I wonder if her parents intended that she be wearing pearls or if the photographer gave them to her as something to play with and keep her calm? It seems weird to have a baby in pearls .... maybe this was common? I don't know. A rare little thing to have found! Aboriginal Artists of the Nineteenth Century Sayers examines a considerable body of drawings produced by Aboriginal artists between 1803 and 1903. Often regarded as inauthentic art because of their stylistic borrowings and fluctuations, these objects are products of the interaction between Aboriginal society and the British colonizers. The largest group of drawings comes from three artists: Tommy McCrae, William Barak, and Ulladulla Mickey. Visually their drawings are varied, but they possess many of the aesthetic qualities which characterize contemporary Aboriginal art, displaying intense vitality and an acute understanding of flora and fauna. Flying With Kids: Safe and Sane Air Travel With Your Baby, Toddler or Young Child If you're reading this, you may be dreading an upcoming flight with your young child or thinking about taking one, but aren't sure you can handle it. I completely understand, but have no fear. Long haul flights were routine for us as we spent 7 years as expatriates. When my daughter was born in Hong Kong (7500 miles away from our families in California), we obviously had to fly her home for visits. I had anxiety about this for years before I was pregnant and I thought about canceling our first long haul flight trip multiple times. My newborn baby was fussier than most, had major acid reflux, I had to fly alone with her, and our journey was 24 hours door to door. We were just fine, in the end. With preparation, you will be, too. Since then, I’ve flown long haul and domestically with my daughter more times than I can count. I now enjoy the adventure with her, but getting to this point was not without challenges. I bought tons of useless gear and spent countless hours scouring the Internet for information. The purpose of this ebook is to share details both large and small to help you get from departure to destination without hiccups. I share how I plan my flights from scheduling to seat assignments. Does your baby need a bassinet? There are a few things you need to know that isn't information usually found on airline websites. I include tips to get you, your child and all of your gear through security and to the airplane. Speaking of gear, specific products have been very helpful to us. I'll tell you why and where to buy some of it. The most pressing issue parents seem to have is how to keep kids entertained and fuss free on the plane. Specific things worked for us and I developed a strategy for quieting meltdowns. It can also be tough to get kids on long haul flights to sleep and keep them (and, therefore, you) from getting severe jet lag. We received jet lag advice from medical professionals that does work. My daughter is usually over her jet lag by the second day. What you bring in your carry-on is key. To avoid stress, it's important to organize and pack it well. I'll tell you everything I bring onboard and keep within arms reach on the plane. There is nothing worse than having something you need in a bag in the overhead compartment, when the seat belt sign is on. Remember, if you request bulkhead seats you will not be able to store a bag at your feet. Other topics include tips for diapering on the plane, in flight meals, flying first or business class, and more. You'll also be able to receive quick answers to questions via our ongoing discussion on Twitter or on our Facebook page. There is helpful information in this ebook, regardless of how long your flight is. (17) America Today August 18, 2005 4 U.S. Soldiers Killed as the Violence Continues in Iraq By EDWARD WONG BAGHDAD, Iraq, Aug. 18 - Continued violence claimed the lives of four American soldiers today, the military said. They were killed when a roadside bomb exploded in the northern city of Samarra this morning. No other details were made available. Today's violence follows a deadly day in which three car bombs exploded in quick succession in and around a crowded bus station in Baghdad, killing at least 43 people, wounding 88 and paralyzing one of Iraq's most important transportation networks. The assault, the deadliest in a month, took place at the height of morning rush hour Wednesday at Iraq's equivalent of the Port Authority bus terminal in Manhattan. It appeared to be aimed at Shiite Arabs boarding buses and shared taxis bound for cities in the south, and further inflamed sectarian tensions. The attack also underscored the Sunni-led insurgency's ability to strike, seemingly with ease, at some of the most important infrastructure. The bombings coincided with the formal resumption of negotiations over the new constitution, which is now due by Monday, after the Parliament voted for a one-week extension of the deadline. The three major ethnic and sectarian groups in Iraq - the Sunni Arabs, Shiite Arabs and Kurds - remain deadlocked on fundamental issues that will shape the future, particularly the right to carve out autonomous regions. The Bush administration is putting enormous pressure on Iraqi leaders to complete a draft this week. The explosions on Wednesday began at 7:50 a.m., sending body parts and debris flying across the Nahda bus terminal in central Baghdad. Horrified survivors rushed in a wailing frenzy from the vast open-air lot. The Iraqi police quickly shut down the area and began moving through the charred hulks of buses, sifting through items that included a baby's milk bottle and bloody tatters of clothing. "There were a lot of bodies, a lot of smoke," said Faraj Lilo Anad, 37, the police officer in charge of security at the terminal. "When the explosion happened, I could feel myself flying. Then I landed on the ground. I said, 'Thank God I'm still alive.' " By noon, the morgue of a nearby hospital was overflowing with bodies, and new ones had to be stacked outside in the 120-degree heat. Because air travel is limited and expensive, many Iraqis use public buses to move around the country. Until now, there have been few attacks on the network, even though terrorists in Israel and Britain have carried out bus bombings. The buses at Nahda go to cities in the Kurdish north and Shiite-dominated south, while buses running to western Iraq, the heartland of the Sunni Arab insurgency, depart from a different station. The first bomb was packed into a car that had been parked in the corner of the station where many Shiites congregate to catch buses south, Mr. Anad said. The second car bomb exploded 10 minutes later right outside the terminal, as police and emergency workers were rushing to the scene. The third car bomb detonated at 8:45 a.m. by Al Kindi Hospital, where many of the victims from the first attacks were being taken, said the United States Army's Third Infantry Division, which is charged with controlling Baghdad. "When the first bombing happened, other cars here started exploding one by one," said Amar Thajil Mansour, 23, a worker in a clothing store outside the station. "There was yelling and crying from women and children running to safety. Most of the people here are Shiites. They're trying to kill Shiites." A poster of Moktada al-Sadr, the radical Shiite cleric, hung in the devastated corner of the bus station, near where the owner of a falafel stand had been shredded by flying shrapnel. The coordinated attack killed more people than any since July 16, when a suicide bomber blew up a fuel truck next to a Shiite mosque in Musayyib, 40 miles south of Baghdad. That incident ignited outrage among many Shiites and even prompted a rare denunciation from Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, the most revered Shiite cleric in Iraq. A senior Shiite politician said at the time that the ayatollah had urged the government to take steps to prevent "mass annihilation." Violence flared Wednesday elsewhere in Iraq. Insurgents killed six Iraqi soldiers driving to Kirkuk, in the north, a police official said. The soldiers were returning from a training camp and had been assigned to protect an oil pipeline that is frequently attacked. The American military said one of its soldiers was killed Tuesday by a roadside bomb in southwest Baghdad, and another was killed Monday in a drive-by shooting in Mosul, in the north. The military also said some Iraqi civilians were killed or injured when American forces attacked suspected insurgents from the air in Baghdad early Tuesday. In the battle, American helicopters "trac Day One: I Hope You Like Text Just a quick note: I've been reading Charlie Brooker's Screenburn book so you're basically in for a worse rip-off than that sandwich I bought in Heathrow. Well I made it here with an hour delay, all my baggage and a pair of aching shoulders and missing only the concept of time, the desire to travel ever again and a couple pints of blood. Blood? Blood. Can you believe I forgot how truly terrifying air travel actually is? I thought I'd convinced myself that I had no problem with flying until I looked down and realised the book I was holding was turning into papier mache in my sweaty, white knuckled grip. It doesn't help that when I look up I'm greeted by the face of a gurgling baby peering at me over the seat in front with an expression that I took to be 'Grow up you spineless simpleton'. Kids these days. I just need to take my mind off of the horrifying reality of the situation: I'm in a metallic death-tube, hurtling through the heavens, surrounded by people whom I will methodically kill in my mind each time they cough, sniff, snort, snore, murmur, chuckle and gurgle. Yeah, I'm looking at you, judgemental kid. Anyway, my only respite from these air-wasters is my music, pumped through my bliss-inducing, noise-cancelling earphones. But what happens at the two most traumatic points in any flight, take-off and landing? A powder-covered plank-faced lollipop on legs leans down and tells you that listening to Brian Eno could send everyone screaming to their deaths. Something more upbeat then? Apparently not. I would ask why they feel so threatened by my soothing music but I don't think I could stand the sight of watching the lollipop lady's head explode. Anyway when I finally did make it down to Terra Firma, I was still so incensed that my brain began to melt and leak out my nose. After offering up a few bottles of Le Phlegm Rouge to the porcelain deities (Oh Mr. Shanks, get those fear-mongering sky-walkers for the abominations they insist on looping through their woefully inadequate on-board entertainment system, etc.) I got picked up by my Mum and after a short but oh-so-comfortable bus journey went for a quick bite to eat. I had a yakisoba. It wasn't as good as mine, obviously, but it was 50p and came with the added bonus that I didn't have to cook it. And now I will sleep. Tomorrow, my shitty idea for New Year's, aka, 'Why I shouldn't be left alone with my thoughts in a narrow, airborne corridor filled with scum'. It is not a broad how-to and where-to travel book, it is specific to air travel. It is for the frequent flyer. People who often travel by air are usually flying for business. They have unique requirements that rarely occur to the holiday traveler. Frequent flyers need quick, comfortable and reliable transportation. While the flights are taking them to their business, the time in the air is not part of the business. To the business flyer, time is money. They need to get through the airport quickly, board the plane early, ride comfortably, save time by eating while flying, be able to use their computer or go through papers on the plane, get off the plane quickly, etc. That is what the Air Travel Handbook is about. Both will find it fun. *** As an author and professional speaker, Dan Poynter flies more than 6,000 miles/9,000 kms each week. The Love Dare Day by Day: A Year of Devotions for Couples Topping the New York Times list and already selling five million copies, The Love Dare has established itself as more than a book; it’s an unstoppable marriage movement. And like the husband in Fireproof (the film where The Love Dare originated), readers know this 40-day challenge to understand and practice unconditional love with their spouse need not end when the book does. With that in mind, The Love Dare Day by Day encourages and challenges couples toward new steps in faith and love with 365 marital encouragements, reminders, and action points worth repeating year after year. Unconditional love is eagerly promised at weddings, but rarely practiced in real life. As a result, romantic hopes are often replaced with disappointment in the home. But it doesn’t have to stay that way. Whether your marriage is hanging by a thread or healthy and strong, The Love Dare Day by Day is a journey you need to take. It’s time to learn the keys to finding true intimacy (7) Growing Story Invite Concept / Design / Illustration / Production & Assembly To celebrate the arrival of an avid reading couple’s first baby boy, I could not help but throw a children’s book themed shower. The challenge was to make the event and invite truly personal. Why not write, illustrate and design the invite to be a personalized mini children’s book in itself? I composed a delightful, singsong story and illustrated whimsical scenes to go along with the playful feel that made up, “The Growing Story: A Tale of the Growing Bachman Family”. The illustrations included where the couple first met, as well as their engagement and wedding stories. The vision for this piece was quite clear to me from the beginning. I didn’t want the point to be obvious to the viewer at first. I liked the idea of having the delightful “aha” surprise when they discover that the invite is for a baby shower on the last page of the story. The challenge was composing the actual story. Ultimately, I decided on a simple yet playful color scheme and illustration style to convey the carefree, playfulness of the parents-to-be. Taken together, it's a potent introduction to the specific terrain (geographical and emotional) of this brilliant writer. The set is anchored by Warner's deluxe two-disc treatment of A Streetcar Named Desire, which has copious extras (among them a fine 90-minute documentary about director Elia Kazan). The multi-Oscar-winning Streetcar is one of the better stage adaptations in film history, and it captures the electrifying Marlon Brando, re-creating his stage role, in the part that changed American acting: the brutish New Orleans sensualist Stanley Kowalski. Vivien Leigh won an Oscar opposite him, as the faded (except in her own mind) Southern belle Blanche DuBois, whose arrival in the Kowalski home leads to disaster. Kazan also directed Baby Doll, which Williams scripted from a couple of one-act plays. This outrageous sex comedy casts the excellent Carroll Baker as the 19-year-old wife of middle-aged Karl Malden, who anxiously awaits the day he can finally consummate his maddening marriage; immigrant cotton magnate Eli Wallach shows up at Malden's crumbling plantation house just in time to take the bloom off the rose, as it were. Famous for being condemned in 1956, Baby Doll remains a very modern (and gloriously dirty) movie. Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, directed by Richard Brooks, faithfully brings three of Williams's indelible characters to the screen, even if the script discreetly changes the original stage text: the hot Maggie the Cat (Elizabeth Taylor), her reluctant husband Brick (Paul Newman), and Brick's rich Big Daddy (Burl Ives). All three performers act the lights out. Sweet Bird of Youth reunites Paul Newman with director Brooks, and also showcases Geraldine Page's performance as an aging film star tagging along with young stud Newman to his Southern home town. Some of Williams' more depraved touches are toned down, but the milieu is unmistakable and the movie is intense. The Night of the Iguana gives Richard Burton perhaps his finest hour onscreen: as Williams' dissolute defrocked priest, playing tour guide in Puerto Vallarta to tour groups of nattering biddies. The movie has director John Huston's sympathy for life's losers, as well as a trio of women built to torment Burton's reverend: Ava Gardner, Deborah Kerr, and Sue Lyon. The Roman Spring of Mrs. Stone, based on Williams's novel, is not a great movie, but gives Vivien Leigh a good workout as a wounded actress dallying with Italian gigolo Warren Beatty. Tennessee Williams' South is a 1973 documentary featuring some marvelous observations from Williams, as he holds court for filmmaker Harry Rasky. It also has long scenes from his plays, enacted by good folks such as Maureen Stapleton, Colleen Dewhurst, and Burl Ives. Especially valuable is a Streetcar sequence with Jessica Tandy re-creating her original role as Blanche. Williams himself reads the narration from The Glass Menagerie, a privileged moment. This is not an exhaustive Williams set (Joseph Mankiewicz's Suddenly, Last Summer and Sidney Lumet's The Fugitive Kind are among the best Williams films), but it maps out the steamy, tortured landscape awfully well. --Robert Horton (18) 208/365 Day 208 2/16 Hold on, baby you're losing it. The water's high, you're jumping in to it and letting go. And no one knows that you cry but you don't tell anyone, that you might not be the golden one. And you're tied together with a smile but you're coming undone. Guess it's true that love is all you wanted cause you're giving it away like it's extra change. Hoping it will end up in his pocket but he leaves you out like a penny in the rain. Oh, cause it's not his price to pay, it's not his price to pay. Tied Together With A Smile- Taylor Swift This picture froze my legs :/ Anyway... I have so much work to do. I'm lazy. I'm really moody. 1 week and 3 days until Winter Congress! Washington D.C. (:<3 I'm super exciteddd. New kicks All at once Amelia's feet exploded two sizes. I felt like a bad mom because one day baby had shoes and the next day she didn't. Auntie Sarah came to the rescue with a pair that fit, but she needed just a few more. Once babies move from being babies to toddlers clothes and accessories seem to double in price. WTF? I was lucky here to find $10 All Star/Chuck Taylor's at Fred Meyer (a store I HATE). What little girl doesn't need herself a pair of black high tops? PS Jason had never heard new shoes called kicks. Old Trojan at Long Ashton - Bristol Trojan Limited was a motor vehicle manufacturer that produced a range of iconic products. Leslie Haywood Hounsfield moved to Vicarage Road, Croydon in 1914 and changed the name of his engineering business to Trojan Limited in the same year. The motor vehicle production for which Trojan became famous began when the company struck a deal with Leyland Motors. Leyland began producing the Trojan Utility Car in 1922, and the Trojan Light Van was introduced in 1924. The commercial vehicle side of the company was most successful at first. The vans were cheap for small businesses and adaptable for larger ones. Uniquely shaped vans were made for the big brands of the time. Cow and Gate baby foods had one shaped like a tin can, and the body of the Absolom tea company's custom-built vehicle looked like a giant tea pot! The vehicle-building side of the business moved to Purley Way, Croydon, in 1929 after the arrangement with Leyland Motors came to an end. Trojan stayed at this site until the 1970s. Like many of London's factories, Trojan's Purley Way site switched production to help with the war effort during the Second World War. It made trolley accumulators, which were used to start aircraft engines, as well as munitions and components. Post-war Trojan Ltd products were eccentric and glamorous. The Trojan works assembled Lambretta scooters and around 6,000 Trojan 200 bubble cars rolled off the Purley Way production line between 1961 and 1965. Collaborations with Elva and McLaren saw Trojan produce sports cars. The company even ran its own Formula 1 racing team for a year in 1973, but it ceased production soon afterwards. Sure; his feet are different from yours-- his feet are attached to a millionaire all-star, got drafted into the NBA straight out of high school, and they probably get hot oil massages from supermodels after every game. Ok, anymore comparing feet is just going to bum you (not to mention your feet) out. Your feet are similar to Garnett's in some ways, though. They need lots of support and traction on the court, and if you want them to perform their best, they demand cushioning and lots of it. Give your feet (almost) all of the advantages Garnett's have with the adidas A3 Garnett 3's patented cushioning and construction technology. The adidas A3 Garnett 3's durable support and lightweight cushioning will have your feet feeling (almost) like pros. Yeah, they'd prefer those hot oil massages, but you've gotta start somewhere. (17) baby poo; 11-24-05 - 06-08-06 i woke up this last thrusday morning after playing with all of the hams individually until 5am. Baby Poo was fine when i went to sleep. she had been playing on her wheel, eatting, drinking and other such hamster things. when i woke up she and Pixie needed more water by then, so i went and got it. but Baby Poo didn't stir to come get the water/pedialyte she loves so much. so i picked her up to show her she had more since i thought she was asleep. but she was too limp. at first i thought it was funny cause i thought she was being a sleepy head but then i realized, she couldn't open her eyes, and she wasn't moving. i checked futher and the only way she could move was by flopping her little body around. i had to force her eyes open to see what they were doing. by my own judgement, she'd had a stroke, seizure or maybe even a leaking anurysm. whatever it was, i could tell it was neurological, it was very serious, she wasn't going to recover from the state she was now in and it may be fatal. so i called the Vet and i told them i was coming in right away and they put her down after examining her. and they agreed with me. it looked to be neurological and they did their own tests and she wasn't showing signs of being about to reverse the state she was in. so now, my poor Baby Poo is gone along with the Papa Poo. i buried her in a big, very heavy, deep pot so the wicked little animals around here won't be able to knock it over or dig her up. i have planted fotget-me-knots on top. it will look very pretty witht he pot i chose because i had those flowers in mind from the begining. i will take a picture of the pot and then again when the flowers have grow and are very pretty which should be about a month - a month and a half from now. Baby Moc Taking a quick break from my China pictures to post this funny picture of Baby Moc...it just cracks me up! Baby Moc is wearing a hat that my mom knitted for her. The Very Hungry Caterpillar Board Book and Plush (Book&Toy) One of the best-selling children's books of all time, The Very Hungry Caterpillar has been delighting young readers for over thirty years. Now packaged as a board book with a new plush doll, this classic book will continue to introduce new generations of children to the magical world of Eric Carle. Eric Carle and Tomie dePaola: Author One-on-One Eric Carle is the creator, author, and illustrator of The Very Hungry Caterpillar and many other children’s books. Tomie dePaola is the author and illustrator of Strega Nona: Her Story and countless other books. They recently had a conversation about their careers as picture book authors. Tomie dePaola: When I was only four years old, I announced to my family in particular and to the world in general that I was going to become an artist, and write stories and draw pictures for books. I never swayed from that early declaration. I’ve always been curious to know, what inspired you to become a creator and illustrator of picture books? Eric Carle: My career began as a graphic designer and for a number of years I worked as an art director for an advertising agency in New York. In the mid 1960's Bill Martin, Jr. saw an ad of a red lobster that I had designed and asked me to illustrate his Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? Well, I was set on fire! I was so inspired by this book, and the opportunity to illustrate it changed my life. After that, I started to create my own books, both words and pictures, and really it was then that I had found my true course in life. Now, I have a question for you, Tomie. How would you describe your artistic style, and has it changed over time? Tomie dePaola: My illustration style is heavily influenced by folk art--strong simple shapes, bold lines, color, color, color and a deceptive simplicity. My style began to develop early in art school, and through the years, it hasn’t changed very much, but it has refined itself. How would you describe yours? Eric Carle: My aim with my work is to simplify and refine, be logical and harmonious. I like to use simple shapes, bright colors and a lot of white space. I write for the child inside of me. That is always where I begin. Tomie dePaola: I do, as well. The only audience I keep in mind is that four-year-old in me. People sometimes ask me what advice I would give to young artists. I always think of the wonderful advice I received from my twin cousins when they were in art school in the late '30s. They told me, “Practice, practice, practice and don’t copy.” Eric Carle: I often tell people about the four magic letters: DO IT. I want to be encouraging but I can only offer the example of my own experience, which is just one approach. There are many wonderful artists to learn about, which is important. But you must use your own imagination. You have to just do it. Tomie dePaola: How do you feel knowing that a copy of The Very Hungry Caterpillar is sold every 30 seconds, somewhere in the world? Eric Carle: It is hard for me, maybe for others too, to grasp this concept. But I am truly honored that my story is enjoyed by so many and that it is now being shared by a generation of parents who grew up with my book. How about your Strega Nona. She is one of your most popular characters. Can you share how she came to be? Tomie dePaola: In the ‘70s when I was teaching at a college, we were required to attend faculty meetings. I always sat in the back with a yellow legal pad. Everyone thought I was taking notes. At one meeting a doodle appeared of a little lady with a big nose and a big chin. I named her Strega Nona, and the rest is history. Speaking of history, how will you be celebrating the third annual Very Hungry Caterpillar Day this year? Eric Carle: On The Very Hungry Caterpillar Day, March 20th, I will probably be at home with my wife, Bobbie (I am a bit of a hermit, actually). But I will be saying a little toast to the caterpillar for whom I have a special place in my heart. And speaking of holidays, isn’t your favorite holiday Christmas. Do you have a special Christmas memory? Tomie dePaola: Christmas is my favorite holiday. My favorite Christmas was the one when I received tons and tons of art supplies: everything from an easel to paints, pads and pads of paper, and “how to draw” books. Found a butterfly plunger set I've been wanting and the daisy plunger set. Found some cute cupcake papers for jungle theme parties. I may have one coming up in Sept at the zoo. Got another large tip for decorating cupcakes, a different baby rattle cutter and a spade cutter. I have a card cake due on July 9th. Not crazy about the cutter and did not buy the clover one. I'm thinking i'll end up hand cutting some fondant. LOL and then the 3 clear things in front are a number mold, dot pattern and scroll patter. The Jungle The Jungle in the middle of Switzerland. Kiddopotamus SwaddleMe Microfleece, Small, Ivory Pediatricians recommend swaddling to comfort and soothe newborns, but loose blankets are difficult to keep snug. SwaddleMe wings have Velcro tabs, to wrap up your newborn and stay comfortably in place. As baby grows, wings readjust for a perfect fit. SwaddleMe wings are easily opened to prevent overheating, and the leg pouch can be popped down for a quick diaper checking or changing. SwaddleMe can also be used in the car seat, simply insert car seat harnesses through the access slits! Pediatricians have long advised parents to swaddle their newborn. The award-winning Kiddopotamus and Co SwaddleMe will help soothe your infant and reduce symptoms of colic by recreating the soothing snugness of the womb. Designed for babies from birth to three months old, this 100-microfleece cotton adjustable infant wrap helps your baby to rest or sleep safely and peacefully. The SwaddleMe Adjustable Infant Wrap offers: Soothes infants and reduces symptoms of colic. Helps babies sleep longer. Reduces the risk of SIDS. The leg pouch pops down easily with no need to unwrap baby's arms. Soothes Baby For Longer, Safer Sleep An iParenting Media Award winner, the SwaddleMe soothes infants and reduces symptoms of colic by recreating the snugness of the womb. It also can help babies sleep longer by cutting down on the incidents of the startle reflex. Most importantly, new research shows that the type of swaddling your baby will enjoy in the SwaddleMe can help diminish the risk of SIDS and promote better sleep when infants are on their backs. And a percentage of each SwaddleMe sold is donated to First Candle/SIDS Alliance to help babies survive and thrive, so this is a purchase you can feel good about. Extraordinary Comfort The SwaddleMe features soft fabric wings that hug your baby close and stay securely in place with self-fasteners to keep baby comfortably swaddled all night long. As baby grows, the wings adjust for a perfect, customized fit. A leg pouch pops down for quick diaper changes while leaving baby securely swaddled. There's also a convenient harness access slit that allows the SwaddleMe to be used in car seats and strollers. Please note: Size small is designed for babies six to 18 pounds or 19 to 26 inches. The SwaddleMe is also available in size large for babies 16 to 25 pounds or 26 to 31 inches. Pediatricians know that even the fussiest, wiggliest infants can settle down in minutes—or seconds—when swaddled. But parents know just how difficult it can be to trap those little octopuses in the very thing that’s supposed to calm them. Enter SwaddleMe! This handy little piece of ivory colored fleece allows parents to contain their newborn snugly (not tightly) with adjustable side wings and a leg pouch. Velcro tab closure allows for a good fit, even as baby grows. The leg pouch pops down for easy diaper checks and changes—all while baby’s arms remain securely wrapped. Winner of the iParenting Media Award, and featured in Parenting Magazine, August 2003. The incredibly soft 100% polyester microfleece is machine washable (read care instructions for specifics). Line dry. --Emilie Coulter Pediatricians know that swaddling babies has multiple benefits. It can calm a fussy infant in minutes, it can reduce colic by recreating the womb, it can ease startle reflex that wakes them, and it can even reduce the risk of SIDS by helping little ones sleep through the night. But those pediatricians aren’t the ones having to wrestle a wiggly infant into a swaddled state. Parents know how difficult it can be to accomplish this, especially with loose blankets. Luckily, Kiddopotamus has just the thing: their SwaddleMe adjustable wrap. This ingenious covering snugly-not tightly-holds baby through a system of self-fasteners that can adjust to provide a comfortable fit as baby grows. An easy, three-step process has baby bundled and calm in seconds. How it works Align baby’s shoulders with the contoured top of the open SwaddleMe and tuck their legs inside the leg pouch. Wrap the left wing over baby’s torso, tuck it around baby’s left arm, and attach the fabric fastener to the leg pouch. Place the right wing over the left and secure with fabric fasteners. NOTE: The fabric should never cover baby’s mouth or nose. The simplicity of SwaddleMe is enough to sell most parents, but Kiddopotamus went the extra mile on convenience, too. The leg pouch folds down for easy diaper checks and changes-while baby’s arms remain cozily secure. SwaddleMe has a harness slit on its back that allows it to be placed in car seats, strollers, and swings for babies on the move. Based on your location, or the time of year that baby will use SwaddleMe, the comfy contraption is available in three different fabrics-lightweight microfleece, cotton flannel, and knit cotton-and a slew of colors and patterns. Sizes The SwaddleMe is available in three, offering a perfect fit for whatever stage you need: preemie is for babies weighing 3-7 pounds; small is for babies weighing 7-14 pounds; and large is for babies weighing 15-22 pounds. These sizes are meant to be only a guideline as babies’ girth can vary. (18) Day 25: Caboodle, blanket, more baby clothes & supplies Yes, that is my infinitely hilarious Caboodle in the giveaway pile. It was enthusiastically adopted by the toddler, actually, and spent a week being variously carried around and ignored in the corner of the living room, and I finally decided enough is enough. Also given away: random bag full of Medela tubing and horns, a big orange tapestry blanket we never use, and a box full of baby clothes. Things are getting sparse and it is getting downright hard to find these last few days. Places I know I can revisit: cookbook shelf, the cupboard of baking dishes, husband's dresser...what else? My closet, to give away the nicer things I had originally earmarked to sell (where?)...or I could comb through my fabric stash and give away the upholstery-weight stuff we used as curtains in our old place, maybe assorted other bits and scraps I know won't get used any time soon. Also to note: day 25 is dropped off on Monday (Day 26) so I am running on a bit of a delay this week and will have to catch up at some point before the final day (Friday) with a double load. I wish I could say I'm saving something super meaningful or interesting for the final day's giveaway but I'm not. It's going to be a bit of a stretch to get there. 51/365: Baby GAP Pink 51/365 - Feb. 20, 2010: Baby GAP Pink ... I went to a baby shower today, and one of the things I gave the expectant mother, for her new baby, is this cute pink Baby GAP sweater. It's an 18-24 months, but I couldn't NOT get it, as I got it for a song and a dance -- almost 90% off. (My secret: There's a thrift store near me that sells tons of clothes. Some even with the tags still on. Including this adorable sweater. It still had the tag, and it was brand new. But I did not pay the brand new price. Seriously, whenever I have kids, many times they will be wearing thrift store finds. If you know how to shop, you can find some darling things!) My favorite part? The heart shape of the zipper pull. TOO adorable! (Post processed in Lightroom using preset "Dark Dreamly 5.") The Yogurt Bible (...Bible (Robert Rose)) Easy-to-make recipes for great homemade yogurt that is healthy and delicious. Making yogurt at home is surprisingly easy, and these homemade versions taste so much better than any brand available from a store. Perhaps most importantly, the home cook can control all of the ingredients, from organic cow's milk and soy milk from a farmer's market to ingredients found at a health food store or local grocer. Pat Crocker's recipes cover every taste and variation, from the sweetness to the thickness. The home cook needs just three key elements to get started: fresh milk (or other liquid), live bacterial culture and temperature control. The only equipment needed are a stainless steel saucepan, a thermometer and a constant heat source or an electric yogurt maker. The Yogurt Bible features 175 recipes: 35 stand-alone yogurt recipes followed by recipes that feature yogurt as a main ingredient or topping. These recipes provide endless ways to incorporate delicious yogurt into a diet or family regimen. The book features the basic method for lower-fat milk, soy milk, cultured rice milk, nut milk, fruit milk and coconut milk yogurts along with recipes for: French vanilla yogurt Strawberry yogurt Chocolate yogurt Caramelized pear and onion flatbread Tunisian carrot feta salad Mushroom and artichoke risone Zucchini and leek gratin Whitefish and vegetables with curry sauce in parchment Shrimp Creole Seared scallops in mushroom yogurt sauce Fettuccine with crab and shrimp sauce The Yogurt Bible proves that making yogurt at home is easy, fun and satisfying, and the results are very healthy -- easily replacing commercial, higher-fat items such as sour cream, mayonnaise and cream cheese. (20100915) (14) Cerita pelamin, calcium&yogurt Semalam masa dok godek2 folder mypicture, terjumpa gambar2 kahwin ni, so saja2 laa edit untuk dibuat entry baru. See, bila time rajin tu, banyak bukan main lagi upload pictures. Tapi, bila datang malas tu, lamaaaa baru nak update, hehe... Mula2 mai nak cerita pasal PELAMIN. Yang tema warna kuning+emas tu pelamin masa kenduri sebelah perempuan ie me. Sementara yang biru itu sebelah myLove. Masa buat preparation nak kahwin tu, salah satu permintaan I, I tak nak pelamin ada kerusi, cukuplah duduk bersimpuh atas simple stage. Tapi few days before nak pilih pelamin, abah kata kawan abah nak bagi special course untuk pelamin la pulak, So, nak tak nak, kena jugak pilih pelamin lengkap. Adoi laa, kalau kata tak nak, macam kurang sopan la pulak kan, orang dah offer nak bagi, jual mahal pulak. So itu laa hasil dari pilihan I. Bukan kami bersanding pun, duduk atas tu untuk sesi bergambar saja. Tak ada acara renjis merenjis pun. MyLove pulak, pada mulanya memang myLove kata tak ada pelamin2 ni. Tapi my parents in law beriya2 nak buat majlis jadi best, yer laa, myLove anak bongsu, kakak dan abangnya dah kahwin, dia yang last, so mesti laa my pil nak buat yang terbaik kan. Hasilnya jadi laa pelamin cute tu, hehe, ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ok next, lets share an info about CALCIUM and YOGURT... Calcium is well known as one of the most important nutrition for women. It doesn't mean that men do not need it, but since women get pregnant and nursing their babies, they really need calcium in a big amount. Pengambilan kalsium ni boleh diibaratkan seperti akaun bank, yang sejak kecil kita debitkan ke dalam tubuh sehingga laa bila kita hamil, our savings dikreditkan dengan banyaknya. Kerana itulah, amat penting untuk kita sebagai kaum wanita untuk sentiasa peka dengan pengambilan kalsium dalam diet harian kita. Faham yer puan2? hehe Why do you need calcium when you are pregnant? It is because your developing baby needs calcium to grow strong bones and teeth, a healthy heart, nerves, and muscles, and to develop normal heart rhythm and blood clotting abilities. If you don't get enough calcium in your diet, your baby will leach it from your bones, which may impair your own health later on. Before, during, and after pregnancy you need 1,000 mg a day, because your body can't absorb much more than that amount. Even after your baby's born and you're finished nursing, keep paying attention to your calcium intake because you need the mineral to help ward off osteoporosis (bone loss) later in life. Selalunya bila disebut kalsium, kita bayangkan susu. Sebenarnya, masih terlalu banyak sumber kalsium yang ada, so if you don't like milk, don't worry, you still have a lot of options... For example, other dairy products, low-fat yogurt, cottage cheese, calcium-fortified orange juice, calcium-fortified bread, sardines, Gruyere cheese, canned salmon, cheddar cheese, firm tofu, corn tortillas, boiled turnip greens and many more. As we know, pregnant ladies need other vitamins and minerals too, and eating our daily diet somehow will not help us to get all the nutritions. We have a solution for that, it is SUPPLEMENT. Hooray! Talking about yogurt. Do you like yogurt? Me love it so much. Masa pregnantkan Rafiqh, everyday I must eat yogurt. It was one of the way to consume calcium as well. But at that time, I didn't know the benefits of yogurt except for the calcium. Until one day, I watched Malaysia Hari Ini, they invited a doctor to talk about ELERGY. The doctor said, pregnant ladies should eat a lot of yogurt in order to prevent their babies from any alergy. Yeah that's right I guess. I think it works on me, I mean my baby. Since Rafiqh was born till today, alhamdulillah he has no health problem. Dia tak pernah demam, selsema, batuk, gatal2 atau apa2 saja laa. Even though masa myLove and I demam and selsema pun, he remains to be healthy... And the most important is I hope Rafiqh tak mewarisi kulit I yang agak sensitif ni... Oh ya, tak lama lagi Rafiqh pun dah boleh makan yogurt. Plain-yogurt... When I say shotgun, you say wedding - 01/04/10 - Day 4 Valerie: Aileen loves where I work. It's even the first place she ever saw me. But that's another story for another time. Aileen's definitely the sweetest ever. She stays on the phone with me while I drive to work, waits while I fight for parking, then talks to me while I walk over to being my shift. She even wishes me a great shift and tells me how she'll be thinking of me while I work. I melt every time and I begin work with a smile on my face. I always wonder what Aileen does while I'm working. However, I do know that she's thinking about me because I'll get texts that say "I miss you" or "I'm thinking of you" and it makes me so much happier about being at work. I always feel bad because sometimes I don't have time to take my ten minute breaks so I end up calling after I'm off, even if I tell her I still get a ten so I can call her soon. I always feel terrible about it, but I'm so lucky that she understands and stands by me no matter what. She really is amazing. Although I don't like that work keeps me away from Aileen, I can at least say that I really enjoy my job. It's fun and easy-going. It gets hectic at times, but I like the challenge. Wait. Did I just describe Aileen? ... I'm joking, baby! I get so excited when I clock off because I finally get to be with my baby love. She's always there to ask me about my day at work and even lets me vent all the craziness that goes on. She stays on the phone with me while I drive home. Once I'm home, we get in bed and we talk about anything and everything. We connect with each other on so many levels and I love every bit of it. She recently bought herself a book that she reads to me every night. She thinks I fall asleep, but I'm not sleeping! I ask her to summarize it because I have a hard time understanding what's going on. She's the reason why I fall asleep each and every night with a smile on my face. Aileen: I love asking Valerie questions about her job. Secretly I am trying to convince her to get me an interview. I really do not give her enough credit for what she does at fruit-concoction heaven. However, I am aware that I probably love it more than if it were my own job. Going back to the interview comment, I also like to come up with hypothetical answers to questions they may ask. For example: I am asked what my favorite smoothie is. A person who is taking her interview seriously would answer Strawberry’s wild. The reason being it’s a popular smoothie and who can go wrong with strawberries. Yeah well its actually boring and a very brown nosy move. I would answer with Aloha Pineapple, no frozen yogurt, sub pineapple sherbet. Yes, I am aware that flavor is also popular, however, I know my substitutions, thanks to Valerie, and my interviewer would be far more impressed with my knowledge of their products. When Valerie is working I usually start cleaning out my room. Not to actually clean it, but to find anything she might enjoy seeing. I love finding pictures of myself when I thought I was a punk. Black t-shirts and dickie pants definitely certify you as a rebel. As I searched through all of my junk piles I realized I have probably showed her everything there is to see. For that particular reason, I stopped cleaning my room and now it’s messier than it was before, and no, I don’t intend on cleaning it tonight. Although my day was not as interesting without Valerie, I love that we can still share something together. Even if we are not physically next to each other, we have found a way to still share an activity. I recently purchased Invisible Monsters and I have started reading two chapters to Valerie every night. I know I probably read fast and my voice is monotone, but I enjoy summarizing what I have just read to Valerie when she doesn’t want to admit she fell asleep. Isn’t she the cutest? when can my baby have yogurt Homemade yogurt might sound like a tedious process, but not with this electric yogurt maker. Enjoy your favorite flavor, made fresh at home with little fuss and preparation. The entire process takes less than 12 hours and works while you move on to other activities. The yogurt maker includes seven 6-ounce glass jars with lids so you can make a different flavor in each! An indicator keeps time of the progress.
