St James' Club The club was founded in 1857 by the Liberal statesman the second Earl Granville and by the Marchese d'Azeglio, Minister of Sardinia to the Court of St James's, after a dispute at the Travellers' Club. Most members of the diplomatic corps resigned from the Travellers' and joined the new club. The club's members continued to be largely diplomats and authors, and it became the home of the Dilettanti Society. The name St James's Club had previously been used by the Travellers' Club. According to the Encyclopaedia Britannica article Club, in 1902, the club was the smallest London gentlemen's club in terms of numbers. The club was first established in Charles Street, just off the south corner of Berkeley Square, London. By 1878, it had moved into its clubhouse on Piccadilly which had previously been Coventry House. During WWII the club was briefly the home of Ian Fleming. After the war the gentlemen's clubs of London fell into decline. Facing financial problems, the club merged with Brooks's in 1978 and vacated its premises which later became the headquarters of The International House network of language schools, founded by John Haycraft. Since October 2007, it has been the London campus of Limkokwing University of Creative Technology, a private intercontinental university based in Malaysia. The new establishment bearing the name St James's Club and Hotel, based in Park Place, London (above) has no connection with the original club. 2009-03-06-054 London Foreign Office Shell Centre & London Eye from St James Park Winter The lake in St James Park is currently drained while 20 years worth of mud and rubbish are removed. That means I've had to look for other views in St James Park, and I found this view of the Foreign Office, the London Eye, and the Shell Centre all juxtaposed together. The Foreign office was designed by Gilbert Scott, who came up with a proposal for a Gothic style Building, however Palmerston, the Prime Minister of the day, indicated that he would prefer an Italianate building. Scott backed down and produced one of London's most distinguished buildings (there is a story that the original plans were recycled into St Pancras station hotel, this isn't true but it is a good story!). The London Eye Ferris Wheel was erected for the millenium and is one of London's top tourist attractions. The Shell centre was erected on the site of the 1951 Festival of Britain and has been criticised for its rather uninspired design. It does have a most interesting fountain designed by Franta Belsky, which sadly I have never seen working.
