, faced danger and finally passed out of the sight of men by the path of duty and self sacrifice, giving up their own lives that others might live in freedom let those who come after see to it that their names be not forgotten." (11) Hardwood Wood Pendant Nursing Teething Rings Front The wood we use is recovered locally. We save trees from wood chippers and fireplaces. Each pendant is hand shaped, and fashioned from odds and ends at the shop. Each one is as unique as you or I. The process starts when I select some left over wood from the scrap bins. It hardly seems right to call chunks of Cherry, Hickory, Walnut, Maple, Ash, and Oak "scrap"! I draw circles on the pieces according to the details of the grain. Then the circles are cut into disks, and holes are drilled just off-center. Then the sanding begins with 60 grit for shaping and goes all the way to 600 grit. After that, I soak, oven dry, sand, and repeat this cycle until soaking no longer brings up surface fibers, and I am using 1000 grit sand paper. Then, I rub the surface with another piece of smooth hardwood, and do one last soak to be sure that water doesn't much change the surface appearance or texture of the pendant. I rub each piece with Lansinoh 100% world's purest lanolin. I chose this oil as it is baby-safe, food and skin safe, will not go rancid, has no solvents or VOC's, has it's own anti-microbial properties (along with the natural anti-microbial properties of the wood!), and maintains the breath-ability, feel and integrity of the wood itself. It is finally hung on a piece of black silk ribbon tubing, so this wooden pendant can be worn both somewhat dressy, or very casual, and always be tasteful. 295: Zombie baby edited Friday March 12th I decided to make it look moreso. Isobel crawled in to bed with us a little later than last night, around 5:20, just before Brandi was supposed to go to work. When she left about an hour later Isobel started crying for mum. I hope this doesn't keep up as it doesn't bode well for her sleep over next week. She did really well previously at being with other people but she's teething now, still trying to cut that sixth tooth. We hung out at home until 10ish when we drove Sharron out to Langley for her weekend away. Isobel slept on the way there and while visiting got hissed at by Sharron's friends' cat. Hopefully this doesn't scare her away from kitties and towards the dog people. We headed back home and I tried to take a nap on the couch but it didn't work. We picked up Brandi at 3:30 and drove out to Steveston. In Steveston we played at the big playground and went for a tiny walk down to the toy shop. We picked up Isobel a little doctor playset for her to give Baby Emily checkups in case she's sick and came home. We watched Where the Wild Things are while eating dinner (chicken and crusty rolls) and put Isobel to bed. We played a bit more Final Fantasy 13 and went to bed. I woke up at 2:30 and have been up since then. I'll be going to bed soon I hope.
