Servel the Silent Everyone remembers Francis, the Talking Mule, but how many recall Servel, the Silent Gas Refrigerator? Made by Electrolux, a company better known for it's vacuum cleaners, from 1933 to 1957, from the recollections I've gathered from people who remember gas refrigerators they all really sucked; you had to make sure the door was closed all the time for the food to get cold and it took ages to make ice cubes. On the plus side, since they didn't use freon they were when new more environmentally friendly than electric refrigerators (something that was lost on advertisers back then) as well effective in thwarting a classic telephone prank. On the minus side, as the Electrolux Servels aged they became a hazard for carbon monoxide poisoning prompting a Consumer Product Safety Commission recall in 1990.
