Carpet Crawlers There is lambswool under my naked feet. The wool is soft and warm, -gives off some kind of heat. A salamander scurries into flame to be destroyed. Imaginary creatures are trapped in birth on celluloid. The fleas cling to the golden fleece, Hoping they'll find peace. Each thought and gesture are caught in celluloid. There's no hiding in my memory. There's no room to void. The crawlers cover the floor in the red ochre corridor. For my second sight of people, they've more lifeblood than before. They're moving. They're moving in time to a heavy wooden door, Where the needle's eye is winking, closing in on the poor. The carpet crawlers heed their callers: "We've got to get in to get out We've got to get in to get out." There's only one direction in the faces that I see; It's upward to the ceiling, where the chambers said to be. Like the forest fight for sunlight, that takes root in every tree. They are pulled up by the magnet, believing that they're free. The carpet crawlers heed their callers: "We've got to get in to get out We've got to get in to get out." Mild mannered supermen are held in kryptonite, And the wise and foolish virgins giggle with their bodies glowing bright. Through a door a harvest feast is lit by candlight; It's the bottom of a staircase that spirals out of sight. The carpet crawlers heed their callers: "We've got to get in to get out We've got to get in to get out." The porcelain mannikin with shattered skin fears attack. The eager pack lift up their pitchers- they carry all they lack. The liquid has congealed, which has seeped out through the crack, And the tickler takes his stickleback. The carpet crawlers heed their callers: "We've got to get in to get out We've got to get in to get out." - GENESIS, 1974 by Tony Banks, Phil Collins, Peter Gabriel, Steve Hackett, Mike Rutherford Day 148 28 Days Disaster Day TRP Apocalypse Friday I know one shouldn't cry over spilt milk BUT...this is a disaster in in it's own way...picture the scene.....a carpet with milk spilt on it...under the carpet, a super heated floor...now how is that going to smell tomorrow....? Bosc RCA High-Fidelity Bosc Interconnect Unleashes Performance Based on the proven geometry of the Comice Silver Interconnect, the Bosc Interconnect enables high-fidelity sound at a more economical price. Car audio interconnects directly affect the sound quality of any system. The Bosc Interconnect helps to minimize sonic damage by utilizing high-grade materials such as foamed Polyethylene and proven cable geometry borrowed from the Comice Silver Interconnect. Get all of the sound quality out of the rest of your system with the Bosc Interconnect. Low Capacitance Foamed polyethylene “blanks” are twisted with foamed polyethylene insulated conductors to achieve a low capacitance interconnect. By keeping the capacitance low, musical details will be clearer, and listening fatigue is significantly reduced. Pure Copper Signal Conductors 99.99% pure copper, annealed to prevent microcracking, for "audiophile-grade" signal transfer. Don't settle for sound degrading silver-plated copper. Pure copper conductors provide excellent signal transfer and the harmful silver/copper metal interface is eliminated. Triple Noise Reduction with TRIBODead™ Three levels of noise reduction, including Pear Cable’s exclusive TRIBODead™ triboelectric noise killer. TRIBODead™ conductive polymer layer dramatically reduces triboelectric noise generation. Pear Cable is the world's first company to bring this technology to car audio cables. Triboelectric charges are created when vibration causes two different materials to rub against each other in a cable. TRIBODead™ virtually eliminates this noise caused by vehicle vibration for a cleaner sound and lower overall noise floor. Twisted Pair conductors help prevent EMI noise from getting into your sound system. Twisted pair conductors are essential for eliminating alternator whine. Spiral Serve Shield. Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) rejection is accomplished with a spiral served copper shield, grounded at one end only. The metallic shield acting in conjunction with the TRIBODead™ layer offers 100% RFI coverage. Hearst Tower was the first skyscraper to break ground in New York City after September 11, 2001. It is 46 stories tall, The uncommon triangular framing pattern (also known as a diagrid) required 9,500 metric tons (10,480 tons) of structural steel – reportedly about 20% less than a conventional steel frame. Hearst Tower is the first "green" high rise office building completed in New York City, with a number of environmental considerations built into the plan. The floor of the atrium is paved with heat conductive limestone. Polyethylene tubing is embedded under the floor and filled with circulating water for cooling in the summer and heating in the winter. Rain collected on the roof is stored in a tank in the basement for use in the cooling system, to irrigate plants and for the water sculpture in the main lobby. 85% of the building's structural steel contains recycled material. Overall, the building has been designed to use 26% less energy than the minimum requirements for the city of -waterfall built with thousands of glass panels, which cools and humidifies the lobby air. Finding a New Feminism This collection of original essays by prominent scholars of political theory contends that contemporary ideas of feminism have reached a theoretical impasse because they are unable to reconcile tensions between principles such as equality and difference. Finding A New Feminism places modern concepts of feminism within the historical context of political thought and uses feminism as a lens through which to examine the strengths and weaknesses of liberal democracy, both in practice and in theory. By reconsidering classic works of literature, philosophy, and political theory, the authors identify certain deficiencies of liberal democracy but do not call for its complete abandonment. Instead, they present a new theory of feminism that fosters the reconciliation of conflicting and competing principles, as well as the private and public realms of women's lives. This is compulsory reading for students and scholars of political and feminist theory. (11) Harvey Nichols The Harvey Nichols store out the back of Dundrum Town Centre. West Montrose Covered Bridge The West Montrose covered bridge is recognized as a historic site by Ontario's Archeological & Historic Sites Board. It is Ontario's last remaining covered bridge and has a 198' span across the Grand River. Visitors come from all over the world to see and photograph this picturesque bridge. The roof over the bridge served to protect the large timbers and trusses from the elements, and this is also the reason the bridge is still standing after more than 100 years. Uncovered wooden bridges have a life span of only 10 to 15 years because exposure to rain causes unprotected joints to rot in summer and freeze in the winter; the hot sun causes the wooden planks to dry and curl. Applying oil and tar to preserve the floor made the surface slippery when wet. Horses fear rushing water and would often become spooked as they approached bridges. A horse will trot up to the opening of a covered bridge and clip-clop through, reassured by the side walls and the light at the end of the tunnel. The bridge was built in 1881 and underwent major repairs in 1999. Light traffic is still crossing the bridge daily including horse and buggies. The bridge is often referred to as "The Kissing Bridge" because it is enclosed and the soft light provides a feeling of intimacy for the romantic. The blue sign erected by Ontario Heritage Foundation, to the right of the bridge opening reads: This structure, the only remaining covered bridge in Ontario was designed by John Bear in 1880, on the authority of Woolwich Township Council, to replace an earlier bridge over the Grand River. Built a year later by John and his brother, Benjamin, the 198-foot bridge was covered to protect the wooden flooring and frame against the elements. Known locally as the Kissing Bridge, it later came under the jurisdiction of Waterloo County. In 1937 the province assumed responsibility for the Guelph-Elmira Road, including the West Montrose Bridge, and its floor and sub-structure were subsequently rebuilt and reinforced. No Sensitivity Shot Number Two of the Lyrics Project is to the song No Sensitivity by Jimmy Eay World. LOOK AT THIS BIG. I love this band and this song is one of my fav songs ever so I was pleased to shoot it. I also love the line "The world don't spin without you, can't believe you're standing still" we were also going to include the line "I'm taking my kisses back, I want my kisses back from you" which would explain why Will (on the floor) is covered in kisses. The basis of this shot was Maria (the girl who is a blur) was going to be running around Will who would be stationary mid-shot. I quite like this, I don't think it's to literal but it gets the feel of the lyric. Mykinesturur About the name Mykines There are many explanations of the origin of the name and spelling of Mykines. The name of Mykines can be spelled in many different ways: Mykines, Mykiness, Mikines, Mikjinees,Mikjunes, Mygenes, Mygen?s and Myggen?s. The oldest known way of spelling is Mykiness and is from around 1400 and the name is said to origin from the celtic word Muc-innis, which should mean "the island of pigs". The name Mykines has also been said to origin from "dung", the "dung foreland", as explained by the story about floating islands and the man from Vagoy, who threw dung from bulls on the floating island. But the first part of the word, "Myki" has also been explained as many forelands, originating from the faroese word miki?, meaning many, a lot of, enough of. Lucas Debes uses in his book: "F?roernes beskrivelse" (A Description of the Faroes), from 1673 the word Myggen?s, which remind much of the Danish "myg", mosquito. But that name has probably nothing to do with "normal" mosquitoes, as no such live on Mykines. But one can be stuck by "mitter", a very tiny, 1-2 mm long species of mosquitoes, which can be found on Mykines. So one can be stuck on Mykines and one can also be bitten by "puffin louse", which is no specie of louse, but a sort of tick. J. Chr. Svabo uses in his: "Indberetninger fra en rejse i F?roe 1781 - 1782" (Report from a journey in the Faroes 1781 - 1782), the word Mygenes and also mention the following spellings: Mikjinees, Mykines and Myggen?s, but without trying to give any explanation of the origin of the words. In beginning of the 19.th century, the word Mikines was often used and can still be seen on the nameplate of older boats as well on the paintings of Samuel Joensen, who added Mikines to his name as an artist. Nowadays the word Mykines is the only one used. Floating islands The name Mykines is not to be found in "F?ringe Saga" but several stories or legends are known. According to one, Mykines should have been a floating islands, an islands which restless were floating around on the open ocean, as other Faroese islands also should have been doing. A legend explains both how Mykines stopped being floating around and also how it got its name. The fear of the great whales have been widespread among faroese fishing men and the legend tells: A man from Vagoy always carried bulls dung with him, when fishing, to throw it on the water to frighten the big whales, in case they came close to his boat. Once fishing west of Vagoy, a big island suddenly appeared in the mist. He saved his fishing gears and rowed to the island, but before he went on the land he threw some dung on the island and in the same moment, the island stopped being floating around and from there after have been called "dung ness", muc ness, later transformed to Mikjunes and Mykines. That there have been legends of floating islands is easy to understand, if one ever has been standing at a Faroese coast and seen how the tidal currents are passing by with great speed. What is moving, the water or the land? On Mykines this is very easy seen from Mykines Holm's south western corner. Here the tidal current "Strongurin", can be seen reaching out south from the stacks and the Stone, when the water is moving westward. Especially at spring tide, it can be impressive, with the water passing by at a speed of about 9 Knots. One can really get the impression of being on board a fast moving vessel. Another legend tells this way: A giant would like to live on the Faroes and especially he liked some of the islands, but he thought that the ones he liked the most were too small and he therefore tried to assemble then to form one greater island. Koltur was the first he took possession of and he thought it had a fine position, so he let it be where is was. Then he moved to Skuoy and intended to pull it close to Koltur, but the people living there asked him if it really could be his intention to live on Skuoy, as it was known that the island was born by a little calf. When the giant heard this, he wasn't interested any more to possess that island and thanked the people living there so much for the information and even gave them great gifts. Then he carried on. North of the greater islands he then found another little island and the qualities of the island pleased him and he then began towing it south towards Koltur, but when he came north of Vagoy he was exhausted and even though he tried for one whole week, he didn't manage to move the island any further. Annoyed he said. As I have succeed to get the island above the sea it will also be possible for me to get it under water again. Because he didn't grudge any other that triumph. It is still being told, that sometimes an island can be seen north of Vagoy, with mountains, valleys and waterfalls. Most often it is men from Sorvagur, who have seen the island, when Jack Ruby On November 22, 1963, President John F Kennedy was riding in a Presidential Motorcade with the 1st Lady Jacqueline when a shot rang out while they were riding through Dealey Plaza. People say they heard 2 gunshots but they only could prove one shot from the 6th floor of the book depository. The shot hit President Kennedy in the head and killed him. A few hours later, a man was arrested at a local movie theater and charged with the assassination of the President. That alledged assassin was Lee Harvey Oswald. He was alledged because Oswald would never make it to court because he was shot and killed 2 days later leaving the police station by Jack Ruby. This would put Ruby in one of the biggest conspiracy ever, the JFK assassination. These are the facts of Ruby. He was born in Chicago, Il in 1911 as Jack Rubenstein. After moving to Dallas for a better life, he would change his last name to Ruby in 1947. While in Dallas, Ruby opened up a nightclub. Ruby was seen as a scary man who always carried a handgun wherever he went. On Nov 24, 1963, Ruby was passing the Dallas Police Station when he parked his car and got out. He would later say it was unplanned and on a whim, but Ruby marched into the station posing as a news reporter. When Oswald came walking out of the police station in handcuffs, Ruby pulled out his Colt Cobra.38 handgun and shot Oswald in the stomach at 11:38 am. Oswald would die on the way to the hospital. Ruby would be tackled and arrested with the murder. He would be founded guilty and sentenced to life before he would appeal. These are the theories of his inolvement in the assassination. Ruby was seen with the known associated of the Italian Mafia in Dallas. The mafia had ties with anit-Castro Cubans who had admitted to hating the President for not supporting them during the Bay of Pigs. Oswald, who lived in Russia for 3 uears after going AWOL from the army, was hired bu Russian mob. They were mad at Kennedy for the Cuban Missile Crisis and hired Oswald to shoot Kennedy. Then, they hired Ruby to shoot Oswald to shut him up. Some beleive Ruby worked with Oswald and might of been the second shooter that was never found. He then shot Oswald to shut him up so they would never found out his involvement. He was also known to be an associate of Crime families in Chicago. This included Sam Giancana and Jimmy Hoffa. Giacncana was the crime boss of the Chicago Outfit which was once ran by Al Capone and Jimmy Hoffa was a teamster from Chicago. Hoffa supposidly wanted Ruby to hire police officers to kill Oswald, but after that failed, Hoffa ordered Ruby to finish off the job or Ruby would be killed. None of these thories were ever proven and just speculated. Oswald never got his day in court and even though Ruby was convicted of killing Oswald, he always said that he did it on a whim and was never planned. Ruby would be sentenced to life in prison after a 6 month trial. He would soon appeal the conviction, but it would never make it back to court. Ruby died of pulmonary embolism on Jan 3, 1967 at Parkland Hospital in Dallas. Parkland Hospital is the same hospital Oswald died at and Kennedy was pronounced dead. Ruby was taken back to Chicago where he would be buried next to his parents in Westlawn Cemetery in the subburb of Norridge. STEAM HARD FLOOR : STEAM HARD
STEAM HARD FLOOR : DIFFERENT TYPES OF FLOORS. Steam Hard Floor
Lego "Big Boy" 4-8-8-4 Steam Locomotive Well, its finally ready for public consumption! So here it is... This Big Boy features: - Lego Power Functions motors provide the moving force. There are 4 (yes,...four) M sized PF motors (that are barely) stuffed into the boiler. (I would have prefered 2 XL PF motors instead of 4 M's, but believe it or not, no matter how hard I tried, the much larger XL PF motors were just a couple plates too wide to fit inside this boiler design.) There are 2 M motors connected to each of the 2 articulated sets of 8 drivers. The (rechargable) battery box is placed near the front of the tender, while the receiver is hidden amongst the tender's load of coal. - The Battery box and on/off switch is quickly accessed though an easily-removed "gate" at the front of the tender. The battery rests on floor tiles and between an inside rail arrangement that holds it in place, but still allows the battery to slide right forward for easy access when the gate is removed, enabling the battery to be either turned on/off, or replaced with a different one if it is time to charge it. - The driving rods and pistons are fully functional. (I wanted to see that thing move while it moves, you know what I mean? :-) ) - All 4 wheels of the leading truck are fully functional, and all 4 wheels steer when it traverses through the curves. (That, without a doubt, was the hardest thing to figure out how to do on this moc. While there were lots of other areas on the Big Boy that were a pain in the a-- to model, a 4-wheel-steering leading truck that cleared the pistons and front drivers of an articulated wheel set made me scratch my head for a l-o-n-g time.) - The engine's cab and tender are 8 studs wide, and the boiler is approximately 7.5 studs wide. Even though these measurements might suggest that the scale of this engine is at 8 wide, in all actuality, because of the gigantic dimensions of a full size Big Boy, this moc is probably closer to being in 6-wide scale (or possibly maybe even 7 wide scale) then in 8 wide scale. (Especially when the Big Boy is placed next to and compared with most mocs that are modeled in 6-wide. But I am open to hearing everyone's else's opinions on this Big Boy moc's 'actual' scale. I am kind of curious as to what everybody thinks on that subject.) - The moc is completely able to negotiate all curves and switches. (I built this thing to be able to play with it, after all! LOL. Locomotives aren't any fun at all if they are just sitting on a shelf being looked at.) I have a fairly tight layout, with many close-placed switches, and I have somehow managed (after much repeated rebuilding, b----ing, and track testing) to make that bazillion-wheeled monster go through corners and switches successfully. (I did have to move some of my buildings back and away from the corners of the track a stud or two in order to able to accommodate the wide swinging boiler, however.) I have not tried this engine on flex track, yet- I wonder how it'll do riding on that stuff? - The front coupler is fully functional (but rarely used). - Total model length from the front engine coupler to rear tender coupler is just a few tenths of an inch short of 31 inches. (I was hoping the thing would make it to a full yard long when I was done building it, but because I like building train mocs that are scaled to the driver size, it didn't scale right at 36 inches in length. But how cool would it have been able to say "This engine is a yard long and built entirely of Lego!"? LOL. ) - I'd like to believe that the moc is about 97% done (but you know how that goes-- nothing you build is ever really DONE done.) There is a small bit of plumbing to do yet, a wrong colored headlight holder (it needs to be black), and stickers to do yet. Part of my hope is that I will get some good build feedback, and if anybody has any ideas/suggestions for improvements, please fire away. :-) - The only non-lego part on the moc is the use of metal wire inside the flexable tube used for handrails to help maintain the correct shape of the flextube bends. (I do love using BBB wheels on my train mocs, but in this circumstance I wanted to power this thing using the actual drivers as the motive force, and because of that, I needed to use Lego's rubberband-grooved drivers for improved traction.) Sex, Drugs & Hob Nobs "I used to do a little but a little wouldn't do it so the little got more and more" Taken on his Birthday, 23rd July, our tribute to the great, top hat wearing, master of the axe, Slash! What was supposed to be a photo shoot for some self-promotion shots, for Robs guitar teaching, turned in to us having a laugh, and using an old studio photo of Slash (polaroid resting against the right boot) for inspiration, we set about shooting a tribute with a touch of “British-ness”, the Tea and Biscuits, thrown in. Strobist: Main image - 430EX II Bounced into white umbrella high just off camera right. YN-560 Bounced into Silver reflector camera left. Steam - First shot, YN-560 kettle right and slightly behind the wall through the doorway to prevent fallout on the wall, forward Light blocked by black reflector cover. Second shot, YN-560 through snoot kettle right, aimed higher to get more of the steam. Additional shots - YN-560 through snoot aimed at the front of the cup/biscuits, hat and Polaroid. Edits: Due to only having two lights the shot had to be taken in stages and composed together in Photoshop later. Merged shots through lightening layer mode. Steam layers added with layer masks to remove light fall off on the kettle and floor. Tweaking of levels. Texture layer added. And black and white layer added with hard light to boost contrast. Rockefeller Center: RCA Building Midtown Manhattan Nearly 300 men began excavation of the RCA Building in July 1931..Steelwork commenced early the next year and the building was completed thirteen months later. Its architectural design was the result of several conditioning factors. On the most rudimentary level was the accommodation of varied tenant requirements and the maximum utilization of available land. "he solution was the combination of three different buildings into a single structure (more than 1,000 feet long) which spans the full block between Rockefeller Plaza and Sixth Avenue. On the east, taking full advantage of light and air, are the 70-story corporate offices of RCA. Additional office space was provided along Sixth Avenue in the sixteen story slab of the RCA Building West. The midblock section, much less desirable for office space, was allotted to NBC's broadcasting studios which needed no windows but only large amounts of layered horizontal space. The technical specifications of this unit were particularly exacting. In order to insure soundproofing all the studios were designed with "floating" wails, floors and ceilings, suspended and insulated from the building's structural frame. Among the other factors that conditioned RCA's design were the New York building Code and the introduction of new elevators whose high speed reduced the number required for building service. Equally important were the developer's demand for profitable return and the unwavering functionalism of the Associated Architects, tempered by a touch of romance from Raymond Hood. because of the size of the site and the Associated Architects' plan to build low-rise Fifth Avenue units backed by an open plaza, they had considerable freedom in determining the mass of their tower. They were encouraged by John B. Todd 'who was concerned that the air rights (which were not transferable to the north or south blocks) be utilized to their full potential. At length the architects designed a 70-story tower whose facade rises sheer for 33 stories before expressing the elimination of three elevator banks with gentle setbacks. The tower stood in marked contrast to most contemporaneous skyscrapers where zoning setbacks created a wedding cake effect. The RCA Building thus stands as an early example of the emerging architectural slab. The form would be more completely —although not totally — realized at Rockefeller Center with construction of the One Rockefeller Plaza (formerly Time-Life) Building in 10 37 and the Ten Rockefeller Plaza (formerly Eastern Airlines Building in 1938-39, both of which sat on plinths related to pedestrian scale. Slabs had been periodically proposed since 1912, but rarely executed.[5] They were approached recently, and most significantly, by Raymond Hood for the Daily News 1930 and and McGraw-Hill (1931) buildings, both of which are designated New York City Landmarks. Ironically, it was Hood who lobbied most forcefully for stylistically regressive setbacks on the RCA. In keeping with his intention to build prime quality business space, developer John R. Todd insisted that no office be more than 27 1/2 feet from a window (the maximum at which virtural light and air can be adequately provided). By contrast, many contemporaneous office structures were built to maximum girth leaving dark and unventilated spaces at their cores. The Associated Architects responded to Todd's requirement by grouping high speed elevators into central banks and surrounding them on each floor with a corridor and ring of offices of the requires 27-1/2 foot depth. It totally outmoded the wedding cake arrangement where elevators were grouped on either side of a long central corridor, forced deep into the building by the zoning regulations which required towers (and therefore the elevators which serviced those towers) to be set back from the street. The arrangement at RCA provided more than two million square feet, of prime office space, distinguishing it for years as the world's largest office building in floor area. The pure geometry of RCA's functional slab was paradoxically disturbed by Hood's desire to give it full rational expression. After heated controversy among the Associated Architects, he finally succeeded in introducing setbacks at each point of elevator elimination, or, as Hood said, "cut[ting] out all the bad space and let[ting] the building stand on its own. The progressive narrowing of building mass maintained the 27-1/2 foot relationship of office to building core and clearly expressed the reduced number of elevator shafts required for the upper floors (42 at ground level narrowing to ten on the 53rd floor). Honest functionalist expressions on both the north and south sides of the RCA Building, the setbacks are pure romance on its east facade where their primary function is to dramatize the soaring 850 foot tapered shaft. This quality is exaggerated when the building is viewed, as it invariably is, through the sunken Plaza and l The Forest Runner (Zoom Zoom) This bird was a lot of fun. While in pursuit of a Common Yellowthroat on a cliff-like region of the Ramble, I spotted this little bird walking around some rocks below. I could tell that it was a thrush of some sort, but couldn't identify the species at the time. It seemed to notice that it had grabbed my attention, and it sauntered over to a nearby bush, disappearing inside of it. The Yellowthroat appeared shortly afterward in the vicinity where this bird had disappeared, so I made my way down there. The Yellowthroat disappeared once I reached the area. Glancing around, I spotted this thrush reappear, walking at a fairly slow pace across the rocks. It was fairly close to me, and as there were no branches or bushes between us to ruin the shot, I excitedly directed my lens in its direction and looked through the viewfinder. I fired off one shot, and suddenly found it very difficult to keep the bird centered in the frame, but it wasn't initially obvious why. Most birds are very obvious when they're running: some will hop; others will frantically flap their wings as their little legs scamper; and still others will duck their heads down and charge forward. Not this bird! Still watching me and keeping its head level, the bird had suddenly picked up acceleration. "Zooming" is how I would describe this bird as it ran - it was just moving moving faster. Upon realizing this strange quality, I couldn't help but smile as the bird zoomed toward the nearest bush. It later re-emerged and, still cautiously watching me, walked at an even pace across the forest floor between me and the Common Yellowthroat. Photographed with an Olympus E-3 and Sigma "Bigma" 50-500mm at 500mm (1000mm equivalent in 35mm film terms), using a monopod and in-body image stabilization for support. Distance to subject (according to EXIF information, which may be inaccurate) was approximately 4.3 meters, or 14 feet. This photo has only been cropped to alter the aspect ratio (pixels on the bottom were removed) - no "digital zooming" was performed. This is a Louisiana Waterthrush (possibly a Northern Waterthrush?), as seen between "the oven" and "the peak" in the Ramble region of Central Park, New York City. (According to Cornell's birding guide, the Louisiana Waterthrush differs from the Northern Waterthrush in the following manner: "Northern usually has stripes on throat, a slightly smaller bill, a thinner and off-white or cream eyestripe that does not extend as far onto the nape, less pink legs, and a more yellowish wash on the underparts.") Fascinated by the history and culture of France, he commissioned a French architect, Gabriel Hippolyte Destailleur, to build him a Renaissance-style chateau, based on those in the Loire Valley, and employed a French garden designer, Elie Laine to lay out the grounds. Like other members of his family he wanted a retreat outside London and chose Buckinghamshire because several of his cousins already had houses there (it was known as "Rothschildshire" in the late 19th century). The Manor was only used for weekends in the summer months, for Ferdinand's famous house parties, and was the last word in luxury with electric lights, lifts and under-floor heating.
