Still on Murfreesboro Rd, coming into LaVergne, which is between Nashville and Smyrna. The mayor of LaVergne, which is a small town of about 20,000 people, closed the entire city yesterday because it was completely impassable. It doesn't appear to be a whole lot better today!!

Yet another self portrait with yet another chair

Sorry, but I've been SUCH a lazybum with my uploads recently. We've been doing some hard-hitting furniture shopping the past few days, with good experiences (the nice lady at Ethan Allen who worked with us on whittling down what we wanted) and bad experiences (Nasty-icky Ashley's furniture with veneer that was already coming off the furniture and it wasn't even out of the showroom).

So, we've determined that new furniture isn't what we're looking for (I already knew this, but my brother hadn't figured that out). So the past few days we've been hitting antique stores everywhere.

We haven't come back with furniture, but we sure have found a lot of other junk we like. A box full of old cameras - which led to the discovery of the film-camera-that-makes-me-swoon (the Kodak Beau Brownie. Look it up. I'm in love.) and some frames and other things that are no where near what we're actually needing right now.

Did find, however, a really neat nineteenth century hook-organizer-hanger-upper thing that I'm madly in love with. Part of that utilitarian side of the nineteenth century that hardly anyone bothers to think about these days. Will photograph it soon and post a shot of it. But right now, I need to catch up on my 365 shots. Ack

An Adirondack chair or Muskoka chair is a type of chair favored in rural, outdoor settings. The precursor to today's Adirondack chair was designed by Thomas Lee in 1903. He was on vacation in Westport, New York, in the heart of the Adirondack Mountains, and needed outdoor chairs for his summer home. He tested the first designs on his family. The name Muskoka was adopted from the municipality of Muskoka, Ontario,[1][2] a cottage country area north of Toronto.

The original Adirondack chair was made with eleven pieces of wood, cut from a single board. It had a straight back and seat, which were set at a slant to sit better on the steep mountain inclines of the area. It also featured wide armrests, which became a hallmark of the Adirondack chair.

Today's Adirondack chairs usually feature a rounded back and contoured seat. The style has also been translated to other pieces of furniture, from gliders to love seats. Some modern Adirondack chairs are made out of plastic lumber or engineered wood instead of wood.

After arriving at a final design for the "Westport plank chair," Lee offered it to Harry Bunnell, a carpenter friend in Westport, who was in need of a winter income. Bunnell quickly realized the chair was the perfect item to sell to Westport's summer residents, and apparently without asking Lee's permission, Bunnell filed for and received patent 794,777 in 1905.[3] Bunnell manufactured his plank chairs for the next twenty years. His "Westport chairs" were all signed and made of hemlock in green or medium dark brown. The modern name refers to the Adirondack Mountains, which Westport is near.

Adirondack chairs are becoming popular as outdoor seating at cafes because the flat armrests are suitable for setting food and beverages on, making it possible to provide individual seating without tables.

They are commonly made as school projects around the world.

Adirondacking is a term used in the southern U.S. to describe public picnics at which people sit primarily in Adirondack chairs. It is also used to describe using public Adirondack-chair displays outside home-improvement and grocery stores as a leisure break while shopping.

Chassis 48771, 1938: After extensive research this car was discovered to be the ‘million franc’ prize race car driven by Rene Dreyfus who won the Grand Prix de Pau in 1938. The ‘Prix du Million’ was an effort by the French government to induce French automobile manufactures to develop a car that would beat the Germans who dominated racing at the time. The prize was a million francs. When World War II broke out the car was disassembled and hidden from the invading Germans. After it was reassembled the identity of the car was lost. This car was purchased by Jim Hull and Peter Mullin. Subsequent research revealed this particular car was the Million Franc Delahaye. The announcement of the cars fascinating past was made by Peter Mullin at the 2006 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.

What is tagging?

Tagging is not an art form or about expressing oneself. It is vandalism and the destruction of private and public property. Tagging is any unauthorized marking, etching, scratching, drawing, painting or defacing of any surface of public, private, real or personal property.

Tagging causes blight in our community resulting in a genuine threat to the quality of life, incalculable economic losses to businesses, and can lead to the general deterioration of the area in which you live or work. The eradication of graffiti is a huge drain on the City’s resources in both cost and manpower. In most cases, the difference between graffiti being art or a crime is PERMISSION!

Is your child a tagger?

Taggers come from every race and socio-economic background. Although most taggers are males there are female taggers. Some indicators that your child may be a tagger are:

Your child is in the age group statistically associated with tagging, ages 12-18.
Your child has tagging written on their clothing such as their shoes or inside their baseball cap, schoolbooks, notebooks, backpacks, cd covers, and on their bedroom furniture or walls.
Your child frequently wears baggy pants or carries a large backpack. These are used to carry cans of spray-paint, various colors and types of magic markers, etching tools, slap tags and cameras to take photos of their taggings. The clothes and backpack may be paint stained.
Your child has large quantities of magic markers in various colors, types and sizes, spray-paint cans, shoe polish containers, or dot markers used to mark bingo cards.
Your child has or carries tools used for etching glass or mirror surfaces such as spark plug porcelain, drill bits, screwdrivers with a sharpened tip, small rocks, or any other type of sharp instrument.
Your child has large quantities of “Hello My Name Is” stickers, priority mail stickers, or number or letter stickers. These stickers may have drawings or a tagging moniker written on them. These stickers are used to “slap tag.” They are slapped upon a surface and are difficult to remove and generally leave a residue.
Your child has the same moniker or set of letters written repeatedly on the above-described material. This may be your child’s tagging moniker and tagging crew’s initials.

Your child has the same tagging on their schoolbooks, clothing or in their bedroom that you see in your neighborhood or surrounding area. Taggers generally tag in or near their own neighborhoods.
Your child associates with other people who exhibit these same traits. These other people may be members of your child’s “tagging crew.”

Work Rest and Play Desk Set

A very rare find indeed. A double kid's school desk from an old village school in Northumberland. It has the dents and marks from previous users which all add to it's charm. Finished in matte dark ash grey and red paints, specially mixed for us in France it now would add charm to any child's bedroom. The little vintage chair was given to us by a very good friend in Paris.

What do children do in their bedrooms - Work, Rest and Play we thought, so we finished one of the desk lids with a blackboard paint for Play, one for Work and the little chair for Rest. The stencilled letters were created by using vintage brass stencils. (Note: The chair seat is a little low to be used to the desk so is strictly for resting only.)

This is Ron

It didn't take long for me to make a couple of nonhuman friends on the lake. This gregarious little green heron ( he is ron - get it? Ryanne would've hated that joke) is always hanging around my shoreline in the mornings and evenings scouring the area for minnows and he has very little fear of me. He wasn't too sure about me at first but when I caught the world's smallest bluegill the other day, I tossed it on the grass near him and since then, he is an almost constant companion. He is also one of the myriad of reasons that the new house is far from being a summer home anymore. The lake is now where I live and the house in the Chicago area will be sold as soon as I can get it all fixed up and find a buyer - something that will take some time but it will happen as soon as the housing market gets its head out of its own ass.

I apologize for not posting or commenting much lately. Between working on the landscaping that's been a bit neglected for a couple of years and trying to get a decision made on the new roof I've barely had enough time to work much less do much flickring. However, as of today, I think I've gotten the requisite number of estimates for the repairs covered, my internet is now connected, and I've taught all of the trees how not to hit their owner in the head when he's mowing. We also now have a totally space-age washer and dryer and MK is earnestly hunting down the appropriate furniture so everything is on track and I can breath for a little bit.

Over the last several days, I have found out that TV and web surfing are so easily replaced with deck sitting and nature watching that I have opted to not get cable or satellite at the new house. For the time being, I am content to spend hours out on the deck or the screen porch playing my guitar or cradling my camera in my lap. While I don't have photos to prove all of this yet, I have found that we have very strong populations of belted kingfishers, green herons, great blue herons, painted turtles, barn and cliff swallows, coopers hawks, redtailed hawks, a few ospreys, an eagle or two, a few great horned owls, a muskrat that lives under my dock, and a vulture that always passes over daily around midmorning. Our dragonfly population seems to be dominated by widow skimmers but there are more to find and I've seen a couple of snakes to boot. Overall, this place feels like my home and I never want to leave it if I don't have to. Please stay tuned, there is definitely more to come...

Peterpaul Ott was a sculptor who was born in Pilsen, Czechoslovakia.
He studied at the Austrian State Academy of Fine Arts after serving in World War I.

In 1924 Ott immigrated to New York City and found work in a furniture factory carving wood. He studied at the prestigious Cooper Union (where every student there is attending on a Merit Scholarship!) & earned commissions to do public sculptures until moving to Chicago in 1931, where he taught at Northwestern University, Evanston Academy of Fine Arts, and gave private lessons.
He worked as supervisor for the WPA sculpture program from 1936 to 1939. Then he moved to Laguna Beach, California and taught at several high schools.

Atlanta Ground Stop

Full ground stop in Atlanta for a couple hours yesterday because of fog. If my plane had gotten in 2 minutes later, I would have missed my connection and arrived home at 10:00 PM instead of noon. I had to do an OJ* through the airport and as I came down the terminal I could hear my name being called. I was the last one on the plane.

Delays and missed connections only seem to happen to me on the way home. I seriously cannot remember ever being delayed on the way out. Sometimes this would be welcome. There is no better excuse for missing an 11 hour meeting in a windowless room than "I am stuck in Atlanta during a ground stop". There is nothing like receiving a full pardon for missing work plus receiving sympathy while you relax in an easy chair drinking free booze and surfing the net at the Delta Sky Club.

*For those of you too young to remember, between being famous for playing football and being famous for getting away with murder, OJ Simpson made TV commercials for Hertz. These ads featured OJ running football style through the airport with his luggage, jumping over furniture etc.

Atlanta tornado damage #4 (crop of #3)

Someone went crazy with duct tape! A tornado ripped through downtown Atlanta on March 14th, damaging buildings, injuring 27 people and leaving the downtown area covered in broken glass and furniture. Tornados rarely hit urban areas or blow through busy cities. Six weeks later, I could still see damage to the Georgia Dome, Phillips Arena, CNN Center and Centennial Olympic Park.

Architecture
The Luverne Downtown Historic District is significant under Criterion C for its collection of early to mid twentieth-century residential architecture. Contained within the historic district are locally significant examples of high style and vernacular houses. Victorian era buildings and bungalows are prevalent. Tudor Revivals and Colonial Revivals are present in smaller numbers.

Victorian era residences feature such stylistic embellishments as brackets, spindlework friezes, and turned posts. Bungalows in Luverne display exposed timberwork, wood posts on stone or brick piers. The houses of the middle and upper classes reflect a conscious effort of their builders and owners to capture the essence of national architectural trends. Vernacular house types include massed plan and pyramidal roof cottages. These homes reflect the basic needs of shelter for the Luverne working class that resided in them from the late nineteenth-century and early twentieth-centuries.

The Luverne Historic District is significant under Criterion C for its collection of late nineteenth to mid twentieth-century commercial buildings. Represented in the district are examples of locally significant one and multiple story commercial block. Possessive of a moderate degree of integrity, the resources in the :historic district feature such historic characteristics as name and date plates, decorative brickwork, tin panel ceilings, transoms, parapets, bracketed cornices, corbelled belt and string courses, recessed panels, brackets, some clerestories (many of which have been covered), and glass display bays. The National Guard Armory (Resource 186) is a noteworthy example of an Art Moderne facility that follows the pattern established by Montgomery architect Earl Lutz for Alabama armories.

Commerce
The Luverne Historic District is significant under Criterion A for its collection of late nineteenth to mid twentieth-century commercial buildings. These buildings represent some seventy years of Luverne's commercial history. They are associated with significant periods of economic growth, including Luverne's industrial, commercial, and residential infancy in the late nineteenth-century (ca. 1890, 1897) and transportation and industrial growth in the early twentieth-century (ca. 1900-1907, 1913). Contained within the Luverne Historic District are historic banks, general merchandise stores, restaurants, specialty shops, professional offices, and warehouses, all the elements commonly associated with a commercial district. The goods and services, such as horses, feed and seed, hardware, clothing, grocery items, dry goods, money, and furniture, ensconced in these edifices were vital to the daily functions of the town. The downtown section of the Luverne Historic District has long retained its identity and integrity as the center of commercial activity and the focal point in the city.

The historic commercial district of Luverne is significant as having been the center of COUI government for Crenshaw County since June 9, 1893. The town of Luverne was named the Crenshc County seat following a countywide vote in 1893. The county seat was moved from Rutledge to Luverne because of the railroads connection to it and because it was the population center of the county. The Luverne Historic District includes the railroad depot (Resource 183) that IT this move possible. Historic civic buildings included in the district are the National Guard Armory (Resource 186), United States Post Office (Resource 48), and Luverne City Hall (Resource 113).
