The Singapore Cold Storage Co Ltd was established in 1903 in Singapore offering refrigerated imported meat primarily to the British residents. The frozen meat was mainly imported from Australia and their importation allowed for the comforts of 'Home' in the tropical climate; roasts, lamb chops, pork cutlet, steaks...instead of the usual 'local mystery meat curries'. With the opening of the Causeway linking Singapore to the Malayan Peninsula in 1909, refrigerated train cars could distribute the frozen meat and dairy products throughout the FMS and Straits Settlements; branches quickly opened in Kuala Lumpur, Ipoh and Penang as well as other places. As its business expanded, so too did Cold Storage's stock of other household and kitchen food items.

The Company's name is still clearly visible as are the initials within the half-moon pediment. This old building has obviously seen better days. In a direct line from those early days, Now renamed "Cold Storage", it remains the leading supermarket chain in Singapore and Malaysia and continues to bring in fresh imported produce.
