DARK DIAMOND TWILIGHT: Last coal load out from Energy Fuels (Short True Story w/Photos) (Visceral History)

This short true story with photo essay features a group of never say quit miners who wouldn't give up the ghost until the spirit rose up into the sky, or in this case until the spirit was drifted within ebony dust into the beds of a prime selection of dump trucks given the honor of diminishing the coal piles down to dark streaks on the ground, later to be reclaimed into prairie grass. The essence of this history was lifted from my being on site at The Energy Fuels Mine, in Florence, Colorado, the day during which the last load of coal was trucked off the property, in preparation for the operation shut down.

An idle period would allow a pause for hope and possibility, prior to cutting apart and tearing down the infrastructure, and hauling it off in large pieces for scrap. Being surrounded by the indomitable spirit of the small crew involved in the last load out was an honor I'll cherish until I give up the ghost, and probably well beyond that. It's observing this story's type of spirit which shows me how to let go with simple but dedicated dignity, and with a welcome amount of heart healing, easy warmth among cohorts.

The memory of loading the final coal chunks would be taken home that evening by all in attendance, along with those involved who could not be in attendance. The memory of having been involved in this mine's last day of constructive, profit oriented operations has given a sense of peace, from being on site to see a job more than well done. That memory has set a healthy attitude for those times each of us endures more than once, when a heart needs to lie heavy for a while, giving time for a day of passage to settle into a healing soul, in this case the "day" was a 160 year era.

VISCERAL HISTORY is my term for true stories told from the gut, usually featuring the perspective of the author in addition to one or a small number of individuals. Rather than attempting to give cool, detached accounts of historic events (whether panoramic public accounts or private biographical vignettes); the focus is purposely placed on emotional reactions (of the subjects, and the author’s in empathy) to what has been lived through, experienced, or observed.

The purpose is to show the subjects in a heroic light, no matter how seemingly simple their lives may be.

No life is simple.

A philosophical treatise could be written on the ways history can be recorded, from the coolest clarity and accuracy of trained historians; to the warmest skewing and heart healing dramatizations of salt of the earth men and women. Sometimes the coolest records are innocently (or purposely) politically skewed; while the warm stories, told and retold, are so gut level honest, they remain uncannily close to the truth of life.

Does anyone ever see a true picture of reality? Does a true physical reality exist beyond conscious experience of it? These questions are posed by philosophy, metaphysics, and quantum physics..., i.e., if a tree falls in the forest, does the tree actually fall if no one is there to observe it? Is the forest there?

Fortunately for me, I’m not an investigative reporter assigned and paid to dig for dirt.

I’m a literary mirror for the good and the true in the human heart.
That, I believe exists.

Respectfully Submitted,
Linda G. Shelnutt
