baby's room rug
we found this perfect rug on craigslist, new. its kind of small for such a big room but i think it will work. next: furniture!
also, the color of the walls seems impossible to capture on camera in tungsten light - this photo depicts it the most accurately! light peach.
Baby's Room
Got it all painted and some of the wall stuff up. Most of the big furniture is built and in place, but still a few more things to add. The green and pink has really worked out nicely.

BAMBOO FURNITURE COSTA RICA : BAMBOO FURNITURE
BAMBOO FURNITURE COSTA RICA : MODERN TV FURNITURE.
Bamboo Furniture Costa Rica
- Furniture made either from, or in imitation of, bamboo. It was popular during the vogue for CHINOISERIE in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, usually crafted in strong woods such as beech and then turned, curved and painted to imitate real bamboo.
- The best Costa Rica coffees (San Marcos de Tarrazu, Tres Rios, Heredi, Alajuela) display a full body and clean, robust acidity that make them among the most admired of Central American coffees.
- A republic in Central America on the Isthmus of Panama, with coastlines on the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea; pop. 3,956,000; capital, San Jose; language, Spanish
- a republic in Central America; one of the most politically stable countries in Latin America
- (costa rican) of or relating to Costa Rica or its people; "the Costa Rican rain forest"; "our Costa Rican neighbors"
Guadua angostifolia Thorn
This bamboo is wonderful for use in making furniture and in building houses. But the thorns are long and strong. They will puncture through the sole of a boot and into the foot if careless workers leave a bit of the bamboo on the ground. We remove the thorns with a machete before we begin harvesting. Note also the fuzzy texture of the culm. Young culms have this and it can be very irritating to the skin. We don't harvest a culm until it is about five years old.

Grace Gifford
was born in the Dublin suburb of Rathmines, the second youngest of twelve children of Frederick, a Catholic, and Isabella, a Protestant, and a niece of the artist Sir Frederick Burton. The boys were brought up as Catholics, the girls as Protestants. From the age of 16 in 1904 she studied at the Dublin Metropolitan School of Art under William Orpen, where her talent for caricature was discovered. In 1907 she studied fine art at the Slade School of Art in London.
She returned to Dublin in 1908 and struggled to make a living as a caricaturist, publishing her cartoons in The Shanachie, Irish Life, Meadowstreet, and the Irish Review, which was edited from 1913 by Joseph Plunkett. Gifford became engaged to Plunkett in 1915. She took instruction and was received into the Roman Catholic Church in April 1916. The wedding was planned for Easter Sunday 1916 - the date of the Rising, which was put down and its leaders sentenced to death. Gifford and Plunkett were married on 3 May in the chapel of Kilmainham Jail, only a few hours before his execution. Grace became active in Sinn Fein, and was elected to its executive in 1917. On May Day 1919 the Irish Women Worker's Union held a general holiday and distributed handbills featuring a cartoon by Gifford. She was on the anti-Treaty side in the Civil War, and along with many Republicans she was arrested and detained in Kilmainham for three months in 1923 when she painted the picture above on her cell wall.
She received a Civil List pension from the government in 1932. She sued Plunkett's father, Count Plunkett, in 1934 for a share in her husband's estate, and received an out-of-court settlement of ?700. She died alone in her flat in Dublin in 1955, and her body was not found for a week. She was buried with full military honours.

151 W. 54th St.,
New York, NY 10019
London NYC, a turreted, bay-fronted tower that sits midblock on 54th Street, between Seventh Avenue and the Avenue of the Americas.
The 54 story hotel has a rose-beige brick and granite facade and was designed by Frank Williams and Associates, and the interior by Birch Coffey Design Associates.
---------
In 1981, landowner Sol Goldman(said to be New York City's largest private landlord in the mid-1980s) planned a 32-story apartment house on the site across the street from the New York Hilton. He was unable to get the project off the ground. Goldman brought in William Zeckendorf Jr. (a developer in the 770-room Holiday Inn Crowne Plaza on Broadway, between 48th and 49th Streets,) and Kumagai Gumi of Tokyo as partners in the mid 1980s.
They had architect Frank Williams design a 45-story building with a hotel on the upper floors and an office building on the lower floors. They could not find a tenant to sign on for the lower floors.
The group decided then to put the hotel on the bottom floors and apartments on top. This concept proved to complex for the site size to accommodate separate lobbies and elevators.
The group consulted with Charles A. Bell, a hotel consultant and former Hilton International executive, who advised an all-suite concept – to avoid head to head competition with the New York Hilton across the street.
The Zeckendorf Company's partners in the $120 million project are Sol Goldman, the Manhattan investor and developer; Edward Lewis of Lewis & Brener, a hotel brokerage firm, and the Kumagai Gumi Company, Japanese contractors.
Zeckendorf enticed the SARA Group, a division of Swedish conglomerate, Procordia A.B. to operate the proposed hotel and make a significant financial commitment. It was to be called the Royal Concordia.
In 1986 Karl Hofer was named the pre-opening General Manager and Mal Seymourian named Director of Marketing. They convinced the developers to axe the health club and swimming pool designed for the top of the hotel – their position being visitors to New York did not come to swim.
The architect Frank Williams decided to use bay windows instead of standard windows. The NY Times quoted Williams ‘‘the new windows softened the building's surface and added another dimension to the view from inside the rooms,'' he said. ''The new design gives the building a romantic classical look that I think is reminiscent of the classical skyscrapers of the 1920's and 30's.''
Birch Coffey Design Associates (known for cruise ship interiors) was selected as the interior designer. He used light-colored, relatively monochromatic schemes, instead of heavy patterns and dark colors.
Upon opening in 1990 the smallest suites - 572 square feet - with a separate living room had a rate of $260 to $390.00. Two bedroom suites with 720 square feet fetched $450.00 to $700.00.
The New York Times reported just before the 1990 opening the hotel known as the Royal Concordia was taken over by a Japanese chain, Royal Hotel Ltd. of Osaka. The new name - RIHGA Royal - is an acronym of Royal International Hotel Group and Associates.
The RIHGA Royal Hotel Group operates today in Japan with 10 hotels, its flagship is in Osaka. The first RIHGA Royal Hotel opened as the Hotel New Osaka on January 16, 1935, the city's first world-class hotel.
In March 2001, the RIHGA Royal Hotel was purchased by Thayer Hotel Investors III with $135 million in first mortgage financing provided by German-based DePfa Bank (later known as Aareal Bank AG). The hotel was unencumbered by a hotel management company or a hotel flag. Thayer Hotel Investors III was formed in 2000 and acquired two hotels during 2001, the RIHGA Royal in New York City and the Grande Lakes Resort in Orlando.
Thayer planned to spend $10 million renovating the hotel and change the name to J.W. Marriott New York Hotel.
Thayer Hotel Investors re-named the 500-suite luxury hotel - J.W. Marriott New York Hotel - and the property was expected to serve as a flagship for the JW chain in the U.S.
Executive Chef Jose Velez and chef de cuisine Andy Arndt worked the acclaimed Halcyon Restaurant at the RIHGA Royal Hotel from 2001-2004. During this period the Halcyon received some of its best critical reviews since the opening in 1990.
Thayer commenced a phased renovation in 2001 of the first 100 of the 504 luxury suites, the restaurant, lounge, meeting and banquet areas, business center, and fitness room included new finishes, FF&E, and ADA accessibility upgrading. The renovation was completed in October 2002 without interruption of the hotel’s operation.
Loyal guests of the hotel were not pleased with Thayer's dropping the RIHGA Royal name. Thayer quietly re-named the hotel - The RIHGA Royal - a JW Marriot Hotel.
Thayer Lodging Group missed the June 2004 payment on the hotel's $135 million first mortgage. Some say Thayer defaulted as a result of weak revenues caused in part by

'It is a truth universally acknowledged...'
The writing table on which classic novelist Jane Austen produced so much great work, at her home in Chawton, Hampshire, England. Jane lived here from 1809 to 1817, only moving out for a few short months near the end of her life when her final illness made it necessary to be close to her doctor in nearby Winchester.
It was on this simple little desk that Jane revised both Sense and Sensibility, which was published in 1811 (making Jane all of ?140), and Pride and Prejudice, published in 1813. Mansfield Park followed in 1814, with Emma in 1815. Persuasion was completed in 1816 but not published until 1818, a year after her death at the age of 41. She was in the process of writing Sanditon when she died and it was never finished.
Nearby is a door which, to this day, still has a squeak when opened. Back in the early-19th century, novel writing was considered somewhat unseemly for a female - all Jane's novels which appeared during her lifetime were published anonymously, merely bearing the legend 'By a Lady', which was not uncommon at the time - so Jane had the door deliberately left un-oiled, as an early warning alarm so she could conceal her writing if anybody approached.
As a fellow writer in the 21st century world of laptops, internet research and telephone interviews, it's quite humbling to stand in front of such a tiny, plain and unpretentious table and know so much wonderful literature has emanated from it. Totally magical. If I could choose to own any piece of furniture in the world, then this would be it...
Taken in Chawton, Hampshire, England on September 1, 2009.
Orpen, William (1878-1931) - 1908 Interior at Clonsilla with Mrs. St. George (Sotheby's London, 2002)
Oil on canvas; 101 by 92 cm.
Sir William Orpen, in full Sir William Newenham Montague Orpen (born Stillorgan, County Dublin, Ireland—died London, England), British painter, best known for his vigorously characterized portraits; he also worked as an official war artist during World War I.
Orpen studied drawing at the Metropolitan School of Art in Dublin (1894–97) and at the Slade School of Fine Art in London (1897–99). He first exhibited at the New English Art Club; he became a member there in 1900. His portraits, which established his reputation, showed the influence of Edouard Manet. He also became known as a painter of group portraits such as Homage to Manet (1909), in which he portrayed members of the contemporary English art world sitting in conversation beneath a famous portrait by that artist. Orpen was the official painter of the Paris Peace Conference after World War I, for which he painted The Signing of the Peace Treaty at Versailles (1919–20).
Orpen was appointed knight commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1918 and was elected a Royal Academician in 1919. He is posthumously regarded as a facile and prolific, but somewhat superficial, artist who nevertheless achieved great popularity in his day.

Thanks to Bill Kemp, Archivist and Historian of the McLean County Museum of History, who provided the following historical background on this building.
"(T)hat “high rise” was once occupied by local furniture store concerns. In 1915, for instance, the city directory shows it as the J.E. Will Co. (a locally owned furniture business), and by 1925 it was home to the Bloomington Furniture and Stove Exchange. In the 1930s through the 1950s it was McKnight & McKnight, a local publishing company specializing in educational textbooks, workbooks, etc., many relating to the industrial arts. By 1982 or thereabouts it became the Downtowner, a residence for senior citizens, and it remains that today."

- An establishment providing accommodations, meals, and other services for travelers and tourists
- a building where travelers can pay for lodging and meals and other services
- A code word representing the letter H, used in radio communication
- In French contexts an hotel particulier is an urban "private house" of a grand sort. Whereas an ordinary maison was built as part of a row, sharing party walls with the houses on either side and directly fronting on a street, an hotel particulier was often free-standing, and by the eighteenth
New York's Hotel Pennsylvania
New York's Hotel Pennsylvania
401 Seventh Avenue (at 33rd St.)
New York, N.Y. 10001
Vornado Realty Trust owns the hotel, not Heineken. You wonder how much the hotel's RevPAR is up with the double Heineken signage.
----------------------------
According to Wikipedia the Hotel Pennsylvania was built by the Pennsylvania Railroad and leased and operated by Ellsworth Statler and his Hotel Statler Company, Inc. It opened on January 25, 1919 and was designed by the firm of McKim, Mead & White. McKim, Mead & White are known for its Beaux-Arts style - heavily used in the U..S during the period from 1880 to 1920. The architects also designed the Savoy-Plaza Hotel, Manhattan (razed in 1964), the Hotel Nacional de Cuba, Havana, Cuba built in 1930 and the columned Pennsylvania Station across the street (razed in 1963). The architects felt the Hotel Pennsylvania was appropriate to confront travelers exiting from its great Pennsylvania Station.
Ellsworth Statler's biography notes he introduced the Servidor at the Hotel Pennsylvania, a bulging panel in the guest-room door where the guest hung clothes needing cleaning or pressing. The valet could pick up the clothes and return them without ever entering the room.
The Statler Hotel Company bought it in 1949 and renamed it The Hotel Statler. Five years later, Conrad Hilton bought all 17 Statler hotels for $111,000,000, and renamed it The Statler Hilton.
The Hotel Pennsylvania's Cafe Rouge ballroom was a popular venue during the Big Band era of the 1930s and '40s. Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Artie Shaw, the Dorsey brothers and Glenn Miller were regular performers. Glenn Miller's 1940 hit "Pennsylvania 6-5000" immortalized the hotel's phone number. It is still the phone number for the Hotel Pennsylvania, but it has been reduced to an all-numeric number 212-736-5000
In 1984 the hotel was purchased by Penta Hotels and became part of 16-unit chain operated out of West Germany as a joint venture by Lufthansa, Swissair and British Airways. At that time The Pennsylvania had 1,705 rooms, making it the third largest in the city after the New York Hilton (2,041 rooms) and the Sheraton New York (1,746 rooms).
Ascot Associates, headed by Abraham Hirschfeld, acquired Penta's interest in 1991 when the hotel was operating at a loss and returned it to its original name, Hotel Pennsylvania. (In 1998, it was Abraham Hirschfeld who offered $1,000,000 to Paula Jones to drop her sexual harassment lawsuit against former US President Bill Clinton.)
In a New York Times article from 1995 Mary Diem, the hotel's general manager, stated an average of 500 rooms a night are leased to airline crews and 400 to travel groups. The rest of the rooms are leased at rack rates averaging from $109 for a single and $129 for a double. During that time The Palace Hotel was renovated and it sold 800 rooms of furnishings to the Pennsylvania Hotel. The furniture was used in 1,000 rooms at the Pennsylvania, where most rooms 14 by 16 feet or 12 by 20 feet.
In 1997 Vornado Realty Trust based in Paramus, N.J., acquired the hotel from Hirschfeld Properties. Vornado described the building in 2005 as "a placeholder, sort of like a parking lot."
In 2007 Vornado Realty Trust made public its intent to demolish the hotel (which is not a city landmark) and build a Pelli Clarke Pelli designed 2.5-million-square-foot office tower.
Due to the controversy of the 1963 destruction of McKim, Mead and White designed Penn Station and the relation the hotel has with the station, some feel that the demolition of the hotel will be as if New York were demolishing Penn Station all over again.
According to the 2010 Vornado Realty Trust Year-End Report the Hotel Pennsylvania's latest operating statistics are:
2010 Occupancy 83.2%
2010 ADR $143.28
2010 RevPAR $119.23
2010 EBITDA $23,760,000
2009 Occupancy 71.5%
2009 ADR $133.20
2009 RevPAR $95.18
2009 EBITDA $15,108,000
2008 Occupancy 84.1%
2008 ADR $171.32
2008 RevPAR $144.01
2008 EBITDA $42,269,000
With business booming the hotel in 2002 officially trademarked the phrase "World's Most Popular Hotel."
Recent attempts by preservationists to have the hotel designated an official city landmark have failed.
