Asian Fishing Cat
This might look like a big house cat or moggy - but its not!
This is a quite interesting view of the Asian Fishing Cat, at Melbourne Zoo.
The light was very poor, but I was able to almost get rid of the cage wire from the photos.
It seems to say, "You looking at me?"
The cat was indeed typical of all cats - sleeping, curled up in what sunlight there was.
That was fortunate as it was at the back of its enclosure - enabling me to focus better and take out the cage.
The Fishing Cat (Prionailurus viverrinus) is a medium-sized cat whose habitat range extends through Indochina, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Sumatra and Java. Its fur has an olive-grey color and dark spots roughly arranged in longitudinal stripes.[3] The face has a distinctly flat-nosed appearance. The size is variable; while in India it is 80 cm, or 32 in, (and 30 cm, 12 in, tail), in Indonesia, it is only 65 cm, or 26 in, (25 cm, 10 in, tall). Indian individuals usually range up to 11.7 kg (26 lbs), while in Indonesia common weights are approximately 6 kg (13 lbs). They are stocky of build with medium short legs, and a short muscular tail of one half to one third of their head and body length.[3]
Like its closest relative, the Leopard Cat, the Fishing Cat lives along rivers, brooks and mangrove swamps. It is perhaps better adapted to this habitat, since it swims often and skillfully.
As the name implies, fish is the main prey of this cat, of which it hunts about 10 different species. It also hunts other aquatic animals such as frogs or crayfish, and terrestrial animals such as rodents and birds. The inter-digital webs on its paws help the cat gain better traction in muddy environments and water, like other mammals in semi-aquatic environments.
The Fishing Cat has unique physical features well adapted for surviving in a wetland environment. They are powerful swimmers with a double layer of fur and webbed rear feet and partially webbed front feet with exceptionally long toes & claws which they use like fishing hooks to snag a meal much like the American River Otter. Fishing Cats are difficult to observe in the wild but have been seen hanging over rivers and streams hovering on tree branches or rock formations ready and waiting to take a fish as "catch of the day". They are excellent divers and even hunt with their head completely submerged.
Fishing Cats claws resemble those of the Cheetah, as neither cat's claws have full sheaths so they are partially visible even when retracted. The elongated claws help them hold onto slippery aquatic prey like fish, frogs, toads, snails and crustaceans. Fishing Cats usually hunt by the light of day and also make small birds, mammals, snakes and domestic livestock part of their diet when available. Native to Southeast Asia ranging through Indochina, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Sumatra and Java they blend into the wetland rainforest habitat with a coat of olive brown color and rows of parallel spots that sometimes merge to form stripes. Face markings are distinguished - two pure white longitudinal stripes extending across the forehead running to the inner corner of their eyes. Fishing Cats are stout bodied, with a broad head and a short tail ringed in black and ending in a black tip.
First described by scientists in 1833, this cat was given the species name "viverrina" because its slim line body contour with spot and striped pattern was so similar to that of the civet which occupies the same territory. Unfortunately, their wetland territory is disappearing at an alarming rate with over 50% destruction of their Asian range under threat of human encroachment and development. Both animals share the dismal fate of being considered "food items" throughout much of their range and pelts taken by poachers are found in Asian markets. They are also trapped or eliminated for taking domestic livestock which also places them in danger. Although considered somewhat common throughout their range from India to Southeast Asia, factual field studies are lacking.
The Fishing Cat was only recently added to the SSP Species Survival Plan Program in an effort to coordinate captive breeding efforts to preserve this endangered species. Protection is offered to the Fishing Cat over most of its range with the exception of Bhutan, Malaysia and Vietnam and they are protected from trade being placed on CITES Appendix II and listed by IUCN - World Conservation Union as and Lower Risk/Near Threatened.

Finding a foundation that flatters, brightens, hides and highlights has been my life’s work.
I have unwittingly gone for too grey, too dark, too light, and, my real Achilles heel, too shiny.
I kid you not, in the deep recesses of my cupboard, there is a make up bag full of foundations that simply looked better under the shop’s flattering light.
Rimmel, Mac, Max Factor, Estee Lauder, I could go on. They’ve all failed me under the harshest conditions (basically a long car journey on a summer’s day).
Now another problem I’ll share is a tad controversial, but I’m sure we’ve all been there. When I present myself to any beauty counter, the consultant, upon the sight of Asian skin, goes into pilot mode and heads for the deepest, darkest mahogany/coffee coloured foundation in stock. Needless to say, it’s not a good match.
Anyway, in recent days I have stumbled upon a minor miracle, in the shape of Urban Decay’s Surreal Skin cream to powder. Prior to this purchase I have never actually even tried Urban Decay before. In fact, with its branding of skulls, butterflies, camels and dandelions, I always thought it was rather, well, chavvy. But beneath the awful design lies a flawless foundation, which after one outing, seems to have struck the balance of highlighting without frightening. Plus, as it sets as a powder, it doesn’t have the shiny effect left by other foundations I’ve tried.
For now I’m happy with it, but I’m yet to embark on the acid test of a long journey on a hot day, let’s hope there’s a wedding to attend soon.
So, given my relentless trial and error when searching for a foundation, I would impart following tips:
1) Always try before you buy – a smudge across the back of the hand will not do.
2) Never buy the same day – the beauty counter’s light is always flattering, so wait until you get home, check in the mirror and consult others before making that important decision.
3) Don’t be cajoled by the pushy consultant – if they choose a colour that’s wrong for you, say so and go for a better shade.
4) Ask you friends – I found out about Urban Decay through a friend, and don’t think I would have looked there otherwise. So ask others what works for them.
