SeaTac Arson Fire

SeaTac Arson Fire

In May, 2009 SeaTac Fire responded to this apartment building with lots of fire. Assistance was received from several different departments. While the building was noted in the press as "abandonded" there were several families who had not yet vacated. Reports were that the fire started on a lower level but notice in the following pics the heavy damage on Div 3D.

For more information on this fire Google "SeaTac Viewport fire" - there are several good articles about the fire and the investigation. At the last report I read they had no suspects.

Family Vacation in the Florida Keys, circa 1993

Me and six cousins sailed this boat from Islamorada to Duck Key sometime after Christmas, to change hotels in the middle of the trip.

My brother arrived later in Duck Key and we got completely hammered one night on Whiskey and Tequila Sours. I was so hungover I couldn't make the day trip to Key West the next day.

I was 19, and I still can't stand the smell of Tequila to this day.

Marrakesh - Riad Dar One

Marrakesh - Riad Dar One

Riad is a traditional Moroccan house or palace with an interior garden, you can find many riads in Marrakesh which converted to hotel.

Riad Dar One, i have to say it is one of my top 10 hotel in the world.

However there is a story to this secret jewel. First, if you decided to go, please don't be afraid to ask direction to how to get there. it is not on the main street, taxi can't take you to the door. the best is call ahead to ask someone to pick you up at the nearby Bahia Palace.

After our horror stories in Casablanca we were not prepare to be friendly and ask.

Especially we were surrounded by people left and right, whom they claimed to try to help us. However after few circles we have to stop and pick a person to ask for direction, we picked a store owner figured he should not do any harm to us other than asking for tip to guide us to the hotel.

Unfortunately, he do not know the location/ nor heard of this hotel, other than telling us we are in the right area based on the address. THIS IS JUST GREAT. A man walked up and asked the store owner if he can help, this man said that he is willing to take us to the hotel, some strange man walking by. yes this didn't sound right.
the store owner suggested to walk with us and follow this strange man. (yes i know, trust me being a new yorker all i can think of these 2 men had this plan all along they are just going to take all our bags and rape us.) but we have no choice, we risk it and follow 2 men to narrow alleyway. Were we stupid, maybe.

At the end of the alleyway we got to a gate where few teenager boys were sitting there, yes look like they wants some money from us in order for them to open the gate. at that moment we both were deciding if we should turn and run or just stop there and say thank you and walk backward. but the store owner told us to wait and he will check out the path beyond the gate, he didn't have to pay the boys they opened the door for him just like that. my friend and i was staring at each other and we know that we have to make a move soon. we waited at the gate, within 30 second but felt like 30 min the store owner returned and led the way.

we see more narrow alleyway, we followed..... my friend and i can hear each other heartbeat.

after 30 steps on so, someone opened one of the door... and here we are this is what we saw.

Day 16/365 - Black & White Movies on a Grey Day

Day 16/365 - Black & White Movies on a Grey Day

It was cloudy and overcast in the DC area today, perfect weather for curling up on the couch and watching old movies. I love old B&W movies. Directors and cinematographers back then did absolutely amazing things with light and shadow ('Casablanca' is one of the best examples of this) that modern filmakers just ignore. When I lived at home my parents could never understand why I always watched old movies and tv shows. At some point they would invariably shake their heads and say "I don't know why we bothered buying a color tv when everything you watch is in black and white."

I think Turner Classic Movies is my favorite tv channel. If I'm not watching an old movie on TCM, then I'm probably watching sports. I don't really watch much broadcast tv anymore. 'The Amazing Race' and '24' are about the only series I still follow. I gave up on 'Lost' after the second season. I don't really miss it.

This movie is 'Hotel Berlin' and it's from 1945. It's all about layers and levels of intrigue, schemes, and plots taking place among a group of people from different walks of life in a grand hotel in Berlin toward the end of WWII, most of whom are looking to get the hell outta Germany before it's too late. It was pretty good. It had been sitting on my DVR for a while, but tonight I finally got around to watching it (BTW, DVRs get my vote for most awesome invention of the past few years).

Now it's time to dash downstairs to the convenience store in the basement of my apartment building and grab a pint of Ben & Jerry's before they close. Then I'll browse through the list of movies waiting on my DVR and see what I want to watch next. It's a Friday night double-feature at my place -- bring your own ice cream and join in the fun.

ld172 + Roger's Log

ld172 + Roger's Log

Lake District, - October 12th -16th, 2009

Photo Gallery below

Participants: Nick Ashton, Roger Ellis, Simon Fishburn, Neil Macalister,
Mike Smith, Tony Ward
Accommodation: Smallwood House, Compston Road, Ambleside, LA22 9DJ
Tel: 015394 32330, Props: Anthony and Christine Harrison
(?36 per night). Ranking: 8 out of 10 (small bathrooms/difficult parking).
October 12:
Depart Ingatestone 9.30 am, arrive Ambleside via M6 (and The Beeches Brasserie, Standish) at 3.15 pm for total distance of 305 miles. Bright sunshine all the way.
Afternoon walk around Rydal Water and Grasmere. 6? miles (2? hours).Pass Wordsworth’s abodes at Rydal Mount and Dove Cottage, Grasmere. Several parties of Japanese ladies in Grasmere, either Dove Cottage and admiring Japanese maples. Nice pint of Hawkshead bitter at ‘The Badger’ in Rydal. Meet up with Simon and Mike at Smallwood House in the evening and select ‘White Lion’ for dinner. Rump steak tests Tony’s teeth and Ella’s beard tests Nick. Manage third place in pub quiz.

October 13
Plan is to climb Bowfell (2,960 ft) and Crinkle Crags (2,816 ft). Arrive at start point - NT car park at Old Dungeon Ghyll Hotel, Langdale - and set off in bright sunshine at 10.15 am. A steady plod up The Band for 1? hours and overhaul (briefly) another group of ‘summer winers’. Simon keeps on path to Three Tarns where we hope to rendezvous for lunch. Rest of party take the Climbers’ Traverse, an exhilarating high level walk towards Bowfell buttress and Cambridge Crag. Cloud and mist developing but still good views of Harrison Stickle and Pike of Stickle across the Langdale Valley. Enjoy the spring at foot of Cambridge Crag then negotiate the River of boulders up the side of the Great Slab. Cloud and mist makes visit to the summit of Bowfell rather pointless so head down to the col at Three Tarns for lunch. No sign of Simon.

Set off to traverse Crinkle Crags around 2 pm in thickening mist. Meet Gretchen from the Alps who is wearing Bond Street gear rather than Milletts stuff and who complains bitterly at lack of cable cars and restaurants. Her partner is unhappy and unable to locate himself - a sign of things to come for us. Cairns difficult to locate and progress is slow. Reach what we think is the highest crag but few signs of distinct path. Eventually arrive at the Bad Step, which looks a bit tricky, with no clear means of avoidance. Wainwright says to proceed 140 yards west and descend a grassy rake but party decides to return to Three Tarns as visibility is so poor. (Wainwright describes the Bad Step as “the most difficult obstacle met on any of the regular walkers’ paths in Lakeland” and says that in mist on Crinkle Crags “go nowhere unless there is evidence that many others have passed that way before”.)

Descent of The Band is arduous and involves several unscheduled stops (Tony 2, Mike 4, Nick 2). Knackered party eventually assembles at Dungeon Ghyll car-park at 6.45 pm for a total distance of 10.2 miles in 8? hours. Tony receives invitation to join the National Trust.

Meanwhile Simon (who descended The Band like an ‘arthritic crab’) has returned to Ambleside and has booked dinner at Matthew’s Brasserie for 8 pm. Wild boar, duck and beef bourguignon on the menu, washed down with some pleasant Chilean merlot (?170 including tip). Nightcap in The Sportsman.

October 14
Opt for a ‘rest day’ and a boat-trip across Lake Windermere in the mist and murk. Arrive at Wray’s Castle (Victorian Folly). Skipper of the ‘Princess of the Lake’ insists that our plan to start in the south and walk north is not the right way to do things so party disembarks (Nick is thrown off). Pleasant 1? hour woodland walk to Ferry House. Extend walk on gentle circular route via Far Sawrey and a drink at The Craife Crier. Return to ferry landing stage for crossing to Bowness and return to Ambleside aboard SS Swan. On return, Tony finds car has been bumped by Smallwood’s owner. Enjoyable meal at the Jade Garden Cantonese restaurant before repairing to The Sportsman to catch the second half of England v Belarus. Late stayers surrounded by short skirts attending the Wednesday disco.

October 15
Party fully rested and recovered and ready to climb the Old Man of Coniston (2,633 ft). Depart Coniston village at 10.15 am in misty conditions. Squeals of excitement from Church Beck where a party of girls (probably from last night’s disco in Ambleside) are ‘gorge walking’ or ‘ghyll scrambling’. (from ?25 per half day including wet suit, hard hat etc). Good progress towards the Old Man via the mining and quarrying areas below the tarn of Low Water.

(NB Copper mining at Coniston began in 1599. Early miners were Germans brought over by the Elizabethan ‘Company of Mines Royal’. Mining was initially opencast, with the first tunnels driven in the 17th Century using fire and cold water (prior to gunpowder). Coniston’s heyday was in the mid 1800s. Hundreds were employed (mainly Irish) and mining reached down to depths of more than 1,200 fe

lmrk008 Cairn on Rabbit Mountain

This surely stretches the label of Rock Art but this cairn on Rabbit Mountain near Lyons, Colorado seems to have made the leap from simple landmark to a true sculptural art piece. It stands near the path of one of the trail loops. It may be a fine piece of collection art where it collects elements as people go by. I wonder how really different that might be from the traces of the ancients?

Great Family Reunion @ Ladybamboo

Great Family Reunion @ Ladybamboo

Our small family live in 4 continents. We travel to visit each other
regularly but this is the first time in >30 years that ALL of us are meeting same time, same place Sep10-14, 2008.

And our mother-of-all Reunion took place at Ladybamboo
Villa, Bali.

Aunt Miriam, Mum (Maureen), cousin OiYee and Gaik - from Malaysia
Aunt Phil - from Perth. Uncle John - from Ascot, UK.
Brothers Chye, Chin, & sis-in-law Malinda - from SanFrancisco. Dear friends Richard & SauLing - from Singapore.

We had a wonderful time and found ourselves very at home at Ladybamboo - a
home away from our respective homes. We were impressed with the cosy accommodation and warm hospitality of Ladybamboo staff who went the extra mile in taking care of our individual needs, and making our stay in Bali extra memorable.
Thank you Reki, Lambert, Made, and nice staff of Ladybamboo, not forgetting the drivers too. We love to stay with you again, next time we visit Bali.

Along Broughton Street - SAVANNAH, GA

Along Broughton Street - SAVANNAH, GA

The old Avon Theater and the restored Marshall House Hotel.

Only the facade and marquee remains of the old Avon Theater - all the former theater interior is demolished. A japanese restaurant occupies the section that once was the lobby area. I couldn't find much information about The Avon but I would guess it was built in the 1930's.

The the much older Marshall House Hotel originally opened in 1849 and become the Gilbert House Hotel in the 1940's before finally closing as a hotel in the 1950's. It was during the 1950's that the building was drastically altered and cut up into modern storefronts. The original iron balcony was removed and a smooth false front covered the windows. In the 1990's the building was restored back to it's original look and purpose with a new replicated iron balcony put in place.

"The Murder of Ellsworth," Harper's Weekly, June 15, 1861

The story of Col. Ellsworth's death for taking down a Confederate flag at the Marshall house was widely published and sparked the patriotic fervor of Northerners who claimed him as their first martyr. When the story appeared in Southern newspapers, James Jackson, the hotel's proprietor, was hailed as a victim of Northern aggression. Cries of "Remember Ellsworth!" recruited thousands for the Union and "Remember Jackson!" recruited thousands for the Confederacy. Exhibit at The Lyceum.

Slioudianka, juillet 2010

Slioudianka, juillet 2010

St. Helens I made my way up Forest Service road 90 that hugs the Lewis River above the Swift Reservoir. I stopped at Big Creek falls, then at the Lower, Middle, and Upper falls of the Lewis River. The lower falls is easiest to reach, the middle falls is the nicest hike, and the upper falls is an exercise in photo frustration, since the only shooting angle you can get on the falls is “down” and not a good down angle at that. I included a photo of it though, so others can see what they would be hiking to see. I had been to the lower falls of the Lewis River many times, but never to the other waterfalls, so it was well worth the time to do so.

THE STORY:
Thursday August 20th:
1. Took a challenging cross country hike to a beautiful set of waterfalls on Walupt Creek, where it enters the Cispus River. The hike was not long but required some nasty bushwhacking (most I found on my way out, could be avoided); a steep descent (I took the wrong way into the canyon and my route was MUCH steeper than it need to be).

Friday August 21st
2.I drove up early in the morning to Windy Ridge to see if I might bet a peak “up” at Mt. St. Helens or a peak “down” at Spirit Lake. Fogged in completely, a bust. It is amazing though how the entire area is growing back. The down timber that use to be so impressive to view, that was laying on the ground like matchsticks, pointed away from the Mt. St. Helens “blast” are quickly disappearing as “new life” takes over and covers the area.

3.I continued on down Forest Service Road 25 and then up Forest Service Road 90 to take a lot more waterfalls photos a long the way. Most involved just a short hike. Some like the Lower Falls of the Lewis River; I had visited many times before. Others like Big Creek; Middle Lewis; Upper Lewis; and Twin Falls Creek - - I viewed for the first time.

4.Starlisa, a flickr photographer, had done a masterful job of organizing a get together at a non-fee, secluded camp site on the upper Lewis River, across the river from where Twin Falls Creek falls, jumps into the river. A truly lovely place to camp. I felt honored to be invited on this get together. Seven flickr folks showed up (plus Starlisa’s dog, Rio). I had never met any of the other six, so it was truly a great experience. Three of us, who arrived at the rendezvous, visited a short while with the group, then headed on home. Four set up tents and planned to spend Friday night at the site. Thank you Darlisa!

5.I left the flickr group at 5 pm and returned to Randle via Forest Roads 90 and 23. I took a short four mile round trip detour to get “fading light” photos across Takhlakh Lake of Mt. Adams. I got back to my home in Eastern Washington at 9 pm Friday night, with a few mosquito bites, a little darker tan, a few bushwhacking cuts, AND a ton of great memories of beautiful places seen and nice people met.

A couple of those little happenings on a trip like this that will always stick fondly in the memory bank.

The Italians: A mother and son from Italy were taking the “back way” (to say the least), from Portland to make their way to the Olympic peninsula. They actually put faith in their rental car’s voice navigation system and ended up ACROSS from the Flickr camp, with a flat tire and completely lost, without map or any idea how to get out of where they were. The mother spoke good English but her son did not. Praise to the flickr encampment folks, who worked with the lady (and gave her a map), so they could make their way back to “civilization”.

The Weenie dog:At Takhlakh Lake, there was an assortment of people “using” the lake for recreation. There were a couple of swimmers; a fly fisherman with flippers fishing from a float tube; canoes; a young mother wading out in the lake with her grinning young child; AND a kayak, with the most smug weenie dog “kayak navigator”, you can imagine. Not many things make me laugh out loud, but the sight of the weenie dog, ears flapping in the wind, in the front of that kayak, was more than I could handle.

Now some stuff for you “detail” type people:

Big Creek Bridge

Big Creek Bridge

Through truss bridge over Big Creek on CR210 Le Flore County, Oklahoma.
Relocated here from unknown location in 1938. Judging by design
it was most likely built in the late 19th century. Also the massive
beams used under the deck suggest that this was a railroad bridge in it's former life.
Currently open to vehicular traffic. Taken 1-17-10 with a Canon A640.
