Henri Cartier-Bresson (1908-2004)

The photographer to emulate for this assignment is none other than Henri Cartier-Bresson. Most of you have heard of him at one point or another. He’s one of the greatest photographers of all time. Widely called the father of modern photojournalism, Henri Cartier-Bresson traveled the world and covered many major events on assignment. He viewed the camera as an extension of the eye.

HCB is, of course, also known as the master of street photography. In 1952 he published a book called The Decisive Moment. It contained photos that captured not just any moment, but a decisive moment. A moment of spontaneous movement or change. A witty or telling perspective. A moment of interest. Henri Cartier-Bresson had an amazing talent for capturing fleeting, unnoticed moments, and he had an exceptional eye for composition. He didn't crop his photos.

The decisive moment became Henri Cartier-Bresson’s art and style. In his own words, the decisive moment is "the simultaneous recognition in a fraction of a second of the significance of an event, as well as the precise organization of forms that give that event its proper expression." (source)

He said: "Photography is not like painting. There is a creative fraction of a second when you are taking a picture. Your eye must see a composition or an expression that life itself offers you, and you must know with intuition when to click the camera. That is the moment the photographer is creative. Oop! The Moment! Once you miss it, it is gone forever." (source)

HCB is also known for other achievements. Along with Robert Capa and other photographers, Henri Cartier-Bresson co-founded Magnum Photos in 1947, a prestigious international photo agency that is owned by its members. The agency is still going strong. HCB didn’t dedicate his entire life to photography. He also loved to paint and draw, and he directed films. For this assignment it is our task to walk the streets in the footsteps of Henri Cartier-Bresson and photograph people we don't know (no photos of family, friends or acquaintances). The photos need to be candid. Let's see if we can train our eyes to find and frame a decisive moment. As primer says in this PCA thread, "Street photography is not about snapping a picture of the first person on the street and going back home. The best work of this genre engages the viewer and gives insight to the subject's world." Try not to use a telephoto lens. Photograph in public places like streets and parks—it's perfectly legal. (Malls, shops, and many parking lots are privately owned places.) Use your best judgment and have fun!

WIT: Yesterday I was assisting an other photographer in teaching a Macro Workshop. I found it interesting that this particular person had actually placed the camera strap around his neck even when working using a tripod. I hope that he never needs to step back quickly. The second thing that I found very interesting is the quality of tripod that most new camera owners are willing to place their expensive equipment on.

I can't say that any one of his photos inspired me. To be honest I believe that he was mostly interested in people simply being themselves, and his best picture seemed to depict just that. An observation of life being lived. That itself is inspi

The map outlines the essential strategy of Operation Market-Garden, a disastrous Allied campaign which took place in September of 1944. It was the brainchild of Field Marshal Bernard Law Montgomery, who sought a way to outflank the Ruhr and cross the North German Plain all the way to Berlin, and thereby shorten the war. (And, not incidentally, to capture some glory for himself.) The plan involved capturing three crucial bridges over the Waal, Maas, and Rhine rivers, at or near the cities of Eindhoven, Nijmegen, and Arnhem, respectively. The bridges were to be captured and held by airborne troops dropped in by parachute, after which armored units were to speed across the captured bridges, and then the rest of the way across Holland into Germany.

The bridges at Eindhoven and Nijmegen were captured, but the British troops failed in their effort to hold the one at Arnhem; hence, the phrase "A Bridge Too Far," which became the title of Cornelius Ryan's book about the campaign and the 1977 movie based on the book. The Arnhem campaign has been widely criticized by military historians ever since, many of whom believe it actually prolonged the war in Europe by several months. Although in retreat by the late summer of 1944, the Germans proved themselves to be very adept at small-unit tactics, which were improvised when necessary by groups of soldiers not under direct command, and who in fact did not comprise any recognizable sort of military unit at all. Moreover, the seizure of the bridges was assigned to paratroopers, who of course are unable to go into battle with any sort of heavy equipment or weaponry. And finally, the "Garden" portion of the operation -- "Market" was the airborne component -- failed to take into account that it would involve long supply lines and badly exposed flanks, which of course the Germans exploited fully.
