What's in My Makeup Bag?

What's in My Makeup Bag?

I got a new cosmetics pouch in early December 2007~

I didn't realize I'd already used my previous pouch for like 6 years! O_O then I noticed the other day how it's all broken at the sides... so I had to look for a new one. I actually was a bit hesitant in getting this one at first cuz I don't really like polka dots.

but then after searching couple rounds, I still like the whole design of this one the best! cuz there are additional inner pockets (sooo few cosmetics bags come with that but it's the one thing I look for) plus, the zipper opens all the way and you can open the whole bag up wider, which means it's easier to get things~

it's water-resistant too and quite a big pouch! I was also looking at this Betsey Johnson one (with leopard print and thunder, haha) but it's smaller and yet cost more! so I finally got this... factoring in additional year-end discounts and it's slightly cheaper than usual ^O^

so I've been using this for a month now and I absolutely LOVE it!!! it makes me that much happier everyday when carrying this around~ sooo cute~~~

oh and I usually only carry the pressed powder compact and blusher with me... plus the solid perfume and lip gloss on occassions~ all the other things, I'll leave at home cuz I'd complete my makeup before I go out anywayz so there's really no need to carry tons of stuff everywhere with me!

First Gyaru attempt

First Gyaru attempt

At the beginning of the year I made a goal to become more Gyaru styled, SO HERE IT IS~
Eventually I'll become better so please just think of this as an experiment.
IMO, I did a good job on the eyes, perhaps maybe too much eye makeup, and I put too much blush on, but it doesn't look too bad for a more dramatic look of Gyaru style.
Many Gyaru looks to come~ :>

Products used; liquid eyeliner, gel eyeliner, a gold eyeshadow mixed with black eyeshadow and white/silvery eyeshadow along the top under my eyebrow bone, mascara, along with Dolly lashes both on top and bottom lash lines to finish off the look.
The brands of makeup IMO don't really matter since you could do this look with cheap or expensive makeup, so don't worry about the makeup I used costing too much, I'm sure they'll be a cheaper brand of makeup that can give you the same look.
I'll post a tutorial I did a bit later along with the products I use, for now this picture is just a test. :>

Asian Style Hummus Dip with Green Broth

Asian Style Hummus Dip with Green Broth

Ingredients and Preparation for Part B Photo:

Hummus Asian Style Ingredients:
Enough for 3 days

2 level cups of sprouted raw Chickpeas
˝ cup of white sesame seeds
Ľ cup of loose chopped fresh herbs of Mint and Sweet Basil
8 cloves of fresh garlic cloves ( I Love my Garlic) You can start with 4 and work your way up to 8 if you like.
4 tablespoons of Extra Virgin Olive Oil from amber glass.
A pinch of Sea Salt and Black Pepper
Ľ cup of fresh Lime or Lemon Juice
One level teaspoon of Thai Red Chili Powder or
On stand by a shaker of Thai Red Chili Powder or
More Olive Oil on stand by

Hummus Asian Style Method:
You have 2 choices here, you can blend your Chickpeas Raw or you can elect to steam them for 2 to 4 minutes the choice is yours.Either way you will have a great tasting Hummus.

Add your white sesame seeds to a dry glass blender or milling machine and blend dry.
Place the milled white sesame seed granules at the bottom of the blender and pour your 4 tablespoons of Olive Oil on top.
Add your crushed garlic cloves with a pinch of sea salt and black pepper.
Add your Ľ cup of fresh herbs of Mint and Sweet Basil
Pour in Ľ cup of your fresh squeezed Lime or Lemon Juice
Add your Level teaspoon of Red Thai Chili Powder

With the lid closed securely turn on the blender to high speed until you see a smooth consistency then turn of , and do a taste test with follow up adjustments if need be.

If all is well, then slowly add your sprouted Chickpeas with a wooden spoon (A Metal Spoon can dull your Blenders Blades) a little at a time and blending in between.

In the end we want to see a paste like consistency , and if you need to thin the Hummus out a bit then you can just add more Olive Oil.

Taste again and make any necessary adjustments with your ingredients at hand and your ready.

Spoon your delicious Hummus into a serving bowl.
In the Photo I dribbled some Olive Oil over top, sprinkled some Thai Chili powder ,and placed 3 plump brazil nuts with a garnish of fresh sweet Basil herb.

Any of your favorite nuts and fresh herbs will do as well.

Of course your left over hummus can be stored in a large glass mason jar in the back of your refrigerator where it is the coldest spot for any food storage. Your Hummus should keep for 3 days no problem.

Hummus Asian Style Veggie Sticks used for Dipping Ingredients:

One fresh Carrot, White Chinese Radish, and 2 sticks of young Broccoli with leaves intact and Celery with leaves intake d.

Nutritional Tip: All leaves of Root Vegetables like Carrots, Turnips, Beets, to just name a few are all edible and extremely high in Chlorophyl ,the green pigment in all plants that will provide good taste and supreme nutrition. All Leaves of the Cruciferous Vegetables (The Mustard Family)should also be eaten as well for the same reason. All edible flowers will add color to your food presentations and nutrition also.

Hummus Asian Style Veggie Sticks for Dipping Method

Plug in your Tea Kettle

All the vegetables should be cleaned , rinsed, and cut to finger size.

Take out a large bowl , place all your vegetables inside and pour hot water from your Tea Kettle until your vegetables are submerged. (Blanching)

Next place a dry plate under your bowl of Hummus.
Pour the green blanched water into another bowl with a few leaves for your soup broth and add some Nori Seaweed pieces and a few dry Chinese red Plums (Jujubes they add sweetness)
A dash of fermented Soya Sauce for added taste, and you have a savory delicious Asian soup.

Next pour and spread some fermented Soya Sauce around the large plate that has your bowl of Hummus in the middle. You can add a bit of Wasabi or Mustard to the sauce as well.

Place the ends of your veggie dipping sticks in to the sauce in a circle pattern around your bowl of Hummus.

A separate bowl of mixed dry Garlic and Red Onion for dropping into your Hummus and Soup with your fingers is fun as well.
As you dip your veggie stick into the Hummus the combined mixture of fermented Soya Sauce gives a very savory and pleasant taste, like a marriage between Mediterranean and Asia.

I hope that you enjoy this favorable and fun nutritious recipe that takes less than 15 minutes to make?

"May I inspire the Gourmet in You "

I like this version better although it took quite sometime to fix that make up as it's hard to colour yourself in a certain way.

So this is my last Friday that I am free. Feels like the starting of school after summer holiday. I'll have an another celebration dinner this evening, but this time it's for Bahar and me, because she got a job and she starts on Monday too :)

After I downloaded the pix, I found that the person who'd shot the ad had included reflections of people in the eye iris. Check it out. On the left is, I think, a man wearing a blue shirt that blends into the upper body of a woman. ] Try looking a the picture as big as possible to see those images. Kotex 1972

Kotex 1972

True story: to say that my mother was skittish about discussing anything that had to do with the human body or its functions is a gross understatement. The woman got edgy if someone mentioned that we were out of toilet paper.
When I was in middle school, we had a class called "Health" in which the poor, beleaguered teachers were pressed into service to explain the details of the reproduction process. There was no co-ed mingling for this class, and I assume that both boys and girls received the same information via a generalized short film on the subject, but the segregation must have made it easier for all to manage such a touchy topic. Each gender could feel free to ask questions about his or her own set of reproductive equipment and/or discuss problems and concerns with said equipment amongst "friends" of the same sex.
In the girl's class, we were given a little booklet about what to expect from your "changing body", a sample of Kotex pads and an elastic belt which held the pads in place (it really was the dark ages where menstrual products were concerned, and before the welcome advent of adhesive pads that stuck to your underwear). I brought this bounty home and promptly hid it in my underwear drawer until it became necessary to put any of it into service.
My mother was fond of looking through our drawers on occasion (just to keep herself current with our private doings, I imagine) and of course, came upon my little stash of period preparedness. No words were spoken about this, of course, but a day or two later, a small book was on my pillow when I came home from school. It was called "From Teens to Marriage" or something along those lines and it was written by PAT BOONE. I suppose he considered himself something of an authority on the subject because he had produced quite a few daughters in his day. Whatever the case, the "information" in the book was sketchy, cloudy, vague and punctuated with many references to God and Jesus, which further perplexed me. This book went right into the drawer with the rest of the stash until further notice.
And then came the day when my period started. Just one day, I was minding my own business and there it was. I was not startled, but rather resigned to the fact that I now belonged to the "Secret Sisterhood" (as our Health teacher mysteriously referred to those who had started their periods) and must begin "taking care of myself in a different way" as Pat Boone instructed.
I was so afraid to tell my mother (who had never, EVER broached any such subject with me and let it be known with various body language clues and tight-lipped comments that things like this were NOT appropriate topics) that I put it off for two days, using the sample pads and paper towels as backup until I could figure out what to do.
Finally, after much hemming, hawing, procrastinating and pacing, I came out with it. I had started my period! There! I told her while she was in the bathroom applying her makeup so that I wouldn't have to look her in the eye. After my announcement, there was dead quiet from the bathroom. My heart was pounding. And then this: "would you want to use a tampon?"
How the HELL does a tampon work and why would I want to use it? This was not covered in Health class (back in the day when they thought that tampons would somehow impair your virginity status)!
I said that, no, I was not....comfortable....with that idea. What else have you got?
This is where the story takes an incomprehensible turn. My mother, still without looking me in the eye, instructs me to TELL MY DAD to take me to the store for "supplies". WHAT?? Oh, the humiliation!
More uncomfortable silence while mother continues to apply her mascara. I slink from the room and find my dad reading the paper. I tell him that I need to go to the store for "some stuff". God bless this man for what happened next. Without any fuss at all, he puts down the paper, we get into the car, we drive to the store and he makes himself scarce as I scan the "feminine needs" aisle for...something.....
And there is the Kotex box. Ah, this was familiar! So I picked one up and also got some antiperspirant and shampoo so as not to make such a glaring statement at the check-out. My dad paid without any weird comments and drove us home with no mention of anything uncomfortable or embarrassing.
My mother and I never discussed that day's events (or anything else, really). If I needed for her to purchase supplies on her weekly trip to the grocery store, I would write it on the list without remark. The box of pads would then appear in my bathroom as if by magic.
My daughter knows this story by heart. I told her all about it when it came time for her to attend Health class. There was never a kid more prepared than she was for the onset of her period!

Pictures From M.A.C

Pictures From M.A.C

Left: London A/W 2007 Trend.

THE PRO TIP OFFS
For colour-washed lids with maximum transparency, do as Petros Petrohillios at Gharani Strok and trade eye shadow for a powder blush – "they're softer and less pigmented," he explained. M·A·C White Face and Body Foundation "doesn't so much make skin pale as brighten it – the effect is a complexion that's translucent and luminous rather than ghostly," explained Makky backstage at Peter Jensen.

TREND ONE: ADORN-ABLE
M·A·C artists were into striking a playful makeup chord in London Fashion Week. Take lip colours: after the grey-eyed glamour that dominated New York catwalks, London's loud mouths were equally punchy, powerful and precisely applied. There was opaque marshmallow (M·A·C Lipstick in Snob) at Roksanda Ilincic and Todd Lynn, day-glo pink at House of Holland, electric tangerine at Peter Jensen, dazzling coral at Danielle Scutt and magenta at Hamish Morrow. And colour didn't stop at the lips. At Jonathan Saunders, Miranda Joyce thought "primary, artistic, finger-painted, shocking!" with eyebrows fuzzed over with hot pink or yellow, at Gharani Strok, Petros Petrohillios was in an Eighties mood with matte lavender-washed lids and peachy contoured cheeks and at Roksanda Ilincic, Val Garland was into "taking a ladylike idea and having fun with it" as she combined minty eye shadow and black dots "to make a youthful, clubby moment in eye liner".

TREND TWO: BOLD AND BARE
A degree of toughness and nonchalance is intrinsic to London's beauty ethos both on, and off, the catwalk. Hence there is always a certain "bare faced" following to London Fashion week, with designers eschewing too much makeup in a bid to "keep it real" in the most literal sense. Fall 07 proves no exception, but these pale, pared-back faces weren't devoid of makeup. While skin was as bare as possible (moisturizer with Select Cover-Up was the preferred combination), there was serious work put into this minimalism. At Nicole Farhi, Val Garland used no less than five different eye and lip pencils to dapple faces in freckles before patting Vintage Rose Cream Colour Base onto cheeks with a fan brush. M·A·C's collection of contouring and shading powders were key at Preen (for the shadowy eyes) and Sinha Stanic (where Nude gave the cheek "a slight bloom," said Sharon Dowsett), making face-shaping come to form. And while Marios Schwab couldn't have looked less worked, the mahogany slashed brow at Giles was grippingly precise, showcasing how a strident makeup gesture works best on a creamy canvas.

THE PRO TIP OFFS
An element of “Done it myself” (in the back of a cab) imprecision is essential to the charm of the new unconventional eye liners. Arm yourself with a black liner and think Amy Winehouse (ŕ la Sportmax). Get dense colour along the lashline with new Liquidlast liner. At John Richmond, Sharon Dowsett explained that “it really anchors the line along the lashes – with creamy textures on the eye, traditional liner can get a bit mobile.”

TREND ONE
FUTURE CLASSICS
Dark eyes and ebony liner are Italian makeup stalwarts. But instead of revisiting those well-trodden Dolce Vita references of old, this season M·A·C artists were looking to the future with a sci-fi feeling leading the way with eye liners. At Alessandro dell’Acqua Charlotte Tilbury wanted girls “to look like they’ve fallen off the moon: sexual, graphic a little futuristic to reflect the space-agey sexy feel of the collection” with an obscure oblong of liner. Nonconformist, too, was her Amy Winehouse-inspired “devil horn” eye liner shape for Sportmax, while at Anna Molinari and Just Cavalli liner was simple, strident and super graphic. And for Iceberg, Karim Rahman wanted “glamorous punk” sharp liner, a feeling echoed at Jenny Packham with the punky hot-pink eye shadow and black liner and at John Richmond where eyes blocked in purple-black struck an ever hard rift. Not what you’d see on Loren, but equally striking (and no less beautiful), the future of liner looks graphic.

TREND TWO
HALO EFFECTS
Space-age was also the tendency with skin in Milan, with “dimensional” consistently topping the makeup agenda. Especially at Alberta Ferretti, where M·A·C artist Romeo Jennings explained that it was “all about alien-like skin, dewy and matte at the same time so that it looks artificially beautiful,” using Strobe Liquid (a new formula of M·A·C’s cult Strobe Cream to be released in 2008, which gives ultra light-reflective pearl) across the T Zone and lips to infuse skin with a frosted lustre. This halo-dimension feeling was taken to newly technical dimensions at Bottega Veneta, where Charlotte Tilbury framed the entire face and its high planes with Strobe Liquid to give a light-bathed effect, before building-up 3-D cheeks with three different cream pink blushes and emplo

Sinnotts Cross - scene of ambush

Sinnotts Cross - scene of ambush

Sinnots Cross Ambush
During the War of Independence, the 9th Battalion of the Kilkenny Brigade IRA consisted of farmers and labourers, mostly in their mid twenties, and few of whom had any military experience. Indeed, before the ambush at Sinnott’s Cross, in June 1921, possibly the only two rebels with any experience of warfare, guerrilla or otherwise, were James ‘The Solider’ Walsh (a signal officer) and Phil Henebery, both of whom had fought with the British army during the Great War.
The Battalion Quartermaster, Ted Moore (Rathcurby) would often recall that, if it hadn’t been for Henebery’s military experience during the ambush, all would have been lost for the rebels. As we shall see later, both of these men (Moore and Henebery) played a particular role in the ambush, although we cannot say with any certainty just what it was that Henebery did, to deserve the accolade.
Although ‘Big’ Pat Walsh (Clogga) was generally regarded as being the O/C of the Battalion, and although many later thought that either himself or Dick Brennan (Knockanure) was in charge at Sinnott’s Cross, it would seem that it was actually Ned ‘na Coille’ Walsh (Portnascully) who led the men on that day. Our information comes from an interview with Martin Murphy (Grange), done some time in the 1960’s, when he said “The man in charge was Ned ‘na Coille’ Walsh although some others thought later that Dick Brennan was in charge. Ted Moore was Quartermaster”.
Build-up to the Ambush
The seeds of the ambush were sown some six months earlier, when the Dublin High Command made efforts to increase republican activity all over the country. They were concerned at the pressure that was being put on Cork and Tipperary and wanted to force the British to spread their resources. This resulted in a visit to Mooncoin by the legendary Ned Alyward of Callan. Aylward was a veteran of the Hugginstown and Nile-Mile-House ambushes and had taken part in the dramatic escape from Garryricken House a month earlier.
In April, and following the Moonarch Wood ambush, Aylward travelled south where he encouraged the 9th Battalion to ambush a cycle patrol of Royal Irish Constabulary and Black & Tans. At the time, there were two patrols in the area. The first came from Lower Kilmacow, passed through Upper Kilmacow and continued on to Clogga Creamery. Here, they would meet a similar patrol, which came from Fiddown, through Cloncunny and Sinnott’s Cross. The two patrols would stop and talk to each other for a while, swapping stories and sharing cigarettes, then return to their respective barracks in Kilmacow and Fiddown. It was the ‘Kilmacow’ patrol, which Aylward suggested they ambush and he inspected a site between Upper and Lower Kilmacow.
Several of the local IRA refused to carry out this ambush however, on the basis that they needed more time to prepare. Aylward promised that they could keep any arms that they captured, but Ted Moore and Jack ‘na Coille’ Walsh in particular, were adamant in their refusal. Aylward left the area shortly after and returned to the fight in West Kilkenny. He would not have to wait long for the Mooncoin men to act however and they must have begun their preparation shortly after.
The local IRA certainly needed time to prepare. They had little or no ammunition and only a few shotguns to take on the heavily armed Crown forces. To make matters worse, they would have had only the barest of military training.
As can be imagined, the first priority was to secure ammunition. They made buckshot cartridges by mixing powder from rifle bullets and cut up nails and steel. In order to hide the ammunition, Jack Larressy (of Larressy’s Shop in Clogga) constructed a timber box within which the ammunition was placed and subsequently hidden in the bogs in Clogga. In later years, Jack would recall that the timber he had used was from his shop, and had the words ‘Laressy’s Shop’ printed on it. If the British ever found the box, they wouldn’t have had far to look to know who had made it.
A further problem was to ensure that the British troops would actually arrive, as the rebels did not want to wait for several hours in a ditch, before realising that there would be no one to ambush. As has been said earlier, there were two established patrols in the area. However, the British would frequently alter their routine, sometimes not coming at all. As Jack ‘na Coille’ recalled some forty years later ‘the military and RIC were stationed in Fiddown and in Kilmacow. A patrol passed occasionally from Piltown to Clogga. That was their route. We knew the times they passed. Sometimes it would be at 6 or 7 a.m. but it was always before dinnertime or earlier’. As things turned out, the British did not arrive ‘before dinnertime or earlier’ and the men had to wait until approximately 3 o’clock that day.
Whatever about the time, it was vital to ensure that they did actually arrive. In order to ‘draw out’ the patrols, the IRA caused various disturbances in the area. This w

US Air Force Lockheed C-130 Hercules, Balad Air Base, Iraq

US Air Force Lockheed C-130 Hercules, Balad Air Base, Iraq

Airmen from the 777th Expeditionary Aircraft Maintenance Unit, Balad Air Base, Iraq, prepare a C-130 for takeoff May 17, 2006. The 777th C-130 squadron arrived at Balad Air Base, Iraq, Jan 2006. Since then, the unit has flown more than 3700 sorties, moved over 54,200 people and 11,790 tons of cargo. The Unit is comprised of active duty, Guard and Reserve aircraft, and is an integral part of operation at Balad Air Base.
The Lockheed C-130 Hercules is a four-engine turboprop military transport aircraft designed and built originally by Lockheed, now Lockheed Martin. Capable of using unprepared runways for takeoffs and landings, the C-130 was originally designed as a troop, medical evacuation, and cargo transport aircraft. The versatile airframe has found uses in a variety of other roles, including as a gunship (AC-130), for airborne assault, search and rescue, scientific research support, weather reconnaissance, aerial refueling, maritime patrol and aerial firefighting. It is the main tactical airlifter for many military forces worldwide. Over 40 models and variants of the Hercules serve with more than 60 nations.
During its years of service, the Hercules family has participated in countless military, civilian and humanitarian aid operations. The family has the longest continuous production run of any military aircraft in history. In 2007, the C-130 became the fifth aircraft—after the English Electric Canberra, Boeing B-52 Stratofortress, Tupolev Tu-95, and Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker—to mark 50 years of continuous use with its original primary customer, in this case, the United States Air Force. The C-130 is also the only military aircraft to remain in continuous production for 50 years with its original customer, as the updated C-130J Super Hercules.
Design and development
The Korean War, which began in June 1950, showed that World War II-era piston-engine transports—Fairchild C-119 Flying Boxcars, Douglas C-47 Skytrains and Curtiss C-46 Commandos—were inadequate for modern warfare. Thus on 2 February 1951, the United States Air Force issued a General Operating Requirement (GOR) for a new transport to Boeing, Douglas, Fairchild, Lockheed, Martin, Chase Aircraft, North American, Northrop, and Airlifts Inc. The new transport would have a capacity for 92 passengers, 72 combat troops or 64 paratroopers in a cargo compartment that is approximately 41 feet (12 m) long, 9 feet (2.7 m) high, and 10 feet (3.0 m) wide. Unlike transports derived from passenger airliners, it was to be designed from the ground-up as a combat transport with loading from a ramp at the rear of the fuselage. This innovation for military cargo aircraft was first pioneered on the WW II German Junkers Ju 252 and Ju 253 "Hercules" transport prototypes in World War II. The Boeing C-97 also had a retracting ramp through clamshell doors, but could not be used for airdrops of cargo.
The Hercules also resembled a larger four-engine brother to the C-123 Provider with a similar wing and cargo ramp layout, that evolved from the Chase XCG-20 Avitruc, in turn, first designed and flown as a cargo glider in 1947. The rear ramp not only makes it possible to drive vehicles onto the plane (also possible with forward ramp on a C-124), but to airdrop or use low-altitude extraction for Sheridan tanks or even dropping improvised "daisy cutter" bombs.
A key feature was the introduction of the T56 turboprop, first developed specifically for the C-130. At the time, the turboprop was a new application of turbine engines that used exhaust gases to turn a shafted propeller, which offered greater range at propeller-driven speeds compared to pure turbojets, which were faster but thirstier. As was the case on helicopters of that era such as the UH-1 Huey, turboshafts produced much more power for their weight than piston engines. Lockheed would subsequently use the same engines and technology in the Lockheed L-188 Electra. That aircraft failed financially in its civilian configuration but was successfully adapted into the Lockheed P-3 Orion maritime patrol and submarine attack aircraft where speed and endurance of turboprops excelled.
The new Lockheed cargo plane design possessed a range of 1,100 nmi (1,300 mi; 2,000 km), takeoff capability from short and unprepared strips, and the ability to fly with one engine shut down. Fairchild, North American, Martin and Northrop declined to participate. The remaining five companies tendered a total of 10 designs: Lockheed two, Boeing one, Chase three, Douglas three, and Airlifts Inc. one. The contest was a close affair between the lighter of the two Lockheed (preliminary project designation L-206) proposals and a four-turboprop Douglas design.
The two YC-130 prototypes; the blunt nose was replaced with radar on later production models
The Lockheed design team was led by Willis Hawkins, starting with a 130 page proposal for the Lockheed L-206. Hall Hibbard, Lockheed vice president and chief engineer, saw the prop

Warmley & Siston Chronicles 1940 - 1959

Warmley & Siston Chronicles 1940 - 1959

Warmley & Siston - One Hundred years of history - Part 4 of 7 - 1940 - 1959

1940

The Phoney War was now over and the real war was raging in earnest. With more and more local government controls, the Union Offices in Stanley Road were abandoned for more spacious accommodation in Warmley House. Power and fuel rationing were organised from the home of Ernest Williams at 10 Station Road, but food rationing still came from Stanley Road.

All the scrap metal was collected, old vehicles, metal fences and even the First World War field gun was taken away for the war effort, saucepans were turned into Spitfires!

The second year of the War saw the heaviest bombing in the area. The Magnal Works drew special attention from the Germans, although only incendiary bombs were dropped. During one raid Ernest Williams had gone down to see the damage to Magnals. He later explained, 'I couldnt miss that, it was just like fairy land with all the incendiaries blazing away.'

Kingswood was also targeted that night, one young lad eed, 'Its terrible, the whole of Kingswood is on fire!' On the 6th December the worst civilian casualties in the area occurred when a German paramine made a direct hit on an air raid shelter to the rear of the Ambassador Cinema killing three and maiming many others.

Had the bomb been forty yards to the west it would have hit the crowded cinema perhaps killing hundreds. Warmley and Siston were directly under the flight path of the Luftwaffe on its horrific raids on Filtons airplane factories.

In September the people of this area were treated to the spectacle of one of the fiercest dog fights over Bristol as nine Hawker Hurricanes of 504 Squadron, RAF., fought off what seemed like hundreds of bombers, forcing them to return the way they came.

As the retreating pilots passed overhead for the second time that day the area was lucky not to have the remaining contents of the bomb bays emptied here so that the fleeing planes could make better progress on their way back home.

1941

If the death and destruction of the war were not enough, everyday tragedies were still occurring. In June of this year Ernest Stone, aged only 10, was swimming in the quarry pools near the brickyard on London Road. The day had been hot and the water looked inviting but the sides of the quarry were steep and just below the surface the water was icy cold. Ernest soon found himself in great difficulty and in no time was sucked under and drowned.

Queen Mary had moved out of London, and was staying with the Duke of Beaufort at his estate at Badminton for the duration of the war. The Queen made several good-will tours of Carsons Factory and to Douglas Works in Kingswood, to boost the moral of the local workforce.

During the Blitz of Bristol in 1940 and 1941, every single fire fighter was called out to assist. Captain Knee and the rest of the Warmley A.F.S. often found themselves in the centre of Bristol helping the Bristol brigades to put out the furnace that was burning the heart of the City Centre.

1942

After the bombing of Pearl Harbour, the Americans were dragged into the War. Just over the Siston border, opposite Fisher Road, the Americans set up a military camp. This was the first time many local people from this area had seen a real Yankee rather than the actor on the silver screen.

When the Americans ventured out for an evenings entertainment it was a great novelty, especially for the girls, to see them in the local public houses.

The camp was set up by a black labour unit and these dark skinned G.I.s were then a cause of great curiosity. A little later, the U.S. 1st Army Medical Corps took over and stayed for about two years while they prepared for the big push. In 1944 this unit was involved in the D Day landings and a large number of the men lost their lives.

Meanwhile, the Home Guard, part of the 6th Gloucestershire Battalion, were becoming a co-ordinated fighting unit. The most dangerous period had passed. Had the Germans landed in force in 1939 or 1940 the Home Guard would have had little chance to repulse them as they were lacking good weapons and training.

With the leadership of Fred Brain and Old Contemptibles like Sergeant Gibbs and Corporal Bill Johnson, the men quickly began to shape up. Weekend manoeuvres and night exercises all helped and on many evenings, the Warmley Home Guard would find themselves attacking units from the surrounding villages, training for the real thing.

1943

On 15th December, the Vicar of St. Barnabas, the Reverend Hen John Say, passed away aged 71. Just prior to his death, and as a mark of appreciation for his long and faithful service to the Diocese of Bristol, The Reverend Say was made an Honorary Canon of Bristol Cathedral.

In his memory, his sister and fellow parishioners placed a beautiful stained glass window in the south east nave of the St. Barnabas Church where he had served for seventeen years.

In his Will, Canon Say had left 500 pounds toward the co

Q&A: Sisters in a "Sweet Rush" to make music and help Somalis

GENEVA, November 2 (UNHCR) – Born in Mogadishu, Siham and Iman Hashi are the first female Somali artists to sign a record deal with a major American label. After the civil war broke out in Somalia in the 1990s, the girls and their family moved to Canada as refugees. They are currently in Los Angeles recording their first album as "Sweet Rush" with Universal Motown, while finding time to raise awareness about the continuing suffering in their homeland. The sisters discussed their lives and work recently with UNHCR Web Editor Leo Dobbs in Geneva, where they performed at the Nansen Refugee Award ceremony. Excerpts from the interview:

Tell us about your departure from Somalia

Siham: We were born in Somalia but we don't have many memories of it. Our mother was a Somali diplomat and we moved to Saudi Arabia. We stayed there for a year or two and then moved to Germany. When the civil war broke out [in 1991] we were resettled in Canada. When we came to Toronto [with their parents, two sisters and a brother], we had to learn English. We noticed that [in Toronto] we weren't really getting the things that we asked for anymore. Our parents tried their best. They sheltered us a lot and they never made us feel like we had nothing, even though we had to start all over again.

Toronto's a pretty cosmopolitan city. Did you ever face problems there?

Iman: We realised we were different when we were in middle school. I think before middle school, we just thought, "Okay, we're kids." Many people said things that went over our heads. But at middle school I realised, kids were going to ask, "Like, where are you from?" "I'm from Somalia." "You're from Somalia? That's where all the starving people are and the kids with the big stomachs and the orphans." I was like, "What! No. Somalia is beautiful, it's just going through stuff."

It was so hard. Kids are mean in middle school. That's when I realised that people thought, "Oh, so you're a refugee." And I was like, "How do you know that I'm not a refugee?" And then I heard my Mum say that we are. That's when I realised that we were different.

Where did the music come from?

Imam: We grew up in a very traditional and religious [Muslim] home. My Dad was very strict and he was worried about education and never encouraged music. But my Mum was more lenient and would let us play Whitney Houston and other popular music when we were younger, and we would sing. And she would say, "You girls can sing." The interesting thing is that my parents can sing too, but nobody really encouraged it in the house. So it was just us singing together all the time and at school and with our friends. We never took singing lessons. Training was all school based, like vocal class and the school play.

How did you make the next step?

Imam: We moved to Atlanta. It was a very difficult thing getting to Atlanta because our parents would say, "No, we want you to go to college and become doctors. That's why we brought you to this country. This is your opportunity to do great things." We were like, "We love school, school's always going to be there, but can we just pursue our passion." It was like a battle, back and forth.

But finally my Dad said okay and we moved to Atlanta because my Dad's sister lived there and he said, "I trust her, so you guys live with her." That's the only reason we were allowed to go there. We were just meeting people and recording in studios. It was really difficult. But then when we landed the record deal, it was like: "Oh, my gosh." Back home, my parents got a lot of [strife]. People aren't very happy about their decision to let us go because in the Somali culture and religion it's taboo.

So everybody was mad at my parents. The Somali community is very tightknit. Our parents didn't care and said, "We trust our daughters and this is what they want to do and we have to respect that." So we got the record deal and . . . people back home thought, "They're actually doing this." Now we're starting to work with these amazing producers and a lot of great things are happening.

Do you sing about refugees?

Imam: Yes, we have the song that we performed at the Nansen Awards, "Shelter." It does not talk specifically about shelter and refugees. But it was meant to be vague, so that anybody listening to it can feel like it's talking to them. Listen to the song – it can be talking about refugees.

And then, "Take me Home," of course. We wanted to write a song about Somalia, but we didn't want to leave anybody out. So anybody from any co

High School of the Performing Arts

High School of the Performing Arts

Midtown Manhattan, New York City, New York, United States

The High School of the Performing Arts, formerly Public School 67, is a handsome Romanesque Revival style building originally built to serve a large residential community on the west side of Manhattan, The school is the first known to have been designed by C.B.J. Snyder, Superintendent of School Buildings to the Board of Education for thirty years. Snyder's tenure coincided with a period o': enormous population growth in New York, and he designed a multitude of new schools, many of which are major architectural monuments in their neighborhoods.

As the area around Times Square changed from residential to commercial, P.S. 67 fell into disuse. After World War II, however, it was revived and adapted for use by the new High School of the Performing Arts, an innovative high school which combined the usual academic curriculum with professional training in dance, theater, and music. Unique in the country at the time of its founding, the school became tremendously successful, and its graduates include many of the most famous performing artists in the country.

New York Public Schools and C.B.J. Snyder

From the beginning of massive immigration to the city in the 1880s until the em of the 1930s, New York experienced a population growth that eventually made it a metropolis of close to eight million people. That growth was matched by an unparalleled construction boom and during those decades much of the present city was built.

Many of the city's new residents were children, and meeting their educational needs with new school buildings was a major task undertaken by the city government during the last decades of the 19th century and the first decades of the 20th century. According to a 1905 architectural periodical:

The magnitude of the undertaking and the reality of the need for these new school-houses is shown by the fact that, even after several years of active building, there are at this time seventy-seven school-houses in various stages of completeness now in charge of the architect to the Department of Education, while contracts for twenty-four more will shortly be made.

The Board of Education built all the new schools to the designs of the Superintendent of School Buildings. At first, the Board was responsible only for Manhattan and those parts of the Bronx which constituted the 19th century city; after the

consolidation of the five boroughs into the City of Greater New York in 1898, however, its authority was extended over the entire area. From 1884 to 1891, Superintendent George W. Debevoise designed handsome school buildings, many, such as Public School 11 in the Bronx (a designated New York City Landmark), in the then popular Romanesque Revival style. His output, however, was later overshadowed by the thirty years' worth of schools designed by his successor, C.B.J. Snyder.

The writer of 1905 quoted above wrote of Snyder:

Possibly it was not the best, probably it was not the most economical, certainly it was not the most expeditious way to have all the school-houses the city stood in such sore need of designed and built by the official architect to the Department ofEducation. But since that method had to be followed, it is a matter of wonderful good fortune that the official architect chanced to be such a man as is Mr. C.B.J. Snyder, who not only at the outset showed distinct capacity for his task, but has proved himself a man able to grow as his opportunities opened before him.

Mr. Wheelwright in Boston, Mr. Ittner in St. Louis, Mr. Mundie in Chicago...have done excellent service to their respective cities in the way of building school-houses...but they have not had to do their work under the same sort of pressure that has been put upon Mr. Snyder, and they have not had to adopt their architectural treatment to as closely restricted sites.

For Snyder, the basic problem in the design of New York public schools was the accommodation of the requirements of students and teachers to small sites which were necessitated by the high cost of land acquisition.

He was particularly concerned with making his schools as healthy as possible for the students, and focused much attention on the development of fire protection, ventilation, unilateral lighting, and reduced classroom size. Among his contributions to school planning was the H-plan for floor layouts which provided increased light and better ventilation, and also permitted adequate space for recreation areas.

Snyder's concerns also embraced architectural style, and unlike the designs of j many New York schools built after his retirement, Snyder's work was inventive, solid, ' and handsome. His earliest work including P.S. 67, his first known commission, continued the Romanesque Revival style of his predecessor Debevoise. He later moved into Gothic idioms, and was credited with the introduction of the Collegiate Gothic style to New York Public school architecture.

Among his finest Gothic style des

Pat Benatar 2

Pat Benatar 2

Patricia Mae Andrzejewski was born in Greenpoint, Brooklyn to Andrew and Mildred Andrzejewski, a sheet-metal worker and a beautician. Her family moved to Lindenhurst, New York on Long Island, when she was 3 years old. "I have wonderful childhood memories of picking berries in the 'woods' by our house, driving to the 'docks' on the South Bay to get freshly harvested clams", she recounted once.
Patti (as she was known) became interested in theater and began voice lessons, singing at Daniel Street Elementary School her first solo, a song called “It Must Be Spring,” at age eight. She said, "As a kid, I sang at any choir, any denomination, anywhere I could." At Lindenhurst Senior High School (1967-71), Benatar participated in musical theater, playing Queen Guinevere in the school production of Camelot, marching in the homecoming parade, singing at the annual Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony, and performing a solo of "The Christmas Song" on a holiday recording of the Lindenhurst High School Choir her senior year.
Benatar was cut off from the rock scene in nearby Manhattan though because her parents were "ridiculously strict - I was allowed to go to symphonies, opera and theater but I couldn't go to clubs". Her musical training was strictly classical and theatrical. She said, "I was singing Puccini and West Side Story but I spent every afternoon after school with my little transistor radio listening to the Rolling Stones..."
Training as a coloratura and accepted to The Juilliard School, Benatar surprised family, friends and teachers by deciding a classical career was not for her and pursued health education at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. At 19, after one year at Stony Brook, she dropped out to marry her high school sweetheart Dennis Benatar, an army draftee who trained at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, and then served with the Army Security Agency at Fort Devens, Massachusetts, before being stationed at Fort Lee, Virginia. Specialist (E-4) Dennis Benatar was stationed there for three years, and Pat worked as a bank teller in Richmond, Virginia.
In 1973, Benatar quit her job as a bank teller to pursue a singing career after being inspired by a Liza Minnelli concert she saw in Richmond. She got a job as a singing waitress at a flapper-esque nightclub named The Roaring Twenties and got a gig singing in lounge band Coxon's Army, a regular at Sam Miller's basement club. The band garnered enough attention to be the subject of a never-aired PBS special, and the band's bassist Roger Capps also would go on to be the original bass player for the Pat Benatar Band. The period also yielded Benatar's first and only single until her eventual 1979 debut on Chrysalis Records: "Day Gig" (1974), Trace Records, written and produced by Coxon's Army band leader Phil Coxon and locally released in Richmond. Her big break came in 1975 at an amateur night at the renowned comedy club Catch a Rising Star in New York. Her rousing rendition of Judy Garland's "Rock-a-Bye Your Baby With a Dixie Melody" earned her a call back by club owner Rick Newman, who would become her manager. Benatar said:
I came in from Virginia one night. I had straight red hair and I wore a dress. I sang a Judy Garland song and I don’t know what happened, I never sang in New York before in my life, even though I grew up there, everybody just went crazy. I didn't do anything spectacular. I don’t know what happened, it was just one of those magical things. [Rick Newman] came right in and said, 'Let's talk about you playing here some more...' Newman said, 'It was 2:45 in the morning. We had 30 performers and she was about #27. I was on the other side of the room drinking with some friends--then I suddenly heard this voice!'
The couple headed back to New York following Dennis' discharge from the army, and Benatar went on to be a regular member at Catch A Rising Star for close to three years, until signing a record contract. Catch A Rising Star was not the only break Benatar got in 1975. She landed the part of Zephyr in Harry Chapin's futuristic rock musical, The Zinger. Benatar's first foray into rock. The production, which debuted on March 19, 1976, at the Performing Arts Foundation's (PAF) Playhouse in Huntington Station, Long Island, ran for a month and also featured Beverly D'Angelo and Christine Lahti. Benatar noted: "I was 22 by the time I started to sing rock, so at first I was very conscious of technique and I was overly technical. That proved to be inhibiting so it was a disadvantage until I began to sing intuitively. That’s the only way to sing rock – from your gut level feelings. It's the instinct that the best singers have."
Halloween 1977 proved a pivotal night in Benatar's early, spandexed stage persona. Rather than change out of the vampire costume she had worn to a Greenwich Village cafe party that evening, she went on-stage wearing black tights, black eyeliner
