the "new" boat Launching from Grand Traverse harbor about 8 miles north of the island. This boat is perfect for the island for a number of reasons. It is an 18 foot aquasport with a high freeboard, a deep V and is a time-tested coastal design. It also was a good deal. We found it on craigslist in Flint, Michigan, for $4,000 dollars. We ended up offering the seller $2,500, which he took. What luck. We couldn't believe it. It seemed too good to be true. Next we trailered it up to the Keweenaw with the help of Andrew's father, put it in the water and took off for the island. About 400 feet from the harbor entry I told Andrew, excited to get moving, "alright, give it the gas", and he looked at me a bit cocked and replied, "I am". Bummer! We were going 5 miles per hour and the engine sounded funny. Lake Superior is, of course, not the lake to experiment with a questionable engine on so we hung our heads, turned the boat around and headed back to port. We took the boat to the local marina and waited for a few days for a diagnosis. The bad news: we had a cracked block and an engine without compression in two cylinders. The motor was beyond repair. Alas we were more or less boatless and went back to relying on the old starcraft which up to that point had been reliable mechanically but undersized for the lake we were on. It was definitely the low point of the trip and as of right now we are still trying to work out the motor dilemma. (Anybody have a spare motor in their garage?). In the end, in an effort to be economical with our Kickstarter funds, we got burned. Very disheartening. 2005 PRIUS: Our New Car We finally got the Prius after shopping around and waiting one month. It's a Package 6 (for the Prius folks), and it's giving us 50 mpg on I-5. The Prius replaced our 1999 VW Passat, which was a total lemon and a huge financial loss--it died after 107,000 miles when the cylinder head cracked...sadly, the VW died after we got it out of the VW shop for repairs just 3 months earlier. We'll never buy a VW again. On the other hand, I still drive the 18-year old 535is BMW, which has over 300,000 miles. We hope to get just as many miles on the Prius. Broken pipe We've had record cold here for a while. I had some faucets dripping to prevent freezing, but this line, which goes to a couple of outside hose bibs, froze anyway. We only discovered it two days later when it got above freezing. Fortunately, Jo heard it break and we got the water shut off quickly, so interior damage was minimal. If we hadn't been home, it would have been a disaster. You can see that the pipe had ruptured and been repaired already, before we bought the house. The pipe was broken in several places. We never use those hose bibs, so I told the plumber to cap off the pipe. I called one plumbing outfit and their earliest appointment was in five days. We were getting ready to move into a motel, when Shawna told us about another outfit that she liked. I called and the lady said that they had a plumber working nearby and he could come in an hour or so. It was more like three hours, but we were very grateful to get it fixed so promptly. About 40,000 homes in northern NM were without heat and many had broken pipes. Some of them still have no natural gas service. Sink Repair Snafu Our sink has been dripping for several months, both under the sink and the faucet itself. I've been trying to get the sink fixed for months. About 2 or 3 times the handyman would come, look under the sink and then go away. Then, he came and "fixed" it. This video is the result. Makes me regret ever trying to get it repaired. The sink was eventually fixed properly once they sent a competent repairman. FOOD ADDITIVES This artistic installation is dedicated to food additives and is in the shape of a question mark. This is made up of a alternation: 1) of names of diseases printed in red and followed by question marks (according to some research, these diseases could be caused by food additives), 2) food product packaging painted in white and covered with short presentations of a few food additives. These presentations are printed in various colors. The full stop on the question mark is covered with words used concerning food additives in a book on organic food. Food additives The food additives in this image were associated with hyper activity and reduced concentration levels in children. Check the labels of foods you buy to see just how many contain them. blowby-993 Meet Blowby, a 1988 Jeep Cherokee. I bought this thing for $500 years ago for no rational reason. I was bored and kept justifying it by saying "I'd be crazy not to!" as my friends shook their heads. It has a 5-speed manual transmission, high/low gears, and 4WD. I couldn't refuse. I nursed the thing home, fixed the brakes (sledgehammer, prybar), fixed the exhaust leaks (tig welder, cursing), and cleaned it up a whole lot (rain). In thousands of (unforgiving) miles, including oil changes, I've put about $250 into this thing for maintenance and repairs. This beast is glorious. The paint is...not a factory job. Or even slightly professional. Blowby used to be blue, but the color was faded and falling off everywhere...It couldn't get any worse, so I figured I'd pay homage to the Willys Jeeps of olde with a custom paint job. I bought 8 cans of Krylon Olive Drab, taped everything up, and just sprayed. The stars are a geometric triumph--highschool math finally paid off--I sat there with some string, a pen, and a ruler, and somehow got everything lined up. The, ah, wheels are "custom" as well (one can of black Krylon). They were a gift from a local guy who didn't want to drag them all the way to the trash. The motor is 2.5 liters of glory. When all four cylinders are firing, she purrs like a walrus. Blowby got its name from its valve guides...When the top end gets tired, oil can slip past and sputter up into the airbox--blowby. When I pulled the head off, I'm pretty sure a family of possum scampered out. I hit it with a full can of carb cleaner, painted it red (lipstick on the ol' pig), and threw it back on. The blowby problem was mostly solved with a few changes of clean, heavy oil, but I added that custom, ah, oil catcher just in case...You could put a bullet in this motor, and it wouldn't die. I've tried. One time I left a wrench on the battery while I was monkeying around on the thing. When I began driving around, the wrench slipped down and got caught in the serpentine belt--shredded it to threads. When I pulled over and lifted the hood to see what all the smoke was fussing about, the wrench was melted and glowing...Took it to work the next day, grabbed a new belt on the way home. No prob. I moved to NYC two years ago, and it just didn't seem like it was worth the hassle of selling. I held onto it, figuring it would die soon enough and I could just get rid of it, guilt-free...Since then it's been on Martha's Vinyard, all over the north east, Brooklyn for months, up near Canada...The damn thing won't die. Snow, rain, dirt, mud, jumps, running into things...No matter what I do, it just won't die. It currently lives in the woods of Connecticut--Nobody I know there will let me keep it where the neighbors might see! I mean, what's the problem? The silver car is my father's mint-perfect 993. Still in bed. I have painful tennis elbow (Lateral Epicondylitis /inflammation of the outside elbow bone) in end of May. Ice can sometimes be a good pain relief and I am working with pain because I extremely love my job. I went to my first doctor and she tells me to buy support. Pain did not go away but I still can work and see the second doctor and she told me to meet hand surgeon. He gave me injection and 6 weeks sick leave and I refuse to take it. I say I will work and treat it. He told me that if I work my hand would be getting worst. If I return to work during the treatment, he will stop treating me. I get first injection, which I don’t know what it is. I was fine and drive back home. After 3 hours, my elbow is going to explode. I call doctor next morning and said that I have great amount of pain. He said yes it is normal because of Local anesthetic wear out. I went second time to get another injection but he didn’t do it and he do not give me pain killer no more. I am going to receive next week and I think he will not give me no more injection. Doctor told me do nothing during treatment and I did not open my PC and did not visit your streams. I told that my elbow is getting worst after the injection. He said Good. I hope he mean it well. My physician is specializing in surgery and Finnish doctors are good. 15 Mar 2010, The famous football player underwent surgery to repair his torn left Achilles tendon was treated by specialist Dr. Sakari Orava in Turku. Next week is my last visit to doctor’s clinic and I can’t wait to go back to my beloved job. Technical Difficulties My computer screen has been especially ornery lately. I've had this problem with my computer since the beginning. A repair job three years ago, in which the monitor was replaced, seemed to solve the problem temporarily. But (as I figure it) something about the backlight still has trouble connecting. My screen itself still works fine, as is evidenced by the log-in box that barely shows through a dark haze. At first the backlight took several minutes to come on, so that I could see my screen. Today it took almost 4 hours and has been getting worse over time. Yesterday I placed an order for a new (well, reconditioned-new) computer -- especially since an out-of-warranty repair on this one would cost almost as much. I have tried (a) cooling the computer with fans, (b) tweaking the screen back and forth, (c) toggling the light controls available to me, (d) holding down the Function key for at least 10 seconds (as recommended by tech support), (e) toggling the external monitor control (ditto), (f), running PC-Doctor (ditto), (g) changing my screen saver defaults, (h) shaking the computer (and hearing pretty chiming sounds), and, most recently, (i) slapping the keys. If there were such a thing as Computer Protective Services, I'd be in jail by now. As soon as I can get the correct cable, I'll try hooking my computer up to an external monitor and see if I can solve the problem that way. Meanwhile, I look forward to the arrival of my new workhorse and am keeping my fingers crossed that it will be a friendly steed. Rock Creek Cemetery - mausoleum's stained glass window Do you just love the face on this one? I think it's beautiful. See this image on some items at zazzle.com, under the name of tiz_herself. Note on all of these stained glass windows - I discovered that many of the mausoleums had these windows in the back wall, so I had to aim the camera through whatever decorative metal work there was on the doors, up the ISO, and hold my breath. I couldn't really get a good angle on any of them, which is why some of them, like this one, are cut off. But I consider these to be a real find!! Louis Tiffany (Stained glass window) Louis Comfort Tiffany (February 18, 1848 – January 17, 1933) was an American artist and designer who worked in the decorative arts and is best known for his work in stained glass. He is the American artist most associated with the Art Nouveau and Aesthetic movements.
