View over Richmond from up above on Castle Walk RICHMOND, a parish in the wapentake of Gilling West, and liberty of Richmondshire; 8 miles from Leyburn; 10 from Reeth; and 16 from Northallerton. The town stands on an eminence, boldly rising from the Swale, which winds in a semi-circular form at the foot of the castle. In the time of Leland, this was a walled town, and in the wall there had been three gates:- French gate,- to the north; Finkle gate, to the west ; and Barr gate, leading to the Bridge over the Swale; but even then the gates were down, and their sites were marked only by vestiges. Alan Rufus, one of the adventurers who accompanied William the Conqueror, in his descent on England, and who commanded the rear guard of his army in the battle of Hastings, was the founder of this town and Castle, which, though seated on a rock, and on the verge of the moors, received the name of "Rich-mount", on account of the partiality of its lords. Alan, who was the nephew of the Conqueror, and afterwards became Earl of Bretagne, received from his uncle the title of the Earl of Richmond. The Charter for dispossessing Earl Edwyn, the Saxon lord, of his Yorkshire estates, and conferring them upon Alan, was granted at the siege of York, in the year 1069, and is couched in these brief but comprehensive terms I, WILLIAM, surnamed the Bastard, do give and grant to thee Alan, my nephew, Earl of Bretagne, and to thy heirs for ever, all the towns and lands which lately belonged to Earl Edwyn in Yorkshire, with the Knights fees, churches, and other privileges and customs, in as free and honourable a manner as the said Edwyn held them. Given from the siege before York. It appears from Madox's history of the Exchequer, that this grant conveyed 140 Knight's fees, each fee containing 12 plowlands, or 640 acres; and Richmondshire, the seat of these ample possessions, contains 104 parishes. This jurisdiction comprehends the five wapentakes of Halikeld, Gilling East and Gilling West, and Hang East and Hang West. It has the Tees for its northern boundary the Wiske to the east; the Ure to the south; and the wapentakes of Claro and Staincliffe to the west. The foundations of Richmond, and of its Castle, were laid about the year 1087, and this archdeaconry, like all the archdeaconries in the Cathedral of York, was founded in the time of Archbishop Thomas, who sat from 1070 to 1100. In fixing upon a site for his castle, which was to serve at once for a place of residence and a station of defence, Earl Alan selected the strongest point in his domain, and laid the foundations on the almost perpendicular rock on the left bank of the Swale. To increase its security, his successors, Alan the younger, and Stephen Fergeaunt, encompassed it with a high wall, about 800 yards in length, embattled and flanked with lofty towers. To the south, the west, and the east, the fortress was rendered impregnable by the combined operation of nature and art; and on the north, which was the weakest side, Conan, the fourth Earl of Richmond, built the great square tower, or keep, in 1146, the walls of which, with their pinnacled watch towers, from their extraordinary thickness, have braved the dilapidating hand of time, and retain at this day their original dimensions and stability. From this tower, which is 99 feet high, with walls 11 feet thick, the defenders of the castle had a commanding view of the surrounding country; and in case of attack, all the movements of their enemies became as visible to them, as if they had been made in the court yard of the fortress. To strengthen this approach, an outwork, called the Barbican, was erected, which defended the gate and the draw-bridge at the principal entrance. On the top of the walls, and on the flat roofs of the buildings, stood the defenders of the castle, and from thence discharged their arrows and missiles, according to the usages of war, before Schwartz, the German priest, had facilitated the work of destruction by the invention of gunpowder (in 1320). A tower, about 14 feet deep, which probably served as a staircase to the Scolland, so called from the name of the high steward in the time of Earl Alan, still remains; and tradition, which is apt to deal in the marvellous, has made it the entrance to a subterraneous passage from the castle to the priory of St. Martin, under the bed of the Swale! The Earls, who were the friends, and of the family of princes, lived here in almost regal style; and the Scolland, which wad a hall 72 feet long by 27 broad, was the banqueting room for the lord and his numerous officers and retainers. Happily, this castle, with almost all the other inland fortresses of England, has long since fallen into ruins. The people want not their protection, nor the prince their aid. Rapine and hostile alarm have ceased, and the settled administration of law neither craves nor allows of these feudal auxiliaries. NYC: The St. Regis Hotel The St. Regis Hotel was built in 1904 by the architecture firm of Trowbridge & Livingston for Colonel John Jacob Astor IV, who eventually met his fate on the Titanic. The Beaux-Arts hotel, with Second Empire baroque influence, was designed to provide Old World charm to the wealthiest patrons. Hablaban de Maria Luisa Bombal, de esa ardilla obsesionada con las construcciones nebulosas capaz de pegarle tres balazos a Eulogio Sanchez --amor sin feedback-- en el ex hotel Crillon de Huerfanos con Ahumada. O de revisar los cajones en casa de su amado, encontrar un arma, apuntar a su propia cabeza (y luego al pecho) y disparar la bala que finalmente se introduciria por su hombro izquierdo. Una mujer que escribia en la cocina de Neruda en Buenos Aires, mientras el vate come-todo creaba los ultimos versos de Residencia en la tierra a metros de ella, entre cebollas, zapallos y una que otra factura, viste. En la pantalla, algunos escritores relataban la anecdota de cuando vino Borges a Chile en plena dictadura a recibir honores, y el hombre circular se reunia con lo granado del intelecto chileno. Maria Luisa, borracha al parecer, hacia un poco de ruido. Todos se miraban incomodos. Y cuando la escritora era invitada a retirarse de la reunion, el propio Borges (que ya la habia conocido en Argentina cuando Bombal se codeaba con la elite literaria trasandina e iba al cine con el no Premio Nobel) la tomo del brazo, la sento junto a el de una manera casi paternal, y siguio dirigiendose a sus interlocutores como si nada ocurriese. Quien contaba la anecdota hacia hincapie en lo de la actitud paternal y en la ternura que el Borges anticomunista mostro en una tensa situacion. Quizas esa sea la respuesta a tantas cosas. La ternura --"the milk of human Kindness”-- como accion. Casi en un acto revolucionario a escala. Creo que alguien puede ser mas anarco, punk y todas aquellas reducciones, en un abrazo honesto consciente de su capacidad transformadora. La conciencia del acto es fundamental. Algo asi como una politica de la ternura. La no accion de aquel instante y que paren el mundo en los segundos del contacto. Recuerdo un pasaje del Tao te Chin que tal vez no entiendo o que al desafiarme proponiendo algo que me conflictua, se aparece: "Disminuyendo cada vez mas, se llega a la no accion. Por la no accion nada se deja sin hacer. El mundo siempre se ha ganado sin accion". Y esta ultima frase siempre queda dando botes en mi cabeza. Contrariando tantas ?ensenanzas? que por anos nos han inculcado en una sociedad occidental donde el hacer es. Accion y no reflexion. Haz sin pensar. Funciona, muevete, no te quedes pegado, no pienses, no cuestiones, sigue. Produce. Existe una relacion entre el acto revolucionario del abrazo gratuito y eso de que el mundo siempre se ha ganado sin accion. Tal vez la esencia de lo que somos este en la no accion y todo lo que ello signifique. Tal vez la esencia de algo que todavia no descifro este en los segundos del abrazo. En la accion de reducir los espacios fisicos, unirnos a otros y dejar de actuar. Lo que perfectamente puede ser una metafora de la vida ?Acaso no nacemos para unirnos a otros y luego desaparecer, dejar de actuar? Sabado. Nunoa. Departamento en Villa Olimpica. Nuevamente la imagino, ahora con rostro, caminando sigilosa por el centro de la ciudad hasta la entrada del famoso ex hotel que hoy alberga un Ripley. Pensando, cuestionando los proximos minutos, con las manos sudorosas --y tal cual escribio en “La ultima niebla”-- palpando el arma "como una pequena bestia aturdida que puede retorcerse y morder". Subiendo por las escaleras que ahora pasan rapido con su mecanico ritmo, mientras el rostro de Felipe Camiroaga insiste en que en aqui no se cobran comisiones en las cuotas. Tal vez antes de interceptar a Eulogio Sanchez ese 21 de enero de 1941 en la puerta del hotel, paseo por sus salones de pesados cortinajes e incluso se sento en el comedor de vajilla importada y especialmente rotulada, donde una vez a la semana servian faisan. La imagino caminando entre los mozos de punta en blanco, sombras temporales de las vendedoras de rojo y pantalon caqui que conversan y rien en la seccion Hogar. Que opera habra en su cabeza. Como sera el momento de ver a Eulogio. Segun la escritora Matilde Ladron de Guevara, que se encontraba ese dia en una mesa vecina, Georgina Silva Jimenez (el nombre de nacimiento de Geel) "se acerco al cadaver sangrante y lo beso en la boca (...) Fue impresionante ver como ella estaba banada en sangre". Aunque nada de eso pasa por la mente de Maria Luisa Bombal porque nada ocurre todavia. my REAL wall - Vienna Red Light District Elena and I had just arrived in Vienna and made our way to our hotel, just to the north of Westbahnhoff, the Western main train station. As we tend to do when arriving in a new country, we looked around innocently for a nice place to put your postcards, all the while looking for our hotel and wondering why there were so many martial arts shops and sex shops in the area. When we reached Burggasse Stadthalle station, we noticed a long flight of stairs leading upwards to a point above the city and we mounted these, knowing that a good shot awaited us, but not really knowing quite where to point the camera. So we set this one up and shot it quite innocently, not realising that the magnificent artistic capital of Austria that the world knows was behind us in the opposite direction. What we actually shot as the backdrop was Austria's red light district. Whoops. Mountain God Can you see the face in this mountain? The Incas could! They believed that the face in the mountain resembled the Incan mountain god "Apu", apparently the formation is pretty much in its natural state, with only minor work on the nose for sharpness. The formation was seen as a sign of good luck for the area - let me know below if you can spot it too! This mountain is opposite the Incan site and city of "Ollantaytambo". It lies in the Urubamba valley (2,800m high!!) and the area was used especially for its rich agriculture - in order to sustain the Incan empire in harsher times, they built granaries and storehouses (bottom right) high up in these mountains where the cool and dry air would preserve their food. This site was especially important for the Incas during the Spanish conquest of Peru - after losing Cusco (the nearby Incan capital) the Incan emperor "Manco Inca", fortified the site briefly before relocating to the more strategic "Vilcabamba" - the fabled lost city and the last stand of the Incas, which Hiram Bingham mistook his discovery of the equally significant Machu Picchu for. This site is pretty much the last stop for anyone on their voyage to visit the magnificent Machu Picchu; unless you are travelling via the Inca Trail, the only way is to take the trains from the local train station through the Urubamba Valley (a visual feast in itself, along the wild Urubamba river which is pretty much the fourth river to join from the source of the river Amazon). incredible Dzongri.. Dzongri top (4050 m), meeting place of Man and Mountain God. Situated on the route to Kanchendzonga Base Camp from Yuksom in west Sikkim. The peak left to prayer flags is Mt. Pandim, 6691 m. Other peaks visible from Dzongri are Mt. Kanchendzonga, Mt. Kabru south, Mt. Kabru north, Mt. Rathong, Mt. Simvo, Mt. A fourth floor was added in 1926 and the original limestone was covered with brick veneer. It was last used as a jil in 1962 and recently has been renovated for use a a hotel. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Hot Wells postcard In 1927, the Hot Wells Tourist Park Company constructed tourist cottages around the foundation of the old hotel and elsewhere around the grounds. In 1942, the property was converted it into a motel and trailer park. This postcard is from 1952. The large house was the original Peat Inn public house where travellers and locals would meet to exchange banter and news, before modern technology like the 'telegraph instrument' was invented. It lies between Cupar and Crail or Cellardyke on the high plain of east Fife. The location is mentioned in the bus timetables and prior on the old milestones that are seen beside many of the country roads in Fife. The Peat Inn .. or rather, the Residence, where we stayed. Our suite is in the corner with the open windows and open curtains. Le Méridien and The Hilton at Sentral, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia The infrastructural development of Peninsular Malaysia around Kuala Lumpur during the last fifteen years or so is astounding. Of course, many travellers are aware of the utra-modern international airport KLIA. Another mega-project is that of the new 'capital' city of Putrajaya. In both cases, new forms of architecture are combined with nature and gardens. KLIA has much greenery in and around its buildings; Putrajaya is styled as 'The-City-in-a-Park', and this is clear from the many gardens in and surrounding this new metropolis. Central Kuala Lumpur - KLCC and its Petronas Towers and the immediate environs - also has large parks and even the 'rainforest' of Bukit Nanas, which make indoor and outdoor space almost continuous. The enormous project of 'Sentral', the central transportation hub of Kuala Lumpur and Malaysia, derives from a similar idea. It was designed by Kisho Kurokawa (1934-2007), the famous Japanese architect, and also the founder of the Green (environmentalist) Party of Japan. Kurokawa's philosophy of architecture is at the basis of KLIA, too. Kurokawa's insights are largely derived from the notion of 'Engawa', 'in-between-space', in which the public realm and private space co-exist. According to Kurokawa's futurist-holistic vision, traditional Western architecture considers space as 'discrete'; in other words, space is governed by walls and constructions. Traditional Japanese architecture, on the other hand, sees space as continous. He remarks that the first thing his traditional Japanese family did when they got up in the morning was to slide open their 'walls' to the outside environment no matter how cold it might be. Kurokawa's designs are meant to be 'holistic', encompassing the realm of 'nature' and at once also that of public and private humanity. Part of the Stesen Sentral project is the twin-hotel Le Meridien-Hilton. It was designed primarily by another 'new wave' Japanese architect, Yozo Shibata (1927-2003). This huge complex can be seen from afar, but it is most impressive from across the Lake of the Taman Tasik Perdana. Its blue-grey color blends in harmoniously during the day with the skies, whether blue or hazy. At night the hotels are bathed in a bluish light which distinguishes them from the dark sky but not obtrusively. Staying in the Hilton, one will immediately see that the private rooms and public spaces are indeed governed by that idea of 'Engawa'. There is much continuous space, emphasised by glass and grey metals, sliding doors and general 'openness'. In fact, the openness is such that you almost have the sensation of walking out of your window into thin air, even on the highest floors... The hotels are so 'tall' that it is hard to photograph them entirely from the pool area. I've cropped the left and right of this photo to at least give something of an illusion of how high these things are, even from the eighth story, where the swimming pool is.
