It almost goes without saying that an unexamined loss cannot be grieved. And without that grief, there can be no transformation but only transition. Now what in the world do you suppose the majority of that room of 40 twelve year-olds would ever have done with any of this? “wasted suffering” ? When I was growing up, this was when girls started wearing nylons to school and boys’ were similarly “waking up” in response to this. Yes, a transition. Maybe even a transformation of sorts, from caterpillars to butterflies. But it was the sort of transformation that somewhat got in the way of the nun’s intended “lesson”. And who knows why my ears were wide open to all of it. They would say things like this and a big light would go on in me. I never knew why but then again I can’t remember myself asking why. And, when the grief topic came up, mixed in my mind with all of this, floating around, were opening lines from Peter Shaffer’s Equus in which the psychiatrist asks the metaphysical question (which also serves to link desire and grief and transformation; quite a lot for a play to take on) about a horse: “What desire could this be? According to the well researched and well written book: "Snake River of Hells Canyon" by Johnny Carrey, Cort Conley, & Ace Barton: William McLeod first homesteaded this bench of the Snake River. William was a Scotsman and civil war veteran. William made this lonely place in Hells Canyon home in 1884. He cleared four acres of land and built a small stone home to live in. He had fruit trees and in addition to the more familiar "wild game" often ate Snake River sturgeon. He built a pole barn, then roofed with shakes. He lived at his canyon homestead until in old age he suffered burns from a fire in his cabin and had to move out of his canyon ranch to Riggins to live out his life. The Sheep Creek ranch was then bought by the McGaffees, who brought sheet tin up river by boat for the roof of their pole barn. Lenora Barton was the next owner of the ranch (1935). Her son, Ace Barton (one of the three authors of the book), rebuilt the McGafee barn and it is likely that the barn in this photo was the one built by Ace. In 1952 Lenora Barton sold the ranch to Bud Wilson, who eventually transferred ownership to the U.S. Forest Service. As I look at this barn I can see the work and pride involved as each hammer struck against a nail, echoed through the canyon. Like all of us, each owner of this place, had their dreams, their happy moments, and of course - - sad ones too. Within this shot are the homestead lands of Jim Bridge, Joe Eustler, Barney & Jake Stallman as well as Louis Lawrence, Charlie Bridge and Jim Edwards. (All passed on now) This country was claimed from about 1900 on to around 1913. Prior to that it was range land used by Peck & Converse Cattle Co. In The twenties the banks went around and loaned all the homesteader a thousand dollars to make improvements using the land as collateral. Many lost their homesteads. Other homesteads were sold by the wives when the husband died. Some died young. For those that lasted it was a source of pride to them to have held onto their places through rough times and often great hardships. In the mid west 320 acres was an ample amount of farm land to make a living on. However in this western part of the United States it took around 5000 acres during the 50's and 60's to get by. In my opinion getting people out on the land to homestead was a bit of a propaganda scheme similar to what Steinbeck talked about in the Grapes of Wrath. It all sounded wonderful and they were determined. By the time the homesteaders had gone through 2 or 3 winters they were woke up to some hard realities. Those that hung on made it doing what ever they could. Many would have starved out except for wild game, the neighbor's cattle and Moonshine stills. In fact a couple of illegal stills were likely contained within this photo. One I was told was situated in a draw just to left of the ant hill near the center of this photo The two lessons that were passed down to me is that men went broke when their wives went to town to much and never to mortgage the land once it was paid for. Century Tuna Superbods Run 2010 I was asked by my friend Zer to shoot with him at the Century Tuna Superbods Run 2010. I was hesitant at first because of the early call time (4am, wake up at 3am), but in many photo opportunities, you just have to force through it and I’m glad I did. This was my first chance to shoot a marathon/running event and upon entering the activity area, many of my preconceptions were proven very wrong! The event was huge! The activity center alone is at least a couple of hectares big of open field with a couple of fully equipped lights and sound stages, food stalls, activity stalls, photo booths, merchandise booths, etc along the sides. When Zer told us that the number of participants were 11,000, it didn’t sink in until I was actually there. Not only were there runners there as early as 4am preparing, but onlookers and supporters as well! The starting line with all its electronic LCDs, video screens, gadgets and timing devices was impressive. GPS devices were attached to every runner’s shoes so as to record accurately the start and end time of each runner as they pass the sensors. Water stations were available on many spots in the run and I have to say Runrio did a good job keeping the race organized and professional. We started shooting at around 6am. Our goal was to shoot as much of the runners as possible. The monopod helped, but my back and arms were aching when we finally wrapped up at around 930am. 11,000 people are a lot and the assortment of people who came to run was interesting: 1) The beginners trying out running which is getting quite popular these days. 2) The professional runners who were so fast that they reached the finish line before the other runners even started! 3) The senior citizens who were racing to prove something or to keep in shape. Quite a number ran the 21 km race, something that I am quite certain I will not be able to finish even at age 27! 4) The barkadas (group of friends) of all ages who were running for the bonding 5) The health buffs who were keeping in shape (or doing what they normally did every morning anyway!) 6) The people who just want to be seen in such a well publicized event 7) Children with their family starting young 8) Dogs running with their owners 9) Many who didn’t even register ran with their friends 10) People showing off with all the latest gadgets, outfits and equipment.for running Among others! I think I even saw a couple of foreigners… After experiencing such an event, I now understand why people, like a couple of my friends and family, have taken up the sport of running. In fact, two people I know in my photography club prefer to run rather than shoot photos! As the sport develops more in the Philippines, those who are really serious at running will be separated from those who are there just for the fad or for other reasons.. Valmont's history stretches way back to far beyond the school house. As a matter of fact, these archbar rail car trucks could date back to any age even before the old school house. It looks like parts of a crossing gate are stacked on the flat car. That there is deck planking left on the car is probably just luck. Modelers, here is your prototype. These should never be found on rail cars out on the main lines. Most modern equipment will be shod on roller bearings which are easy to spot. 60,000 pound capacity is pushing it for a flat car that could collapse under the load. Trucks like this were designed and produced long before it dawned on the rail car builders that the trucks could be cast in one piece instead of crafted from steel bar stock. The rigidity would certainly have been questionable and the old rail gear had opportunity enough to derail even if it were not in bad order. Witness the Bettendorf trucks (below) for one piece castings. A second clue to the age is the friction bearings that had covers so that the bearings could be packed with rag and grease packing for lubricating the assembly. These assemblies could become red hot "hot boxes" and simply light brush fires all along the lines, in weeds just like this. I was a good maintenance idea to double check the level of lubricant by popping the journal door open. The best place to study old (and newer) gear like this is at the Colorado Railroad Museum. In fact this yard has been stranded from the UP line by crossing that have been paved over. Up used to provide coal to the Valmont Power Plant but is now serviced from the Burlington Mainline. This early morning roll out was the only time we have had light in a week so it was fortunate to capture any shots. Almost as much as I dislike the early morning, I really like this early light on the facade but I had to take the morning light colors back from Adobe Lightroom because it knows so much more about what I wanted than I do. So he'd be too far from the truck and I'd tell him that he had to be an exact distance away for me to be able to get a good shot. It was hard, we were driving so fast that he'd be too far as he approached, the perfect spot for about half a second, and then too close to the truck as he was about to pass and I'd have to throw my body back to try to get the bed of the truck out of the picture. I ended up with hell of a lot of bruises. But I got this shot when he was parallel with the truck for the split second before he darted past us. It was so much fun. I'm a hairstylist and I love photography. I usually just take pics of my work with hair and makeup. I don't have a lot of money to invest in nice equipment, but I figure that can't hold me back if I don't let it. SO I posted and ad on craigslist to take pics for anyone interested. Jeremy and Rob responded asking if I'd take pics of them on their bikes in the canyon. I thought they meant actual bicycles. When I showed up and realized they meant to throw me in the back of the truck going highway speeds to picture their motorcycles I laughed and was like, okay what the hell this should be interesting. I didn't want them to know, but I was actually pretty nervous about it until we got started. [back to top] COA and partners help more than 4,200 seniors with DTV transition Digital TV finally arrived on June 12, but not without some static. After almost two years of warnings from the federal government and local broadcasters, many people were still not prepared when analog signals were shut off. The Digital TV Transition left many area seniors confused and in need of help. Seniors across the country were particularly hard hit. While most were aware the transition was coming, many were unsure how it would affect them or what they needed to do. Others could not afford to purchase new equipment for their homes, and those who could were having difficulties installing and operating it. Council on Aging and its partners joined in a nationwide effort to help seniors prepare for the digital TV transition. In our five-county area, the effort provided phone and in-home assistance to more than 4,200 older adults. Through a grant from the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging (N4A), COA participated in the Digital TV: Keeping Seniors Connected campaign. Help was available before and after the June 12 transition date. "For most of us, it's a minor inconvenience if our TV goes out for a few days," said Chris Brand, whose Community Resources & Information Department at COA led the digital TV effort. "But for seniors who are isolated and homebound, the TV is often their only companion during the day. Without out it, they're in the dark." As part of the campaign, COA distributed information to seniors through care managers, senior centers, home-delivered meal providers and congregate meal sites. Nevertheless, over the years, some consensus has emerged on the best dust control practices. This handbook summarizes those practices. This handbook describes effective methods for the control of mineral dusts in mines and tunnels. It assumes the reader is familiar with mining. The first chapter deals solely with dust control methods, regardless of the application. It is a brief tutorial on mining dust control and will be of help to the reader whose dust control problem does not conveniently fit any of the mining equipment niches described in later chapters. The subsequent chapters describe dust control methods for different kinds of mines and mining equipment. This includes underground coal and hard-rock mines, as well as surface mines, stone mines, and hard-rock tunnels. Because dust sampling has so many pitfalls, a chapter on methods used to sample dust is included. For those occasions when there is no practical engineering control, a chapter on respirators is also included.
