Antique phonograph - Casa Rayo This photo most closely captures how daylight looks inside Casa Rayo. (I wonder if the phonograph will still work if we find the missing parts and wind it up?) Over the past few years, the Rayo family has been collecting Filipino antiques from all over the country with surprising ease. Many of them, like the phonograph in the photo, are most likely lost pieces of old Manila, the beautiful pre-World War II capital of the Philippines. "It's like these things are alive and have legs," Gayle Rayo laughs, referring to the old furniture. "To decorate the house, Ronnie and I went through Filipino architecture books, staring at photographs of rare furniture. We'd wish for this particular chair, or that table, etc.--then a few weeks later someone would always come along and say, 'I have this antique I want to get rid of; do you want it?' And it'd be exactly what we wanted! Weird. I'm beginning to think these things know our house exists and are 'walking' home towards us." I suspect old Manila hasn't really disappeared. The structures may be gone, but their contents are lying around, waiting to be rediscovered. When World War II and the aftermath of poverty reduced the old Manila into a slum area, the old houses and buildings that survived the bombing and looting were eventually torn down. A precious cornucopia of furniture, books, clothing, appliances, art, jewels and personal effects were dispersed into the half-hidden network of cheap antique and junk dealers all across the country. This is the same network the Rayos have tapped into. Another Quirky British bus, the Dennis Lancet. Dennis had something of a habit of re-cycling names, and this latter day Lancet bore no resemblance to it's earlier namesake. Their re entry into the world of bus building at the end of the 1970's with the Dominator double decker was followed by several 'interesting attempts' as they fished around for something that would sell in large numbers, that something being the Dart. Along the way came came the above, built using components from their familiar fire appliance and and Municipal vehicle parts bins. XSA 4Y was the Perkins V8-540 engined prototype which drove through an Alison auto box. The engine was mid mounted underfloor, other power units were available including, surprisingly the Leyland 410, others were fitted with Perkins T6.354. From experience, these buses were fun to drive, but had quite a liking for fuel though I never found reliability a problem. It is said that this bus carried the tallest Alexander 'Y' type body built, It had been new to Northern Scottish but is seen here in the Yard of Wealden PSV Sales, Kent. It later returned to Scotland, then spent a long time in the sales stock of a dealer there. Does it still exist? CABONA'S Truckee Ca Due to the wonders of the internet virtually no photo need go without some information..... The Building at center is CABONA'S @ 10102 Donner pass Road Founded in 1918, Cabona's is the oldest retail establishment on Commercial Row. It's founder, Dave Cabona, originally sold fishing tackle, appliances and general merchandise. It later evolved into the current clothing store and the building was remodeled in a Victorian style. There was an apartment upstairs where the Cabona family lived which today serves as an office. It is still owned and operated by members of the Cabona family. The eastern part of the store was once the Goodfellow's Coffee Shop (the coffee cup is still imbedded in the sidewalk). It was owned by Joe Zorich and later sold to Reg Smart who changed its name to the Wagon Train, which is presently located east of this location. The western portion of the store was the original Dave Cabona's Fishing and tackle store ran by Slim Ellert.. In the 1800s it was a cigar store and news depot run by George W. Harrison. Judge Smith had an office in the back. The building still has up to three feet of soil between the upper and lower floors. This soil was incorporated into the plans of many buildings on Commercial Row during the last century so that if a fire struck any one building, the blaze would be smothered when the building collapsed. A commemorative plaque is located in front of the building on which is engraved “The 601,” the name given to Truckee’s vigilance committee, established in 1871 in response to the crime and number of “undesirables” that plagued the young railroad town. Grumman 6 wheeled Fire Tender This is a six wheel Grumman Fire Engine from the Velero Refinery, California, USA. It was on display at the Greater Manchester Fire Service Museum on 7th September 2008. The Museum was celebrating it's 25th Aniversary and had an open day with visiting appliances. This one came about by accident or design, I'll let you choose. Someone from the Rochdale Fire Station was driving over to Blackburn and just happened to see this engine in a farmers field. It had been bought in a job lot of vehicles, he didn't really want it but it was part and parcel of the deal. He did however say that they could display it for the open day. He was looking to sell it and said they could have it for Ł40,000.00. Unfortunately their budget doesn't stretch that far. War of the Worlds: Advance of the Martians "After the glimpse I had had of the Martians emerging from the cylinder in which they had come to the earth from their planet, a kind of fascination paralysed my actions. I remained standing knee-deep in the heather, staring at the mound that hid them. I was a battleground of fear and curiosity. I did not dare to go back towards the pit, but I felt a passionate longing to peer into it. I began walking, therefore, in a big curve, seeking some point of vantage and continually looking at the sand heaps that hid these new-comers to our earth. Once a leash of thin black whips, like the arms of an octopus, flashed across the sunset and was immediately withdrawn, and afterwards a thin rod rose up, joint by joint, bearing at its apex a circular disk that spun with a wobbling motion. What could be going on there? Beyond the pit stood the little wedge of people with the white flag at its apex, arrested by these phenomena, a little knot of small vertical black shapes upon the black ground. As the green smoke arose, their faces flashed out pallid green, and faded again as it vanished. Then slowly the hissing passed into a humming, into a long, loud, droning noise. Slowly a humped shape rose out of the pit, and the ghost of a beam of light seemed to flicker out from it. Forthwith flashes of actual flame, a bright glare leaping from one to another, sprang from the scattered group of men. It was as if some invisible jet impinged upon them and flashed into white flame. It was as if each man were suddenly and momentarily turned to fire. Then, by the light of their own destruction, I saw them staggering and falling, and their supporters turning to run. I stood staring, not as yet realising that this was death leaping from man to man in that little distant crowd. All I felt was that it was something very strange. An almost noiseless and blinding flash of light, and a man fell headlong and lay still; and as the unseen shaft of heat passed over them, pine trees burst into fire, and every dry furze bush became with one dull thud a mass of flames. And far away towards Knaphill I saw the flashes of trees and hedges and wooden buildings suddenly set alight. It was sweeping round swiftly and steadily, this flaming death, this invisible, inevitable sword of heat. I perceived it coming towards me by the flashing bushes it touched, and was too astounded and stupefied to stir. I heard the crackle of fire in the sand pits and the sudden squeal of a horse that was as suddenly stilled. Then it was as if an invisible yet intensely heated finger were drawn through the heather between me and the Martians, and all along a curving line beyond the sand pits the dark ground smoked and crackled. Something fell with a crash far away to the left where the road from Woking station opens out on the common. Forthwith the hissing and humming ceased, and the black, domelike object sank slowly out of sight into the pit. All this had happened with such swiftness that I had stood motionless, dumbfounded and dazzled by the flashes of light. Had that death swept through a full circle, it must inevitably have slain me in my surprise. But it passed and spared me, and left the night about me suddenly dark and unfamiliar. The undulating common seemed now dark almost to blackness, except where its roadways lay grey and pale under the deep blue sky of the early night. It was dark, and suddenly void of men. Overhead the stars were mustering, and in the west the sky was still a pale, bright, almost greenish blue. The tops of the pine trees and the roofs of Horsell came out sharp and black against the western afterglow. The Martians and their appliances were altogether invisible, save for that thin mast upon which their restless mirror wobbled. Patches of bush and isolated trees here and there smoked and glowed still, and the houses towards Woking station were sending up spires of flame into the stillness of the evening air." ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ An idea that has been stuck in my head for months. It finally came to life with the arrival of my brown grass stems, of course grey or black would be better, but these are not available, so I settled for brown. See notes for info if confused. Enjoy! 2006 Philips' Walita blender "Soft touch" HR2034 or RI2030, RI2034, RI2035 A standard blender from the Viva Collection with an interesting rubber panel made with double injection mould, very used in tooth brushes, cosmetic packages and shavers design, where one or more kind of plastic types are injected directly into another plastic piece, making a single small piece, no joint required. The main casing is the lavender colored rear part, which is the air guide and also stands the switch buttons and the electric motor, so the double injected upper casing is made of a thin wall of PP plastic, as a decorative part easy to replace if necessary. The bigger jar lid also is made of double injected plastic of acrylic SAN and flexible PP plastic around the border. The jar is the same of the previous Walita main blenders with build-in kinves, but with transparent lilac accent for the white version. The unbreakable milky PP jar (in the left) had remained unchanged.
