Onam (Malayalam: ???) is one the largest festival in the India and it is celebrated in the state of Kerala. It falls during the first month of the Malayalam calendar Chingam (August–September). It is associated with a myth which says a former king of kerala Maveli is coming back to visit his subjects. The festival lasts for ten days and is linked to many elements of Kerala's culture and tradition. Intricate flower carpets (pookalam, elaborate banquet lunch (sadhya), snake boat races (vallam kali), Puli Kali, and the Kaikottikkali dance all play a part in the festival.
The following song is often sung over Onam:

manusharellarum onnupole
amodhathode vasikkum kalam
