China: Growing Old

China: Growing Old

A group of people shuffle majiang chips at the Huang Pu District #1 Old People's Home which opened its doors in 1983 and is government owned and run. The home has 256 beds and is currently full. Applications have been made for increased funding for expansion but nothing has yet been agreed upon. The average age of the residents is 85 years old. China has a rapidly aging population, and is facing a pension problem that is equal to or even surpasses that of Western Europe or North America. Many Chinese citizens are becoming very worried about money as they are growing older, in many cases the money saved in the past doesn't buy much as China becomes more and more expensive. Retired people are beginning to look for more work to cover their expenses and give them any chance at having a savings.
