Built by Raja Rajendranath Mullick in the year 1835, Marble Palace is a private residence, located in north Calcutta. Mullick family still reside in a part of this huge mansion and the rest has been converted into a museum.

The building is typical neoclassical in style. But the plan is that of an affluent bengali home - a large courtyard at the centre sorrounded by four wings of rooms in two floors.

Use of more than fifty different types of marbles in the floor, staircases and walls give the palace its name.

The collection inside includes object d' art from all over the world. Particularly impressive are floor to ceiling Belgian glasses and a wooden statue of Queen Victoria, carved out of a single tree stump, and weighs more than 10 Tonnes!! The palace also boasts of a huge collection of paintings including two each by Sir Joshua Reynolds and Reuben.

The first zoo in India was started within the precincts of this palace by Raja Rajendranath Mullick. The zoo is now reduced to an aviary with some exotic birds for display.

Unlike many old buildings in Calcutta, Marble Palace is very well maintained and attracts lot of tourists al through the year.

Following the earthquake that hit Bhuj in 2001 a huge new temple has been built by the Swaminaryan Hindu sect. It took 7 years to construct and was opened in 2009.

The white marble is covered in intricate carvings and inlay work reminiscent of much older buildings
