National Auto Museum, Reno - 1913 Stutz Bearcat

National Auto Museum, Reno - 1913 Stutz Bearcat

The Museum's placard text for this car reads:

1913 STUTZ
Model: Series B Bearcat
Built by: Ideal Motor Car Co., Indianapolis, Indiana
Price: $2,000
Engine: 4-cylinder, 60 H.P.
Bore: 4-3/4 in.
Stroke: 5-1/2 in.
Displacement: 389.9 cu. in.

Born in 1876, Harry C. Stutz grew up near Indianapolis, Indiana*, and in 1903 he became sales engineer at the Schebler Carburetor Company. In 1904**, as chief engineer at Marion Motor Car Company, Stutz designed the American Underslung and the Marion automobiles. In 1911, he formed the Ideal Motor Car Company, where he began to make his first Stutz racing automobile. In 1913, he changed the company name to the Stutz Motor Car Company and began production of his most famous automobile, the Bearcat, probably the best known of all American sports cars.

The first Stutz automobile was designed and built from the ground up in just five weeks and was entered in the annual Indianapolis 500 race on May 30, 1911, with Gil Anderson at the wheel. The Stutz finished 11th after covering the course in 7 hours, 22 minutes without mechanical adjustment or repair. The average speed was 67.78 mph, only a few miles an hour slower than the winning Marmon’s speed of 74.59. This success spawned the company slogan of “The Car That Made Good in a Day.”

Stutz Motor Car Company production declined sharply after 1930 and no new models were introduced. Its last active year was 1934.

Donated by: Harrah’s Hotels & Casinos
Adopted by: Bob & Kathy McLaughlin (C)

Notes on Museum’s placard text:

* I understand that Harry Stutz grew up near Dayton, Ohio, not moving to Indianapolis until 1903.

** I believe that this sentence is misleading. Stutz’s contribution to the American Underslung was made in 1905, when he was chief engineer for American Motor Car Company. He did not become chief engineer of the Marion Motor Car Company until 1906.

Don Juan De Aquila Was Here

Don Juan De Aquila Was Here

A great revolt broke out in Ulster shortly before the time we are dealing with, and spread throughout the whole of Ireland. In 1599 all Munster was in revolt—it would seem that the clans had realised the necessity of a united Ireland. It was headed by Hugh O'Neill, Earl of Tyrone, and Hugh Roe O'Donnell, Chief of Tirconnell. O'Neill visited Munster in January 1600, and encamped with his army at Inniscarra, near Cork. He was waited on by many chiefs, including Donall O'Sullivan Beare.

The English generals hitherto commissioned to suppress the rebellion had failed, so now Elizabeth sent over Lord Mountjoy as Deputy, and Sir George Carew as President of Munster. Carew, by fraud and treachery, as well as by force, had subdued nearly the whole of Munster by the end of 1600.

The Irish were making pressing demands on the King of Spain for help which was offered, but was very slow in coming. At last, on the 23rd September, 1601, a Spanish fleet of 54 ships with a force of 3,000 on board entered the harbour of Kinsale. The ships were to be brought into Cork Harbour, but, on nearing its entrance, a head wind started which caused them to make for Kinsale.

The English army at Kinsale was too small to oppose their landing—a force of 50 foot and 40 horse—and these immediately set out for Cork, many of the better class of persons accompanying them with all their goods. They carried off all cattle and corn from the district and broke down the mills.

The Spanish army marched, with 25 colours, towards the town, the gates of which were thrown open to them, and they were received kindly by the town people. The town, environed by hills, was without any kind of defence, and contained about 200 houses.

The commander-in-chief, Don Juan de Aquila, in order to allay the fears of the people, issued the following proclamation: —

" We, Don Juan de Aquila, general of the armie to Philip, King of Spaine, by these presents, doe promise that all the inhabitants of the towne of Kinsale shall receive no injury by any of our retinew, but rather shall be used as our brethren and friends, and that it shall bee lawful for any of the inhabitants that list to transport, without any molestation in body or goods, and as much as shall remaine, likewise without any hurt. Don Juan de Aquila."

As soon as he had lodged his army, he despatched messengers to report his arrival to the Earl of Tyrone and Chief of Tirconnell. He then set about repairing the defences, and took possession of Rincurran Castle.

Mountjoy and Carew were at Kilkenny, and, learning the Spaniards had arrived, they set out for Cork, and at the end of three weeks encamped on the north side of Kinsale with an army of 12,000 men. On the 29th of October the Lord President besieged Rincurran, Don Juan sent a party of 500 to its relief, but, after some hard fighting, the place was delivered up to the English, and the prisoners were sent on to Cork. Sir George received the following letter of thanks on the occasion from the Queen, 31st of October, 1601: —

" Her Majesty's letter unto the Lo. President.

" My faithful George, if ever more service of worth were performed in shorter space than you have done wee are deceived; among many eye-witnesses wee have received the fruit thereof, and bid you faithfully credit, that what so witt, courage, or care, may doe, wee truely finde they have beene all truely acted in all your charge, and for the same beleeve that it shall neither bee unremembered nor unrewarded; and in the meanwhile beleeve my helpe nor prayers shall never faile you.

" Your Soveraigne that best regards you,

" Eliz. R."

Intelligence at this time was communicated to the English that O'Donnell was on his march to Kinsale. Carew, against his will, was despatched to intercept him. None of them was anxious to fight, as each, thought it better to reserve his strength for a future effort. They were one night within four miles of each other near Holy Cross in Tipperary. Here O'Donnell's further progress was barred, for Carew lay right in his path. Luckily there came a sudden and intense frost which hardened up the bogs and morasses, and enabled him in the night to cross the Slieve Felim mountains, and in 24 hours he reached Croom, 40 miles distant, the greatest march that Carew ever heard of before. He arrived at Kinsale about the middle of November. O'Neill arrived 21st December with 4,000 men, and encamped some distance from the English lines, so the English were now besieged.

The chieftains of Munster up to this kept aloof, but on seeing the armies of O'Neill and O'Donnell on the field, they took courage and joined their ranks. Among these were Sir Owen McCarthy's sons, Sir Finnin, and all the O'Driscolls, and all the Carties of Carbery, Donhall O'Sullivan Beare, O'Sullivan More's eldest son, the Earl of Clancare's base son, all the Carties of Desmond, the Knight of Kerry, John O'Connor, Kerry, and all from Kinsale to Limerick. The O'Driscoll

Day 100

How would you like it if someone like this answered the door?

Jason had to send his 360 in (red rings of death again) and we were expecting it today. Not a problem at all. Someone has to sign for it, I'm off, no big deal. Right?

Well usually UPS comes in the afternoon, say around 2 p.m.

I slept in a bit, spend some time working on a recipe website, got buns going and then was going to shower.

Then there is a knock on the door.

Uh oh. I'm not showered, haven't even brushed my hair, it's still tossed up from when last night before bed, no make-up, no bra, wearing only a tank top and yoga pants.

Of course it's a young, cute UPS driver today. As if that wasn't bad enough, he wants to make chit chat. Usually they NEVER do that. Wanted to know what was in the box since he delivers a bunch of them every day, and then wanted to talk about the 360 repairs, etc.

Why can't the cute ones want to chit chat when I'm dressed, and ready to face to world???

Remembering Glen Lapp

Remembering Glen Lapp

MCC worker Glen Lapp, of Lancaster, Pa., was killed Aug. 5 in rural Afghanistan. This photo was taken in Kabul, Afghanistan, in July 2010.

MCC photo/John Williamson

AKRON, Pa. – Two months after MCC worker Glen Lapp and nine other aid workers were killed in rural Afghanistan, Lapp’s father, Marvin, brother Jerry and cousin Joe were welcomed in the guesthouse in Kabul where Glen had lived.

They took part in an Oct. 1 memorial service for the 10 who died Aug. 5, 2010.

But they also were able to visit the office where Glen helped to arrange logistics for rural eye camps and contacted village leaders to work out permissions and details. Following Glen’s example, they carried a banana and toffee pie to four friends who lived nearby.

And through each encounter, Marvin, Jerry and Joe Lapp got a closer feel for Glen’s efforts in Afghanistan, for how he was cherished by Afghan and expatriate friends and for the ways in which his adventurous spirit, conscientious attention and compassion shone through in both work and play.

“I frequently imagined how Glen must have done this or that thing, how he interacted with people, how he was able to do what needed to be done,” Marvin Lapp said. “It was a very good experience to be there.”

Glen Lapp, 40, and other members of a team formed by MCC partner International Assistance Mission (IAM), which provides eye care and medical treatment in Afghanistan, were returning from a journey to hold an eye camp in a rural area when they were killed in Afghanistan’s Badakhshan province.

John Williamson, MCC representative for Afghanistan, India and Nepal, notes that the exact circumstances of their deaths may never be known.

For the Lapp family, the trip to Afghanistan didn’t solve this mystery, but it did offer a window into Glen’s world and vividly showed how the same qualities that Lancaster County friends remember Glen for also were prized by friends in Afghanistan.

Afghanistan is one of the most underdeveloped countries in the world. According to the United Nations, the average life expectancy is a mere 43 years. Decades of war have taken a toll on people, communities, institutions and structures, including the health care and education systems. Outbreaks of violence are frequent and the security situation can change overnight.

Even though he only began his work in Afghanistan in 2008, Glen quickly became known as a person who reached out to other expatriates living in the midst of these tensions.

“Everyone acknowledges living in Kabul or Afghanistan is very challenging,” Williamson noted. Glen, however, was one of the most active in reaching out to his colleagues. “He brought a lot of life. Other people really enjoyed the life and spirit that he shared,” Williamson said.

Williamson, who accompanied the Lapps on this trip, was told that Glen was known for being conscientious about checking in with security personnel and following any warnings he was given. But in keeping with the adventurous spirit he was known for among family and friends in Lancaster, he also didn’t let fear keep him from living vibrantly and encouraging others to do the same.

He led a Monday morning exercise group. He took time to play with fellow workers’ children. He and a colleague, also among the 10 killed, helped organize volleyball tournaments.

And when security allowed, he and others would go into nearby hills for hikes.

Hiking and biking were such passions for Glen that those who attended his memorial service in Lancaster, Pa., were invited to bike there.

But hiking with someone in Afghanistan requires a far different level of trust than outdoor excursions in a more secure setting – and colleagues chose to place that trust in Glen.

“Several people told me they wouldn’t go on a hike in Afghanistan with just anyone – but they felt confident in being led by Glen,” Joe Lapp said. “People in general felt confident about doing something out of the ordinary with Glen. That’s something that we as a family and friends know about Glen, and that’s something that became clear that people in Afghanistan knew about Glen.”

For all his sense of adventure, Glen didn’t take the prospect of serving in Afghanistan lightly.

Glen had long wanted to serve abroad. But he had been busy – working as a nurse, a realtor, traveling, climbing mountains in South America and trekking in Nepal.

When the assignment opened in Afghanistan, he and his parents, Marvin and Mary Lapp, talked not only about the opportunities in going but also with each other and with MCC about the risks, the violence and the insecurity of the setting.

“It wasn’t always easy thinking about Glen being there, but it was a choice we had made,” his mother said.

The assignment drew on skills and qualities Glen honed over years of working and of traveling.

From conversations through e-mail and Skype, his parents could sense how much he liked the process of spending time with village leaders to work out the details of eye camps.

“It was clear he

365.249 Calling AAA Once Again

365.249 Calling AAA Once Again

Okay, so I left my parents around 3pm on Sunday night to head home. Now, I usually do not drive on Sundays or evenings because I know how hard it is to find repair places that are open then, but this trip was planned in a hurry and I wanted to cram in too many things. I had a meeting on Monday I was going to be a polling volunteer on Tuesday, etc.

As the light began to dim I found myself getting sleepy, and I actually slid across the road into the other lane more than once. Luckily, there were no cars nearby to hit! I even had an audio book on in the car and I could not pay attention to it because I was so sleepy. Then, something weird began to happen with the car- I noticed that I could no longer read the computer light for the clock, and when I used my turn signal indicator the speedometer went loopy. When I turned off the headlights the car ran better. I knew I was running on my battery, and it would only be a matter of time before I would be stuck in the middle of nowhere in the dark on a Sunday night. Foolishly I passed a settlement with a hotel and gas stations at Harris Ranch, and after I had driven by I figured that maybe I should have stopped...

As things got more desperate, I lost speedometer completely (even with no headlights, in the dark), by the best fortune I found that I was right at a bigger familiar settlement known as Kettleman City with a Best Western motel; I looked in vain for any kind of a car repair place there, but found nothing, and drove into the parking lot of the motel where, once I shut off the motor, the car died. For good.

I checked into the motel- there were no car repair services, of course, at 6:30 on a Sunday night and I would have to wait until the next morning to call AAA. It would cost $1750 to tow the car back to LA, so that was out of the question. Frantic, I just wanted to shoot myself. Or die. I was ready to give up. I was a nice guy, I told myself, why did this have to happen to ME?!?!? My legs hurt, it was hard to walk, even with a cane, I was once again out in the middle of nowhere, by myself, having to take care of myself and Pepita. I finally hobbled to get some dinner at a local sandwich outlet and when I came back by the front desk there was a guy there, an assistant manager named “Chris,” who offered to work on the car- he was sure it was the alternator, and he would be up at 8am and let me know. I felt like an angel had come down and made things easy for me, and I was VERY grateful.

The next day dawned, and I looked for Chris around 8. Nothing. At 9 I went to the front desk to see if they could page him or me. Nothing. The woman at the front desk promised to call me when he replied. Nothing. I debated about whether or not to call AAA, but if Chris was out buying an alternator, I did not want to have to have a tow truck come out for nothing. I took a nap, waiting for the phone to ring, not sure how this day was going to go- the weather outside, after a cold day of rain on Saturday, was COLD and WINDY, and the ground was damp. Horrible weather for sore joints!!!

Finally, at noon, with no word, I decided to call AAA, and Chris called while I was on the phone with them, so I hung up with them. He was trying to find an alternator for my car but there were three it could be, so he had to come to get mine out of my car first. Cutting this long story shorter, eventually Chris looked at the car, figured the problem was bigger than the alternator and told me I would have to call AAA, so I did (later on I realized he could not turn on the car because of the ignition guard I have on the car that I had not told him about, but he would have not been able to find the right kind of alternator, anyway, and he would have delayed me even more. It was an alternator that I needed, in fact, once I got to a repair place).

The tow truck guy came at 1:15 or so, and by 2pm and 25 miles later I was at the place “Chris” had recommended to repair my car. Those guys were great, the car was fixed by 4:40, and I got home at 7:30, safe and sound, about 23 hours later than scheduled.

I learned that the pass between the Central Valley, where I was, and LA, had been closed that night anyway, for snow, and did not open until 10am Monday morning, so I would not have been able to get through, anyway. So- two horrible scenarios (falling asleep at the wheel- because I knew that I would not stop to “sleep it off-“ and having a collision or running my car off the road and possibly overturning it, or being stuck having Pepita and I sleep in my car at the base of the mountains because no rooms would be available so close to the closure) were averted by this car breakdown. So I have mixed feelings about the whole thing. I NEVER would have gotten home on Sunday night after this ill-conceived quick trip, and maybe I had it a little easier than it could have been. So I am grateful to the God Universe for helping me out here.

But thankfully this adventure is OVER and I am finally home, safe and s

Inangahua Junction bridge after the 1968 earthquake

Inangahua Junction bridge after the 1968 earthquake

This was a magnitude 7 earthquake. Many West Coasters remember the quake as the worst experience of their lives.

The Inangahua earthquake struck on a wintry morning in May-- the furious and monumental shaking occurred without any foreshocks to warn that something big was brewing.

Most New Zealanders had not even heard of Inangahua -- a tiny farming, sawmilling and coal mining community 40km east of Westport on the South Island's West Coast.

Inangahua dairy farmers Warren and Ruth Inwood remember hanging on to their bed as it was tossed around the bedroom. Many Coasters have similar memories as they were jarred violently out of their sleep by the 5.24am quake.

'' I thought it was the end of the world,'' Mrs Inwood says.

'' The noise was horrendous. It was like nothing I've ever heard. Our fridge was flipped on its side, a heavy three-seater sofa was thrown across the lounge, ceilings were ripped open, windows exploded out of their frames, cupboards were completely emptied, and broken ornaments and crockery littered the floor.''

The Inwood's property, not far from the earthquake epicentre, took the full force of the shockwaves.

'' It was like an explosion underneath us. The house was shunted up in the air and then it shook violently. A lot of houses were knocked clean off their piles.''

Duke and Ngaio Kingi, also near the epicentre, were thrown from their collapsing bed just as a heavy wardrobe fell across it. Then roof tiles rained down on them. People who ran from their beds cut their feet on broken glass.

Wire fences on the Inwood's farm lay limply on the ground, not because the wire had snapped but because it had been stretched so much.

When daylight came to Inangahua, it revealed a scene like the aftermath of a military bombardment.

It was several hours before the outside world became aware of the plight of the people living in the Inangahua Valley. Road access was cut off in all directions and there was no electricity to send radio messages. The first radio news bulletins reported that tremors had been felt throughout New Zealand. There was initially no mention of the West Coast.

The earthquake left 70 percent of the houses in the township of Inangahua uninhabitable. There were three deaths and 14 injuries. Two deaths occurred in one of the many landslides, and the other occurred when a motorist hit ther abutment to this bridge in the dark. A further three people died when a rescue helicopter crashed.

The main shock had a focal depth of 15km and there were 800 aftershocks of magnitude 3.8 or greater in the following six weeks. Twelve of these had magnitudes of 5 or greater. The main shock was felt from Kaitaia to Invercargill and was recorded by seismometers overseas.

The earthquake damaged or destroyed 50 bridges and twisted railway track so badly that about 100km of track had to be relaid. Property damage occurred as far away as Christchurch and New Plymouth.

Brick chimneys were damaged and destroyed at distances of more than 150km from the epicentre. Some chimneys in Inangahua, Reefton, Greymouth, Westport, Murchison, and Granity crashed through roofs narrowly missing people in their beds.

Brick walls and brick veneers commonly collapsed or were severely cracked. It took several weeks to restore electricity, water supply, and telephone and road links to some areas.

The entire population of the Inangahua area -- about 260 -- were ordered to evacuate. Officials were worried that a large slip that had blocked the Buller River at Dublin Creek might suddenly give way and cause serious flooding downstream in Westport.

About 5pm, 12 hours after the quake struck, the Inwoods were among a group of people who were told by officials to walk out of Inangahua ''towards Reefton''.

'' There were about 50 of us and three torches. We were following the railway line and gingerly crossing slips. You'd negotiate a tricky part and pass the torch back to someone else so they could see where they were going. We could feel the aftershocks and we could hear the rumble of the hill sides slipping -- some people found it pretty scary.''

'While some residents walked out, others were taken by helicopter. They were billeted in Reefton. Police and Civil Defence officials declared Inangahua a no-go area for one month, although farmers were allowed to return briefly to tend to stock.

Mrs Inwood says the people of Reefton were ''unbelievably generous'' in accommodating all the evacuees at short notice. Some families stayed in Reefton for over a month while services in Inangahua were gradually restored.

'' When we were ordered to evacuate, we only had the clothes we were wearing. We were not even allowed to go back to get hand luggage -- some people didn't even have their wallet or cheque book.''

Simon Nathan, a young geologist living in Greymouth at the time of the earthquake, recalls it was about six hours before scientists established where the epicentre was.

'' At first it was thought the earthquake was c

41/365: I never wear hats/Nunca uso gorras

Today I called in sick and by mid-morning I was feeling a bit better so I began to pack up all the stuff in my apartment. Bit by bit, little by little. At the end of the day I donated 2 boxes of junk, mostly empty CD jewel cases, a rug and some books. I also took down all my art and removed the hooks from the walls. Hopefully the landlord won't charge me for repairing the holes when I leave. It's amazing how much clutter can pile up in a year. I hope I am more conscious of this when I move into my new place. Since I live pretty far away from home, it's doubtful that my friends will help me move. I'm going to have to move things home bit by bit, and then to the new place if all works out. I'll be giving up my lovely sofa of 20 years because it's too much of a hassle to move it. The new place is smaller so I'm going to see how smart I can be when it comes to optimizing a small space. They make it look so easy in those design books. Well, goodnight*

Won't mean much unless you saw this counter over the holidays...

Won't mean much unless you saw this counter over the holidays...

...but if you did, your jaw would drop.

It signifies more than just that, though. When Kim had her stroke a few years ago, we sorta-kinda let things go to hell. Things would get stacked up out of the way, not put away where they belonged. We spent a lot of time with each other, which was great after a life-threatening medical event... but we did it at the expense of taking care of our living space.

One of the few good things about 2009 for us was that we spent a big chunk of our savings on repairing things around the outside of the house: some roof work, clearing the bramble forest out of the back yard, and the biggest single item, our new front porch and staircase (replacing one with dry rot and improperly braced steps... nothing quite like watching the stairs bend when you walk up to the door!)

This year, we're not economically set up to do that. So we started, last week, on What 2010 Will Be About for us.

And what is that, you ask? Using what we have in better, smarter, and more enjoyable ways. Putting away things we don't use so that we can have space to enjoy the things we DO use. And clearing away the holiday detritus (sugar canister, boxes of tea, bags of various kinds of flour, chocolate chips, and the like) from in front of the toaster is just what I'm talking about. As is installing various nifty things we've bought over the past couple of years (a new kitchen faucet, for example, and a new bathroom light fixture). We have the stuff, we just haven't ever put it in.

The other lesson: Clearing away this counter took me about two minutes, while water was boiling for a cup of tea. Suddenly the vast organizational disaster area that covers so much of the rest of our house looks manageable.

(I'm saving the red Cuisinart ice-cream maker for when Kim comes home. She says she has a place in mind for it; considering it's 47 degrees outside and it's noon, we won't be wanting homemade ice cream for probably six months at least...)

Next damage. Steve dug up the water pipes. Oops. No biggie, they just go to the outside faucet, but we were without water for a few hours while he repaired them. He did it again the next weekend too in a different place, lol.

English binding, 16th century

The blind-tooled design on this volume, with single stamps in the central rectangle, is one of the earliest English roll-tooled styles and is typical of the period 1500-1540. The rolled-on design (Oldham, J. Basil. English blind-stamped bindings, HE.h(1), with ornament C.(4)), meant that the binder could decorate a cover more quickly than by individual stamping. The volume is bound in calf over wooden boards. Remains of clasps can be seen at the fore-edge with the catchplate for the clasp on the lower cover in the English and French tradition. The spine has been repaired and decorated at a later stage.

Receiver

Receiver

The Francotte improved design rifles lack the cocking indicator lever on the right side (which would be familiar to those who have seen the film "Zulu.")

The stock where it fits into the receiver is heavily damaged and loose. I'm not sure how it attaches and whether tightening some sort of screw (below the butt plate, perhaps) would firm that up. At a minimum I would need to repair the damaged wood so that it fits more snugly into the receiver. My general intention is that I would repair it in some way, perhaps with epoxy or resin, while leaving the visible damage as unmodified as possible.

Apple A9M0106 800k External Floppy Drive Connectors

I use this 800k drive with a Mac 512k that has the original 64k ROMs. Pins 9 (-12v) and 20 (speed) are disconnected for compatibility because my Mac's internal floppy drive is still 400k (see pages 193 and 194 of Larry Pina's Macintosh Repair & Upgrade Secrets book).

This external 800k drive works well except for one odd problem. The red LED on the floppy drive lights up every 2 seconds when no disks are in the drives (at boot time). The Mac seems to scan the drive continually until a disk is inserted (I can hear a small motor noise from the drive every 2 seconds when the LED flashes). This seems odd since that 800k drive is supposed to be supported by the Mac 512k. I am aware of the HD20 init, but that is only required to read/write 800k disks. Once I boot the Mac, I can read/write 400k disks in this 800k drive without any init installed. 800k disks, of course, only work with the HD20 init. I believe this to simply be a minor incompatibility with this drive and the 64k ROMs, as opposed to a unique problem specific to my external drive alone.

The drive mechanism is a red-labeled SONY MFD-51W-03. Voltages at the 800k drive connector measured 4.75v~4.78v, and 11.99v.

Restoration project, Constantine, MI

Restoration project, Constantine, MI

I used to go past this huge old house on Miller's Mill Road in Constantine, Michigan once in a while and always wondered about it. It appeared to be pretty old and has another part on back that makes it like two houses put together.

Yesterday, we were returning from a trip to Kalamazoo and I asked to stop and get some pictures of it. When we pulled off, I saw someone was working on it, tearing off the porch on the right. I got out and asked if I could take some pictures. The young couple seemed kind of suspicious and asked why. I said I thought it was such a neat old place and that I had photographed it before. They said OK and I started to walk around looking at it. Then they came out and apologized profusely for seeming unfriendly. Apparently, the county has told them that the place was being condemned and would be torn down if they didn't do something with it. They said that there had been many people taking pictures, I guess to prove that it was too shabby to stay standing.

Then the girl's father appeared and told me it had been in his family for many generations and they wanted to restore it. The daughter had just gotten married and they wanted to live in it. It was built in the 1850's and is a wonderful place. They then offered to show me inside. I loved it so much because most everything was still original. I think at some point these windows had been replaced and the original ones were the six over six you see on the porch. When I was first talking to the guy he mentioned putting vinyl siding on it but I think that was because that's what he thinks people want to hear. I think with a fresh coat of paint and some cosmetic repairs it will not bother the neighbors anymore. They were also wanting to keep the slate roof, which made me very happy. I sure hope to be able to help in any way I can. The timing for finding them here was perfect and we hit it off right away.

Next picture shows the parlor trim which is fabulous!

From a distance, this pair appeared to be fixing a broken plate glass window at Lord & Taylor. I thought it was strange because they didn't look the part of window repair people. As I got closer I could plainly see they were removing vinyl signage for an Autism Awareness campaign.
