We staged it outside using the existing patio furniture that we jazzed up using indoor china, linens and pillows. The centerpiece is two teapots from Pier One ($7/each) filled with purple and yellow flowers from the grocery store. Fresh strawberries and cupcakes finish off the centerpiece. Plates are are mix of steeply discounted white china from HomeGoods and Ikea platters. The glasses are Vallerysthal glass that I collect. The teaset is from a flea market that was less than $20. But the new tenant of 1-A Park Road is no longer expected any day soon. This luxurious home in the quiet suburbs of Islamabad, less than six weeks from completion, has been built by Pervez Musharraf as a retirement home for himself and his wife. What he had probably not expected when he commissioned the house four years ago was that he might need it as a bolt-hole should his opponents force him from office. Amid mounting speculation as to whether Mr Musharraf will resign or fight impeachment charges, there has been much talk as to where the President will live. But yesterday it was reported that Mr Musharraf was insisting that should he stand down, he wishes to retire to his Mediterranean-style home set in five acres of land. If he decides to stay, it will be no surprise to Hammad Husain, the architect commissioned by Mr Musharraf. Yesterday, standing on the driveway of the house in Chak Shahzad, Mr Husain outlined the details of the home that will include a fish-pond, a walking track and an extraordinary amount of barbed wire. "Most of what you see is his input, along with mine," said Mr Husain, as a team of labourers slaved beneath the blistering sun. "He has gone into the detail, he has been part of it and comes here to look at things." Mr Husain, a family friend of the Musharrafs, said the President's wife, Sehba, had chosen the curtains and fittings for the house, estimated at ?1.25m. Mr Husain said Mr Musharraf had a taste for greenery and that every room in the house was designed to have a view of the surrounding countryside. As I sat here to have this photo taken, my fingers automatically went to the keys which begin Albinoni`s great work. You may not know this but my mother was a concert pianist and she could play any piece of music she was asked. I recall my childhood days when I would lie on my bed listening to mother below as she would play over and over again, practising prior to a performance. She played Rachmaninov, Greigs piano concerto, Tchaikovskys piano concerto and her favourite composer was Handel. I have never been ever able to play like she did. I have to learn a piece of music, takes me ages to do so but as mother used to say, it didnt matter really as it was the pleasure of it. One day I would like a piano again. Mother had to give up playing a few years before she died as she had arthritis yet she was ok about that as to qoute "Ive played all my life". Grandfather's Camera A number of years ago, my mom gave me my grandfather's photography equipment. My grandfather was a photographer who also hand-painted his portraits. In addition, he was a carpenter who built furniture on which he created artistic relief carvings. Unfortunately, he died when I was 2 and I never got a chance to know him well. I placed his equipment in a box a few years ago and forgot about it. Recently, I decided to pull this stuff back out and see what I could learn about it, with the hopes of eventually shooting with the equipment. The camera is an Agfa Ventura 66 Deluxe, which is a medium format folder that shoots 6X6 negatives (square format). I knew nothing about it, so I did some research, but couldn't find a lot online. What I have discovered is that this camera was introduced either in the late 40's or early 50's and is German-made. It is fitted with a top-of-the-line 4 element, coated, Tessar-type, Solinar lens, set within a deluxe 9 speed Compur-Rapid shutter assembly. It was Agfa's first post-war addition to the premium folder market and was a direct competitor to the Voigtlander Perkeo II and the Zeiss-Ikon Ikonta. None of this means a lot to me as I shoot with a Canon 12.2mp XSi Rebel DSLR. Before that, I shot 35mm film with Nikon cameras primarily. I'm not really familar with medium-format cameras, other than I know that they take great pictures on a much larger negative than does a 35mm camera. But, I'm facinated with this camera and would like to figure out if it even works. I've been studying it to determine how it operates. So far, I've discovered that the shutter is fully operational (must be cocked) and the aperature control seems to work fine. Beyond that, I'm not really sure. If anyone has any ideas about this camera, I'm all ears. Also, what brand of film is recommended and where do I get it? I've also included my grandfather's GE light meter in the shot, as well as the leather cases. This stuff is pretty facinating. Update: It appears that the lens is not the Solinar model, but rather the 3 glass element Apotar lens. The pictures focus on rural areas and farm labor, as well as aspects of World War II mobilization, including factories, railroads, aviation training, and women working. In 1997, the National Park Service acquired the main buildings and surrounding land of Oakland. Since then, the Cane River Creole National Historical Park has progressed to advanced stages to preserve and conserve the buildings, furniture, oil paintings, textiles, and history of the home as it was at the end of the plantation era in the 1960s. The plantation includes interpretation of the history of free blacks and Creoles of color who lived and worked on the plantation for nearly 100 years after the American Civil War and Emancipation. They were all integral to the region's community life. The community has strongly associated the plantation with the Prud'homme family. The original owners, Jean-Pierre Emanuel Prud'homme and his wife Marie Catherine Lambre Prud'homme, completed building Oakland in 1821. The family tradition claims that Oakland was one of the first plantations to grow cotton on a large scale. They also had farm animals (made evident by extant buildings such as the dipping vat, the turkey shed, the mule barn, two pigeonniers and several chicken coops) and other crops. The Prudhommes also owned and operated a store on the property, which was the site of the Bermuda US Post Office for many years. The farm flourished in the late 1800s. J. Let's Play House The last few weeks of yard 'sailing' turned up some unbelievable vintage finds. I have wanted to share them so much in a nice photo but I am short on time and good lighting. The furniture is not a garish orange but a deep lovely red. Towards the end of yard sale season we happened upon an unadvertised sale. The seller said she was trying to get rid of stuff that had not sold from earlier sales. On the floor in a shopping bag I found this furniture. I asked, "How much is this?". I did not say OH MY GAWD how much is this to die for unbelievable, cute, awesome vintage furniture. She said, "fifteen dollars." I set the bag up on a table and started pulling things out to see if I wanted to pay fifteen dollars. And OMG my heart started pounding, I felt faint, I was going into an altered state. She said, "I think there is some old stuff in there." I didn't look at it all and I said, "Will you take ten?" and she said yes. When we got home I took each piece out and kept saying aloud to anyone in the universe who could tune in on my excitement, "OMG this is so cute" I said this and more 57 times as I ooohhhed and awwwed over the 57 pieces in the bag. And there was some Barbie furniture and stuff TOO. There is a little sewing machine cabinet, the top lifts up, the drawers pull out and the treadle moves but the sewing machine was missing....If you are close by "come play house."
