As a student at the University of Oregon studying interior architecture, I was fortunate to take a furniture design studio. The project for the Winter 2011 term was a bit different than most, we were to design a modular seating system for Lawrence Hall, the building the interior architecture program calls home. This project was about providing an interesting, new approach to group seating, bridging a gap between art and furniture design.
Starting with 4 groups and 4 different ideas, this idea was formed, to create a mountain/pyramid type seating system.
Most of us were new to woodworking and many of the shop tools. The angles proved to be quite difficult, but we certainly took it on in full force and created this prototype out of hickory plywood in 5 weeks.
