033/365 "cheap shot"

033/365

I only have about 5 mins to spend on today's potd due to photos/orders I have to get placed today!

notes:
1. I will be getting a battery charger for my point & shoot in this week...so hopefully I won't be depending on photobooth cheap shots anymore. (even though I secretly love it.)

2. I started a dream journal as of yesterday since it blew my mind when I researched all the symbols,etc...from my dream yesterday. (I know Terami, you'll be so proud!) :) What I can share about last night's is that I was in a hotel room with Julie and my niece getting ready to take (niece) to Nashville, and Julie was flying back to NYC. She was telling me to hurry that I was making her late even though she just stepped out of the shower and wasn't even ready. I also found myself back in my college town taking photos of my fave restaurants with a point & shoot digi camera but it wouldn't take them right, it kept zooming in and this guy who was eating hot wings tried to tell me how to work a camera and I was like...clearly I know what I'm doing, I'm a real photographer, but he didn't believe me. Then I found myself back working for my atl photographer again and I was making a wedding book and I accidentally dropped it into a mud puddle and tried to cover it up, but he noticed it and he was so mad at me and I was so mad at myself.

3. (real life) i decided to go back to being a vegetarian today! (after getting stuck behind a truck carrying chickens and it made me cry.)

i'm out!

Siegfried is the first part of Die Nibelungen; the second part is Kriemhilds Rache (1924, Fritz Lang). The screenplay was adapted from the Nordic poem Nibelungenlied and was written by director Fritz Lang and his wife at the time, Thea von Harbou. Siegfried is still astounding to look at. Fritz Lang gives the film a real sense of wonder by way of fantasy elements such as dwarfs and magic powers. It's amazing that such a piece of cinema could have been made in the 1920’s. The standout of the 143 minute running time is the episode of the dragon. The effects are better than those in many modern films.

Di donne e d'altro ancora - Corinaldo (AN) - 6 marzo 2010

Di donne e d'altro ancora - Corinaldo (AN) - 6 marzo 2010

The Long Road To Woodstock---At The Seattle Olympic Hotel, An Interim Promotion

The Long Road To Woodstock---At The Seattle Olympic Hotel, An Interim Promotion

To refresh your memory----in the summer of 1969, with the Shriners coming to town for their national convention, the maid's went on strike at the hotel. The maids were making, I think, $1.80 an hour and they were striking for $2.00 an hour. Since I was making probably $1.50 or less per hour, I was not filled with a great deal of sympathy.
The first day of the strike, management brought in scads and scads of college and high school students. I remember little about that day other than that the honchos neglected to lock-up the sodas, and at the end of the day, the hotel was completely wiped out of sodas of every description. The did, fortunately, have the liquor locked up. I remember that I had never tasted Schweppes bitter lemon, and that first day of the strike, I had two or three. No doubt because of their forbidden aura, they tasted delicious.
The hotel was swarming with high school and college age girls, and it was like working in a paradise. No one knew what they were doing, and it was easy to slide around in an undisciplined way (I'm guessing), act important, and expend little energy. I think (again I'm guessing) that the employee cafeteria was abolished. All the cooks were unionized, and so were unwilling to cross the picket lines. That left the chefs to do all the cooking. If I remember correctly (my dealer friend had bragged to me that he had "turned on all twenty cooks in the kitchen, and half of the chefs"), there were ten chefs. The Golden Lion restaurant was shut down, and all the food in the hotel was served in the coffee shop. A buffet was laid out, breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and the chef and his sous did all the cooking.
I only remember three things from that time. There was a banquet one night, and I was called in to the kitchen and helped plate. That was the first time I ever did a job that I have done most probably many thousands of times since, and if I'm lucky, will never do again.
The food that went out for breakfast was better than the food that we got down in the employee cafeteria. I remember the desserts in the employee cafeteria especially---they were the desserts that came down after they had gone unused in the restaurant and the coffee shop, three or four days old, relatively unappealing. I remember that one of the steam table breakfast items was apples crepes, and they were really fairly decent.
And I remember one of the customers who came in to the coffee shop during the strike. She was a young woman, twenty-five or thirty or so, very attractive, and traveling by herself. Perhaps I was charming in my way, or perhaps I merely imagined that I was charming. When she got up and left her table, after she had paid her bill, she left her room key lying on the table.
My mind went in to overdrive. No doubt she had left the key for me to find. No doubt, if I went up and knocked on her door, she would be waiting for me. If I gave her enough time, she would have changed in to a negligee, lit the candles, turned the covers back, and prepared a welcome fit for Dionysius himself. My mind flew out, spun circles around Jupiter and Saturn and rocketed off in the direction of Neptune and Pluto.
On the other hand, she most probably had just forgotten her key. If I took it upstairs and knocked on her door to return it, she would undoubtedly call security. I would be fired on the spot, and frog-marched out of the hotel.
Cowardice won out---I took the key to the front desk, turned it in, and never heard another word about it.
Oh, and one other thing. You say that that was the summer when man first walked on the moon? I didn't pay it a bit of attention. I didn't have a television in my apartment, and I guess I had gotten out of the habit of reading the newspaper, other than the alternative paper, and Rolling Stone. I remember, the day after the first moonwalk, passing a newspaper in a news rack. "Man Walks On Moon!" it said, or something like that. That was the first I'd heard about it.

May 24, 2011

The culture of the United States is said to be a youth culture, which is defined in terms of entertainment: sex, rock music or its current equivalent, violent video games, sports, and TV reality shows. This culture has transformed the country and appears on the verge of transforming the rest of the world. There are even indications that secularized Arab and Iranian youth can’t wait to be liberated and to partake of this culture of porn-rock.

America’s former culture–accountable government, rule of law and presumption of innocence, respect for others and for principles, and manners–has gone by the wayside. Many Americans, especially younger ones, are not aware of what they have lost, because they don’t know what they had.

This was brought home to me yet again by some reader responses to my recent columns in which I pointed out that Strauss-Kahn, the IMF director (now former) accused of sexually assaulting a hotel maid, was denied the presumption of innocence. I pointed out that the legal principle of innocent until proven guilty was violated by the police and media, and that Strauss-Kahn was convicted in the media not only prior to trial but also prior to his indictment.

From readers’ responses I learned that there are people who do not know that a suspect is innocent until proven guilty by evidence in a public trial. As one wrote, “if he wasn’t guilty, he wouldn’t be charged.” Some thought that by “presumption of innocence” I was saying that Strauss-Kahn was innocent. I was accused of being a woman-hater and received feminist lectures. Some American women are more familiar with feminist mantras than they are with the legal principles that are the foundation of our society.

Many males also confused my defense of the presumption of innocence with a defense of Strauss-Kahn, or if they knew about “innocent until proven guilty,” didn’t care. Right-wingers wanted Strauss-Kahn out of the picture because he was the socialist party candidate likely to defeat the American puppet, Sarkozy, in the French presidential election. With Sarkozy, Washington finally has a French president who has abandoned all interest in an independent or semi-independent French foreign policy. Didn’t I realize that if we lost Sarkozy, the French might revert to not going along with our invasions, as they refused to do when we had to get Saddam Hussein? With Sarkozy, the French are doing our bidding in Libya. Why in the world did I think Strauss-Kahn and some silly doctrine like the presumption of innocence were more important than French support for our wars?

* A d v e r t i s e m e n t
* Buy 3 Get 1 FREE!

Many left-wingers were just as indifferent to a legal principle that protects the innocent. They wanted Strauss-Kahn’s blood, because he is a rich member of the establishment and as IMF director had made the poor in Greece, Ireland, and Spain pay for the mistakes of the rich. What did I mean, “presumption of innocence”? How could any member of the ruling establishment be innocent? One left-winger even wrote that I had “reverted to type,” and that my babbling about presumption of innocence proved that I was still a Reaganite defending the rich from the consequences of their crimes.

It evidently did not cause the feminist, the right-wing or the left-wing to wonder that if such a powerful member of the establishment, as they regard Strauss-Kahn to be, can be denied the presumption of innocence, what would be their fate?

Independent thought is not a concept with which very many Americans are familiar or comfortable. Most want to have their emotions stroked, to be told what they want to hear. They already know what they think. A writer’s job is to validate it, and if the writer doesn’t, he is, depending on the ideology of the reader, a misogynist, a pinko-liberal commie, or an operative for the fascist establishment. All will agree that he is a no good SOB.

MANHATTAN HOTELS: 1880-1920 (Images of America (Arcadia Publishing))

MANHATTAN HOTELS: 1880-1920 (Images of America (Arcadia Publishing))

Manhattan has long been renowned for the diversity of its offering of hotelsa€s--from some of the best in the world to some of the worst. Around 1880, the entire nature of the hotel experience began to change. Formerly, hotels had been just a place to stop between here and there for a hot meal and a warm bed. Suddenly, the hotel itself became the destination. New affluence, new technologies, and new fashion all came together in the decades between 1880 and 1920 to influence the demands of hotel guests, eventually changing the hotel themselves. This book gives a glimpse into the hotels of the super rich, the not-so-rich, the middle class, the Bohemians, and the workers. In a city as dynamic as New York, it should come as no surprise that so many hotels have a juicy tidbit or two of historical gossip attached to them. Manhattan Hotels: 1880a€s-1920 may well be the most extensive work in print on the subject of the citya€s's hotels in this period. Far

from being a book for specialists, however, it is designed to bring Manhattan and its hotels of this era to life for all those who have been captivated by the electric excitement of the place.

Past God's Endurance

The history of Canada is inextricably linked with the history of the railroad. The building of the transcontinental rail line was what brought British Columbia into Confederation but that rail line serviced only the southern part of BC in an east-west direction. British Columbia had to built its own railroad to service the rest of the province.
British Columbia Railway began its history as the Howe Sound, Pemberton Valley, and Northern Railway in 1907. The first tracks were laid north from Squamish, then Newport Beach in 1910. On February 12, 1912 the ten mile line was sold and renamed the Pacific Great Eastern or PGE. Over the years PGE stood for Prince George Eventually, Please Go Easy, and Neither Pacific, Great, nor Eastern.
In 1911 the company surveyed between Lillooet and Squamish, at the south end on the west side of the Cheakamus river (although the line was ultimately built on the east side of the river), and rails were laid from Squamish to Cheekeye. Foley, Welch, and Stewart were given the contract to build the line. Construction began at both ends, in North Vancouver and north of Squamish. Tracks were laid to Alta Lake (Whistler) by 1914 and to Lillooet in 1915, an amazing feat when one considers the steep hillsides and numerous chasms along the line.
In 1913 they began laying thirteen miles of track from North Vancouver to Whytecliffe and in January 1914 service commenced between the Lonsdale terminal and Dundarave. It wasn't until 1956 however that the line was completed to Squamish so until then passengers and cargo boarded the train in North Vancouver, rode the rails for thirteen miles, got off the train and onto a Union Steamship company boat operated by the Terminal Navigation Company for the ride up Howe Sound, got off the steamship and back onto the train in Squamish. An interesting journey.
In 1918 Foley, Welch, and Stewart Company gave up on construction and the BC government took over the line. The line reached Prince George in 1952 and to Fort St. John and Dawson Creek in 1958, and to Fort Nelson in 1968. In 1972 it was renamed the British Columbia Railway for public relations reasons by W.A.C. Bennett who felt that having 'PGE' on railway cars wasn't adequately promoting the province as they traveled across the country.
The construction crews enjoyed building the line around Alta Lake because Myrtle and Alex Phillips were already running their fishing lodge there. That meant the crews could sometimes eat at Rainbow Lodge. They took every opportunity to do so.
As the rails were laid to Rainbow Lodge and to the Mons Wye, near the Nicklaus North golf course, the engineer on the work train would give a big whistle blast about a mile before he got to the lodge. Mrs. Phillips would get up and meet him when the train arrived at Rainbow Lodge. He'd ask when the crew could be fed and she would invariably reply, "Give me half an hour." When the train returned from the Mons Wye (a wye was a track for turning a steam engine around if it couldn't back up) the crew would be greeted by porridge, bacon, eggs, toast, and hot coffee, all cooked on a wood stove. The Phillips's were paid in meal tickets which would be redeemed by the PGE for thirty-five cents each.
Once the line was up and running Mrs. Phillips continued to feed passengers because there were no dining cars on the trains in those days. She would be contacted from Squamish and told how many passengers would want lunch and the train would stop at Rainbow Lodge long enough to feed the hungry train passengers. She would feed the passengers dinner when the train came through on its southern run.
The old PGE was described as an easy going railroad. If a passenger missed his stop the train would back up to drop him off. It would stop if someone shot some game from the train so the kill could be retrieved and quickly dressed. It was rarely on time, but it was always a memorable ride.
In 1916 a snowplow and train got stuck in MacDonald's cut, about a mile south of Pemberton, in twenty feet of snow (ah, the good old days). It took the crew over two hours to break trail into Pemberton where they put up at the Pemberton Hotel. As no trains were moving, supplies quickly ran low so the crew made skis out of split cedar, bought buckskin thongs as bindings, and headed south. It took them all day to get to Rainbow Lodge where they were treated to good food and warm beds.
When they left the next day it was eight degrees below zero Fahrenheit. Supplies were running low at Rainbow so Mrs. Phillips decided to head out with the railway men. She put her skis on and had no trouble keeping up with the men. It was so cold the eggs they were carrying froze solid. They made it to Brandywine where they discovered an engine had managed to punch through the snow to meet them.
That trip would have been nothing like a few laps around the Lost lake loop today on a pair of six
